We had a couple quotes for our fence. TBC was actually recommended by another fence builder that was out of my price range (that company only used the highest end cedar...from Canada...which I guess is the only place where good cedar can be found). Anyways, I spoke with Chris the GC for TBC. He's a personable guy who gives you answers straight. My fence was damaged from the high winds we encountered a month or so ago. Thus, I needed a new stretch of 113 feet of fence ASAP (that 113 feet of fence was probably put in 25 years ago). I was able to take a photo of the fence, give him the fence length and he shot me an estimate. It was that simple. The gents that TBC subcontracts to build fences are some great guys. They worked their butts off and the quality of that work was OUTSTANDING. I felt no need to make suggestions for improvement during or after the fence build. They cleaned the work site in a surgical manner. They even built extra part of the fence that wasn't part of the estimate because it was necessary to get the job done right (I'm not going to explain...as long as I understand it then that's all that matters). So, TBC is a GO for any folks looking for a good price and quality work to be done. We will be looking to TBC for future work to be done on the interior of the house. read more

We are in the process of getting the house ready to sell ASAP. After finding this business through Angie's List I chose them over a much higher quote. A detailed quote was received, with a payment schedule. A general completion time of 4 weeks was given, as well. Unfortunately, the new HVAC system was being installed at the same time, and ran into issues that caused extra holes in the drywall ceiling in the lower level to need patching, as well as a door trim, wall, etc. This was not the fault of TBC, and I asked for a quote on how much extra this would cost. Once TBC began work, I noticed a few things that concerned me. There were only 2 workers. The two workers that were here only came out for a few hours each day, and only worked in the hall bath. I do not understand why that they couldn't/didn't try to work on more than one thing at a time once the HVAC crews were out of the way. Eventually, they were a week behind. As a result, my kitchen cabinets were delivered a full week before the kitchen was started - and that is when the rain started. Since I have no garage, the cabinets were sitting in my open carport. I sent an email with my concerns. He tried to blame the delay on the "extra" things they had to do: removing the tub, and opening the shower door opening a little in the lower bath. I responded that those things wouldn't take an extra WEEK. I kept asking for a quote to add the painting to the job. After asking several times, he finally replied that his painter was unavailable. I also kept asking for the accessories in the hall bath to get installed - the grab bar/shelves in the bathtub, as well as the towel bars/toilet paper holders, etc. He replied that they typically don't do those things if they aren't the ones painting. I pointed out that the shelves/grab bar in the bathtub area didn't require paint... no reply. The kitchen went beautifully. The cabinets were installed exactly as I had wanted, and the workers did a nice job of getting it done. The microwave was hung rather high, but when I asked for it to be lowered, it sounded like doing so would cause an additional delay... so I gave up. Meanwhile, I had exchanged emails about getting the drywall patches done. A quote of $2000 to do all the work was sent, and I acknowledged that it was fine. Mr. Eckert and I set an appointment to talk about that on May 19th in the afternoon, after I would get home from teaching. That day, I was expecting to sign the agreement to complete the drywall repair. Instead, he announced that they had completed the existing contract, and that they would not be doing the drywall at all. I was SHOCKED. There had been NO indication from him that he would not be doing this. He offered me the name and phone number of other contractors. He asked for final payment, and left. Afterwards, I started looking around and found other things that weren't quite done properly. I wrote a long email. An excerpt is below: ----------------------------------------------------- 1) There were a couple of SMALL areas in the drywall in the kitchen that could have been patched easily. Instead, they just put the base molding in place, right next to them. 2) the counters were left covered in sawdust. There was also sawdust in the cabinets that I had to vacuum out. 3) The areas of the granite backsplash that extend beyond the tile backsplash didn't even get caulking. There is a gap there on the top and sides. 4) *I* had to ask for the quarter round to be installed in the foyer to finish the floor. Yes, it was hidden from view at that time, but shouldn't there have been a "punchlist" somewhere? 5) I asked at least 3 times about getting the shelving in the shower installed. I sent at least 2 emails about it, one indicating that without the grab bar, my son had fallen in the shower and injured himself. Apparently the safety issue didn't matter. You KNOW it's not something *I* am capable of, SHAME ON YOU. 6) The electrical switch cover in the hall bath never got put on. 7)The "stickers" on the glass shower door downstairs were left for me to peel off. --------------------------------------- After I sent this email to him, I realized two other issues: the dishwasher was not screwed in, so when you open the door, it tilts down. And, in the lower level bathroom, no molding was placed at the baseboard. Granted, that was not SPECIFIED in the contract, but it wasn't specified for the kitchen and other bath, either... those little details aren't things that should have to be specified. The bottom line is that while Mr. Eckert's crew technically met his "contractual obligations", they certainly fell very short of doing a thorough job. They didn't "go the extra mile", and they didn't care. He was cool, but professional, in speaking to me, but he definitely wasn't "friendly", even when I tried to be. I am left with a house that still needs work before I can sell it. Details mean a lot to me, and it was clearly something they didn't care about. read more

