I just stopped this afternoon to have some adjustments done after I'd done a frame-up rebuild of my bike. Carl quickly worked out the kinks in the shifting that I hadn't been able to correct, and gave me some advice on other improvements that could be made. The work was done quickly and Carl and the other person there were really personable. There was no upselling, just advice on what could be done next. The price charged was very reasonable. I've been here several times before and have nothing but good things to say about this great neighborhood shop. read more

I've been coming here since the shop was on 6th street. I was always happy with the service and support until recently. Granted, I'm not in there all the time, because I know how to tune up a bike myself, but when maintenance is overdue or beyond my skill set, I'd bring my bike here. Several months back, I brought my bike for a new chain and a tune-up, since it needed it. I was bummed they wouldn't even attempt to estimate when I might get my bike back. I was bummed about the tech's brusque attitude. But the crappiest of all was paying over $100 for the service, and the owner failing to say "thank you." Incidentally, a couple months after this tune up, the new chain started squeaking and squealing like never before. I store my bike indoors and hadn't done excessive riding, so I took it elsewhere after some tri flo failed to fix the problem at home. Turned out, the chain had, in the opinion of the other shop, no lubricant. I've never had this happen with a new chain install before. read more

The next day they sent me a quote for $345, which includes $20 for a "bike wash" and $90 for a tuneup in addition to apparently $235 for other ways to say a tune up. More than a rip off its unprofessional and insulting. Unfortunatelty I cant recommend this place and I won't be taking my bikes here. read more

These guys are great! The first time I went in I met Brian, he cut to the chase and told me the bike I had recently purchased was abused and not worth the tune up or fixing. I knew it was a box bike but I didn't know how bad it was until I took it in. Anyhow on his recommendation I returned to the craigslist seller (miraculously) and purchased something else. Brian also offered to be the "inspection intermediately" between me and any bike I was considering buying. He said, "most sellers shouldn't have a problem meeting you here to have it looked over if it's a good bike." Then today (12/03/2010) I walked in to have a new tube put on my Trek road bike and got to meet James. He pointed out things that might need attention later, but didn't push me to do it the same day. I love going into East Side Peddle Pushers because of the authenticity I get from the staff. I value the integrity and support they give me when working on my bike. I always trust that they charge me fair and are gonna keep me safe on the road. I was in the shop yesterday and another customer brought in an old vintage bike that wasn't functioning at all, Scott told her had to decline working on the bike because it was not a well made bike and it wasn't worth trying to make it one. When she left he asked me how his communication was and we had a little dialogue on how to communicate even better. I heard that he really values being honest with the customers and not investing in things that aren't worth their money. I was so refreshed with the honesty and integrity. I needed a minor repair and these guys made it quick (like super quick!) and painless. They were super friendly, didn't talk down to me because I didn't understand what was wrong, and most importantly to me, had excellent communication while working on it. I ambushed them while they were trying to open at 10 am. By noon, they were texting me with info and questions. Not long after, they texted saying it was ready. I'm looking forward to when we can freely shop inside small stores like this again. I am happy to write this revue , although I don't have the words to express how impressive this little, big Bicycle shop is . my first trip there I met Lee , he took the time for me to tell him of the changes in my life because of my age .I wanted to continue riding my bicycle for many more years but I am taking a leave for awhile .I'm 80 in Dec. We talked about our love for the Bicycle and he mentioned his Mom , she rode a Bicycle. My next trip I met Ben , what a delightful , kind attentive person . He mentioned his Mom and we found that he and I share the same birthday . And he has the same name as four men in my family ,Benjamin . I sold my bicycle and Ben gave me more than I asked for it . I would recommend this shop as one of the best . And there were friendly customers , and a table where 2 young ladies were helping us with getting out the vote . I may have to visit there just because of the nice people that made my trip a delight . I wanted to say This shop was recommended by a woman that I met while on a bicycle ride . Stopped by to have them check out my front tire pressure and back break....$6 later and I was out the door with a bike that rode like it was brand new again!! I've been to East Side Pedal Pushers twice - once for a tube repair and new tires and once because I realised I was riding around with my front wheel unsecured and went in to my local bike shop only to be told I was missing a quick release skewer which is kind of dangerous. I guess you can tell from that sentence I don't know much about bikes! Had an excellent experience both times I went in and came away with my bike in MUCH better shape and with a bit more knowledge. Prices are super reasonable. On the occasion I got the new quick release skewer, I also bought a rad little bike basket from a nice selection they had instore. The guys oiled my chain and messed around with a few things and I can honestly say when I rode my bike home I was pretty much singing with joy about how much better it felt and because my new basket meant I wasn't going to be riding dangerously with my bags on my handlebars anymore. That was about six months ago and I've been meaning to write this review all this time because I felt so happy and appreciative when I rode away that day. Thank you so much, guys. Great service! Lee took the time to teach me how to change my tubes and did not charge any extra for teaching me/fixing little kinks in my bike! So patient and thorough. My dad dropped me off because he had brought my bike down for commute during the school year. Both tubes had been busted all summer and I really missed riding my Bianchi. Upfront Lee seemed a bit taken aback by my request to be taught how to change the tubes but humored me, letting me do the back tire 90% on my own (tight tire and weak thumbs haha) after thoroughly teaching me using the front wheel. Will be back for future upgrades! read more

