    Cheese quesadilla
    Heidi S.

It had been a few years since I had visited Tortilla Flats, which has been a fixture in PVD since the 1970's. My friend and I happened to be in the area and since we both had fond memories of this establishment, and we had RI Food Fights Tacomania coupons, we were excited for a walk down memory lane. We ordered drinks off of the seasonal menu. I tried the autumn sangria, which was pretty weak. My friend liked her mocktail. For food, we started with chips and salsa, which were good. Our ground beef tacos and pork tacos were served in crunchy shells and were a few steps above Taco Bell. Not the best I've had, but certainly not the worst. My friend enjoyed a cheese quesadilla, and I liked my ground beef tamale which was smothered with red enchilada sauce and melted cheddar. We also ordered Mexican rice, which was pretty standard, although the rice and the salsa had a spice (cumin?) that I wasn't really fond of. The real standout of the meal for us was the pumpkin cheesecake. This was absolutely amazing and instead of splitting one slice, we probably should have each ordered our own. I would go back again just for the pumpkin cheesecake, it was that good! Service at Tortilla Flats was ok - there were a variety of servers who all seemed to be working together with taking orders & delivering food & drinks. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibe of the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon was pretty relaxed and enjoyable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Best taco RI?

I would give the service here 5 stars. The staff is wonderful and I only have good things to say. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was clean and the ambiance was pleasant too. Nothing over the top, but it's neat and clean and I like the set up.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I came here for RI food fights best taco RI and well it's just not that. The tacos, along with my cocktail, was underwhelming. I was honestly disappointed. If they can step up their game with the food and drink quality, this place has potential. The staff is so great that I hope they can bring the a game in the kitchen!

Tortilla Flats seems to have been around forever and RI Food Fights 'Taco Mania' finally brought us in. There was a 'Taco Tuesday' special so we order a few extra. The tacos were okay, but nothing special. The service was good, but felt sort of rushed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And the atmosphere was more like a local watering hole than a restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We really wanted to love this place, but all in all, it was just okay.

Steak and shrimp fajitas with uncooked bell peppers
    Kylie K.

Our waitress was great! The food was not. My steak and shrimp fajitas had random vegetables that overpowered the authenticity of the dish. The server didn't know sliced avocado was guacamole, or that flour tortillas are "the white ones". The dishes were bland, salsa was blah, and no horchata? Very disappointed except for our server!

A few friends and I got together to catch up and enjoy some food and I'm so glad we picked this spot for our meet up. I hate to admit it, but it's been years since I was last here and I had forgotten how much I love this place. Decades ago, I lived in this neighborhood and this was our go to place to hang out. Walking in all these years later, it still feels familiar. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the food is delicious, and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the whole vibe is fun.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have new owners now, so if you haven't been to visit in a while, make a point to stop by and check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Honestly? Not great. The food was not great, the drinks were not great, & [[HIGHLIGHT]]the ambience was not great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The waitstaff though? Fabulous, funny, attentive, & kind. I found the menu to be overly confusing, too. I sound like a curmudgeon here, but I just wanted a simple & comforting meal paired with simple & comforting drinks. I didn't want my chicken cooked with cinnamon, I didn't sweet potato fries inside my quesadilla, I didn't want Sprite in my margarita. It was all just doing too much. Too much & then still not good. Oh & as leftovers? Completely inedible & unsalvageable. My leftovers (after being carefully examined & all kitty toxins removed) went to my neighborhood stray cat.

Fiesta Pasta - Surprisingly Incredible! I wasn't expecting to love pasta at a Mexican restaurant, but wow--this dish blew me away. The Fiesta Pasta was flavorful, perfectly cooked, and packed with just the right mix of spices and ingredients. I hesitated at first (because, you know... pasta at a Mexican spot?), but it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the night. Highly recommend giving it a try--I'd absolutely order it again.

    Armadillo and Diablo Quesadillas
    Julie P.

