We have been fans of their cuisine since back when Chef Maria had El Ranch Grande near Plainfield St. This location has a limited menu selection like all Track 15 eateries. We got a rib eye taco and a Carnitas taco. Both were very tasty and well made. The spicy peppers were a bit too much for my husband, but overall, the sauce, toppings and meats were delicious. I haven't been to Dolores in a few years, although I have fond memories of eating here. I was excited to go back. I've always sat at the bar during my previous visits, but this time I was in a larger group, so we sat at a table. It was a week night, & many of the tables in the restaurant were empty. It became immediately apparent to us that we were going to be there for a long time. We had a reservation, but it took nearly 45 minutes to get drinks & another hour to get our food. We were very antsy & hungry by then. Our server would disappear for 20-30 minute intervals. They were nice, but they also seemed a bit stressed. The menu didn't include any allergy markings, so figuring out what I could eat was basically guesswork. I guessed incorrectly (the mole poblano has bread in it - I didn't know) & had to scramble to choose something else while our server was at the table. I decided on three tacos, as their tortillas are made from corn. The tacos were absolutely spectacular. The tortillas were soft and warm, the meat was tender & savory, & the overall balance of flavors was just divine. They were just packed enough to eat properly without making a mess & they left me totally satisfied. The drinks were average. There was also an extra nice touch that didn't go unnoticed by me - instead of lime wedges, they put a few itty bitty ends of lime on the plate instead. These are actually much easier to squeeze & you don't get any juice on your hands. It also implies less waste, as they probably use the rest of the limes behind the bar or in the kitchen. These dud ends would maybe be thrown away at other places, but Dolores knows that they're the best parts for hand squeezing. I would definitely return to Dolores, but I would prepare for an extra long dinner. It seems like maybe they could use an operational rehaul. read more

Local friends took us here because it was their "favorite restaurant in Providence" and did not disappoint. Some highlights: pork belly, super juicy chicken and tasty chicken skin in the chicken mole, the suiza sauce for the enchiladas, and the rice and refried beans. I did think the brisket in the brisket tacos was a little dry. We were so full by the end but couldn't stop eating. A colleague recommended this place so I met up with them for dinner last night. Overall it was a good experience. Not great but definitely well worth the visit. I will note at the outset that there is no designated parking. Therefore, be prepared to circle the block to find street parking. This proved particularly challenging due to the rain, but I eventually found a spot. We started with chips and guacamole. The presentation was u like any I have seen as they gave about 5 or 6 large round chips (as opposed to a chips basket) and an assortment of salsas of different flavors/heats and a bowl of guacamole. Haven just taken a trip to both Mexico and Panama in the past few months, I was less impressed with the guacamole - but I guess that's not a fair comparison. Compared to what I have experienced in the RI/MA area, it was certainly good enough to compare favorably and in fact better than most. The salsa was good too but I must say the taste differences between the three was negligible at best. None were truly hot/spicy. We also enjoyed a carafe of the Classico Margarita. For the extra $8 I recommend you get this instead of the house margarita because it didn't have the mixers with annoying aftertaste. It tasted natural and fresh and simply delicious! For my meal I ordered 4 tacos - brisket, pulled pork, shrimp and fried fish. Unfortunately they didn't bring me the shrimp one so I only got to try 3. The three I tried were good but again not great. The cucumbers were not tasty, but the various meats were well seasoned and impressive. Lastly, note that it has a nice look and feel but is not overly large, so it can get a bit noisy when business picks up. But that wasn't too bad, and the staff were all friendly. Dolores was pretty good! It was very busy for a Wednesday night, but we were still seated promptly. Service was only okay; we had to ask when we need more water, more napkins, and the check. The restaurant itself is super cute inside though! The food was good but not great. The queso that we started with congealed pretty quickly, which made it difficult to eat and gave it a weird texture. The huarache was our favorite dish; the pork belly on it was my