This place served me the best food I've had in this city. I would describe their cooking style as putting it all together so well that you never want to eat any of it separately again. I am still having mixed feelings about this place. I have heard so many wonderful things about this place from several people whose opinions I value. My actual experience here was not what I was expecting in the least. The two highest points of the meal was the cozy, well decorated, comfortable dining room and the coffee. This place serves up some great coffee. Our server was friendly and helpful but as our visit went on he kind of disappeared. He really did not come back much at all to check on us. I started out with the French Onion soup which was very good indeed. I them proceeded to order the Oslo Omelet. This contained smoked salmon, dill, and cream cheese. I was very disappointed in this selection. It did have just the right amount of salmon as to not overpower me but I was beginning to think that they forgot the dill as i didn't catch a hint of dill until I got 1/2 way through the meal. Another terrific dinner at Tre Kronor. Started with gravlax: tender strips of cured raw salmon rolled up on a plate with chopped onion, tomato, brown mustard and buttered toast points. Delicious. The soup of the day was exceptional: a deep brown flavorsome beef broth, with lots of floating still-crunchy veggies: yellow onion, sliced green onions, cabbage, carrots and celery. But the best part was the small pieces of smoked bacon mixed in with the vegetables for a smoky meaty bite. The soup seemed to be a cross of French onion soup and a Chinese vegetable soup. The result was wonderful, and seemed very European. My entree was a rib eye steak topped with a light bleu cheese beurre blanc. On the side, beautifully mashed potatoes and several steamed asparagus stalks, sprinkled with butter and Parmesan cheese shavings. A bread basket with several interesting and tasty breads, along with two types of knäckebröd (rye crispbread crackers) added interest to the meal. To drink, I had a pleasantly tart bottle of Fentiman's "Victorian lemonade" (Fentiman's is a high end British-based brewer of interesting "botanical sodas", using ginger, burdock, dandelion and other plants as flavoring). For dessert, several thin slices of an almond-flavored pound cake, topped with tart lemon curd, a couple of blueberries, a sprig of mint and a sliced strawberry. It was perfection. A couple of cups of good black coffee (Swedes know coffee!) topped it off. The three women I interacted with: the hostess, my server (Kristin G) and the busser-- were all friendly and enthusiastic, which made my meal there even more pleasant. Yum... When I went to NPU across the street and when I lived two blocks away from Tre Kroner, I ate here almost every week. I love the brunch and lunch here. The dinner is also good, but I usually go for brunch or lunch. Everything is good, especially the deserts. The prices are reasonable. Most of the servers are Swedish too. It gets VERY VERY busy after church lets out on Sundays, so try to go early. I have never had a bad meal here and I have always had awesome service. read more

Dinner, Monday night, I was eating at my new favorite restaurant Tre Kronor. I know that Tre Kronor is known as a breakfast place, and from the pictures their breakfast looks amazing, but my cravings for T. K. will always be for their dinner. To start I will talk about my one, and only complaint about T.K., their appetizer selection. If you hate seafood there are no appetizers that you would enjoy. They are all either fish or crab. (I know, I know fish dishes at a Swedish restaurant *gasp*) My boyfriend and I decided to get salads instead. I got a beet salad, and he got one with anchovies on it. Clearly I passed on trying his, but he said that it was," Good, but maybe had too much cheese on it." My beet salad was delicious. Drizzled with a vinaigrette, with orange slices, goat cheese, and of course beets. For dinner my boyfriend got the salmon, which again I passed on, but it came with asparagus and scalloped potatoes. I got the Swedish Meatballs. If you go to Tre Kronor get the meatballs, trust me. These yummy balls of meat were served with a yummy gravy, with mashed potatoes, lingonberry sauce, and these really yummy Swedish style pickle. I am seriously obsessed with those pickles now. With my dinner I had a carbonated lemonade that was "French Berry", I wouldn't recommend it. For dessert we had the bread pudding, which was made with Cinnamon rolls, and served with a caramel sauce with whipped cream and berries. I give it a thumbs up. By daylight Tre Kronor feels like you are sitting in your grandmother's kitchen. A very warm and welcoming vibe. When the sun sets they dim the lights, and the mood shifts into a nice intimate one. I would suggest taking a date to Tre Kronor if you want to get laid, but don't want to be too obvious. read more