Pre pandemic I lived very close to tortilla flats and frequented it. I recently went back for the first time in about a year for dinner with friends. I split the Armadillo and Diablo quesadillas with one of my friends. The Armadillo was delicious, and the Diablo was surprisingly spicy. I'm glad I only had half because I had to smoother my second fourth with sour cream to prevent a lot of discomfort. I think it would be the perfect dish for someone into spice. The restaurant is very comfortable with a mix of booths, tables, and bar seating, and our server was very nice and attentive. There's street parking, but generally I find that easy on either hope or Olney St.

Tortilla Flats of years ago is a memory. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Flats today is filthy and tired and the food is right off the Sysco truck. Nothing is fresh[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Let me repeat that - nothing is fresh. The mole in the chicken dish is made with hershey's syrup and pre-cooked frozen chicken with fake grill marks that is just reheated. Come on! Years ago we loved Tortilla Flats. Now it's just a sad reminder of what it used to be. And it's filthy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The wood panels are caked with dust and grime and the artwork hasn't been wiped down in god knows how long. Don't get me started on the cobwebs[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. We went with friends and left sad and a little grossed out. Go to Chilangos; skip The Flats.

The food was very good the Catfish was season and cooked perfect. The waitress Dawn was of great help and service we have never eaten here before. Nice cozy relaxing place to enjoy a nice filling dinner not to loud or quiet regular conversations carrying on. I will be back before the Jalapeño fish and chips special is over.

A friend and I came in and put our names on the waitlist, waited for about 45 minutes at a bar down the street, and then had some of the most fulfilling tapas ever! We got a Prosciutto & Salpicao board, the Queijo de Cabra, and Frijol Dip. I also got a nice portuguese red wine that paired well with some of the cheese we received. We sat in a very sweet and cozy nook and enjoyed every minute! I will be back when it's warm out and the front patio is open!

At their front patio, they had the World Cup game playing, but the back patio felt cozier so we opted for that. The inside though was a strong second since the lighting is very low, creating a cool and calm environment. Walking through the restaurant to get to our table made me realize that each table is unique, no two are decorated the same or have the same furniture. It was a hot day but the overhead mesh cover blocked out a lot of the sun. Our waitress made us feel very welcome from the start and told us about their drink and food specials. My friend ordered Guatemalan beer as well as a Spanish beer. For food, we ordered the plantain fries, octopus, calamari, and shrimp salad, and grilled lamp chops. The seafood salad came out first. According to the menu, it was going to be paired with cornbread. It looked like sourdough bread but had a far denser consistency. I was expecting the salad to have lots of shrimp to act as a filler but surprisingly, it was about 60% octopus, 25% calamari, 10% shrimp, and 5% onions. The seafood was very flavorful, tasted fresh, and cooked perfectly. The portion size was great for two. Next came the plantain fries, which I was least impressed with as it was essentially fried plantain chunks. I think it would have been better if they were cut into smaller pieces that can be easily dipped and consumed in one bite. The plantain was gently ripe, so just a little sweet and the dipping sauce was like a less sour sour cream. Lastly, the lamp chops came out and the presentation was wonderful. They were a bit skinnier and less tender than that I was expecting, but flavor wise they were good. We enjoyed the food, ambiance, and service here.

I was lucky to have tried North when it was open so when I saw the former chefs were preparing the meal for Chef Night, I knew I had to sign up and was so glad I did. The meal was stupendous! The first course was shrimp and corn fritters. The fritters were filled with shrimp and corn and you can visually see the shrimp and corn. It wasn't overly doughy and the sauce was delicious! Chef Andrew described the dish and he told us that the shrimp was locally sourced from Dune Brothers. The second course was noodles with tomato and pepper dashi and grilled fish. The noodles were fresh, but it started to get a little clumpy. The dashi was really flavorful. The third course was miso tres leches cake with sakura whipped cream. This course I was the most excited about and it totally blew my expectations. Chef Andrew told us that they hand picked sakura petals and made their own whipped cream. The tres leches cake was moist, dense, and airy. The dessert was definitely the star of the show. Bravo to chefs Andrew McQuesten and Stephen Sternkopf for a wonderful locally sourced meal. Jean-Marc and the other bartender were also very friendly and accommodating. They checked on all the customers throughout the night and made yummy drinks. I had the Toasted Venture.