Tl;dr: Could not be bothered to serve us. I had biked down here with my partner on a Saturday morning to fill up my tire, buy a pump converter to replace the one I'd lost, and look at some extras -- tool sets and bells and stuff. First time at this shop. When we walked in, the only employee was ringing someone up for some service and the two were chatting. The space in front of the counter is very cramped and full of bikes, so we were feet in front of him. The employee didn't even say hello, look at us or acknowledge we were there at all, as the two carried on their personal conversation and placed their bodies and the serviced bike in such a way that we couldn't even look at the merchandise. They carried on their personal conversation for a good 10 minutes (not exaggerating) with us waiting politely right in front of them. Also note that there's no air conditioning. We were so frustrated that we were about to walk out, when they FINALLY wrapped it up. The employee did NOT apologize, and he did eventually help us but he was not very nice about it; it was like he just wanted to get us out of there. ***I promise we don't smell like rotting garbage or anything--we're just totally normal people, I swear.*** We definitely won't go here again and honestly I regret giving them my $12 -- there are much better local bike shops in town who are much kinder to their customers. This was the worst consumer experience of my life. I took a brand new bike into them asking to build a custom rim for me. The accepted the task and called me 2 weeks later saying it was 'ready' I picked the bike up and realized I could not brake at all without making the loudest screeching sound I have ever heard. I take it immediately back in and ask for assistance. They tell me they knew this would happen and sux to be me. I agree to pay an additional fee to rectify the situation (sand the rim down to remove all paint). After another week of labor I pick up my bike only to find it worse than it was before. I finally give up and ask to just replace my original wheel and agree to eat all the fees I have paid up to this point (nearly $200) to just get back to what I gave them to start with. I was told that would be an additional fee and they wouldn't guarantee it would ever work the same again. Great group of guys working over there... I wouldn't let them touch anything you care about. read more

Your basic, old school, no bullshit bike shop. I got a flat in 2006 one block after passing Lee's first location on 6th at Waller (or so...), and he was the sole employee. He'd just opened the week before and was daring enough to start a small biz on the "dangerous" side of 35 long before the hipster invasion. At first he seemed a little, uh, taciturn, but within a few minutes I realized that's just who he is: a quiet guy dressed like an 1890's shaving powder ad who truly loves bicycles and the culture around them. Since then he's moved to bigger digs and gained a few employees, but he's still the same bike-lovin, no bs guy. His colleagues are efficient and nice folks to boot, and share his bike-love. I decided in April to not turn on the car AC once this year (which I did in '98-2000 and then got lazy), and have stuck to that by mainly riding my bike around town this summer. Sounds crazy, but once you get used to it, even in this heat, you don't want to get in the car any more. This decision has led to various visits to ESPP over the last four months, and each one was a treat. Flat tire? New tube installed and out the door for nine bucks in less than four minutes. Seriously. Could have sold me a thicker tube but were honest and admitted the cheap one was for my purposes just as good. How often do you not get an upsell these daze? Profit is not the main principle here. That they've stayed open five years in a town full of bike shops says it all. You can even just roll in, pump up your tires and roll out without a word and they won't bat an eyelash. They want to help people keep biking above all, and that's keeping people out of cars, keeping the air cleaner, keeping the traffic very light (I kid!), and keeping life better for all Austinites. So, many thanks to Lee and company for running a truly fine, no frills bike shop for people who love to live on two wheels. From those about to bike: we salute you. read more

