I'd heard a lot about Treebeards but never actually been here. I was glad to finally give it a try. $15 for the chicken fried chicken with two sides is a good price for a fair amount of food. Of course, unless you work in the area you'd have to deal with parking and trying to find the place in the tunnels, which kind of makes the whole thing not worth going to. I was meeting up with a friend and had to be in downtown anyway. It's cafeteria style so you walk up and pick what you want, pay at a register, and then find your own table. The chicken fried chicken was really good especially the gravy. In fact the gravy may just make this whole thing. The mac and cheese was very average, potentially even a little underrated as it wasn't even hot. The red beans and rice was solid, but I would have liked a little bit more flavor. Overall this place borders between the three and a four, but given that the mac and cheese was literally room temperature it's hard for me to give this place a four. Delicious homecookin Oasis in downtown Houston. I was so happy to find this place after years of eating bad fastfood downtown. Its southern style but lots of veggies if you want to be healthy. Some creole touches like gumbo. Everything I ate was so tasty from the dirty rice, spinach salad, black eyed peas, grilled chicken. Unlike most Houston takeout underground downtoqn, there's A lot of seating and you dont have to eat off plastic utensils and cups! Service was friendly also. Tree beards happened to be there when I went for a walk in the Houston Underground tunnel system. I was not really looking to eat Southern comfort food but I overheard the enthusiasm from one of the groups going in to eat so I went for it. The only memorable thing from my plate was the squash casserole. I had the Jambalaya and it was decent. The casserole however was the first time I had tried this particular dish and I am sold on it from now on! I have a recipe that I looked up to make this squash casserole for my family for the holidays. The casserole alone bumped it up a star in my book! This place is a pretty tame version of creole food. Nothing too spicy, nothing too daring. It gets the job done for lunch and at a price that rivals far lesser food and with very generous portoins, it is a good place with a spacious dining room to hit up if you work in the area. You can talk all the smack you want about your coworkers in the privacy of your secluded corner! I can't imagine coming here casually if you're not already in the area. It is hard to find and parking in the area is tough but it is worth the visit if you are already here. read more

We still come here for lunch occasionally. We love the jumbalaya and shrimp etouffee, but feel like both dishes are overtaken by onions. Easy on the onions! It seems like I'm overpaying when it's 75% onions. But the shrimp etouffee in particular is so good, I splurge sometimes. I would come here a lot more often if they took out half or more of the onions - and maybe added rice instead? I'm not even asking for more shrimp, here. Treebeards' Red Beans and Rice is one of my favorite dishes. When you order it, specify "all the way" to get cheese and onions on top. A little hot sauce sprinkled on top takes it to perfection. I like to order a rookie plate...half of the plate is always red beans and rice, the other half another Cajun dish. The Jambalaya with shrimp and sausage is delicious. I also recommend the seafood gumbo and shrimp étouffée. For dessert, you will be in heaven with the butter cake. This location always has a line going in, but the lines moves quickly. Decide what you want while you are in line...the menu is on a giant chalkboard. I believe the jambalaya and gumbo dishes alternate between seafood or chicken every day. The line will guide you past the drinks. Grab one, make the corner, and don't forget to grab silverware. Once you get past the salads, the servers are waiting to spoon-up your order. Grab a slice of French bread and maybe a piece of butter cake in the cash register line, and you are set. You may have to wait a minute or two during the lunch hour rush, but the tables are cleaned quickly. Great regional food at reasonable prices. You can't go wrong with Treebeards. read more

Everyone tends to love this place, and I guess I just don't get it. I mean, don't get me wrong. It's good. I've never been UNhappy with what I've gotten. But I just don't see the hype. The waits are too long, the prices are just meh for tunnel food, and I guess nothing on the menu excited me enough to ever actually suggest going there. Having said that, if someone else suggests it, or if we are having it catered in the office, I will, of course, partake in the festivities. And I'll enjoy it. Houston, we have a problem... I'm sorry, I just can't help myself. So I asked my concierge at the Magnolia Hotel (review to come later) where I could grab a quick bite to eat nearby. She suggested McDonald's or Starbucks. Seriously, she needs a new job...stat. Thank goodness for the helpful Treebeards employee who got me all set up with a tray, silverware, and some good eats. They suggested I go for a combo of the shrimp etouffee and