I stopped but this place spontaneously for a late lunch/early dinner since they open at 4 pm on Saturdays. I was impressed by the inside, both by the decor and the layout of their tables as well as the windows to let in natural sunlight. Although we did not have reservations, they were able to accommodate us which was kind. However, I would recommend making a reservation because you might not get this lucky all the time. As an appetizer, we had the Ensalada de mariscos (seafood salad) which was delicious. It was a good serving size (about 1-1.5 cups) and came with three crispy tortillas. I loved the jalapeño as it gave it a perfect kick. I also loved that it had a variety of seafood (hence the name) including octopus, calamari, shrimp. Although it had a lot of onion, it did not overpower and instead provided a crunchy texture. It was perfectly sour and salty. We couldn't decide on which tacos to get so we had one of each. From favorite to least favorite, I think I'd rate them as follows: carnitas, Baja fish, lengua, brisket, fried shrimp. All of the tacos had a soft corn tortillas and a generous amount of protein. I liked the carnitas most because the meat was flavorful and tender. The Baja fish was also good because of the creamy sauce it had, with the well seasoned fish, and crunchy cabbage. The I think the reason I didn't like the fried shrimp as much was because the sauce on top was a bit bland--maybe something more powerful in flavor that wouldn't mess with the crunchiness of the shrimp would have helped. Our server was great. He took good care of us. There were some big plates and other apps that caught my attention but I was satisfied with trying their tacos. Parking might be difficult depending on the day since they're only street parking but it's doable. read more

Came in after reading that the owner was a Jame Beard finalist. Had dinner with a girl friend. Very cozy albeit a bit loud. I found the queso to be a bit dense, very hard to dip, was more like a solid lump of cheese, but tasty. The cactus was well prepared and tender but lacked seasoning. The chicken mole was outstanding. Flavorful and light sauce with complex flavors. Was a little dissapointed, but may return for another visit. read more

Dolores is my favorite spot in Providence for contemporary Mexican food. Let's start with the cocktails. I love a very, very spicy drink and oftentimes when I'm out and request an extra spicy margarita, I'm given a marg with one or two unmuddled jalapeno slices floating on the top. Not here. Every time I've ordered a very spicy mezcal margarita, I'm given a seriously hot, lip-numbing drink. Which I happen to love. Everything I've had to eat here has been fantastic. Pro tip: avoid the guacamole, which you can get anywhere and, at $14, it's not the best investment here. Instead, order the cebiche negro. I love a raw scallop and with tomato, cucumber, and charred habanero, this dish is a light and refreshing start to the meal. The ensalada mariscos is equally delicious and bright. The tacos can be ordered a la carte, which gives you the opportunity to play around and taste test a few. The baja fish is my personal favorite. The batter on the haddock is light and flaky and the chipotle mayo is to die for. The star of the show, though, is the mole pistachio. The octopus is grilled to perfection and practically melts in your mouth. And the pistachio mole is beyond delicious. The dish comes with a chorizo and potato gordita but because I don't eat pork, the restaurant is always able to accomodate and substitute a black bean gordita. The interior space is really pretty but be mindful, sound echoes in this open space and it can get extremely loud during the dinnertime rush. If you have the option to eat outdoors and it's a beautiful day, do it. But at its noisiest, Dolores is still an excellent restaurant. read more

Check your takeout. We went there for brunch on Sunday, and I had the chicken pozole soup. It was so good that we ordered 2 to go to have for lunch on Monday. Unfortunately, the to-go pozoles were not the same as the ones in the restaurant--just chicken broth and tons of hominy, but no chicken, radishes, avocado, or onions (which were in the restaurant version). I don't think I've had better Mexican food in my life. The mole poblano is a destination dish. It was so outrageously deep, rich, earthy, and bitter, while having a pleasant background heat. I've never had a "mole" like this before, which is most likely due to the fact that this spot is uber authentic and everywhere else I've been simply is not. Its rare that I taste something "new" or "different" on my palette, something that I can't place or compare to - but this dish does exactly that. Everything else I tasted was also stellar, but the other massive hit at the table was the nopales. The balance of the dish was downright phenomenal - it was acidic, salty, and punchy. Such a great dish to go along side some of the heavier, richer, deeper options. The drinks are fresh and carefully crafted to boot. Similar to others, the service was a bit slow, but it was very friendly. Its truly a staffing thing, as there were only 2 people working the entire place, and that said, those two women were busting their butts. Similar to other reviews here. Really great food, but the experience is marred by the sub-par service. Pros: Drinks were good. Specially drinks with mezcal vs. tequila definitely added a smoky flavor. Sangria also good. Waitress was very knowledgeable and informative. Food was very good...tasty and plentiful. Mole sauce is spectacular. Cons: No hostess stand. We walked in and just sort of looked around. Flagged down a busboy and he told us to stand in the hallway and wait...table would be ready in a few minutes. someone came over and poured water but then we waited ten minutes for anyone to come over to take a drink order. After that waitress informs Ed us of all the things they were out of on the menu. keep in mind that the menu is not huge and I would expect them to have everything at 6:30 on a Saturday night. No guacamole! How does a Mexican restaurant run out of avocados? Three entrees not available. Not sure if there were any specials, but none were offered. Ordered appetizers and they came out before we got our drinks (about 20 mins). After that, no one checked back on us after dropping the entrees. Would have liked another drink. Overall, I don't think we'll be back. Dolores is not cheap and I wish the service kept up with the quality of the food. read more