Great people at this place. I've been in here when i've had breakdowns or emergencies near there, and they usually patch me up quickly and a couple times if it's something tiny, when I go to pay they just tell me don't worry about it. The main reason for yelping about them is that my bike was stolen recently, it was brought in to ESPP and sold to them. They were decent enough to put up a craigslist about a "possible stolen bike" and i was able to recover it. My bike was back in my hands the same day it was stolen. The dudes at the shop wouldn't even take a reward/gratuity from me. Major crusaders in "bike recovery" at this place. This has been "my shop" for a couple years now. It's where i recommend people. I took my very well used bike into the shop for a tune-up. I received a satisfactory quote on the tune-up and replacement parts that I needed. They called me with a progress report. When I went to pay my $162 repair bill and retrieve my bike the attendant told me that I needed air in my tires and pointed me to an air pump to use myself. He then asked his co-worker if I could use my AMEX card. The co-worker said, "I don't like to take AMEX but if I have to I will." The experience was fine and I feel the price was fair. I am still confused about the very end of my transaction. They could have been a bit nicer. No, I will not go here again. read more

Yelp brought me here. Thanks Yelp! I hadn't owned a bicycle since my shiny red Trek was stolen when I was living in Waco several years ago, which was pretty scarring. After a few years in Austin, I decided it was time to jump on the bandwagon. There had been so many times when I just wanted to hop on my bike and go downtown and not worry about parking. But I really didn't know what I was looking for, and I'm not a bike aficionado, so I was a little overwhelmed. So, I checked out Yelp and read all the positive reviews for East Side Pedal Pushers. I also talked to one of my coworkers who had good things to say about them. As I said, I know next to nothing about bikes, and I am a pretty awkward person in general. I walked in and it was obvious that this was a serious bike shop, so I felt a little intimidated. Pretty soon, though, the guys were talking to us about why we wanted bikes and what we would be using them for, so I felt less stupid. They were really helpful, and they let us test drive the bikes up and down the street. We fell in love with a pair of 1970s Schwinns that they had fixed up. $150 each, which I thought was a total steal. They helped us pick out lights and locks, and even loaded them into the car for us. In the not-too-distant past, I took the plunge and bought a the second bike I've had since living here, a beautiful Schwinn Suburban from the seventies. Unfortunately, when I bought it I knew what I was getting into. Both tires were flat and rotten. Although I do like a good project, I decided to let the pros handle it the first time around. A friend introduced me to East Side Pedal Pushers, a cute little bike shop tucked out of the way on the corner of 5th and Onion. As soon as we walked in, a girl greeted us and asked how she could help us. I explained that all I needed was just tires and tubes. She gave me two quotes, one for the better tires and one for the cheaper tires, explaining the difference in quality. There was no pressure to get the better tires, but she made a good case. I ended up opting for the better tires. Three days later, my bike was ready. We returned and this time I looked at locks. The girl who fixed my bike advised against the cheap aluminum lock I was looking at, saying it would be easy to cut it. Since there weren't a lot of locks there, I ended up not finding one that time around. When paying, she mentioned that she also adjusted the brakes for me and didn't charge for it. Overall, I'm impressed by this shop. My bike rides perfectly. The workers are friendly and attentive, and they don't try to sell you parts or services you don't need and even throw in some free adjustments. I've heard and read many good things about this place and know the owners sister though never been in because I didn't need a bike till now.....wow, was very disappointed with how i was treated...specifically from some dude named Trey/Troy? Don't know this guy, never met him in my life.. I was ready to drop a grand on a bike and i mean that day.....I walked in smiled said "hey, whats up dude how's it going..i'm looking to buy a used or new bike, i commute about 38 miles a day" and while I was speaking the guy really didn't really acknowledge me or look at me but noticed the girls walking in, cut me off and then said "I don't have anything for you" then brushed me off and started chatting with these girls... So maybe he was unimpressed with how i looked (not east side enough)???..I'm original Austin, born on the east side; maybe he thought i had no $ and was wasting his time?? He never asked me one question.. If this was my biz I would be pissed, 1) about how this shop is being represented, and there are many bike shops in town though i came here first.. 2) loosing a potential sale of a new or used bike. 3) loosing a potential $1K sale. This guy was just plain rude, and there were several bikes in the store my size... he's not doing ESPP any favors...Trey needs some treyning wheels..for real. read more

