Italian restaurants and New York City just go so well together. Toscana 49 is a cozy little Italian restaurant on the East Side. We made reservations well in advance which was good because there was a large crowd here on a Saturday night. We started off by ordering a bottle of Chianti. For appetizers, we went with the Carpaccio and Eggplant dishes. Entrees ranged from my Chicken & Sausage to my wife's Veal Scallopini. All the dishes were well prepared and delicious! We are from Baltimore, and we so enjoyed our dinner at this restaurant two years ago we had to come back again. We made a reservation online and they had our table ready when we arrived. Our server, Clay, was delightful and attentive. We enjoyed glasses of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Chianti Classico. My husband I and shared the Pappa al Pomodoro, which is a delectable Tuscan bread and tomato soup as well as the Paglia e Fieno con Panna, Prosciutto e Piselli. This pasta is homemade "straw and hay" pasta with prosciutto and peas in a cream sauce. It took me right back to when I lived in Rome in the 1960's. It was a pasta that we loved to order there and that we rarely see on a menu in the USA. It was superb. Our friend started with the Insalata Cesare (Caesar salad), which she said was so crisp and fresh. For her main course, she ordered the Pollo alla Casseruola, which was an enormous portion of boneless chicken with sausage and peppers. She was so impressed with the depths of flavor. Wow! What a great experience I had here at Toscana49. We were created immediately from walking up from the sidewalk. We came during a Saturday lunch to find plenty of availability. I first appreciated being sat away from other diners at a 4 top for 2 guests. Service was quick, on top of checking in, filling glasses and immediately clearing the table of dishes. Food was also amazing. The bread service comes with a nice dipping oil. We shared a Cesar salad which should have for two and then the entries were the ravioli with home made cheese and the special tortellini with Italian sausage. The Avioli was buttery, and the tortellini ended up being very hearty and filling. Finally. We topped this all off with a in house made cheesecake. This is my favorite Italian in the city for sure, such a hidden gem! read more

As a visitor in New York, I was bracing myself for a dinner that would either cost me a second mortgage or come with a side of disappointment. But thanks to Yelp (and perhaps divine intervention from the pasta gods), I stumbled into Toscana 49, which wasn't too far of a walk from my hotel, and I'm so glad I did. This place isn't flashy. There's no pretentious signage, no "influencer corner" with a flower wall. But, what it does have is outstanding Italian food that speaks for itself. I started with the Caprese salad, featuring fresh basil, ripe tomato, and luscious water buffalo mozzarella (which, let's be honest, sounds like something you should only be able to get while watching the sunset in Tuscany). Perfectly balanced, light but satisfying, especially when I put some balsamic on it. A very classy start. For my entrée, I was feeling fish, so I went with the red snapper, which they had served with tomatoes, black olives, and capers. It was bright, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. If I lived nearby, I'd be back weekly like an old-school regular who the waiter greets by name. Oh, and shout-out to the bread basket. Not just a formality here as it came with this tomato-y, garlicky, herby dipping sauce that I couldn't quite identify, but let's just call it sun-dried tomato magic oil and move on. I'd buy a bottle of it if they sold it. Or bathe in it. No judgment. Then came the tiramisu, and let me tell you...this is where a lot of Italian places either fly or flop. Toscana 49? Full-on triple-axel stick-the-landing. It was light, creamy, not too sweet, not too boozy---the way I love my tiramisu. Prices were shockingly reasonable, especially for Manhattan. Like, "Wait... did they forget to charge me for something?" reasonable. No sticker shock, no tourist tax. Just good food, good value, and great service. If I lived in New York, Toscana 49 would absolutely be on my repertoire of Italian spots. read more

Met up with some friends for lunch when we realized our other option was closed for lunch on Thursdays. Very friendly service. Very noisy (almost cacophonous, my poor husband couldn't hear anything) our two adult children sat at their own separate table and ordered pasta which neither of them particularly enjoyed: Paglia E Fieno Con Panna, Prosciutto E Piselli - 3/5 Tagliolini Cacio e Pepe - 3/5 They didn't tell me more but both said it was "just okay" We had: Insalata di Carciofi - 4/5, solid salad with artichoke hearts, a little heavy on the dressing Special halibut with lemon wine sauce - 5/5, I thought this was outstanding and delicious Dentice alla Livornese - 3/5, red snapper with tomato, black olives, capers, husband ordered this and he said it was fine\ Salmone alla Griglia - 5/5, atlantic salmon with caper pesto, both of my friends ordered this and they thought it was excellent So, mixed reviews. and very loud, next time we're going to try the other Italian place on a Friday! read more

