I started to take away a star for the price & the fact that albeit spending $30 for a mere pound of shrimp that you still had to purchase cocktail sauce. The shrimp is ok, you can definitely tell the oil they're frying them in is upstanding quality. The cocktail sauce is definitely amongst the best in the city. Because it's so far away & so expensive I doubt I'd be a return or regular customer but it's some good but expensive shrimp.

This review is strictly on the fish sandwich. This sandwich has absolutely no flavor at all. I remember when Hagen's was the place to go for a fish sandwich. I was really excited and ignored the other reviews on it. I was completely disappointed. It was like I was just eating nothing. I will never order this fish sandwich again. The good old fish sandwich is gone.

This has been on my Chicago bucket list for years now! I had been craving a fish fillet sandwich and decided to come here. The staff were really nice and the service was great. Depending on how busy it is, you either go directly to the counter or pull a ticket. They fry everything based on demand, so expect to wait a few minutes for your food. I enjoyed my fish sandwich! If there was one thing that I could change, I wish they made their tartar sauce in house.

I was craving some smoked white fish and this was one of the few places that popped up near by that carried it. The place was small but great. They had a good selection of smoked fish, fresh fish and shrimp and frozen seafood. I have been looking for frozen crawfish forever and I finally found it here. The also has some dry good and seafood utensils. This place is also good if you are craving fried fish or shrimp. I had a seafood Po-boy that was very good and packed with shrimp. They also will smoke fish for you if you bring it in which I have never seen before and is a cool service.

Went with sister specifically for fish sandwich and wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, was disappointed. Got two fish sandwiches, hush puppies and fried calamari. Hush puppies good, calamari was perfectly seasoned and tender but pretty small portion for the price. Both fish sandwiches were mediocre. Served on a cold bun that was bigger than the piece of fish. Bun should have been toasted or heated up a little. Completely took away from the fried fish and whole sandwich needed more seasoning or tartar sauce. Sister and I ended up still needing to go to Duke of Perth to get our fried fish fix.

Not like the it used to be ...

Horrible customer service after driving an hour to get there. One person on the counter and four people in the back

Love this spot! Fresh seafood and great prices! Been coming here since I was a kid. We always get shrimp and fish chips with a side of potato salad. Can't forget the cocktail sauce. Definitely need to try the sandwiches there sometime. The staff there always have friendly service. You can buy fish from the counter and they'll fry it for you and you can even bring in fish that you catch and they'll smoke it. There's also a market inside with anything that you'll need to cook the seafood that you buy such as spices, sauces, etc. Great neighborhood spot!

Found this family owned pickup/grocery store on Yelp. Glad I stumbled upon it because their spicy popcorn shrimp, jumbo shrimps and the shrimp po'boy was delicious. The service was amazing. This place definitely gets packed during certain of the day but I can see it's busy all day. Great place to come if you are craving any fried seafood or just need to purchase any fresh seafood.

Calamari snack of deliciousness

Small seafood shop in Portage Park. They have an extensive menu, smoked and fresh fish/seafood, a small pantry of groceries, and anything you may need to prepare seafood. Service was amazing, friendly and knowledgeable. My calamari snack was so fresh, tasty, and perfectly seasoned.

I've driven by this place hundreds of times and I FINALLY tried it! This place is poppin on Fridays during Lent and indeed it was but the line moves fast! They do a very good job of taking orders efficiently. It's great that they have a private parking lot too! The shrimp po boy was delicious and the shrimp was very flavorful!! They do not skimp on the shrimp! I got my fries cajun style and I recommend you do too! I could've eaten 100 of their hush puppies. This is a family owned business that has been serving the community for years. They specialize in fried or smoked seafood, salads, and sandwiches. You can even bring in your own seafood and they can smoke it for you which is awesome! They also have a small convenient store inside where they sell things like seasonings, frozen seafood, pastas, crackers, etc.

Ask the Community - Hagen's Fish Market

Are the shrimp cleaned and deveined?

Yes

Do they sell shucked clams and oysters?

Do they sell fresh & farm raised or only farm raised?

I recall seeing signs for both. But availability might change with the seasons.

We instantly joined the club for extra discounts and can't wait to come back for more. We also got lobster rolls to go and HOLY COW the meat was plentiful!!!!!!! I normally got seafood from Whole Foods or other "upscale" grocery stores. I noticed that the mussels from the Fish Guy are bigger, firmer and very "upscale restaurant" quality. I didn't realize how much I was missing out!!!!! I love this place!

I hate knocking a small business but it's really hard to be excited about my experience…read more Pre-ordered a lobster roll and the mussels for 2 (which comes with most things you need). The lobster roll was mostly bread and very little lobster. The lobster in it was very small, stringy pieces and nothing like the large chunks in their own Instagram images. I would be willing to pay more for a better sandwich with more (and better) lobster. It wasn't premium lobster in look or taste to be honest. This sandwich, in its current form, is a hard pass. Mussels were okay. A few that didn't open, but that's to be expected. I'm not sure how fresh they were since they had a bit of a fishier scent. They give you a head of garlic, a lemon, a baguette and a tub of compound butter. It's great in theory, but the butter was tasteless and I could just as easily used my own butter and other ingredients. The customer service was okay. We called ahead to make sure they had all of the elements of the mussels as part of the package and the person ringing me up still had no idea what I was talking about. In the end she made sure everything was there after I brought it up so it was fine. One other issue I had was that they just put the mussel mesh bag in my bag and they leaked mussel juice/water over everything else in the bag. Two of those things were tinned fish gifts for someone else and the cardboard was soaked in fishy smelling liquid. I know there is a new owner and I really hope he does the things he needs to improve and make this place worth it. Right now I can't see going back when there are places like Boston Fish Market that get it right.

It's a pretty casual spot and was busy when I went, but don't let that fool you! The quality of the sushi for the price is honestly hard to beat. Everything tasted really fresh, and the portions were surprisingly generous for what you're paying. I've had sushi at much more expensive places that didn't feel nearly as worth it. Definitely one of those spots where you're coming for the food rather than the atmosphere, and I'm perfectly fine with that! Service was good, and despite how busy it was, I didn't have to wait, which was a nice bonus. Parking is mostly on the nearby streets, so just something to keep in mind when visiting. Overall, an easy 5/5 for me. Fresh sushi, great portions, and prices that are hard to complain about. Would definitely come back and recommend this place to anyone looking for good sushi without spending a fortune!

I can't believe they have been around for 4 years and this is my first time there…read more When we walked in I was concerned that no one was in the restaurant. In their defense it was 4:00 and the evening rush hadn't began. We were greeted by a lovely young lady (Nicki) We decided on 3 sandwiches so we could try a little of everything (or so we thought) 1. Brisket sandwich Amazing! Perfectly cooked, 6 options for BBQ sauces. Just a great sandwich. 2. Pastrami sandwich Spectacular! My personal favorite. If you're looking for a NY style Pastrami, then go to NY. This sandwich was a thick cut Chicago sandwich. Also, not a traditional mustard but a mustard dressing...fine by me because the Pastrami is all that matters. So juicy so flavorful, a fat man's (me) dream 3. Italian beef. I was almost full and picked at the beef...really good too...but I have to say their giardiniera is amazing. My only gripe with the beef was it didn't come out hot, it came out warm...I prefer hot WAIT THERE'S MORE!!! Halfway through our meal Nicki came by to check on us and DROPPED A COUPLE OF PIECES OF SKIRT STEAK on the table for us to try...no seasoning at all not even salt...its was sooooo good that I'm going to get the steak sandwich next time.