Total Building Concepts does a lot of business in my neighborhood so when we had a small repair job that nobody seemed to want to do, I gave them a call. They responded quickly and gave us a reasonable estimate. Keith, the owner of the business, has many years of construction experience. His four sons all work for this business and they do the majority of the work. It's a local business that doesn't contract out much to day laborers. All of them had been in my house and they were all polite and professional. The small repair job became bigger once they started working on it due to the incompetence of previous contractors. We're not happy about the increase in the scale but we couldn't stop then. They didn't follow completely to our list, some changes they made we liked, some we didn't. Keith stopped answering my texts and phone calls once the job was done. I hope he would respond if I have a real issue in the future. Make sure to write down everything and be firm about what you want, to eliminate miscommunication. I think that's the rule of thumb with any contractor. read more

We just finished a lower level/basement renovation with Total Building Concepts which basically was a total tear out of 70% of the space, then rebuilding, adding a custom steam shower, adding lots of storage in the laundry room, new floors throughout, a feature brick wall for my husband's studio. Gas lines and plumbing had to be moved, new framing, drywall, tiling and all the other finishing touches. We can wholeheartedly recommend them. There was never a moment where we unhappy that we had hired them, everyone was professional, accommodating and conscientious. read more

Our home has a crawlspace under a large room. The crawlspace connects to our full basement via a hatch door. This room is warmer in summer and colder in winter, and mice enter the crawlspace through the foundation vents. Once they get in the insulation under the floor, it slips down and worsens the problem. So - we wanted the crawlspace insulated and regulated, and able to be open to the rest of the basement. TBC gave us a very reasonable quote; made some excellent suggestions (such as using vented panels to hold the insulation in place between the joists and to keep future mice out); showed up as planned and did the work. The project was started and completed on time plus the project area was completely cleaned up when they left. I will hire them again for future projects, and highly recommend them! read more

Total Building Concepts gave us our DREAM KITCHEN!! My husband and I spent a considerable amount of time interviewing and selecting a contractor, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. The remodel was quite challenging given numerous unforeseen issues that was no fault of Total Building Concepts. Yet, throughout the process, they handled things with a great deal of professionalism, patience, flexibility, and kindness. We had our first party last night, and friends remarked that our kitchen can be in a magazine. It is truly gorgeous and we have Total Building Concepts to thank. Keith was recommended to me by a friend and I was very impressed in our consultation with his ideas and professionalism. His pride in his company's reputation of over 30 years in business and his commitment to maintaining that reputation for high standards was clear. My initial plan was to renovate my bathrooms (1 full and 1 half), and Keith was endlessly patient with my changing ideas and was generous with his expertise and advice as to what would work in my home and what wouldn't. He even found the perfect countertop for the full bathroom! I ultimately decided to expand the renovation to putting laminate hardwood floors throughout my house, painting, and installing a new light fixture and Keith and his sons easily accommodated the change and did a wonderful job. I felt completely comfortable with having Keith, Craig, Todd, and Brian in my house. The only difficult part of the renovation was frankly caused by my requirement that we use Empire Flooring for the laminate flooring (I was trying to match flooring they'd put in the basement a few years ago and thought this would be the easiest solution). Empire turned out to be a nightmare and Keith and the guys went out of their way to try to get the job done while dealing with complete incompetence. Keith even rushed back from his vacation so he could be waiting for the installers (who didn't show up on time and then brought the wrong material, but that's another review). If it hadn't been for Empire, Total Building Concepts would have finished the job on time with their original estimate. Now that it's all over, I'm loving my gorgeous new house and Keith and Total Building Concepts will always be my first choice. 100% pleased with their work and, even more importantly, their work ethic and commitment to their customer's satisfaction. read more