red rice/beans. Ok, I was game..and even grabbed myself a slice of bread at the cash register. OMG, I've got to expand this review at some point, but the best part of my multi-week training enslavement in Allen Center several years ago was lunch at Treebeards. Once I discovered this little gem, I was set for the duration. I (heart) their redbeans and rice. Just writing this review is making me twitch from withdrawal. I found all their veggies to be terrific and they were probably the healthiest lunches I've had then or since, with the notable exception of the Italian Cream Cake and the Carrot Cake. And I must confess that I once bought an entire Italian Cream Cake to be shared with the family when I got home. Apparently going to the closer, presumably quicker (no it is NOT) location means you can't get certain items. And some items you can get just taste worse than you remember them tasting in Market Square. Workers all happy and smiley face in Market Square, a little less so at the Cloister, but they are downright Liz Lemon trademarked frowny-faces here. What gives? Does working a food service job in the tunnels really turn the Snow Elves into the Falmer? Apparently so. This is like the red headed stepchild of the franchise. I don't get how it could be so sorely neglected when the others are flourishing with tasty food and decent workers - so that is why I am applying the Dwemer enslavement of the Snow Elves theory. The vile twisted Falmer are not so good with preparing the creole food apparently, and they are even worse at customer service. This Treebeard's is located basement level, in a corner off on its own, at 1100 Lousiana. If you're coming from Smith St., it's the building across from Massa's, next door to the Hyatt Regency. Take the escalator down to the basement level; it's behind the escalators. If you want take-out, go down the hall that looks like it's meant for security or employees only. There's a little sign above the door advising Treebeard's To Go, but it's hardly visible. If you prefer to eat there, dining space is available, though it appears deceptively claustrophobic. I prefer the Market Square Treebeards, but this one will do since it is within a walkable distance. Service here is fast, efficient, and friendly. Their daily specials are similar but different from the Market Square Treebeards, and probably the Cloisters Treebeards, so check the menu of the specific location to verify their daily specials. I tried the Fried Catfish plate special, available on Thursdays. It was superb. Clean, flaky catfish with a non-greasy, flavorful cornmeal crust. You get a choice of two sides with your daily special. I chose mac n' cheese and a spinach salad that day. Today, I opted for a large order of shrimp etouffee with a side of jalepeno cornbread. This shrimp etouffee did not wow! me like the one at Market Square location. The roux was actually rather oily, not memorably flavorful, with too many onions and green peppers. The plate looked like it had potential, but the taste did not live up to its appearance. The jalepeno cornbread was like cake, cornbread cake with bits of jalepeno, white onion and corn kernels baked in. Slather it with some butter and you've got yourself a deal. I succumbed again to my butter/blondie bar addiction, but I will need to return to try the red velvet, chocolate, and yellow cake with chocolate icing. Perhaps not all in one swoop, unless I declare it a three cake slice lunch, which may have more productive results than a three martini lunch. read more

On my visit to Houston, it was recommended to check out "the tunnel." I was really amazed by the world beneath the street level. It was surreil thinking that a "world" was living, breathing and eating below the cars. We stopped by Treebeards, because again, it was recommended. We got some type of gumbo dish which was pretty spicy. What I LOVED was the corn bread. It was darn good! Oh Treebeards, I never understood why most of my coworkers raved so highly about you! Now I know why! Everytime I go out with a coworker, the first suggestion is treebeards. Quite frankly, Ive never actually really been a fan, moreless cajun food!! I've always ordered the chicken salad (a bit on the pricey side) and the jalapeno cornbread. I dont know why I continue to order this cornbread, it's not even that great! Too dry and where's the stinkin jalapenos?! On the xth visit, I decided to try the chicken and sausage gumbo and again regrettably, a side of jalapeno cornbread (maybe I think that it'll get better each time, but unfortunately it just doesn't!). Although the small size of the gumbo is a wee bit too small, the gumbo was actually pretty good!! I was satisfied and am glad I didn't order the typical chicken fruit salad I always do. Im glad I gave treebeards another try...next time I wont be as resistant when a coworker suggests to go again. :D ALWAYS come early, before 11:30AM or you'll get stuck in the long line. This place only opens for a little while since it's a downtown restaurant where people can go on their lunch break. I do like to come down here if I have some time in the downtown area. This is a Luby's style restaurant, but the