    Cheese quesadilla
    Heidi S.

It had been a few years since I had visited Tortilla Flats, which has been a fixture in PVD since the 1970's. My friend and I happened to be in the area and since we both had fond memories of this establishment, and we had RI Food Fights Tacomania coupons, we were excited for a walk down memory lane. We ordered drinks off of the seasonal menu. I tried the autumn sangria, which was pretty weak. My friend liked her mocktail. For food, we started with chips and salsa, which were good. Our ground beef tacos and pork tacos were served in crunchy shells and were a few steps above Taco Bell. Not the best I've had, but certainly not the worst. My friend enjoyed a cheese quesadilla, and I liked my ground beef tamale which was smothered with red enchilada sauce and melted cheddar. We also ordered Mexican rice, which was pretty standard, although the rice and the salsa had a spice (cumin?) that I wasn't really fond of. The real standout of the meal for us was the pumpkin cheesecake. This was absolutely amazing and instead of splitting one slice, we probably should have each ordered our own. I would go back again just for the pumpkin cheesecake, it was that good! Service at Tortilla Flats was ok - there were a variety of servers who all seemed to be working together with taking orders & delivering food & drinks. The vibe of the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon was pretty relaxed and enjoyable.

    Best taco RI?

I would give the service here 5 stars. The staff is wonderful and I only have good things to say. The restaurant was clean and the ambiance was pleasant too. Nothing over the top, but it's neat and clean and I like the set up. I came here for RI food fights best taco RI and well it's just not that. The tacos, along with my cocktail, was underwhelming. I was honestly disappointed. If they can step up their game with the food and drink quality, this place has potential. The staff is so great that I hope they can bring the a game in the kitchen!

We returned to this restaurant a few days ago after a gap of more than two years. The place was as lively as it ever was although less full than it is usually as the university semesters were now over. We had a Garden Quesadilla and a crispy Tostada- both large servings were quite tasty. (I was unable to finish the latter and took half of it home and had it the next day.) We shared a large Chocolate Lava Cake. All this was washed down with large and delicious (and potent) Margaritas- perhaps comparable with the best we have had in the city. Our server,Alyssa, was attentive and cheerful. The check came to a reasonable $66. We will return sooner than later.

Tortilla Flats seems to have been around forever and RI Food Fights 'Taco Mania' finally brought us in. There was a 'Taco Tuesday' special so we order a few extra. The tacos were okay, but nothing special. The service was good, but felt sort of rushed. And the atmosphere was more like a local watering hole than a restaurant. We really wanted to love this place, but all in all, it was just okay.

Steak and shrimp fajitas with uncooked bell peppers

Our waitress was great! The food was not. My steak and shrimp fajitas had random vegetables that overpowered the authenticity of the dish. The server didn't know sliced avocado was guacamole, or that flour tortillas are "the white ones". The dishes were bland, salsa was blah, and no horchata? Very disappointed except for our server!

A few friends and I got together to catch up and enjoy some food and I'm so glad we picked this spot for our meet up. I hate to admit it, but it's been years since I was last here and I had forgotten how much I love this place. Decades ago, I lived in this neighborhood and this was our go to place to hang out. Walking in all these years later, it still feels familiar. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the food is delicious, and the whole vibe is fun. They have new owners now, so if you haven't been to visit in a while, make a point to stop by and check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Honestly? Not great. The food was not great, the drinks were not great, & the ambience was not great. The waitstaff though? Fabulous, funny, attentive, & kind. I found the menu to be overly confusing, too. I sound like a curmudgeon here, but I just wanted a simple & comforting meal paired with simple & comforting drinks. I didn't want my chicken cooked with cinnamon, I didn't sweet potato fries inside my quesadilla, I didn't want Sprite in my margarita. It was all just doing too much. Too much & then still not good. Oh & as leftovers? Completely inedible & unsalvageable. My leftovers (after being carefully examined & all kitty toxins removed) went to my neighborhood stray cat.

Fiesta Pasta - Surprisingly Incredible! I wasn't expecting to love pasta at a Mexican restaurant, but wow--this dish blew me away. The Fiesta Pasta was flavorful, perfectly cooked, and packed with just the right mix of spices and ingredients. I hesitated at first (because, you know... pasta at a Mexican spot?), but it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the night. Highly recommend giving it a try--I'd absolutely order it again.

    Armadillo and Diablo Quesadillas
    Julie P.