favorite part of the whole meal! We arrived around 5pm without a reservation and it was pretty quiet, but by the time we left every table and every seat at the bar was occupied! Definitely a busy and popular spot, even on a Wednesday evening! The service was good and the food was pretty wonderful. We shared the tetela appetizer, which is goat cheese stuffed tortilla triangles with a spicy salsa roja and boy did it have a kick, but very tasty! We also sampled the enchiladas--one of us got half suiza and half crema chipotle and the other got the enmoladas. The enmoladas were definitely the star but both were really good. The rice and beans on the side were extremely flavorful and some of the best I've had. The food is definitely more elevated and the prices reflect that, but I would happily pay a little more for the quality that you get here. Oh yeah, and the sparkling sangria was delicious and fairly strong. One glass went a long way :) We'll happy return! read more

How do you run out of rice at a Mexican restaurant and only tell the customer when the food is brought to the table? After waiting nearly two hours for our meal, we were informed they had run out of rice!!! There was no effort to offer a substitute, discount, or any kind of compensation! It's incredibly frustrating to wait almost 2 hours to only to receive an incomplete order. If you're not fully stocked, customers should be INFORMED before placing their order so they can decide whether to stay or go elsewhere. This was a very very disappointing experience. read more

I love this restaurant. I think it's the best restaurant in Providence. The food is delicious - you can't go wrong. My particular favorite is the carne asada (marinated flank steak) with a side of mole negro. My husband loves the fish tacos and the Mole Poblano (chicken), but all the food is good. I love their mezcal margaritas (not on the menu, but no problem to get), but all the cocktails are delicious as well. The decor is simple and stylish, and the servers are all pleasant and helpful. We had reservations for 8:30 and arrived a bit early. A short wait for our table... This place is small and loud. It was difficult to have a conversation and our table was cramped. The decorations were nice. Our server had zero personality and I felt like she was annoyed we were there. The pros here is you felt like you were eating in someone's home. Food was authentic - albeit too spicy for my taste even the guac left my tongue burning, but I know I am the minority here. My two children enjoyed the food. We went here to celebrate my daughters 21st birthday- had to remind the server even though it was on our reservation - they served her flan with a candle and sang happy birthday- to note the desert is not complimentary. And speaking of the flan - none of us like traditional flan and almost didn't try it. It was actually very good in a raspberry sauce and a nice caramel finish . The drinks left me puzzled . Margarita and sangria were served in short whisky glasses? They were good but small. If you want authentic this is the place to go. Delicious food; definitely the best Mexican food I have had in quite a while. Cute location in Fox Point. They do not skimp on the tequila in the drinks or the jalapeños in the tacos. Service was a little slow but that gave my friend and me more time to chat and we were not in a hurry. My favorite app was the one with the tortillas stuffed with goat cheese. The shrimp and fish tacos were also great. Clean interior and bathrooms. My main complaint here is that it is super LOUD. The restaurant and the bar were packed and the acoustics here seem to amplify the noise. I actually felt like I was losing my voice after the meal due to having to speak at such a high volume just to chat with my friend. I'd love to come back here because the food was amazing but may choose a less busy night or time of day. (We were here on a Thursday). They also have a small amount of outdoor seating which might be quieter and more enjoyable, although it's basically on the sidewalk, not an enclosed area. read more

