Definitely call ahead--It's not a walk-in type of place but that's to keep the environment peaceful and relaxing. Very client-focused atmosphere. I got lost and was kind of annoyed when I got there and was late for my appointment, they took me anyway, though someone else was waiting. I was grateful, I felt foolish for not being able to find the building (and literally drove up and down University 4 times) but apparently that happens to everyone on the first visit. I'm not familiar with the San Diego nail scene and desperately needed a mani + pedi while my sister needed her brows waxed. We found Tranie Nails by way of Yelp. Initially, we were skeptical of the reviews since there were barely any less than 5 stars. However after my experience, I have to say this place deserves each and every single star awarded. The mani and pedi was very thorough from the soaking and cutting of my cuticles, nail shaping and buffing, and application of the polish. I'm one of those people who is very particular about how my nails are shaped, how evenly polished is applied and I'm critical of the consistency of nail polish. Jimmy and Tranie's services exceeded my expectations. I think what makes this place stand out from others is that Jimmy and Tranie do not look at their customers as "customers,"instead as clients and they take the time to get to know you. They were very mindful of little things such as making sure I didn't place my bare feet on the floor and put a towel down so my feet wouldn't get dirty. I never felt rushed, the foot massage was amazing and I felt relaxed. Plus, they keep their establishment very clean. I can understand why it's difficult to get an appointment here. 5 stars and more if I could rate higher. I'm sure I'll visit San Diego again and I'll definitely be back here! I have been going here for a few months now. I quit getting my mani-pedis for a while to save some money and just did them myself. I had a trip coming up and wanted to treat myself. I found them originally on yelp, made an appointment, and was very pleased with the service. They are friendly, care about their customers and the prices are reasonable. The thing I appreciate most about them is they really do pay attention to what you want and they remember you. On my second visit, they asked me about my trip. What a great memory. Even today when I got different first and second coat colors, Jimmy said, "you did that combination before!" How did he remember that? I tried shellac a few times when it first was becoming popular, and they never lasted more than a week. I gave them a shot here and they really do last 2 1/2 to 3 weeks! One time Tranie even said, "you really don't need a manicure, your cuticles look fine, just a polish change." I appreciate the fact that they don't upsell and in fact recommended I do less. I'm back to regular mani-pedis. P.S. Do make an appointment, They are always very busy, but with an appointment, I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes. I am a new customer to Tranie Nails (I've been twice) but I love their work. Both times have been excellent customer service, product, and experience in general. I've been to A LOT of nail places here in San Diego and I have only been mildly satisfied with the services I was receiving. I'm a little bit picky, but I don't really complain (though I should since I'm paying hard earned money) so I was just getting used to bad service and bad nails in general. It was time for a change... I work at a gym on La Mesa Blvd. and I was looking for a good salon around the area since I was just getting off work. I yelped, and this place came up! I called the shop and they said they could take me that day at 3:00. I went in at 3 and they greeted me by name even though they'd never seen me before (how nice is that?). Tranie is really on top of her appointments. Since there is only 3 of them working, they have to be! Anyway, she told me to pick out a color and I maybe waited a total of 5 minutes to sit down in a pedicure spa chair. I wanted to match my hands and feet so Jenny picked out the perfect matching color for me. They started on my toes and nails at the same time, which is nice because it saves time. Conversation flowed really well, Jimmy and I bonded quickly since we both watch the same comedian on Youtube (Russell Peters, look him up...well worth your time). He gave me the best leg massage I have ever had! Meanwhile, Jenny was doing my nails and let me say, I'm pretty particular about my nails but she did an AWESOME job. My shellac normally starts lifting in 1 1/2 weeks after it is put on but I lasted 2 1/2 weeks without a lift! I only went back to change since my nails were so grown out! Let's just say I'm in love. :) The shop is small so don't expect anything glamorous like at a fancy shmancy salon but their prices are GREAT (since its not fancy salon and they charge you what it cost them so buy their products which is...UNHEARD OF!) so its totally worth it; $23 for pedi, $23 for gel manicure. They have water, bathrooms, and private parking in the back. A word of caution though, the shop is small and it is easy to drive by it...I did the first time. Its on the right side of University Avenue so keep your eyes peeled! Its in a small shopping center. After 18 years in the business, Tranie, Jimmy, and Jenny have it DOWN. Found this slot looking on Yelp. They are a lot of great reviews so I decided to take a chance and do a walkin. Thankfully I was able to get in with no wait! Awesome!! I got gel polish w/no mani and pedi. Brought in my daughter as well and she got a polish change. Two different ppl worked on my hands and feet. I love that the massage chair on spa pedicure was comfortable, unlike a lot of places. I'm assuming the male owner was doing my pedicure. He was really, really, nice. Asking if everything was good, Am I pleased with the service, do I need anything,etc. I was happy they were making sure everything was good. I got gel "mood" polish. It's pretty cool. My Minnie Mouse design I got is starting to chip and it hasn't been 10hrs yet. It's fine because my