I hate knocking a small business but it's really hard to be excited about my experience. Pre-ordered a lobster roll and the mussels for 2 (which comes with most things you need). The lobster roll was mostly bread and very little lobster. The lobster in it was very small, stringy pieces and nothing like the large chunks in their own Instagram images. I would be willing to pay more for a better sandwich with more (and better) lobster. It wasn't premium lobster in look or taste to be honest. This sandwich, in its current form, is a hard pass. Mussels were okay. A few that didn't open, but that's to be expected. I'm not sure how fresh they were since they had a bit of a fishier scent. They give you a head of garlic, a lemon, a baguette and a tub of compound butter. It's great in theory, but the butter was tasteless and I could just as easily used my own butter and other ingredients. The customer service was okay. We called ahead to make sure they had all of the elements of the mussels as part of the package and the person ringing me up still had no idea what I was talking about. In the end she made sure everything was there after I brought it up so it was fine. One other issue I had was that they just put the mussel mesh bag in my bag and they leaked mussel juice/water over everything else in the bag. Two of those things were tinned fish gifts for someone else and the cardboard was soaked in fishy smelling liquid. I know there is a new owner and I really hope he does the things he needs to improve and make this place worth it. Fresh, delicious, comforting food; kind, creative, attentive staff! I chose The Fish Guy to cater a dinner party recently and was blown away by the quality of food and service. My guests talked all the next day about the star of the night: sous vide black cod-- perfectly light miso-marinated and firm yet buttery. Starters included plump chilled (huge!) shrimp with homemade cocktail sauce, fresh briny oysters, and bright poke with tender tuna. Yum! We stopped in to order a Lobster Roll. I haven't had one in a while and was really craving one. They weren't the most friendly here and looked at us very oddly when we were there. The Lobster roll was pricey, but not justifiable. It tasted ok, but feel like it was all lobster. Legit lobster rolls have chunks of lobster meat including full lobster claws. I would saw they use about 50 percent lobster meat and the rest I'd just filler. It's hard to say what else it had mixed in with it, but I for sure won't be back. The Fishguy Market is our go to spot for oysters and lobster rolls. We decided to stay in on NYE and were able to pick up a last minute order ($24.95 for a dozen). Buying oysters sometimes makes me nervous but TFM's are always fresh and delicious. Their lobster rolls are MP so I'm not sure what they cost now but they are always a good deal. The attending clerk took care to snip the ends of the legs off AFTER weighing the order so I got to pay more for the final product. What!? Amazing fish and great service every time I am in there which is every few weeks. It's never a bad meal when cooking the seafood from here.

I typically don't post bad reviews, as I look forward to supporting local businesses, but this one really stuck out. My wife and I came in and were looking to order a quick bite for lunch. When we walked inside, I asked if they still had a mask policy (they still do), and that is perfectly fine. We respect this decision so we put our masks on. We placed our orders and were just waiting until another customer walks in. Then the lady at the counter told my wife and I that one of us had to stand outside because they only allow two customers at most in their store. My wife was shocked and said why do we have to wait outside when we came first and placed our order? The lady at the counter didn't care and said we must be outside and continued to serve the third customer. It's important to understand that it was about 25 degrees outside and this is a rather large area in which people can easily space apart. At this point my wife and I left and decided to go elsewhere. We didn't even wait for our food. I have no intention of coming back to a restaurant in which the staff are this rude and inconsiderate. Finally, it's also important to note that when my wife and I had entered into the restaurant, there was already a customer who was there, and they were not told to stand outside when we were being served. read more

Having read all the great reviews I was super excited to give this place a try. Unfortunately it was neither the experience nor product I was expecting. As soon as I came in the stench of a stale fishy smell hit me. The two people there seemed very burdened by my presence. It was so uncomfortable I wanted to just turn around and leave - but I had made my way all the way up there so I really wanted to give the place a chance. I steeled myself and made my way to the counter where all the fish seemed limp and graying. I scoured each tray hoping that there was one viable option and that this trip up here was not it in vain. Ultimately I couldn't find anything of even average quality. It was a very disappointing day as I had spent all this time researching the place and looking forward to it. The FishGuy Market is located @ 4423 N Elston Avenue. Like many of the places I have driven by this place many times but for whatever reason had never gone in that is until today. I was reading the reviews on Yelp and they were quite favorable, rating at 4.5 stars. I finally went in today and was greeted by Janet. She is very friendly, knowledgeable about the products and willing to take the time to explain to me what the