Second time here and I'm so glad I came back! My first experience was fine, but just that. Service had been slow, but the food was good. This time everything was perfect. The atmosphere is great. Simple, clean, but those pendant lights?! Service was wonderful. Super friendly and attentive which is what really made this visit SO much better! Sadly I don't recall our servers name but they did a wonderful job. We had three appetizers and two entrees for 3 people and believe me, it was more than enough. The octopus was out of this world. For sure the stand out of the two entrees and I was personally thrilled as they were out of it the first time. Everything was absolutely delicious and distinct in flavor. You can tell it's all homemade, and made with a love for fresh delicious food. The huarache was the fan favorite of the entradas. Absolutely delicious!! What I love is that Dolores is far from your "typical" Mexican restaurant and quite frankly, so much better. My siesta cocktail was so good I ordered two. Would absolutely be back, and cannot wait to try them out for brunch some Sunday. On the brighter side, the cocktails were spot-on. Service, unfortunately, was the weakest point of the evening. Despite the restaurant's small and cozy layout, we waited 26 minutes before our drink order was even taken. A second drink order took another 10-15 minutes to arrive. While the food pacing itself was well-executed and never felt rushed, the inattentiveness on the service side detracted from the overall experience. With such a compact dining room, it was surprising that the staff seemed overwhelmed or inattentive. There's no question that Dolores has great potential--the foundation is there, from heritage-driven flavors to quality ingredients and a thoughtfully designed space. A few adjustments to service consistency and dish execution would take it to the next level. Would I return? We have been meaning to dine here and finally made it a week ago having reserved a table for two. (It's in our neighborhood and opposite one of our favorite Providence restaurants.) The place was better designed and more modern (unlike places trying to be "ethnic") than I had imagined. The restaurant was quite full and noisy, but allowed for conversation. The staff bustled around and our server was lively and efficient. After ordering the almost mandatory Tequilas we decided on the food which we shared: Queso Fundido, three different Tacos - shrimp, carnitas and brisket - and a Chile Relleno. All delicious but too much and we had to take some of it home. (There was no room for dessert!) It all came to about $90 - worth it. It deserves 4 1/2 stars which one cannot give on Yelp. I visited Dolores for the first time on a Monday evening around 5:45pm with a party of 3. The hostess informed me that there were no tables available till 9:00pm, but we could sit at the bar if we liked. Thankfully, the bar had 3 open seats. The bar had about 10 seats in total; give or take. I had heard about Dolores before, but when I saw chef Maria Meza of Dolores was acknowledged as a 2024 James Beard Foundation Awards finalist for Best Chef: Northeast, I knew I had to come and visit. The restaurant has a lot of natural lighting come through the windows and all the tables were occupied. I had a glass of the Naveran Brut Cava after I found out they no longer had Sangria available. We started with the Guacamole w/ heirloom corn tostadas. The guacamole was creamy and fresh and the tostadas were crispy. I really enjoyed breaking the tostadas and dipping it into the guacamole. After we put in our entrees orders, the bartender informed us that the kitchen was making more Mole Pistachio and it might take a while. We had the option to change for a different mole but then after he came back and told us it'll be ready by the time our party finished the Insalada Mariscos. The Mole Pistachio had Octopus cooked over live fire served on a pistachio mole verde, with a chorizo and potato gordita. The octopus was tender and flavored well. The pistachio mole verde had great flavor as well and great to mix in the rice and beans. We shared a plate of rice and beans that accompanied our meals. The others in my party had the Insalada Mariscos which had Octopus, calamari, shrimp, lime, cilantro, onion, spices and the Enmolada, which had 3 tortillas filled with chicken topped with, Maria's famous Mole Poblano, of dried chiles, nuts, spices, cacao, fruits. onions and queso fresco. We all enjoyed our food and were stuffed. The bartenders serving us were friendly and attentive. I'll definitely come back to Dolores when I am craving some Mexican food and will make a reservation to get a table next time. read more

Great food and adorable vibes. This spot is on the Wickenden-adjacent end of Hope St and really gives off trendy, cute, casual energy. Waitstaff is incredibly kind as well. I ordered a mezcal margarita and split some guacamole with my friend. The margarita was delicious (with a notably strong pour!) and the guac was alright. I will be honest, I've had better guac however the rest of the food made up for this. I ordered a fish taco (battered haddock, served with chipotle mayo and cabbage). This was one of the better fish tacos I've had. It was served on a blue corn tortilla, which in my opinion is how all tacos should be served! My friend and I split the mole pistachio which was GREAT. This was a charred octopus on mole verde sauce. The sauce