I visited for dinner recently and I really wanted to like this place... at least more than 2-stars-worth. The two stars are really for the cute/quaint atmosphere and really attentive service. Unfortunately when it comes to the main event of a dinner (the food!), it was lacking. My main complaint is NOTHING that was actually served matched what was on the menu/what we thought we were ordering. Only the main component matched. So, for example, I ordered the chicken breast which (according to the menu) was supposed to be served with a light lemon wine sauce and spinach. What I actually got was a chicken breast with a dill sauce (which would have been find if I actually liked dill, ugh), asparagus (not bad for a bonus surprise), and mashed potatoes. The same thing happened to most people in my group... we all received the main component but totally different seasonings and sides from what we had expected. Good thing none of us had food allergies! Note to readers although everyone in the group got something a bit different than expected, I was the only one dissatisfied with the meal (mainly because it was ruined by dill), so we did not voice any complaints at the time. They were cleaning up and ready to close by the time our entrees came out so it wasn't worth sending anything back. Just wanted to send a heads-up to future patrons to just double check what ingredients/sides are included when you order! Or, simply ask if the menu is up-to-date. Wow! I loved everything about Tre Konor. The downstairs is a bit tight, and may worry you when you first approach. But do not fear! There is a full upstairs above the entryway that holds around 20+ tables in a very cute decor old-world home. The restroom here has a bathtub in it... It honestly feels like you're eating at someones house. The food! I had the hash... it was amazing. Literally astounding. The toast (some kind of Swedish bread) was perfectly done. Simple to make toast? WRONG! It was perfect. Lightly toasted, with just a light hint of butter throughout. This place makes me stupid for the simple goodness of breakfast! Okay, but back to the hash. The beef was flaky and tender with a light saltiness along with tender potatoes. The most surprising this about it was that there was enough of it on my plate. when it arrived I thought it was a little on the small side, but once I was half-way through the plate I realized that my eyes had shrunk back to my stomach's size and I was becoming very satisfied. The eggs were nothing special, but that in itself is real compliment. The just were. They were the eggs I wanted. The eggs the hash needed. I ordered them over-medium, and that's how they came. A more traditional Swedish restaurant than Anne Sathers. So if you like your cheap breakfast & cinnamon rolls...don't come here looking for it. The cinnamon rolls here have an orange flavor, consider yourself warned. I usually alternate between any of the egg's benedict (traditional or crab cake; and only on the weekends) or the Salmon Quiche. Bottomless coffee. Perfect Breakfast. For dinner (which is a little more expensive) I would recommend the Swedish Meatballs. If you think IKEA is good...come on over to Tre K...it will blow your mind! This is probably one of my favorite brunch spots in the city. I've been here multiple times and have never been disappointed. The wait can sometimes be a little long, but the restaurant has a Swedish shop next door where you can browse while you wait. I usually stick with an omelet, or something along those lines. The Oslo omelet is great--smoked salmon, dill, and cream cheese. I also recently had a turkey burger for lunch here and thought that was pretty tasty as well. They usually have several specials, including four different types of eggs Benedict. Also, their fresh orange juice is wonderful. My fiancee having been to Sweden many times told me horror stories of their cuisine. It was so bad they chased meals with shots of schnapps. So I was a little hesitant when we decided to go with some friends to Tre Kronor. I was very surprised to find a nice, quaint restaurants with very good food. It is BYOB which doesn't add much to my review, but I know a lot of people dig that so I thought I'd share. We started with the Gravlax which was nice. Very nice salmon with a good dill flavor. We also shared the Toast Skagen which was like shrimp salad on toast. I enjoyed it more than my comrades, which is how I like it as I get more. I ordered the duck which was cooked perfectly. It was served with wild rice that was ok and some pickled item that I found powerful yet pleasing. I also sampled my fiancee's Swedish Meatballs which were outstanding. The garlic mashed potatoes and sweet cucumber sides were also divine. I now know what I'm ordering next time. We finished with an order of the Apple Cake which was ok. The apples were a little too firm which made it hard to share/chew. It is a hike if you live in Lakeview or lower, but parking was very easy, and the prices are very nice. Our server was very nice and told us a fun tip at the end with the gingersnaps. Make sure to look for Guy Fieri's signature as he recently did an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives there. read more

