We struggled to find "authentic" and "non-touristy" Italian restaurants in Rome. We tried the…read moretrick of walking a few blocks away from the main tourist attractions, but still found ourselves in the area where restaurants seemed to be less authentic. We found this restaurant that was an 8 minute walk from our hotel and it was THE BEST Italian food we had during our whole trip! Location: this restaurant wasn't on a busy or bustling street. It was maybe 1-2 blocks away from the main road and tucked away. Seating: they had outdoor and indoor options. We were surprised with how much space was inside - they had about 2 floors to accommodate guests in addition to their outdoor seating. We sat inside where we noticed there were a number of local patrons enjoying their meal and speaking with the owners. As soon as we noticed the locals here, we thought we finally found a gem. Food: - the bruschetta was the best of our various finds on our trip. It was the only one that had greens on it which we were thrilled to see (there was a restaurant we visited that only had tomatoes and no basil or arugula). - the carbonara was great too. The sauce really had the flavor of the guanciale. The waiter was kind enough to offer Parmesan on the side to add in addition to the meal (we didn't ask for it!). Based on the menu, the pasta was homemade. - the spaghetti with clams was amazing as well. The sauce was light and flavorful and tasted like the sea. Similar to the carbonara, the waiter offered fresh ground pepper without us asking. It's a nice gesture knowing that most Italian places will frown at you for wanting to alter the chef's creation (sometimes you just need a little extra kick!!). - the tirimisu was very light. It came in a single serve glass jar. Though, we did notice there wasn't a whole lot of lady fingers compared to the mascarpone cheese. Also, there was a lot of chocolate powder. Nonetheless, still tasty and the perfect amount for 1 person. Wait staff: we appreciated our waiter and the overall waitstaff. Most tourist traps have waiters waiting for you outside as you walk by already offering you a table before you even know if you want to eat there. These waiters did not offer us a table upon seeing us. It was only until we approached with intent to eat here that they gave us the time of day. Also, we did notice that all of the wait staff appeared to be of Italian descent. We went to a few other places with folks that didn't seem to be Italian which had us questioning the authenticity. Overall: it was a great experience and we were thrilled to have found this place given our bad luck with Roman tourist traps. We can say we had a good authentic meal before ending our trip!!

The sauce was rich and flavorful, and the guanciale was cooked perfectly. My wife ordered the Tagliatelle al Pesto, and she loved it as well. The food was excellent, the service was warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere felt like the kind of authentic neighborhood trattoria we were hoping to find. One thing to know before you go: this place is very small. We watched several people get turned away because there simply weren't any tables available. If this restaurant is on your list, make a reservation, or you may not get in. If you're exploring the Pantheon area, don't miss this place. We'd happily return the next time we're in Rome.

Our family of four was waiting to be seated when a local family of four arrived after us and was seated immediately. We were eventually seated right next to them, and they were served bread while we were ignored and received none. We ordered wine that was never brought to the table, and at one point a waiter who was not even serving us removed our wine glasses after we had already ordered the wine. The service throughout the meal was chaotic and rude. The artichoke dish was extremely bland -- no seasoning and no flavor at all. Most of the food was greasy and disappointing. To make matters worse, we were seated directly next to the kitchen where the cooks and waiters were loudly arguing throughout our meal. We understand that service in Italy is often slower and more relaxed, and we have enjoyed wonderful hospitality everywhere else during our trip. However, this was by far the worst service we experienced anywhere in Italy. We were even asked if we wanted the bill before we had finished eating, while the local family next to us remained seated comfortably long after finishing their meal. We left feeling unwelcome and discriminated against. Unfortunately, this restaurant seemed interested only in serving locals well. If you are not Italian, do yourself a favor and dine elsewhere.