was so flavorful and rich. As a pistachio lover girl and seafood enthusiast, this was a creative standout dish that absolutely hit. Anyways, I'd go back to Dolores in a heartbeat. Great place for food and bites with friends on a weekend. We ordered two things at one time - queso fundido and the table tacos - queso fundido came out at 8:30, an hour later, and tacos at exactly 9, over an hour after we'd ordered and 1.5 hours since we got here. We were never checked on besides when our server asked if we wanted to put in food and we already did so that makes me think we were forgotten. It is probably the best taco experience in New England! You can order a sharing style taco plate. There are a lot of options of different meats. The fish and shrimp are amazing. Love the carnitas and beef. Great margaritas, if you are going to order more than two I recommend the big jar thing (I forgot what it called but you'll know what I mean when you see the menu). This restaurant came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The food gave me flashbacks to homemade Mexican food from South Texas and New Mexico, though the specific Southern Mexican cuisine that is offered does vary slightly from those meals. I was greeted by very friendly staff who made sure that service was smooth and accommodating with an obvious level of consideration for the type of guest that I was that night (one that was there to take my time and decompress from a long day at work). The setting is casual yet intimate. The selection of tequila is first class, and the cocktails I tried were all made with fresh ingredients and built to taste amazing. If you are in the mood for elevated Mexican cuisine paired with well-executed cocktails and top-level service, Dolores is a must-visit. The woman who started it all, Maria, still makes food there, grinds fresh corn for tortillas, and is the curator of the food and menu. My husband and I came for dinner on what seemed like a slow Saturday night. They had a table available within 10 minutes of our arrival but the service was really slow. It took us another 10 minutes to get water and to be greeted by our waitress. The group that arrived after us received their water and met their waiter before us. Aside from the service the food was delicious. There was such flavor and it tasted like true authentic Mexican food, not like of the gentrified Mexican food that some places have. I really enjoyed the Huarache it had a great kick to it. The Mole Pistachio was so good! The octopus was cooked very well and it had so much flavor within the Kole. So much potential to be "excellent". We encountered some "areas of improvement" on our first visit. Saw it mentioned in a recent RI Monthly that this was the favorite of several RI chefs. Reservations a must on the weekend. Packed. Very loud. Bartender was great and recommend his mezcal Negra Paloma ($15 - not the usual $18 - $20 plus you are seeing throughout RI). However as this is an Oaxaca-rooted spot where mezcal is king, why only one mezcal drink on the cocktail menu? We had two issues - service (not the wait staff who however could have been more informative) - the kitchen and the incessant LOUD loop of a drum track. I got a headache after an hour; I assume the employees have managed to tune it out. Oh - and 2 items on their we assume daily-printed menu were not available. Food was very good and they are making Mexican (not TexMex) dishes you probably cannot find elsewhere. Starters were the scallops ceviche ($18) and "salsa and tostados" (bargain at $6 but I would gladly pay a few more $s to get beyond the minuscule servings of 2 very good salsas). Winning entrees were Costillas en Mole Pasilla ($25) and carne asada ($28) that were served with rice and outstanding black beans. Once again, the pico de gallo was in the smallest serving. Don't know if it was our table only. One entrée arrived 10 minutes after the first. Entrees were 20 plus minutes later. Only when we tracked down another server (as our server never quite made it to our table), did we find out "only a few more minutes..." So, we'll be back and hope they can find some background music that changes, salsa and pico de gallo cups a bit bigger, and the kitchen firing smoothly. Damages with 2 cocktails and tip were $150 for two. We got there and it wasn't too busy, and they sat us quickly but it took 20-25 minutes before anyone came to ask us for drinks and food. This unfortunately became a trend, with our server going missing for long periods of time. We waited another 20-25 minutes between finishing our app and getting our entree. The queso was great though, and the mole enchiladas were pretty tasty too. My partner got the short ribs which were great, but she said the mole was too bitter for her.