food is more Cajun than cafeteria food. I had the chicken with red beans and rice, as well as that hot sauce that you can put on the rice at the table. By the way, iced tea here is the best, so I would say to get some. When you get your food, you pay the man and sit down to enjoy some food. The chicken is cooked well, but there are a few other entree sides to choose. Sometimes, options are limited, but I always get their good fried chicken. The red beans and rice have a good flavor, but I would suggest putting some tobacco on it because it usually has more taste with it. More sides are available, so I will have to come back one day and see what I can add to my dish. This place is good for people who work downtown or who are out and about finding food. I would say come try some good food from this cafeteria like restaurant. I need to come to try downtown restaurants more often. read more

**Don't be fooled: The Treebeards hot sauce is nothing more than relabeled Cajun Chef!** I live and die by spicy food so hot sauce is a serious subject. As one of the thousands of "tunnel people" who are forced to wander beneath the surface of Houston during the dreadful summers, I frequent underground (and not the cool underground like hidden clubs, but laterally below the ground) eateries. One morning as I was walking towards the ray of light that is the Starbucks underneath the Pennzoil building, I stumbled across the morning shift at Treebeards with a giant crate of Cajun Chef Hot Sauce. They literally take the label off and replace it with their own at a markup. I'm sure they have some sort of licensing agreement...yeah sure, but I just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention. As for the food, it's pretty decent across the board. I am no Cajun pro, but I have been told from my friends that hail from the dirty south that it is not authentic. It is standard fare that you can find at any of the other Treebeards but food tastes sweeter when there isn't sweat dripping down your face. The location in the tunnel is great for those humid summer days. A lot of people get the red beans and rice. Personally, I think the serving size is too big, but stay tuned; I will teach you a trick at the end on how to get the right sized portions and something extra for yourself! A MUST have is the squash casserole that they only serve on Fridays. There are days I will go somewhere else for lunch but pick up a side of the casserole on its own. Get down early or else you will be forced to wait in line. Anything after 11:45 will extend your wait to over 10 minutes. Is it worth the wait? I guess it all depends on who's standing next to you in line. As for price, you can get out with a meal, some contraband hot sauce and an iced tea for under 6-10 bucks depending on what you get. The portions here are huge and you can definitely split some for later. My major complaint about the food is the amount of salt they insist on layering into everything (except the squash casserole, of course). If you actually polish off the entire serving, you'll need that iced tea and more as your mouth will be as parched as if you were wandering around above ground in the "dry-heat" of Dallas. As for the secret: if you want red beans and rice and don't want to become victim to the "magical fruit," just order the veggie plate (which is 3 sides of vegetables) with 2 sides or RB&R and then 1 side of squash casserole (or some other dish). That way, you don't have an overwhelming amount of RB&R and you get an additional side. This actually comes out to only ~$0.50 more expensive than the RB&R on it's own. So get there early, grab yourself some grub and let the good times roll! read more

I am OFFICIALLY DONE with this locations gumbo! The people in my office think Treebeards hung the moon but I've always said it's not my idea of good Louisiana cooking. Today I wanted something warm and opted for the seafood gumbo. I've had the gumbo before but I give a place a couple of tries before writing them off. This location is off. The gumbo is crunchy. Like, the celery, onions, peppers, all hard and crunchy but it's the roux that disappoints. It's too thick, greasy & bitter. The grease is floating on the top of my gumbo and I swear the roux was scorched. I can say that I enjoyed their meatloaf and I will try the jerk chicken but no more crunchy gumbo, hard red beans & rice and slimy etouffee . Granted they are usually closed by the time I get off from work, however on those rare weekday off days, I make sure I make my way to the tunnel. The food is fantastic. Solid restaurant in The Tunnel. We went on a Wednesday around 11:45 for lunch, and the line was pretty long but it went by quickly. The ordering is a bit hectic - it's cafeteria style, and you tell the people what you want and they put it in plates/bowls for you (unless you get a salad - those are sitting out pre-packaged). I got a cup of the chicken/sausage gumbo and a cup of the shrimp jambalaya. They were both pretty good - I preferred the gumbo - but nothing too spectacular. I was confused by the name - Treebeards makes it sound like a healthy vegan place, but it's a southern cooking place? However, there's