What a perfect meal for my last night in Rome. So many dining choices in Monti; I had walked by Broccoletti a couple of times during my stay in the area and it certainly always caught my eye as it was always busy inside...but the small space of what looked like all local patrons made it a bit intimidating for me at first. So I was delighted when my hotel recommended it, taking it as a sign that I was meant to check it out. It was later in the night, around 9pm that Wednesday, and I was one of the last parties they squeezed in, though the restaurant was still bustling with plenty of energy. Such an intimate setting, but not one that is intimidating by any means. The lady who greeted me was so sweet, immediately placing their (English version) menu board in front of me, which I thought was a nice touch. I went with her recommendation of the "Artisanal Casarrece with Roman broccoli and creamy cheese." When I tell you this is nothing like what you'd expect (the only time I've seen the words broccoli and cheese are in some sad rendition of American mac and cheese)...this was amazing. The pasta was so fresh and the flavor profile spot-on. Not too salty or savory. Simple yet perfectly balanced. I polished off every morsel of the plate (not something I did much in Rome, as the dishes I had were always quite heavy). Top it off with a panna cotta (with choice of topping) dessert and I left with belly and heart full. What a wonderful experience, one to perfectly round out an incredible Roman trip. read more

You will find welcoming staff that provide excellent service. We stopped in for lunch just before mid-day closing and each had our own pasta dish. The service was not rushed and they even let us stay after the closing. The Fregola with Italian Sausage and leeks and Carbonara. Both dishes were fantastic and brought me back to my Italian roots making me feel like grandma was sending these dishes out. Truly good cooking coming out of this kitchen! Its my first night in Rome, and this restaurant was recommended by the hotel. To be honest, I wasn't needing a fancy meal, and this is about as casual as dining gets. All the tables are on the street, and the host will bring todays chalk board to your table. The menu is in English and Italian, so there is no worries understanding anything. Ask for a recommendation and they will be happy to do so. We got started with sparkling water and a bread basket. Be aware that both of these are added to the bill, so if you don't want the bread, don't accept it. You would be making a mistake, however. The focaccia is delicious. The other bread was hearty and nice eniugh as well. For our main course, I had "Vermicelli alla gricia di baccala", which, loosely translated, is spagetti with a white sauce, cod pieces, and pecorino cheese. It was The excellent recommendation of the host. I finished with a meringue dessert that had marscapone and redfruit - simply divine. As with most restaurants in Italy, they will not rush you. You actually need to tell them when you want the bill or something. This is a good thing. It let's you enjoy the meal, but, as someone used to America, it takes a little getting used to. Wow, what a find! just off the main drag and kind of in a quasi alleyway, we ducked in here as much to eat as to escape the summer heat. We got so lucky as this place serves up some excellent food. I'm a sucker for simple pasta dishes so I ordered the penne in a spicy tomato sauce. This isn't a knock your socks off kind of dish but more an exercise in subtly simple, delicious flavor. Our group was all over the place trying the barley salad, the seared tuna and even a burger. The Burger was the most interesting as it came as a party with a delicious trio of greens. With no bun or condiments the patty had to stand out, and it certainly did. Beautifully seasoned and and cooked just to medium. The tuna was simple but very good letting the fish to the talking flavor wise. I did not try the barley salad but it was well enjoyed by others and no complaints were registered :-). They've got a solid wine list with a few by the glass selections on both the red and white side. The Malvasia was very nice. Beer by the bottle as well. My only regret is that I might never get back here again. Hope some others of you can as this place is worth finding :-) read more

One of the servers clearly disliked us: served us last, refused to take an order for water and sodas, told us to wait. It was odd since we're not a demanding family and like to be kind to servers. I'm not entirely sure why this place has 4 euro signs. Maybe it gets more expensive for dinner? My friends and I came here for lunch and all ordered pasta. 4 of us got the spaghetti and tomato sauce, as suggested by the waitress. It was a homemade sauce, which was the freshest tasting sauce I've ever had! I'm not really one for eating just noodles and sauce, but this was something I felt I had to have in Rome. It did not disappoint. The noodles were very al dente. We asked for parmesan cheese to sprinkle on top and that was super fresh/good too. What I did not like was how they have limited menus on these huge chalk boards. We had to wait our turn, a good 10 minutes before we could see a menu, because another table was using it. I understand if they switch their menu daily (not sure if they do, but this is my guess), but they should at least have enough menus to go around if it's a full house. Also, maybe this is an italian thing, but they brought bread without us asking and then charged us for it. In America if you're brought bread, it's complementary. With that being said it was the best bread I had during my time in Rome. read more