different types of fish & seafood were. She was very helpful and went on to tell me that on Tuesday (and as luck would have it today is Tuesday) they have select seafood items for $10.00/lb. The selection items vary from week to week. This week was Monkfish (which has been compared to the poor mans lobster, red fish (to red snapper) & white Bass In addition there was also a deal on Yelp for $30.00 worth of seafood for $24.00. The FishGuy deals wholesale to restaurants, retail to the public and has a small dining area for people interested in having their meals prepared. I did meet Bill the owner who came out while I was snapping some photos. We talked for a bit and he determined I meant no ill will so everything was cool. Visited for the first time after living in the area two years. I met Bill and Carol who were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The store is beautiful in its simplicity with a great selection of fresh seafood including sushi grade items as well as soups and amazing salmon, tuna, and short rib patties. So much more I wanted to try. Can't wait to go back and hope they are able to open up their counter space again once Covid subsides. I believe this establishment represents the best of what small businesses mean to a community and, in a larger sense, how businesses can act responsibly at a local level to make a difference on a global level. After the first visit, I was curious as to some of the other offerings that The FishGuy Market has on the menu. I was actually blown away this second go around. Grilled prawns with pernod butter, petite salad. Seafood of the day. The petite salad was not petite, and I will NOT complain about that. Not only were the shrimp plump, but the grilled eggplant with broccoli and corn were enough to make the salad seem like entree portions. The seafood of the day was lemon fish -- I think that's the name of the fish I recall -- with vegetarian couscous. Again, I was completely wowed with this dish. At most seafood restaurants, lobster rolls seem to be the one item that everyone rushes to buy. As to The FishGuy Market, I am more inclined to sample their other seafood offerings. This place is a seafood market but they also serve brunch/lunch. I've been here twice now just to eat, and the quality of the seafood is incredible. I had the best crab cake of my life here. We once met Bill, the owner, and had a nice conversation with him about how he goes about sourcing his fish and his passion for it. Apart from just seafood, they also carry wagu beef, and a few other quality, non-fish products. Overall, it's a great place. The concept is simple but they execute everything well. This place is a neighborhood gem if you haven't discovered it. I've heard of "The FishGuy Market" before they advertised a Groupon deal, but it wouldn't hurt to purchase a Groupon so that I could explore this place with another seafood junkie, Daddy J. "The FishGuy Market" is located on Elston, north of Montrose, in the Mayfair/Albany Park neighborhood. The Groupon deal allowed a $40 discount. I remember I spent less than $25 to purchase this since Groupon often times offers random discount for local deals. I was assisted by Janet, a friendly young lady, who explained how the deal worked and some of their popular items. Although the market place and dining room seating weren't large and ample, the appearances of their fresh seafood were worth to take a serious look at. They also featured some of the frozen specialties, such as lobster bisque, New England clam chowder, appetizers, and fish filets. Daddy and I picked up two (2) tubs of the clam chowder, one (1) pound of king salmon, and one (1) pound of cod. After the Groupon discount ($40 off), our total was $22 and some change. The Groupon deal would also work on lunch items for dining in. Since Mom is staying with us, she can make a great use of these bad boys Dad and I purchased today. Now I've found "The FishGuy Market," so I don't need to settle on lackluster seafood selections at our neighborhood grocery stores anymore. The fourth best lobster roll in the city but I'm calling bullshit on that list. The best period. Especially since Fish Guy supplies the lobster for two of the supposed top three rolls. So I've driven pass Fish Guy almost my entire life and never noticed it until a friend made me notice it, for the roll. The lobster is definitely the star tossed in what I would believe is a mayo with fresh herbs and other spices. But honestly the traditional flat side hot dog roll is a star on its pen and served perfectly. It's served with regular potato chips and pepper cole slaw that's good but I prefer a more fine slaw, not rustic. As for the spot itself like I said you can miss it but I only honestly only did because I don't usually prepare fresh seafood at home. They sell wonderful seafood and have a small but quality food menu for dine in and carry out. There are only about four or five tables which are two seaters. The dine area is small but cutesy and the space itself gives off the sterile all white vibe which I kind of appreciate with it being a fresh fish spot. Doesn't smell of bacalao anywhere. Shout out to a worker there named Janet Flores. She was pleasant and offered us samples of fresh lobster and oysters while we waited. How many neighborhoods in Chicago have a fishmonger? Well, this one does, and its a good one. I've been visiting for well over five years, and its worth a stop for some high quality seafood you won't always be able to get at Jewel, Mariano's, or even Whole Foods. You'll pay for the privilege though - seafood of quality creates bills of quantity - so be sure to sign up for the mailing