Pre pandemic I lived very close to tortilla flats and frequented it. I recently went back for the first time in about a year for dinner with friends. I split the Armadillo and Diablo quesadillas with one of my friends. The Armadillo was delicious, and the Diablo was surprisingly spicy. I'm glad I only had half because I had to smoother my second fourth with sour cream to prevent a lot of discomfort. I think it would be the perfect dish for someone into spice. The restaurant is very comfortable with a mix of booths, tables, and bar seating, and our server was very nice and attentive. There's street parking, but generally I find that easy on either hope or Olney St.

Tortilla Flats of years ago is a memory. The Flats today is filthy and tired and the food is right off the Sysco truck. Nothing is fresh. Let me repeat that - nothing is fresh. The mole in the chicken dish is made with hershey's syrup and pre-cooked frozen chicken with fake grill marks that is just reheated. Come on! Years ago we loved Tortilla Flats. Now it's just a sad reminder of what it used to be. And it's filthy. The wood panels are caked with dust and grime and the artwork hasn't been wiped down in god knows how long. Don't get me started on the cobwebs. We went with friends and left sad and a little grossed out. Go to Chilangos; skip The Flats.

The food was very good the Catfish was season and cooked perfect. The waitress Dawn was of great help and service we have never eaten here before. Nice cozy relaxing place to enjoy a nice filling dinner not to loud or quiet regular conversations carrying on. I will be back before the Jalapeño fish and chips special is over.

We ordered drinks before the meal. I had a Vermont Red Ale for the first time which was very good and worth remembering. At this time they were serving'cocktails for a cause' in support of the Alzheimer's Association, which my other half decided to have. The drink, Fuchsia Butterflies ($15), was made solarium gin, house-made lemoncello, with a Gran Classico & Violet Rinse. It was quite excellent. I had a sip to try (I am usually not one for cocktails) and enjoyed the taste. Perhaps I will try cocktails in the future. For food we shared curry moules frites, well done, just how I like them, and salt and vinegar Wings - tasty but too salty which detracted from the dish. We ended with a good chocolate mint creme brûlée. The check came to $80 to which we added a decent tip for our friendly server, Triston. We have always enjoyed the vibe and cozy environment of this place and are sure to return.

Not the kind of place I really want to sit in and enjoy a cocktail. Dungeon like. The music is loud hip hop, not something I mind, but worth noting if thats not for you. I sat at the bar, and honestly didn't feel like it was super clean. I don't think the counter had been wiped down for a while. Staff were doing their best but seemed overwhelmed on a Saturday night. I was watching them make the cocktails and did not feel like it was very sanitary. They've got one small sink they're rinsing everything in, they were chucking stuff, literally chucking and slamming metal. They were dumping out people's drinks into the same side of the sink and then rinsing in the other side. But stuff was splashing into what should be the clean side. It's not a good setup for a cocktail bar. The cocktail menu had 8 drinks on it, 2 they were out of. Nothing had whiskey in it. I got a drink called Darjeeling something. Really didn't like it, didn't taste balanced and it looked different than someone else's who ordered the same thing, not sure if the bartender forgot an ingredient. The bartender also wasn't tasting the drinks which I usually see to ensure it was made correctly. This one had curry in it as a listed ingredient and it was just way too strong a flavor. It was a rum drink with some mezcal but it just tastes like mezcal and curry powder. The place was pretty busy but people were coming and going frequently. There's only one bathroom which really isn't enough for a bar. Seems like there's potential here but I didn't like the menu offerings and the sanitary concerns leave me with no desire to come back here.

The Frida booths in the corner are the most comfortable restaurant seats I've ever sat in in my life. I could have stayed there all night. The atmosphere overall is fantastic. The lighting is mellow, the music is at the perfect level where you can actually talk without shouting, and the bartender was well-stocked and clearly knows what they're doing. Another bonus is the view. Looking out across the street at the park lit up at night is gorgeous and really adds to the vibe of the place. The only downside is parking, which can be a little tricky depending on when you go. But honestly, once you're inside and the food hits the table, it's totally worth it. We ordered one taco each (different flavors) and neither of us could even finish it, it was that bad. Additionally, I have a severe gluten allergy and they were making an accommodation to what I ordered (grilled fish instead of fried), but initially when they brought me my taco, it had been made with fried fish and I had to tell them so that they could re-make it. I'm glad that I noticed, but because of that, I would not consider them food allergy-friendly and wouldn't risk eating there again. That being said, the waitress admitted that they were understaffed, so it's possible that we may have had a better experience on a different night.
