As it was a Saturday, no tables were available from reservations but we were able to grab a seat at the bar. The space is open, dark. A blend of Mexican homage and industrial brick. An open kitchen gives you the chance to watch your meal be prepared in full view. Our bartender, Greer was super friendly and balanced attentiveness. She is detail oriented and was very accommodating. She quickly took care of our drinks and got our food order in ASAP. They offered a limited menu for TacoMania and I chose the carne option. It came out in a crunchy blue corn tortilla. After a squeeze of lime, I dug in. The crunch was everything you wanted it to be and more. The beef with queso fundido made this a slight messy but overall delicious taco. We got the cornbread souffle to share and it was outstanding. The souffle itself was savory and very corn forward, as opposed to the sweeter cornbread you see in the south. They add a touch of something sweet to balance it out. My friend had the shrimp chimichirri tacos and they said they were a 10/10. So glad to find another tasty spot in the TacoMania trail! read more

I have mixed feelings about Diego's. It wasn't bad but wasn't knock your socks off. Came for RI food fights and had the hard shell ground beef tacos. The meat was juicy and flavorful, but the taco shells did not hold up well. As soon as you took one bite the whole taco would fall apart. The queso was also a bit heavy. I live in Los Angeles for part of the year, so know that I am certainly not leaving 4 stars in comparison to LA Mexican food. Sorry, but even a taco truck in a Hoke Depot parking lot in LA is going to beat any New England Mexican restaurant. My 4 stars are about the overall experience and not actually saying this is 'authentic' in any way, shape or form. The hipster vibe here is strong and it looks like it could be a restaurant inside a Kimpton Hotel, or a modern chain hotel. It's dark-ish ... the skull theme is on overload ... the music that blasts is Sum-41 and vintage 90's punk music. There are lots of colors, marionette dolls in shadowboxes (covered in icky dust) and the host walks around with a Polaroid camera to put your photo on the wall, if you are good-looking. A little over the top on everything trendy ... but stops just before 'cloying'. Before we talk about the food, the prices must be addressed. These days, everything is so out of control I am never sure what is actually higher than normal. These prices seem to be a mixture. A street taco plate is $15, which seems okay ... the Bierra Taco plate is $25 ... a bit steep. Appetizers and drinks are what is going to sting here ... figure on $11 - $15 for an average mixed drink. $7 - $9 for most beers on draft, or in cans. (An ice cold can of Tecate is $5, which is on point.) Guacamole ... plan on taking out a mortgage for. The food was good. It wasn't anything like the Mexican food I have grown used to in LA. Things seemed fresh and tasty ... we had a basket of fried mushrooms, which were not seasoned and rather bland. The ranch-esque dipping sauce saved them. I had Bierras tacos. They were good ... 3 greasy, fried tacos with a slow-simmered beef filling. They oddly tasted a bit like a larger version of Trader Joe's mini-beef tacos. Certainly not health food ... certainly the perfect greasy drunk food. A little side of guacamole and sour cream would have been welcome. The side of bland, dry Mexican rice and bland refried black beans was terrible. The shrimp bowl special was good. 'Nothing special ... but not bad' is how it was described by the person who got it. The ingredients seemed fresh but just didn't really come together. It didn't seem like anything that Chipotle couldn't top. Overall, two entrees, one appetizer and one beer was $70. A bit high for Mexican food, based on what I am used to and we probably wouldn't come often as if we are going to drop darn near $100, there are better ways to do it. The industrial hipster decor is cool enough that it's fun to look around. I haven't found a single Mexican restaurant to write home about in Providence ... so this one is as good as any of the others you'll visit. I have been to Diego's a number of times, and rarely been disappointed. They do a moderate amount of menu rotation, but my favorite entree has been the fried chicken. About a year ago we also had a group of 11 for my boyfriend's birthday party on the porch and they did a great job with it. It was decorated and we were able to put together a pre fix menu. They generally have indoor and outdoor seating and the indoor ambiance is very fun. The music is a little load for some (like my parents), and the decor is multi colored skull themed. They have a large seating area in the back as well, and while it can accommodate larger groups at long tables, it does feel a little disconnected from the rest of the restaurant. Depending on what you're going for that can be good or bad. Most recently I got a drink with my friend at the bar. I don't drink a lot of alcohol, but the Mango Tango mocktail I got was great. People who are fairly interested in tequila have also given their drink menu very positive reviews. read more

FOOD/DRINKS: Ordered the White Peach Sangria pitcher which serves around four glasses. Delicious. Loved it. For our appetizer, we ordered the fried calamari which was actually kind of spicy but really good. The main entrees I was disappointed in, especially in portion size. Two tacos for $16 .. barely kept me full. The taco fillings also fell out really easily. Wasn't impressed. For dessert, my friend and I shared a tres leches cake slice which was pretty good too. Not too soggy but just enough flavor. DECOR: The restaurant was dimmed with just enough light for each table. The decorations were cool, a vibe. I liked the open kitchen concept and the center bar. A good place to grab a drink or two with friends. There is also a fairly decent-sized lounge area to sit in while waiting for a table. SERVICE: It was a little busy when we arrived but we got seated within ten to fifteen minutes. Our hostess and server were really friendly. I appreciated it. Date night with my boyfriend tonight, we decided to try out a New Mexican place we hadn't yet. I am a huge fan of both Mexican and Tex-mex food, and always curious for new spots. The waiter seated us relatively quickly, although oddly slow for the fact only two or three tables in the whole place were filled. We ordered drinks after about a six or seven minute wait for our initial milk jar of water, my partner got a margarita and myself a vodka martini. Drinks were decent. As for food, we ordered the nachos and fajitas. The chicken tinga on the nachos was decent, the guacamole and aioli as well but I did notice that the chips were definitely not made in house, due to their thinness and brittle breaking apart. My boyfriend's fajita had barely any meat on it, despite him paying an extra eight dollars for steak. When our bill came, after gratuity, the total was 104 dollars. Absolutely preposterous for a mid, gentrified Tex mex millennial trust fund baby owned dive spot whose only unique factor is the over abundance of skull memorabilia and imagery all over the place. Do better. I can get much better food at far lower prices anywhere else in this city. This restaurant will only be appreciated by people who have never had to worry about money. read more

