Sorry, no bueno! Ate at TQLAS last night. Ordered the Tikka Masala, Grilled Octopus, Ahi Poke and Tamarindo Shrimp Tacos, because we were told that these asterisked menu items were house specialities/customer favorites. All were terrible. We wondered if perhaps the chef had no Mexican food chops and just put random fillings onto a soft corn tortilla and called it a day. We tried eating the fillings themselves, without the tortilla, but the shrimp was too tangy, the octopus too rubbery, the ahi plain and the tikka masala not true. Also ordered guacamole and a salad, which were decent. Worst part was my husband's sipping tequila. He was excited by the restaurant's extensive tequila menu, but when he ordered Fortaleza Anejo, what he received was some silver tequila, which he knew not be FA, as the latter is an anejo (golden in color) and tastes amazing. When he brought this to the server's attention, the server took the drink back and came back with (some other) anejo tequila, explaining that they were out of the Fortaleza. My husband accepted this, but then saw that, when the bill came, he was charged for the more expensive Fortaleza tequila. Not good! If you are going to position yourself as an "Agave Bar & Grill," ostensibly serving Mexican food, focus on both and do them well. Neither was the case. This is unfortunate, because the restaurant is located in the quaint Old Town center of La Quinta, and is the lone Mexican restaurant there. Worst Mexican food I've ever had! To begin with, the margaritas were awful, too strong to even drink, you can totally taste the cheap tequila! Then the food came, rice was mushy and as soon as it cooled down, it was hard! Ordered some enchiladas and that was horrible too. Like what is the chef cooking back there?! I took about two bites and I was done. We noticed another couple come in too, they ordered drinks and then asked for their tab because everything they kept wanting, the waiter kept saying, "oh it's not ready yet" or "we don't have that", then why have it on the menu or be open?! The waiter was so sweet though! Do yourself a favor and go to "Yes, Please" across the way for some delicious coffee and food. You sure won't regret that! read more

TQLAS is located in the La Quinta Village where there are several other restaurants. As businesses started to open up (again), the village has become packed. After checking in with our "go to" spot for lunch, we discovered the wait was really long. We had seen TQLAS before, and the setting was very appealing. We checked in and discovered the wait at TQLAS was more reasonable. After a short wait, we were seated and took a look at the happy hour menu, which was from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. We ordered a beer and margarita, both were good. For lunch, we ordered the Street Corn (one cob is included in the happy hour for $3.95), Tacos Alambre, and the Flautas Coyoacan. The street corn was amazing, the beef in the Tacos Alambre was a little fatty but the mixed vegetables were very good, and the Flautas were good. The following day, our friends joined us in the desert and wanted to try TQLAS for lunch, which was outside the happy hour period. On this day, I had the Street Corn and Shrimp Tacos. The Street Corn came with two cobs and again was amazing but pricey at $9.95. Our group actually had three orders of the Street Corn, which was a total of just under $30.00 just for 6 cobs of corn. I noticed later the website indicates "a trio" of sweet corn, but our orders as noted above came with 2. I also ordered the Shrimp Tacos, which were average. Regarding the staff, they were excellent. The food and prices for what you get received 3 stars, and the setting and staff received 5 stars. Although the Street Corn was really good, the price is only right during happy hour. read more

We reached there and were told that they'll have a table ready for us in 30-40 minutes so we put our name in the list and went for a walk. I was on a girl trip with my daughter and young granddaughter, staying at an Airbnb close by and we found this place on yelp and thought we would give it a try. Ordered two chicken burritos in a bowl over the phone. When I arrived to pick up everyone was very friendly as I waited for the order to be ready. The restaurant seem to have great ambience as well. Since I was on vacation, I snapped a few pics of the place. Food was ready in a timely manner. Brought food back and we dived in. I must admit it wasn't what we expected. Perhaps they didn't have the proper "TO-GO" boxing for the meal. Maybe it would have plated differently if we ate at the restaurant. But the food separated in sections just didn't go well together in both my opinion and my daughters. The chicken was tasty, even though it wasn't grilled chicken, but everything else was bland and I didn't have any sour cream on my plate. We were definitely disappointed and wished we ordered something else. However, great customer service goes a long way in my book and this place deserves an A+. The young woman who served us was very attentive and worked hard. 5 Stars and did not reduce tip, because she earned it. Third. The food is ok. Some major kitchen mishap had the restaurant out of rice. Found out when entrees served. Server was mortified. For the manager/owner, please read my reviews before you clap back. I usually only post my good reviews. The food isn't bad, it's just not good/great. Rather bland and not worthy of the drinks or the concept. We had a bachelorette dinner here for 17 people and had a reservation for 7:30. We had the reservations over a month in advance and we didn't sit until after 8. I'll start with the pros- -the pitchers of margaritas were pretty large. -they have free chips and salsa, which the previous owner did not. -the guacamole was a good portion size, and tasted good. -friendly atmosphere -the waitress was attentive in the sense that she checked on us a lot, but I wouldn't say she follow through with the things we were asking for (e.g., not bringing napkins or cups or silverware). And then the cons- -Of course, us being seated late kind of messed up our timing for the night. -Then, they were out of rice. So all of the dishes were unable to be served with rice, and they gave us vegetables instead. But only half of the people's dishes came with the veggies, and the other people got no substitute, even tho we all said okay to getting veggies instead. -then two of the meals, the two quesadillas came out after all of the food was finished. We were ready to leave, and then those two dishes came out. We assumed they weren't going to bother with them, or at least take them off the bill because we were already on our way out and weren't going to eat them. -The queso was greasy To note: this may be a pro or con to you, but if you are not from California, this is not typical queso. Some of us are from California, some of us are not, but even if you are, I would still say the queso was greasy. -The steak tacos were average steak tacos, not great, not bad. -I had the salon salad and I though the salmon was really good and had so much flavor. -the el pastor bowl was good, but no rice because they were out. And only half of the bowls had the veggies, so the other ones were lacking substance. The meat was flavorful tho. -overall, the place is under new ownership and does have potential. read more
