In the interest of disclosure, this restaurant probably deserves 4.5 stars because I've had some pretty mediocre service before. However, I went last night and the service was on point so I bumped it up to five.
I went because someone told me they have the best fish and chips in Tucson. It's funny because I've never actually tried the fish and chips, but I haven't gone wrong yet!
It's a large, single room pub. Very loud, so you won't want to come if you're looking for a romantic outing. As others have mentioned, lots of military memorabilia everywhere. I like it and I'm happy to support the business of a local Tucson veteran as my husband is also a veteran.
I'm impressed at the appeal this place has to a large variety of demographics. I came here one night and felt very out of place because it was loaded with college students (my college days are behind me), but come another night and you'll see mostly folks in their 40s, or groups of older ladies, or groups of veterans, or mid 20s people like me looking for some good food. I like that because it feels very inclusive. Excellent atmosphere to have at a pub and I wonder how they do it - I bet a lot of people would pay the owners for their secrets on how to appeal to everybody like that. I could absolutely see myself becoming a regular here.
Now, onto the food, the most important part! The first time I came here I had the Chesapeake Bay burger because I am an Old Bay freak. Big, stuffed with goodies, and excellent flavor. However, they have lighter dishes that will actually appeal to you rather than forcing you to feel like, "Crap, I'm on a diet, I guess I'll have this nasty wilted salad."
I came here the other night and wanted to try their famous clam chowder. I had a soup and sandwich combo with the chicken salad sandwich. Now, I still think that my grandma's chowder is better, but I won't say that I didn't enjoy that chowder immensely. At request they top it with a generous bit of bacon and green onions. Yum! The sandwich impressed me a lot as well because you don't see chicken salad everywhere, but it's one of my favorites. It comes on toasted bread with the perfect amount of chicken salad. And it's not an overly sweet salad either. You know I liked it because I came back the next night and had the exact same thing.
Ok, so, the service. Last night it was out of the park. Jason noticed me at the door looking for a table and used his immense height to locate one for me in the nearly-full house. He was very pleasant and even checked on me later to see how I was doing. Janelle was my server and she was amazing. I order coffee when I come here rather than a beer because as much as I love beer, I work graveyards and need to wake up before my shift. This usually means that they have to brew a new pot because I don't know who else comes there for coffee at 9pm on a Friday night except me. However, she did so without complaint. She was always prompt and had a smile on her face the whole time. She knew what the soup of the day was without having to go check (other servers at this place sometimes don't...) and I just adored her. Never once felt ignored - and I was a one top taking up a table on a busy night. Thank you, Janelle!
As for other service I've had, it would echo what countless other reviewers have mentioned. Young, pretty college girls who have a little trouble paying attention to their tables. Like I said, they often don't know the specials, and you might have to chase them across the restaurant for the check, where you'll probably find them sitting at the bar, chatting with their friends. I don't get worked up about it because I know what restaurant work is like, it can be a grind, and they will go get my check if asked. It is sort of irksome that I have to go find them, though. It's also a little annoying that this is my usual experience with the service here, rather than Janelle the rockstar.
A note to the restaurant: if half your yelp reviews echo this experience with the service (which they do), maybe work on a little server training. It's ok to socialize, restaurants are social places, but you also need to do your job while on the clock.
Like I said, though, I'm still giving this place five stars because I love it. Come here and you won't be disappointed. read more