I came in with high expectations since we have heard nothing but good things. The food was good about 7.5/10, drinks were 9/10, but the service was awful. Our reservation was at 7 and we didn't leave until 10 PM. Drinks were forgotten, more water was never brought over, entrees took over 1.5 hours to receive, and waitress never once apologized or gave us a status update. When delivering the bill she was also extremely rude (most likely frustrated with the kitchen). The above average dishes and excellent drinks are giving this a 3/5. This was our first time here. It has been on my list for a while, as I love authentic Mole. Our meal and service were outstanding. Our bartender Jorjes, ( not sure of spelling) was attentive and very informative. We had the margaritas, so good! We started with the salsa and tostadas. All 3 salsas were excellent with varying degrees of heat. We grow our own peppers and make and can salsa, and we were impressed. The chips are made from corn they import from Oaxaca. Then we had another app. Of a soft blue corn tortilla stuffed with goat cheese, with serranno peppers, crema and something else. So delicious. For entrees, i had the poblamo mole, so perfect! My husband had a fish taco, a shrimp taco, and sides of black beans and rice. He said best tacos ever. Lastly the decor is beautiful, bright, and welcoming. Fresh flowers everywhere. A nice night out, though definitely room for improvement! Take this with a grain of salt as we are living through complicated times were labor isn't quite where it was 2 years ago. We started our meal with margaritas - well made and very tasty! - paired with Mexican cokes. For an appetizer, we started with the queso fondito. Unfortunately, it was served with only a few soft corn tortillas. We asked for 'tostadas' hoping for more umph to dip with, though the tostadas were just griddled tortillas with no added salt. The dip was great, but we missed the chips. Our main courses were the carne asada and the steak mole. Both were well cooked, though the carne asada was under salted, lacked an acid like lime juice, and was a bit cold when it arrived. We did wait quite a bit between courses, so we wondered if the carne finished first and sat out while they prepared the mole. The mole was fantastic and paired beautifully with the beef! Sad I wasn't able to give it a 5 star. Hers why....... We got seated in the right side as soon as you walk in and it's extremely dark to the point I can't see my food. Unbelievable they charged 20% automatically towards tip instead of having a space for me to put how much. The worst part was the amount of time the food took, 43 minutes for 2 dishes The bathrooms are extremely clean and spacious! However, the cacophonous din in this restaurant is over the top intolerable so unless you're prepared to shout to be heard and likewise repeat yourself so that you can attempt a conversation during your meal--forget it. First we were fortunate to get a table for 5 on a Saturday without a reservation. Score! Now the service was super friendly and efficient. We started with tostadas with multiple salsas and guacamole and Tetela- goat cheese filled tortillas Excellent! Since I've telling all the Mole at Dolores is as good as you will find anywhere, including in Oaxaca Mexico, where I've had the good fortune of traveling. I ordered the Mole Negro- ribeye with veggies and the most delicious and sublime mole I've ever had. Out of this world good! Others had the Mole Poblano which is a brown mole sauce with chicken. We shared and all agreed that they are both best in class mole. To complete the experience Doña Maria Meza the chef stopped by to check in on us! Truly an honor to meet this master chef! We were a party of 2 and the server charged us 20% in tip without telling us, although they did NOT have any caveat about this on the menu, and she had the nerves to say it's normal for them to charge tip for a party of 2. Two?? Never heard of this?? She was also super grumpy from the jump, no smiles, and when we asked her for recommendation, she just said "this one is good" without explaining anything. A new Quaint little spot nestled in the East Side of Providence, Dolores is a authentic Mexican Restaurant with flair. We had a Mexican Beer and a Strong Margherita followed by Carnitas Tacos. The meat was flavorful and the drinks were good. The staff was friendly and the newly designed interior was really a pleasant place to spend some time for dinner. I was really excited to go here. The service was ok, and the food came out in an appropriate time, but I'm sorry, but most of my food was woefully under seasoned. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce and the chicken was completely flavorless. The mole was ok, but I can't say it feels authentic when seasoning was nowhere to be found. I also did not like that the waiter took our rice and beans and never offered or asked if we wanted to take it with us. It was a full plate of food that I guess went straight into the trash. I will say my friend poblano pepper dish was the best dish of the night, but it also was the only flavored dish of the night. I'm no expert on Mexican food so maybe it was supposed to be prepared that way. But man. Unseasoned food is unseasoned food, and I just don't see how that is desirable for anyone. I'd still come back here though, and I would want to try out some of the dishes they were out of or my friends dish which was very good. I wish I had the experience here so many have had. read more

