I still shop here and this store really does still match my taste. As I type this I'm wearing both a shirt and socks from Moth. The shirt is one that the owner specifically brought back for me from Japan, which was really kind of her -- it wasn't something she otherwise carried, and she went out of her way to get it for me. It remains the case that if you go for a really subtle, muted color palette -- but the solution of an all-black uniform does not appeal to you -- this store is a treasure. Lots of earthy greens and browns, burgundies, multiple shades of navy: basically, the longtime menswear color palette but for women. Really nice timeless styles and high quality fabrics. I commented in my earlier review that this is a store for people willing to take care of their clothes and that remains the case. Hand-washing or delicates washing (in a mesh bag) and hanging to dry will go a long way to extending the life of these clothes. Given the price point, the goal should be to maximize wears! I can't remember the first thing I bought here, but I definitely have pieces from Moth in active rotation that are 4-5 years old. read more

The products were lovely, but the staff was quite unwelcoming. I came in ready to purchase a gift for my partner, but left feeling judged --like I wasn't seen as a serious customer or that the items were out of my price range. Disappointing experience. I won't be returning. read more

When I asked for greeting cards (not their forte) the woman working there was very attentive and even brought some out of the back. As I browsed, she helped me discuss potential gifts for my girlfriend and what styles might work based on the info I gave her, which I appreciated. When I said I was going to look around myself, she left me alone, which I also appreciated. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is that it's just not my aesthetic. read more

Such a great little shop!! We parked right across the street to stop into a convenience store and spotted Moth by luck. It's packed full with unique home pieces, jewelry & accessories, and so much more. Every little detail is thought out. We were talking to the owner while we browsed and she explained how most pieces were Japanese and Scandinavian. All so classic, timeless, simple but beautiful. While I could have spent a lot of my money in here, we were looking for a gift so after we found the three most beautiful vases I had to stop browsing. We let them know we had a long drive ahead of us with the vases so they packed them extremely carefully and thoughtfully, wrapped them in Japanese newspaper for a wierd, unique little touch, tied it with twine and then added a dried flower for a little pizzazz. It almost reminded me of that scene from Love Actually with Mr. Bean wrapping the necklace, but in the BEST way! I wish I lived closer so I could fill my home with little details from this wonderful little store! The perfect place for unique and wonderful gifts. read more

At first, everything was beautiful and exciting--the Japanese and Scandinavian selections of clothing and home goods are wonderful, if a bit pricey. The selection is well done and well curated. Unfortunately the beauty of the goods has been eclipsed by inconsistent, abrasive customer service we have received over the past year. It culminated with our attempt to purchase some items online during the COVID-19 crisis...which turned into an series of emails and an brusque interrogation by the owner that would have been appropriate in a game of croquet using flamingoes and hedgehogs--a bit obtuse, and pointy and prickly at the end. When I attempted to question the owner on this issue, we received no response. Good customer service isn't impossible. As a famous cat once said to Alice, "if you don't know where you're going any road will get you there." We know our road no longer leads through Moth; we will have to get our Japanica fix elsewhere. read more

My favorite place for gift shopping. The selection is so carefully curated , I often feel like by buying something and taking it away I'm disturbing this fragile universe. The clothing line is very consistent and the quality is amazing. But their accessories and ceramics are truly remarkable! The smallest things like postcards or kitchen napkins lift your mood from the minute you walk in. The service is great too! The way they gift wrap there is an art on its own! read more

Excellent. I only had about four days to wander Chicago for some memorable shops. From the moment I pushed the buzzer to be let in, setting me to feel I as if I was in some secret elite shop, my experience was nothing but ahh. Very knowledgable staff, bright and clean space, beautiful selection that does not seize in one specific category. I am drawn to jewelry and ...shoes but the ceramics and androgynous clothing selection with amazing prints kept my boyfriend just as entertained! Truly regret not buying a pair of leather mule clogs and currently working on contacting shop to have shipped to me. Get ready to pay a pretty penny for some very pretty designs! Moth carries clothing, jewelry and gifts from Japanese and Nordic designers, which share a certain spare, elegant, but slightly whimsical aesthetic. The shop is very well curated. Everything is made of high quality materials--wool, silk, cotton, linen--with beautiful details-- embroidery, pleating, felting, etc. I had not heard of any of the designers, which I loved! There was lots to admire and discover. Moth is definitely worth going out of your way to visit! Highly recommend!!! read more
