After ongoing horror issues of REI doing their best to either kill me or my new bike with faulty set up and fitting, I finally gave up and decided to come here, even if I had to pay, to see if we could get the issues solved.
Turns out if you want to go to a dentist you should not visit your hairdresser and if you want to get bike service you go to a BIKE shop. Funny how that works, isn't it?
From the get go, they helped. No they did not ask me to pay for the help of my seat wobbling everywhere and fitting my bike properly as REI should have done. They just jumped in and began solving the issues. No wonder this place was packed with bikers and REI had people buying kid's bikes--and me. Oh well, I am no expert.
Sorry to trash REI in a review not for them but I got so frustrated I nearly returned my bike due to problems there, so it is going to spill over.
So anyhow, I had bought an Electra Townie and REI fit me with non-Townie parts they said would work fine. They did not and caused issues, plus they had my seat wrong. Several times after several trips. By the time I got here it was a mystery as to why it was sliding everywhere--found out they had put a bunch of grease in the area where the seat fits--not needed on a new bike...it needed friction rather than grease, and BSS fixed it. I was then able to pick up lots of parts for my bike that REI does not have--I like a hip and fun bike. REI had the basics, and all their helmet boxes were ripped open, stuff missing, no racks that worked for the Townies--really just nothing in stock. So getting here was like Christmas after that.
Mainly because after a week of issues, today is the first day I got to ride my new bike without something going wrong.
This is the place for bikers because all they do is bikes. The guys at REI were friendly the 2nd and 3rd time I went to the Gateway store (not at all at the Lamar store downtown) but they didn't know their stuff. I don't blame that on them--they just weren't trained. On day 3 I had to take out my bike owner's manual to prove to them why they had screwed up the fitting. He said he didn't know he was supposed to do it like that on an Electra bike. HELLO--How is it that the customer is telling the dude who put my bike together--a customer who hasn't ridden a bike in a decade or more--how to do it and surprising him after they did it wrong the first time and I decided to figure out why it was so uncomfortable to ride?? Then when fixed the second time it became unsafe and wobbly.
Okay, I digress. You get a new bike and not be able to ride it for a week due to REI mishaps and see if you aren't bitter as well. I may not have left such a raving review here had I not had the comparison and anger of the feeling of waking up Christmas morning with a new toy and no batteries.
I take that back--I would leave a raving review here anyway. They are stocked to the GILLS with bike toys and people who jump in to help answer questions every step of the way, no matter where you are in the store. Plus the bike dudes helped me fix the issues left for me by another store, and the choices of bikes here are astounding.
For me, I'll do my bike shopping and bike toy shopping here from here on out.
Ride, Sally Ride.