I do miss when the owners ran El Rancho Grande -- a more down to earth, affordable, traditional Mexican place in Olneyville -- that has since closed. This was literally one of the best meals we have had in years. The regional specialties showcase the delicate combinations of ingredients the way the best French restaurants do. The mole poblano was extraordinary - I could have licked the plate clean. The flavors were deep and rich and subtle, and perfectly balanced. Listen, I've lived in LA for most of my life and a small portion of it in Mexico City. The food at Dolores is not only comparable but outshines some of the food I've had in the other cities in some aspects. The tortillas were fresh and perfectly cooked, the mole was a perfect blend of spicy and sweet, and the queso fundido absolutely beautiful. Now, that's just the food. The drinks were complex, beautifully made, and delicious. One of the best restaurants in Providence! The staff is also very kind and responsive. I can't wait for my next visit! read more

The service at brunch was truly appalling. We had a reservation for a large party, but no one sat us until nearly 20 minutes after our reservation time. We just had to stand and wait. Then, we finally sit down and the server doesn't greet us for another 20 minutes. The restaurant was half empty. When she does greet us and takes our food and drink order, she doesn't return for another 30 mins with our coffees. At this point, an hour and a half into our reservation, our food comes. Two out of seven meals were wrong orders, and she failed to bring salt and hot sauce despite multiple requests until we were nearly done with the meal. Never refilled water, never checked in on us. The food was cold. I've been here many times before, but never for brunch. It is clear they are severely understaffed and mismanaged. Super disappointing. The food was alright, underwhelming and certainly made worse by the ineffective service. I've been a waitress for years and I never write bad reviews, but it was SO shockingly bad, they need better management. read more

The long awaited opening of Maria and Joaquin Meza's new restaurant on the East Side of Providence has met with a mixed response from the band here on Yelp!, so I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. It isn't quite what I expected. There is a beautiful bar, absolutely packed to the gills with people waiting to be seated inside (a familiar refrain for those acquainted with the ERG). The dining room, clean and bright, with stark white walls and euro cafe styled furnishings. But this is no cafe, though you can get a Hot Chocolate if you like. The dishes here are single tacos, made with artisanal grains and modern cuisine styled fillings; and a myriad of moles, which happen to be a Meza family specialty. Some of the guests at my table were disappointed. Each had ordered dishes similar to ones from the old El Rancho, but not nearly done as well. Tacos Pibil for one and Tacos Carnitas to share for the other, which took three attempts to get served with sauces and sides. But my dinner, it was divine. To start with a flute of Mezcal, they serve the neat orders of mezcal in champagne flutes, one of the finest I ever have had. Beautiful floral, soft and sweet, with a peppery smoke that lingered in the mouth. Tacos Octopus Pastor were the perfect pair, the soft and lovely octopus dice, with raw white onion and ripe sweet pineapple, a touch more heat would have been welcome, but the dish was expertly prepared. The Tacos Pescado was Tater-Tot crisp, with a fillet of flakey white fish piping hot inside. Every bit as good as if it were served from a West Coast beach shack. In conclusion, I count as a fan, even though I get that everyone might not. read more

I love this place! I've been there for dinner and brunch. It's really cute and the decors is nice. The service is friendly and attentive. The cocktails are fun and great, the food is fresh, creative, and so delicious. They do seem to run out of a lot of things, but I don't really mind that because it's a sign that they keep their ingredients fresh. We love you guys but we have to be honest... We came for an early dinner yesterday at 4:30. Interior and decor is awesome! Food was delicious as always but portions and prices are off. The service as always was terrible...we kind of expected this considering the service at ERG was extremely slow as well..... but we were really hoping it would be different due to the "fine dining" prices and portions. The other thing that is well worth mentioning. The restaurant was about 60% full and it was extremely loud. If you are at all sensitive to noise don't go when it's busy. We were about half way through our dinner and I ordered another drink...it took 30min for drink...we were done and ready for the check so we put the drink in a to-go cup...Gotta think on the fly. read more

It was on a Saturday afternoon and the food took forever, came out in the wrong order, forgot a few dishes, had to reorder a few beverages because they forgot. Had two servers, a woman and the guy at the bar. They were both nice but did the bare minimum, and to top it off when I ordered dessert for my grandma with a candle I was told it was a chocolate tres leches and got a vanilla tres leches. I really respect what they do here and had an amazing experience the first time but this was just a really bad day, and unfortunately a day that was supposed to be special for the family. read more

All that we ordered was very good: the mole poblano offered complex flavors and tender chicken; the carnitas and brisket tacos were fat with ingredients. The staff was attentive. But we left as soon as we could because the noise level rose to over 80 decibels (Apple watch) which made it impossible to converse as well as dangerous to one's hearing. The waitstaff could develop hearing loss at such levels. Sound deadening needs to be installed in this restaurant before we will return. read more

Run.. run there right now! We have been waiting to try Dolores for over a year and it did not disappoint. While everything was unbelievably delicious, do yourself a favor and get the Huarache Pork Bell app and the Fish Tacos. I could eat both of them all night long. The beverages were a tad sweet... not in a bad way, just in a way that will probably to lead to a hangover if you have too many. The space is well appointed, the seats are comfortable, the tables are spaced well, and the drum lights are out of this world gorgeous! The team that designed this place deserve an A+.
