JD Service Now

JD Service Now

We have had their contract service since we moved here in 3.5. The DAY, we moved into our house,…read morethe water main from the street broke. We had no home warranty in place on that first day. Called JD Service now and we thought they were great. A week ago, I plugged in my hairdryer and -- no power. Ok, 30 yr old home, I figured GFC needed replacing -- but same in all plugs including other GFC outlets in other bathroom. Kevin from ServiceNow came out and spent 6 hours over 2 day, much of it in our attic (it's late August) which must've been 120F or hotter. It was a real mystery He finally called to us and showed us the section of Romex he'd found way down and behind the HVAC. 3" of it was totally BURNT with the copper wiring melted due to "electrical arcing." (NOTE: We have never seen any "signs" of rodents in our house or storage attic -- and Kevin noted that, as there were no other chewed spots on the Romex, he feels less inclined to think the damage was due to one chewing on the wire.) Given that it's COPPER wire, which melts at (answer below is from Gemini AI): "AI Overview Copper wiring in Romex cable has a melting point of 1,085°C (1,984°F) So -- THAT will get your attention. Luckily, it was in an open space where the wire was hanging behind the duct work. He also showed us a section of the metal duct which was singed and burnt. Turns out that our original 30+-yr old panel offered no protection against electrical arcing. We had another electrican come out and when we told him what Kevin was going to do (per his written proposal) he said that to trace the wiring to ensure there were no other damaged or burnt spots, replace it and upgrade the panel, he'd have to charge $8000. Maybe he just didn't want to do the job of trying to locate the spot and the problem in that searing attic heat -- I don't know. We decided that we didn't want someone new starting over, when Kevin had already put in all that time and effort to find where the Romex "failed." All I know is Kevin was here againfor 4 hours today -- in addition to the MANY hours he spent trying to figure out what had happened and finding the burnt Romex. He replaced the section of wiring in the attic, upgraded the panel, told us that he'd found that the 4th wire in the panel, and all the GFC circuits (including for the washer/dryer which didn't have one!). Now they're tied, rather than the original "stab" technique which was used when this house was built. He thought he had to replace, turned out not to be connected to anything, so he took a considerable amount off the bill. I just know that, for the amount of time he spent looking for the place where the wiring had failed -- which was in the wall much too near our bedroom wall -- and he WAS looking, showing me how there was electiricty at this point, but none at this point and scratching his head trying to figure out what the hell was going on... The whole job was about $3400. AND we were offered financing that is 12-months of 0% interest -- and no min. payments due during that 1-year period, and no interest or penalty if we pay it off in full within that year. THAT is worth a LOT. Few electiricans are going to be able to offer that. And consider that you're going to pay 19-24% right now on any credit card balance you can't pay off within the first 28 days. We are very pleased at the dogged detective work Kevin did in heat that no human should have to work in. We feel confident that he got to the bottom of it and took us out of danger. We showed that section of Romex to a number of people -- other electricians, our 2 engineer neighbors. All went wide-eyed and said we were DAMN lucky that our house didn't burn down. Is JD more expensive? Possibly -- which is why we got a 2nd bid ( for $8000!) I was unhappy to read the poor reviews above. I can only "speak my truth" which is this: JD Service Now has always showed up quickly for us when called, their staff have been great. we've felt that the people who came knew what they were doing and we believe (HOPE?) that they will stand behind the work they have done for us. Sometimes that is worth paying a premium forand we hope we are right in saying this is one of those times. P.S. I should, perhaps note that neither my husband or I know anything about building, construction or electricity. My engineer neighbor told me it's easy to upgrade the panel myself "can you use a screwdriver?" I asked AI if it was possible to add arc protection to my electrical panel myself -- that my neighbor said it was easy -- and the first thing it said was "DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF!" I asked Kevin and he said "yes, you -- if you'recomfortable doing that kind of work." He confirmed AI's statement that, even with the Master electric switch for your home is turned off, there is still electricity coming in from the street. Touch the wrong part of the box and -- you're fried.

They wasted my time and I could have hired someone legit to take a look at the heating/cooling unit. Should be called JD Service Now OR LATER, with an emphasis on NEVER sending a technician. Highly caution others that this is a scam company.

Felt compelled to write a review for Tobacco Road Heating & Air after the terrific experience we…read morejust had with the company. Like so many people, when summer turned to fall we switched our heat pump from cool to heat only to find it didn't want to heat. To our regret we called another company that had been used by the prior owner of our house. They came out diagnosed what they thought was the problem, replaced the part only to find it didn't work and then started in telling us we were in for steep repair costs bordering on needing to replace the system (the system is from 2013). That's when we asked our neighbors for a recommendation and they told us to call Jonathan at Tobacco Road Heating & Air. We are so, so glad we did. It was the weekend so I sent an email to the company explaining the issue and asking for an appointment. Jonathan wrote back before I could finish my morning coffee and we were set to go with an appointment that week. Our appointment window was 9-12 and Jonathan pulled into our driveway at 8:59am(!). He checked out the issue; gave us a clear explanation of his thinking; and described his plan of attack. He called to check that the warehouse had the parts we needed and was back later that afternoon to install the parts. Problem solved. Not only was Jonathan timely, diligent, and professional but he saved us a ton of money by trying to actually solve the problem and not just sell us a new system. When you move to a new area, finding the right companies to maintain and service your house systems is always a challenge. We are happy that we've found Tobacco Road Heating & Air and can cross HVAC off our list.

He diagnosed the problem as too little coolant, recharged the system, and suddenly my upstairs is cooler than it has been in years. Highly recommend.