Came for a birthday dinner. Walked in to two birthday serenades. We were greeted warmly by the host and seated quickly. It's a nice dimly lit spot quiet enough for conversation but not awkwardly silent. A very good Italian place with a small menu and simple options. We enjoyed the Cacio E Pepe, Linguini Alle Vongole, and Insalata Toscana. The salad was good and refreshing, but a little overdressed. The pear and walnut add a good crunch texture which I really enjoyed. Our favorite dish of the night was the Cacio E Pepe. They used a homemade spinach tagliolini which made the dish green and looked a little off at first, but the flavor was perfect. The linguini alle vongole was also good, the flavor was more on the blander side. I would recommend if you're looking for an Italian place with simple options and homemade pastas. read more

The service was smooth and the atmosphere had a lively energy, but I have to dock a star because it was so loud inside. It got to the point where it was tough to hold a normal conversation, which took away from the overall experience. Beautiful place with a beautiful menu. I had an artichoke and avocado salad, and my husband had a delicious salad also. We both had pappardelle with mushrooms, but he stepped his up with black truffle , from the black truffle menu. Need I say more? I went back again and had a similar great experience. I have wanted that same seafood pasta special for a while (one year since I had it) and the last time I went they didn't have it listed as a special. This time it wasn't listed again so I showed my server a picture. He knew exactly what it was and said "I think we can make that for you, let me check with the chef". And boom, they made it and it was just as great as the first time. The bread service is also good. The burrata appetizer was good, not great but the prosciutto that came with it was excellent. I found myself at Toscana 49 for a work holiday dinner. I generally have low expectations when it comes to restaurants in Midtown, since many of them are a dime a dozen. However, I'm always open to trying somewhere new, and since it was a chance to also bond with my colleagues off the clock, I was really excited for this experience. I was initially surprised by the size and aesthetics of Toscana 49. Like other Midtown restaurants, I was expecting a large space, with contemporary decor. What I found was a small, narrowish restaurant that had an older aesthetic to it while still looking fresh. It was actually very cozy in there, even though it was relatively small the white walls and decor kept the space open. They also have some outdoor seating, and a large bar as soon as you walk in. The menu wasn't too crazy - it had the typical apps and entrees that I have seen at other Italian restaurants; they had a pretty good specials menu if you're looking for something slightly different. We decided to start by sharing apps: eggplant parm, artichoke salad, and mussels. These were all very good - I especially liked the mussels; I usually only eat them around the holidays so my mind and taste buds went straight to Christmas Eve. For my main I decided on pasta - the spaghetti with shrimp and arugula was speaking to me so I went with that. I thought the pasta was good, it wasn't exactly al dente, but not mushy which I was glad to see. This dish is traditionally prepared with a light tomato sauce, which usually means they add cream to it; if they did in this case, it was minimal because the dish wasn't rich at all. It was a welcome change, since some restaurants tend to make the sauce too creamy which leaves me plodding out the door at the end of the night. For dessert I had their tiramisu which was pretty good, though I would have liked a little more espresso flavor coming through. Service was good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Overall, I had a good experience at Toscana 49. I'm picky when it comes to Italian restaurants, so it's nice to know that theres a good one here in Midtown. I would return if given the opportunity. read more

This place was an absolute 5 star review for us. Party of 4 so I got to try lots of dishes. We had the Paglia e Fieno, fettuccine with lamb ragu, lasagna, and steak. Also got the caprese and Caesar salads. They start your table with some sun dried tomato and oil with fresh bread and just from that point I knew it was gonna be tops. We finished off with crème brûlée and tiramisu which were absolutely fantastic. Like some of the best I've ever had. Service was great. Venue is small but cozy. I also had the chance to try the specialty duck and salmon dishes. My favorite being the duck!