pedicure was amazing. He gave me a really great massage, she cleaned my cuticles without hurting me. He even gave me a "lesson"on why my nails where white. That was nice info. I loved that they are quick yet efficient. It was a nice jester they gave my daughter a juice box and a hello kitty cookie treat. That was just icing on the cake after her polish. I went to Tranie in years past when I was in the area, and always loved them! I returned today and felt compelled to write a review. Their shop is smaller than some around it, so it's best to call ahead and make an appointment. But the smaller size, to me, is just a perk. It makes for a quaint, and more personable experience. Tranie and her husband work very hard to keep the shop clean. They have two big screen TV's to watch. They provide such amazing service, and are so sweet and hospitable. You are greeted as soon as you walk in, by name! Many of their clients are returning clients, some who have been going to them for years. Tranie's husband gives the BEST pedi massage ever. He knows what he is doing and takes his time. They both engage with you, speak to you and converse with you. This is a great little salon! Don't let the outside fool you, it isn't a cramped salon. It is small, yes, but they only have 3 manicure tables and 3 spa pedicure chairs, so it is very intimate without being jammed in. I chatted with the owners (who are the nicest people and provide a great salon experience) and another patron who has been getting her mani/pedis there for the 20 years the salon has been around. It was so fun and the first time I have ever had such a personal experience at a salon. I have found my new salon in my new neighborhood! Perfection! First of all I'm a hairstylist so I'm always working with my hands and it's really hard to make a shellac manicure last past a week! The only con about this place is they aren't open on Mondays (one of my two days off) so it's a little difficult to make an appointment, especially since they are so busy as it is! OUTSTANDING. I've been getting pedicures on a regular basis for the past 8 years. Since moving to California a couple of months ago, I've been a little scared to try someplace new. After reading Tranie's reviews on Yelp, I figured it was worth a try. I'm so glad I did! I've paid upwards of $100 for a pedicure before and rest assured, Jimmy's pedicure was 10 times better than any one I've ever gotten. I had a 1:30 appointment and showed up a little early to scope the place out and it was exactly as described here, small and intimate - 2 pedi chairs and about 4 mani chairs. It was a beautiful day and they had the windows and doors open so the shop smelled of fresh air, not chemicals and saw dust. I was instantly greeted at the door and even though I had never been there before, they asked if I was the 1:30 appointment for (my name). I was surprised by their attention to detail and VERY pleased. I was promptly put in a comfortable massage chair while I soaked my little piggies. What a massage it was! The chair didn't stop the ENTIRE appointment, not like was the cheap crummy ones that give out every 10 minutes. Went through the usual cleaning and conversation. And then.. the leg and foot massage started. I usually have to ask (and pay extra for) a GOOD leg and foot massage. A lot of salons I've been through just want you in and out of their so they can shuffle the next walk-in into your chair. NOT JIMMY & TRANIE! The girl next to me and I got very good massages - they spend AT LEAST 10-15 minutes massaging each leg. EACH. LEG! Jimmy asked me how I was doing and if there were any areas I'd like him to work on - I almost fell asleep he had me so relaxed! Same for the girl next to me who Tranie was giving a pedi. Then came the scrubbing and the polish. I have TINY toe nails and I usually end up with polish all over my skin when being painted. Again, not with Jimmy. He was precise with every movement. Then, he sat me in a chair to dry my toes. There was no pressure to pay the second it was over or rushing my out of the chair and straight out the door. I got to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and pay when I was ready to leave. I'm getting ready to move up to the Mira Mesa area, but I will continue to return to Tranie Nails despite the drive. They have amazing customer service and a job well done. AND their prices are very low for the services you receive. I got a fantastic pedicure for $23 - I was so happy with the service for the price that I ended up tipping Jimmy $10 out of sheer excitement to FINALLY have a salon I can trust here. This place is somewhat hard to find if you don't know where you are going. The staff at this salon is incredibly sweet and they seem to care about their clientele. I was happy about that. It's always good to have good customer service. I have been to salons where the staff was not at all friendly. The pros: 1. Nice family owned business with nice people. 2. Prices are reasonable. The cons: 1. After my pedicure, I didn't see anyone disinfect the spa tub before other people came in for pedicures. This is not to say they aren't clean, I am simply stating I didn't see it cleaned and disinfected. 2. Somewhat hard to find. After the fact I did notice they had parking in the back. Not sure how big the lot is. 3. The place is tiny! There was only one other customer there when we came in but I would definitely make an appointment because there aren't many stations. As for my services, I received a French pedicure and a free nail painting (French) because my friend mentioned my birthday was in a couple of days. I noticed after we left that not all of the nail and toenails were fully painted. While my nails looked decent, my toenails look pretty bad. After about 8 hours I am seeing some chipping and I have not had that before. The lines don't seem to be nice and curved so that is a bummer. I am going to have to see another salon to get my toenails fixed. :( I probably should have paid better attention but there would have been no way for me to know what my polish would chip so fast. read more