free bread/butter for the table, and (and this is a big and) their desserts are AMAZING. I tried my friend's yellow cake (I think) that had some chocolate in it. It was a huge slice, first of all, for I think $4, and it was probably one of the best pieces of cake I've ever had. Moist yet fluffy and dense but not too heavy. Yum. And although I did try a few different items, ultimately, my favorite was always the red beans and rice with sausage, topped with green onions and cheese!! While I often grew tired of the other options in the tunnel, I always returned to Treebeards! There was always a line but it always moved fairly quickly. Oh Treebeards, I've heard such great things about you, but I've only been let down. Maybe I should stop trying weird items. The first time I ate here, I ordered the chicken and sausage jambalaya. BAD IDEA. What is this soupy mess of a dish? You can't just throw some meat, celery, and watery tomatoes together and call it jambalaya. I would rate this dish a one. It was just that bad. I decided to give this place another try the other day and ordered the special for the day, chicken fried chicken. It was okay. The meat was a little dry, and it could have used more gravy. The jalapeno cornbread was nothing special, also a little dry. However, the red beans and rice were delicious. Better than Popeyes I dare say. Get it with cheese and onions on top for something different. I'll have to check out the gumbo and etouffee another time. Pro tip (if someone else already does this, they will hate me for revealing this to you): Order your food at the to-go line to skip the wait and just grab a table right outside the restaurant if you're in a rush. I don't find their prices to be out of line with other options in the tunnel. Skip the fast food and come to this place instead. Everything that comes out of their kitchen is hot and fresh. The atmosphere is quite lovely. Be advised that it can get quite busy at lunch time. There's a reason for that. My suggestion would be to get there a few minutes before the lunch rush. I've only had one entree dish at Treebeards and have yet to be tempted away from my new love. Their red beans and rice with andouille sausage have a perfect marriage of fatty sausage and spicy slow-cooked red beans. They even offer to top it off with cheese. I first thought to myself, cheese? Seriously? Now that I've had it, I can never go without. After all, everything is better with a little bit of cheese, right? Oh, Treebeards, you've ruined me for life for other Red Beans & Rice. If you're feeling adventurous, try one of the huge slices of cake at the register. Their chocolate cake and the yellow cake with chocolate frosting are delish. Get extra forks to share with your friends b/c the slice is huge. Just make sure someone grabs some milk. Treebeards is definitely one of my go to places when I'm searching for comfort food downtown! When i think about cafeteria food, I can't help but think about about public school. slow lines so long people just shift their weight staring into space in disbelief they're in school waddling an inch forward without bending their knees plastic trays with pits with weird circular dents week old milk and just add water food with some kind of green thing now inverse that and you have treebeards. the food quality is consistently good choices are limited with the daily scheduled special the line is out the door almost to the end of the escalator on most days but it moves fast still can't wait? get treebeards to go and just eat at the tables under the escalator you'll notice there is alot of people watching going on there Try to go early. seating seems to fill up relatively fast come 20 mins after 12 but I've never had a problem. I recently had the chicken friend chicken with mash potatoes and gravy the fried part was crispy and the chicken was moist the mash tasted real as it had pieces of skin in it gravy was good but i'm not too much a drown my stuff in gravy kind of guy. Favorites here seem to be the meatloaf,catfish, italian creme cake, carrot cake and that salad thing with cranberries and pears. Great place to meet for lunch on this side of downtown. one of the fastest places to pick up a good quick lunch. Though I don't live in Houston, I did grow up there. And there is one thing I miss that is impossible to get in California - damn good catfish. I was lucky to visit Treebeards on catfish day and I had the catfish of course. And oh what a perfect slab of fish it was. I miss that clean catfish taste. And they bread it just right. I finally decided to try this place out after passing it dozens of times on my lunch breaks, and went with one of their specials, the baked catfish with etoufee. Not the best etoufee I've ever had but definitely not the worst. Portion seemed a little small, but felt appropriate for lunch. For the sides I got the mashed potatoes and jalapeno cornbread. The cornbread was very dry, but it was hot and fresh when I got it. If it weren't for the gift card, I'm not sure I'd eat here again with my own money, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better cajun place in the tunnels unless it was another Treebeards.