list, where you'll hear of rotating specials. He runs specials most every week, and that's where you want to live. When they are on sale, I strongly urge you to get some of the sushi grade ahi tuna, which is superb, and the jumbo scallops, which are conveniently individually frozen. The fish is all excellent, as well - I've purchased hake and halibut and have been very pleased. You can even get uni here, which is amazing. I have not taken the plunge on that but I hope to soon. Lobsters here are also recommended, at sale prices. A nice bonus is that he will steam your lobsters for you, for a minimal charge, so if you don't want to deal with cooking them you don't have to, although steaming your own whole lobster is something every self respecting gourmand should do, at least once. The Fish Guy likes to branch out, and sometimes will offer morels, rack of lamb, sausages, turkeys prior to Thanksgiving, and other fruits non de mer. Always something interesting to consider. Indeed, recently he added Columbian coffee, and it is a kick in the teeth - a powerful espresso blend, and a steal at the sale price of $5 or $6 a pound. One time I ordered some lobster bisque, and found it wanting for flavor, so buyer beware. The rest? Very tasty, and worthwhile for special occasions. read more

From eggs to scallops to prepared fish, you won't find better fish coupled with the politest staff in town. I recently bought fish en papillote, what a treat! Sad today, really. Have been patronizing this spot for years, and come on- there's almost no lobster in the bisque (rather there are a few bits in a reasonably made stock from all the shells they have) but a sad display on refrigerator thaw. I also bought a side of smoked Scottish; it was advertised at $28/side; I was charged $28/pound. With a quart of the bisque I spent about $70 for a quart of decently flavored shellfish stock and a piece of nice, but improperly priced salmon. I wouldn't have even bought it if Bill hadn't walked out as I was shopping; Carol gave me a taste of it because he asked her to-she had no plans to do so before that, and in fact, blew me off to help someone buy oysters, while I was deciding on my own order. I'd have waited gladly, but I wonder if this couple know what they're risking by letting any customer go, especially long-term ones. It's super sad to write a rough review of a place I love, but it's important to hear from regulars: I have bought specialty seafood here for years and years, and with awareness of a brutal economy I...well, I really hope that they can right the ship in time. I've had maybe 80% success with their products, qua freshness and quality for price. The prices are really high, and I can't complain about the shellfish quality, but the fresh fish has been hit or miss over the last couple of years. I would rather see Bill and Carol offer nothing but perfection than to try to please everyone, during this mad time of supply issues and more. I know they can do it, but I'd like to see the will before I spend another hundred bucks there or much more, as I do, sometimes, for, well, for either things that can cost less and be as relatively good, or for some kind of respect as a customer helping to keep a small business I believe in, open, and for the required, necessary quality that comes with the price to walk out the door. Upon entrance, my immediate thought was the staggeringly small size of the store. Then I realized something: the place smelled great! No, really, probably the best smelling fish market I've ever shopped. The selection is really small, but it is probably some of the freshest and highest quality stuff I've ever bought after 5 AM and without bribing a supplier. I do things like cure my own lox and being able to talk to the monger about that is a huge plus in my book. The types of fish are indeed rare to the average consumer and usually bought up by restaurants such as wild-caught Scottish salmon or big-eye blue fin tuna (a good reason for their slightly higher prices). On the level of wholesale sale of whole tuna, blue fin can fetch $2500 for a fish and yellow fin (ahi) might only be $800. Really, anyone who knows their sushi can attest to the beauty and wonder that is the blue fin tuna in all it's rarity in landlocked Chicago with its ahi enthusiasts. Don't get me wrong, I dig on ahi, but blue fin tuna is like trying to compare a grass fed cut of delmonico to a cafeteria's chopped steak. Speaking of steak... this place also carries kobe beef and grass-fed beef at reasonable prices. If you like steak, or any part of a cow, then you probably noticed the sharp decline in the taste of beef in the past 10 years or so as cows were shot up with hormones and feed corn instead of grass. Like your dog and cat at home, they really shouldn't be eating corn, and the taste of beef by grain and by grass is markedly different. What's also great about this place is service. These guys definitely know their fish and can talk about all sorts of fishy things, but they're also super sweet and friendly about it. As a biker, on a hot summer day, you want some ice to stuff in your bag so your fish doesn't rot as you find your way home, but ice? Better than that, they use ice packs in sealed plastic bags. I've never been a big connoisseur of fish, but recently my horizons have been expanded and I've been adding fish to my cooking repertoire more and more. Buying fish just "anywhere" won't do; whenever possible, I like to buy the best quality I can find. The Fish Guy Market is on a stretch of Elston Avenue and it's pretty easy to miss if you're not looking for it (as evidenced by me driving right past it). Street parking is