A great little spot down Foster Avenue across from North Park University! Never been here for anything else but breakfast, but it's always been good food! Love the french toast and bacon......or mix it up with a few eggs & toast! They have solid potatoes! The service has always been friendly.....but sometimes can be a little slow....especially if they are crowded! Knocked a star off for that! If you are going.....i advise to get there early, as people are known to stand around while you eat.....(which can be creepy) or hang out on Foster avenue waiting for a table! A complete brunch experience is completion of the holy trinity: the food, the ambiance, and the service. Tre Kronor delivers on all three. The food is soid/typical breakfast fare (omelettes, sausages, pastries...) but with a scandinavian twist -- potato sausages, tinge of sour cream on the pan-fried potatos, rye in the havarti cheese in the omelettes. It's not the adventurous, fancy stuff like you'll find at Sola or Orange -- it's closest comparison would be Ann Sathers, but with a much more homelier, carefully prepared feel to it. The Danish pastry with raspberry I had was excellent -- right level of flakiness, not too syrupy-sweet -- and I'm told their Danish is actually flown in from Demark and baked on site. The ambiance is a welcome change from the places closer to the city -- it doesn't have the hustle-and-bustle feeling of the likes of Southport Grocery or Orange, but a much more laid back feel to it (despite the packed house). You should try to get a seat next to the windows that face the side streets, and it feels like a very cozy breakfast nook at a New England B&B. For me, service is what truly shines here -- they're friendly without coming across smarmy, they are efficient without making you feel rushed, and they take the time to engage you to explain the menu or share a short conversation without being overwhelming. It's probably not a destination for the foodies in the city to hop through public transportation connections to try out, but a great place to bring a good friend for a relaxing, lingering brunch. read more

They had me at the delicate blue ribbon tied around my napkin. ...ok, they had me at BYOB (with No corkage) and then they HAD me at blue ribbon. And the hits kept coming! The special appetizer of Brie with honey, almonds and green apple won me over so much that I was a wee bit surly that my main came....until I had my first bite of crispy, delicious Lake Trout. It was smothered in Spinach and came with Au Gratin heaven. When my dinner mate offered me a bite of their stellar pork chops I almost waved the taster away. Me. Been here 2 times now. First: Dinner ...when my parents visited. We enjoyed a variety of dishes and appetizers and everyone was happy! Wasa crackers, bread, herring, salmon, Swedish meatballs, duck, and pork chops. I think the only thing that was just "ok" was the duck. Everything else rocked! My parents asked a ton of questions about the place being featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and the waitress was very bubbly and nice. Second: Breakfast ...hit it up this morning. We got coffee, vanilla orange french toast and a side of 2 eggs. The coffee was too much - just heavy and thick tasting. Bummer. We got the eggs over medium and the yolks were 1/2 hardened, but did have a little runny in it, so was good anyway. French toast was super tasty! Perfect portion for splitsies! I saw the hand-cut hash go by and it looked tasty - maybe another time. We had the same waitress again - she is very good and smiley. My family and I visited this restaurant on our cross country trip. Other than a Taco Bell style Mexican restaurant, my wife had never tried any ethic foods. I managed to get a burger and fries loving wife, a very picky 18 year old daughter, and a 10 year old son who only eats macaroni and cheese to try scandanavian food. It was quite the struggle at first. Then they had their first bites. Food was flying all over the table as everyone wanted to try every dish. Halfway to Wholly Frijoles, I turned to my brunch buddy. "I'm really in the mood for an omelet." "Yeah. Me too. Save Mexican for another day?" I nodded, we pulled over, and I harnessed the power of the Yelp iPhone app to find us something on the far, far north side for some great brunch eats. Skimming through my bookmarks, I realized we were a mere two miles from Tre Kronor, which I'd been dying to try forever. We headed over. Parking was easy on side streets near North Park University and the restaurant appeared uncrowded. The food selection? Phenomenal. Everything from Swedish specialties like veal sausage or herring and eggs and lingonberry crepe-like pancakes to orange-vanilla french