I've known Lee a long time and had the pleasure of meeting the awesome people he carefully chooses to work at his shop. You can be certain your bike, even if it's on the older side, will receive the best care here. The miracles I've seen them work on unique, older bikes that people really love are inspiring. Most any shop will do a great job on a high dollar machine, but the guys at Pedal Pushers are wizards of the highest order who can source very hard to find parts. More than likely it's on hand in the back. About a month back I got several parts for an old 9 speed I was putting a triple chainring back on. They had a triple Shimano Sora crankset they gave me an unspeakably good deal on in used condition. They helped me find that rare part, even though I wanted to do the work myself. I kept the pedals and other items but returned the crankset because I was convinced it was wasn't quite the right spacing between chainrings. I didn't know it yet, but I was wrong. The bike had a triple shifter but the derailleur was a double. Had I let them do the install they would have found this tiny detail, but I was bent on learning the skills myself. Lee, knowing he'd given me the right part, gave me a refund anyway. I was totally wrong and they were very kind about it. In the end I learned a lot about how bikes work and the East Side Pedal Pushers were a huge help throughout the journey. They're just like super cool man. Go walk around and look at the cool bikes. I was riding around today when I noticed that the bolts on my rack had come loose and I needed to get a couple of new ones. My friend saw East Side Pedal Pushers as we were riding by and so we stopped and I took my bike in. Brian replaced the bolts and then gave my bike a little tune up. It was obvious that he's knowledgeable about bikes and that he cares; I didn't even have to ask him to do anything, he just noticed that there were some issues and he started talking to me about them. Honestly, I don't know much about bikes, so I sometimes feel embarrassed. But Brian was really helpful and nice. He explained a couple things to me and made me feel like my bike was in good hands. I visited East-Side Pedal Pushers looking for parts for my PoS bike which had broken. Good reviews on Yelp took me to them. As others have described, the facilities are spartan and non-air-conditioned and loaded with good vibes. Great prices on all the categories of do-dads that you might need. In particular, employee James was very patient with my questions and helped me pick out the things that I needed and a couple that I simply wanted. I felt very comfortable there. But if you have something more vintage or beat-up, then you ought to consider taking it to Lee Gresham, who was involved with the Yellow Bike Project in Austin when it first began. This shop is just neat. It feels like you're stepping into an old European shop, and Lee is kind of quiet and shy in an endearing kind of way. Maybe what you would expect out of a small European village shop owner, somewhere in the cobble-stoned streets of France or Italy. I took my 1970s Raleigh cruiser, and he fixed it up for $90. I met Lee through the East side cycling community, and for these people, a bicycle is not just a job or a hobby - it's a way of life. read more

This is a small shop with a somewhat limited selection of bikes and parts, but what they lack in size and stock, they more than make up for in customer service. I live nearby, so this is the shop I always go to when I have some random unexpected mechanical failure. More often than not, they're able to get me fixed up immediately and for just a few dollars. Every now and then they'll need to order a part first - which can take a week or so - but they're still always happy to do it for me. Every bike shop in Austin has knowledgeable staff - especially their mechanics. But most shops aren't very eager to dispense that knowledge for free. Their main goal is to sell you parts or charge you for maintenance. And I get that. Businesses need to make money. But the mechanics at East Side Pedal Pushers have found the perfect balance between making money and being helpful. They're happy to do minor quick-fixes for free, and they charge very reasonable prices for other work. But most of all, they're friendly. Seriously, these are the friendliest bunch of bike mechanics I've ever met. They'll joke around with you, give you tips and advice, and even teach you how to do some basic maintenance on your own to save you money. I've never felt the need to tip a bike mechanic before, but I *always* tip these guys. read more