quite easy. Their selection isn't abundant, but rather thoughtful and well-chosen. You'll definitely find something to work with here. In addition to fish, they sell duck breast, Kobe beef burgers, albacore tuna salad, crab cakes, clam juice, and giant pieces of cooked lobster for only $3.50. I think I may just take a stab at making my own lobster rolls with it in the very near future. The store is immaculate and pleasantly fishy smelling. The staff is friendly and eager to please. When I made my purchase, I was asked how far I was traveling and they offered ice packs so my fish would stay cold. That's good customer service. All of the fish I bought was delicious: salmon, tilapia, trout and mahi mahi. A single fresh oyster. I consider this to be one of the world's great taste experiences. Chicken tastes like chicken. Trout tastes like trout. Lamb tastes like lamb. Wonderful foods, but the oyster is special; it evokes something primal and pure and indescribable. Oysters don't have their own taste. To slurp a single oyster is to take a walk along the beach on a beautiful morning, feeling the ocean's salty spray on your lips, and appreciating nature and earth and fresh air and salt and endless space and suspended time. Alternatively, you might *really* fucking love the beach. So you can bring a Nalgene bottle with you, crouch in the waves, fill it up with seawater, ocean drudge and sand, shake it up, and then chug it. Taste all that fish poop and rotting seaweed and the shell grit and decomposing sea animal. Savor it. To me, this is what it's like to eat ten oysters. I'm afraid I'm not hardcore enough. I called Isaacson and Stein, which has stellar reviews on Yelp, and asked them if they sold freshly shucked oysters. "We most certainly do." "And they're meant to be eaten there, on the spot?" "Of course. Everything we have is fresh." And so, in search of a fleeting sense of summer and freedom, I trudged to the West Loop, only to find that their "fresh" oysters came in large plastic wrapped packages, shucked and vacuumed and without shells. Just little naked orphaned oysters, huddling together for warmth and hope. It brought tears to my eyes. December days can be so dark. But in its midst I discovered The Fishguy. And a display of beautiful blue point oysters, alive in their shells, strong and authoritative. They're $1.50 each, and $2 if shucked and served on the spot, though he gave it to me for free. And yes, I can have just one. I threw in a crabcake and an ahi tuna steak (both excellent, though I will be back to partake in their fancier stuff) to go, but the oyster was the star of the day. He handed it to me, and then reached for a napkin, but alas!, by the time he gave it to me, I had already consumed my oyster. And no, I will not be dabbing even a little of this precious salty brine that lingers on my lips. Hello my name is Liz and I am a seafood-aholic. I get extreme cravings for it, maybe it's my body's way of telling me I need my dosage of Omega-3. Remember "Sam the butcher" from the Brady Bunch? Well this place is like that except its much, much cooler and with fish. The selection is small but quality is the key here. They pride themselves on it and they do it well. We LOVE their Calamari Steaks! Yes, you read correctly ... flattened out squid cut in the shape of rectangles that you saute in white wine and butter and you're in for a treat! If you are a little adventurous, ask to see their Razor Clams, I have never heard of them before but the very knowledge and friendly owner asked if I ever tried them. He even gave me two at first to try at home for free. He's no dummy because guess what I bought on my return visit? For every special occasion I come here for my quality seafood. The staff never hesitates to tells the origin of the fish in addition to offering suggestions to prepare it. There is also a small dine in portion of the market in front, but I've yet to try it. I've been to several, and this one is the cleanest, the friendliest, and the standards here are the highest. $10 Tuesdays are fantastic, and the sandwiches they make here are unbelievable. My only wish is that they had a little place for you to sit and eat your sandwich, lobster roll, or fish taco. If that were the case, I'd be there nearly everyday for lunch. I can see how this place could get four or five stars as a seafood store. This is the cleanest fish counter I have ever been to. It is spotless and they have excellent prices on a large variety of seafood and kobe burgers. This is why I was hoping the lobster roll I bought from here would be the best lobster roll in the world. It wasn't. And after paying $50 for it I felt sad. I could have gone to almost any seafood restaurant and ordered a lobster dish I felt more satisfied with. Maybe I had hyped it up in my mind too much before getting it but after all the reviews I had read about it I just expected something mind-blowingly delicious and I felt a little cheated and the person I shared it with felt the same. I wouldn't think twice about coming here to buy seafood to cook at home. In fact, I'd come here again before going anywhere else. But I will never buy the lobster roll again. read more

Stopped here today to take advantage of $10 Tuesday. I got some rainbow trout fillets. We fixed them tonight and they were very good. I also had a fried clam sandwich that they made on the spot. I am not usually big on clams, but the sandwich was very tasty and well prepared, and the coleslaw that came with it was flavorful and unique. I got a few things for future consumption, cioppino and some caviar. Both came frozen and will provide delightful dining in the weeks to come.