Simply stellar! From the excellent wine list to the food, everything was perfect. In fact, it was so good we returned twice during our stay in Rome. The owner welcomed us warmly and offered us an English explanation of some of the items, especially wine pairings. I discovered and fell in love with a Cesanese from the Lazio region. It paired superbly with my orecchiette and the bacalao. I am still dreaming of the orecchiette with turnip greens after two weeks. Lunch time patrons seemed to be mostly professionals working nearby at the university. Dinner crowd was very hip and trendy. Friendly, helpful service - which is often the most important criteria when visiting another country not k owing the language. This cafe was recommended by our hotel and it was a great choice. We wandered in just before the dinner rush (about 7:45) with no reservations. They happily seated us - just in time - 15 minutes they were full. The dining room is small but efficient. And the owner and server both hustled to keep everyone happy. The menu is also small but efficient. They offered something different from the steady diet of pizza and pasta we had in Rome - and very little with broccoli. The seafood was fresh and well prepared. Loved it Service: Super genuine & intimate but objectively the slowest that we've experienced in Europe Now to the food- we had an absolutely life changing appetizer (baked ricotta) that saved Broccoletti from a 1 star review. On the other hand, my boyfriend's appetizer, beef tartare, looked & tasted like a raw hamburger patty. Not good. Also, our entrees (both house suggestions) were very subpar. They both included a type of cooked broccoli/spinach that was borderline inedible. Nothing glaringly specific about- just not good. Tasted like iron. I ordered the salmon with endive and they cooked the salmon well although there was no seasoning on it and had to ask for salt and pepper to flavor it. We also got the pasta carbonara, which was just ok and the server did offer to bring something else instead. He was nice, although he never introduced himself and had to look for him to get his attention. I took a taxi to get to this restaurant based on a recommendation but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, unless you are in the area and walking by. I'm still thinking about this dinner and how it was THE perfect ending to a great day. My friend and I were wandering back to our apartment and agreed to just pick a restaurant on a whim. We actually had tried to go down the street to another place and the guy wouldn't seat us at a table that was set for four, because there was just the two of us. So off we went, into the dark to find another place. It was starting to get late and having worked in the restaurant industry, I really didn't want to be "those" people coming in later and hanging out. Because we had every intention to find a place and get a bottle of wine. We walked up to the Broccoletti and people were just being seated at another table, when I peaked inside and saw a table for two still available. A woman came to the door immediately and showed us to our table. The menu for the wine and the food is on a blackboard that was on our table, and they bring one around to the other tables to consider. Not too many choices, which is nice, because it's a small restaurant with just about 10 tables total, so I liked the fact that they have a smaller menu, they specialize in special dishes and the dishes change when they want them to. I asked the server for help with the wine, explained what we liked, told her a price range of what we'd like to stay within and viola, one of the best white wines I've had in long time. My friend took a picture of the bottle and said she's going to research how to order a case once she got back home. We praised her on skills and the wine list in general. When we got to ordering, I had the amatriciana - which was called the "broccoletti" and my friend had the paccheri. It took us only a bite, still chewing, to look each other in the eye and we both knew we were saying to each other: "mmmhmmm, this is good" we were silent and chowing down, until about half way in and we both said, okay this is the best meal we've had in a few days. Hands down. The two women working that evening, were hustling around and always interacting with the people at the tables. Service was great. We were too full to fit in dessert or anything, but we talked about coming back a second night if we had the time. Very kind...not all places in Rome like Americans and even if they like you they will still charge a Service or "Servizio" fee jus to sit down. $2 or more per person, but this place did not and was very elegant and filled with vino. read more

Hidden gem on charming cobble stone street filled with one-of-kind boutiques. Delicious fresh food including homemade fettuccine. The octopus was tender and delicious, and their tuna + squid tartare is fantastic. This was one of the many restaurants on Via Urbana where we stayed while in Rome. We picked this because of a recommendation on a blogging website. The restaurant is small, but attractive. The food was tasty, but not particularly special. We both had fish, salmon and codfish, for our main courses and they were fine, but not memorable. This was echoed by the service which was also fine, but our server seemed to want to be anywhere else but at the restaurant that night. So I wouldn't be sad if we never got back, but on the other hand, I have to mention that the restaurant was full with locals who seemed to be enjoying the food, so perhaps this one was just not for us. read more
