I can always find things I need in their store with fair prices. Customer services are flexible and helpful. It is now my go to store.

To make a long story short, they were out of my first choice on the menu. As I was considering what else to order, the owner came up from behind and made a snide comment and then walked away. I was surprised, especially since in past years, Freight House was a friendly place to stop. I left right away and was upset in the car. Suggestion 1: let people know when they sit down at the counter if you are out of menu items. Suggestion 2: don't be rude to your customers. Wow, can't believe that I actually have to "suggest" that.

The beauty of Western Mass is summed up in the view of the Connecticut River from the bridge, especially during foliage season. But I digress, back to the Freight House, my favored stop on my tours. It's a worn place, antiques lining its broad porch and spilling over into the neighboring area with cement and stone yard ornaments. Don't be deterred! Inside you'll find rooms stuffed with antique brick-a-brac, but make your way to a stool at the food counter. Service is prompt and personable - well, of course, there's only a handful of stools. The prices are fair, and I love this unassuming oasis and the folks that work here, so I tip generously. I've sampled most of the menu items, and always been satisfied. But the hidden gems are the homemade pies. I love a good pie, and most pies don't measure up. I look for a great crust, flakey on top and bottom. Then I want a good filling, full of authentic flavor, not cloyingly sweet, or runny, or gelatinous. Tough to find? Yup! Found it here, at Freight House, every time. Great pie (and food), a cup of coffee, and I'm off to the French King bridge, the Quabbin, and the open road.

When I entered the store one of the saleswomen did not greet me but instead looked uncomfortable by my presence. As I walked in I began to look at the clearance rack in the rear of the store prior to looking at full priced shoes, and was followed throughout the aisles. Not once did the saleswoman ask me if I needed assistance, but continued to monitor me. As I made my way towards the woman's shoe aisles, she continued to observe my every move and proceeded to remind me that I was in the woman's shoe section. At this point it was apparent that she would continue to follow me and make me feel uncomfortable, so I decided that it would be best to leave the store and try another shoe store. This overt profiling is something that should not be accepted and is something that was extremely demeaning for me. I will not shop at this location again.

Like they don't care if I buy anything or not. I said "thank you" thinking this might jog their memory after checking out, but they just said "you're welcome". I spent $350 on shoes, but even if I had bought a pair of socks, I would expect it. I don't say anything to the clerk because I don't want to embarrass them or make them feel uncomfortable. As a small business owner in Greenfield, It's just sort of unthinkable for me not to thank someone for buying in my store. It's so easy to buy things online. They are never busy at the Greenfield Bootlegger's, so it's not like people were running around and just forgot to be pleasant. I'll be honest, I don't shop at this store because I think it's the greatest store. The selection and availability of sizes is not great. I shop there because it's in my town and convenient. I think this is the last time in there for me. Scott Seward 75 Pierce Street Greenfield, MA 01301