toast. My dining partner opted for the Swedish pancakes and a cup of French onion soup while I ordered the omelet special with sweet, smoky ham, asparagus, and cheddar. The lingonberry pancakes were delicate, sweet, tangy, had that homemade, rustic look to 'em, and absolutely a steal at $5.25 for two. Her french onion soup? Hot, comforting, topped with Jarlsberg and beefy with the bite of some added sherry. My omelet was fluffy and perfectly cooked. Coffee was delicious and my cup never stayed empty for long. Tre Kronor has excellent quiche. They serve it with fruits in season. That equals tasty! I've tried a lot of menu items and have rarely been disappointed. Their soups, danishes, breakfasts and sandwiches are very good and well-priced. Outdoor seating is available in the summer which is great because this place can get busy during the lunch hour. It's impossible to choose "the best" brunch in Chicago, but this would certainly compete. I can confidently say that their quiche is the best I have ever eaten. It's a pretty small place, so it gets crowded on weekends, but they do have more outdoor seating in the summer. There's also a Swedish gift shop across the street, where you can kill some time if you have to wait for a table. read more

Hi I saw this restaurant featured by Guy Fieri on the food channel last night. I had not been to a Scandanavian restaurant for years so I thought it would be nice for brunch. The service was great, the wait was a short 10 minutes, and the food was wonderful. We both had the Swedish pancakes with Lingon berry jam and it was so tender and tasty. I had fresh squeezed O.J. which was wonderful. The place was packed but not noisy, and it is not a large restaurant, just a good one. Tre Kronor is one of my favorite breakfast places in the Chicagoland area. This cute restaurant will make you want to go Sweden, as it is beautifully decorated with Swedish woodwork and other decorations. I usually get an omelette, but on my most recent visit, I had the spinach and mushroom quiche. The quiche was heavenly: the eggs were light and fluffy, and the crust was baked to perfection. While their omelettes are good, I'm seriously wish I had tried this quiche earlier - I highly recommend it! Their pastries are also really delicious, and I would suggest ordering one (or more) to eat while you wait for your main entree. read more

I *love* the stockholm omlet, which I told my friend was called the "Northerly omlet," ... it has some kind of swedish sausage, havarti cheese, and eggs of course. I always add spinach. SO delicious. I love how they stuff their omlets full of fresh spinach. I've also had the orange vanilla french toast. I wasn't a huge fan. It was kind of unexciting. It was french toast that tasted like orange and vanilla. Meh. In addition, if you want a cinnamon roll I say go to Ann Sather or Cinnabon. I wasn't a fan of their cinnamon roll. It was dry and ...had raisins. You fools!! I guess some people like raisins but ... no. Anyway, the omlets alone bring this place to 4 stars. The service is really nice. This was a awesome surprise. We ended up here around 9:15 on a Sunday morning because wait time elsewhere was too long. We were seated right away and the server gave us a long list of super fun specials with our menus. The brunch menu has a great range of traditional Swedish and more American breakfast staples along with a great selection of lunch options. I got an omelette with bleu and spinach and it was perfect! Just the right amount of bleu and it was light and fluffy. My boyfriend got a BEAUTIFUL Belgian waffle with strawberries and bananas and homemade whipped cream. My mom and I love going to Tre Kronor for a nice brunch. She lives a few blocks away and whenever we decide to go out for breakfast, we always start with Tre Kronor. So I was lucky enough to have the bestest sister in the world treat me to breakfast lately and I must say to Tre Kronor, Trey Bien! They have their own special blend of Coffee which is excellent, and while some might call it un-american all I have to say is Starbucks who? Sampled the potato and pork sausage, which was good but I would've preferred it as a lunch compliment. For the main meal I ordered the Scandinavian take on the Irish-American classic Corned Beef Hash and it was very good. The beef was cooked to perfection and the blend of diced potatoes and herbs made this dish a winner. And the eggs were cooked over medium just as I requested. I know it's just eggs, but you would be surprised how many places cant get over medium right. Also sampled my sisters Belgium Waffle which was Boneriffic! (shout out to Candice on that one! haha) It was light and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. And the whipped cream and berries were super fresh. I just love the waffles with tons of fruits on top and their quiche's. I feel like I am eating at my mom's house. It's a great place to catch up with friends and get home cooked meals.