girlfriend and i decided to give diego's a go based upon a friends recommendation. sadly, it missed most marks. Richard L, our server, from the beginning seemed to fumble. Took about 20 min for him to come over, clear plates but never bring water for our empty cups. we ordered cocktails, the death proof is what i chose and it was the best part of the meal, and my gf said the same about her drink. after our drinks were brought out , we ordered food and and asked politely if water could be brought to the table....once again Rich seemed to forget all about that. the shrimp empanadas finally arrive and at this point he finally says how he forgot to bring us waters. no big deal , i resume and ask about the margarita specials that i read go on during trivia , which we were present for . Condescendingly so, he calls it the "el cheapo" which i personally had to ask if he was being funny or was it the actual name and i guess the owners own tone death attitudes may find that funny?! because surely enough that's what they label it as on the menu ....not sure...regardless he did not know the flavors and made me feel stupid for even considering , i still ordered one to kind of shove it up his you know what. i got the burrito with beef birria and my girl got fajitas with the chipotle chicken. food was overly salty , beef birria looked as dry as dog food and served cold...no love or passion to this food , on top of super small portions for the price. all in all, the place was cute, the drinks were good but at the price of everything, you'd expect them to be, but sadly the service and the food all left a lot more to be desired. spent 100 dollars for two people and left quite underwhelmed. with a few tweaks , and a little more love and culture into the food and how it all is presented , it would and could make a night and day difference. best of luck but not sure if i'd return with so many more amazing options in our little city of providence read more

It's a great new spot that suddenly just appeared mid-COVID. Defunct storefront (and good place to take shelter in the rain) to patio seating with people enjoying outdoor dining, seemingly overnight. I thought it was a bit pricy but definitely food made well. We ordered a special guac of the day, mango and mint, which I would have never gotten except my friend wanted it. I was pleasantly surprised! I hate cilantro, and if it was included it was too minor to notice. My advice to all restaurants is to make a version of salsa/guac without cilantro. PLEASE. SOME OF US CANNOT HELP HATING IT. I guess I should be upfront and say that I don't frequent Mexican food restaurants in RI because I don't like cilantro. Or tequila. BUT I was intrigued by the cocktail menu (I do, strangely enough, like mezcal if done right) and the sangrias were great--we got one of each, the white peach and red spiced. I liked the spice. For food we shared mini quesadillas and fish tacos. Growing up in New Mexico, I would never eat a fish taco, so here...you know, near water, I'm into it, and these were delicious. I liked the sauce, it complemented the flavors well. We definitely could have used more napkins and our servers disappeared for a while, so beware it's messy. Get extra napkins up front :) Quesadillas: also a fan. For dessert my friend wanted the churros. I can't really comment on this (they might be five out of five star churros) because I don't really like churros. But the order comes with several small ones, rather than one giant one, and two dipping sauces: cinnamon sugar and chocolate ganache. I had hoped the chocolate would have been dark chocolate (it tasted milky), but overall it was a good dessert to share. If they added fried ice cream to the menu, I would love to try it. Stopped for dinner after porch fest with friends (party of 4). Was a miss for us. Enjoyed the outdoor seating and the guacamole appetizer was very tasty. But 2 of us ordered upgrade margaritas and they tasted watered down, possibly no tequila? 2 other drinks served to the table clearly did have alcohol so I drank most of mine thinking maybe it was just a smooth drink. Waitress was gone for long periods of time. By the time she returned I was certain there was no alcohol in the drinks so we let her know. They comp'd 2 shots of tequila but most of our drinks were already consumed so we were left with a shot, not exactly what we ordered. As mentioned, the waitress was gone for long periods of time and when our food eventually arrived, all 4 dishes were cold. Clearly they had been sitting ready for delivery for a long time. No one came back to ask how they were until it was time to leave. $50 per person for cold tacos and watered down drinks left us feeling like we won't be back. read more

First, the atmosphere is really nice. They have a heated outdoor patio which is great for those cold days. I came to try them out because it was PVD Vegan Week. They had a three course vegan menu which was lovely. I started off with the shishito peppers. To my surprise they were not spicy and not flavorful. The sauce they had drizzled on was delicious so that was my only way to enjoy the peppers for me. I love spicy food so maybe that's why I was disappointed. However if you are not into spicy food and want to try these peppers, go for it. My next item in my order was the vegan burrito. This is definitely filling but again not spicy and missing some Mexican flare. I was hopping it had more mushrooms inside but my burrito was filled with rice and guacamole. The last food item in my dinner was the dessert and this was probably my best item. The chocolate coconut mousse was delicious. I only wish it was bigger. I also had the cider sangria which may be seasonal and that was more cider than sangria. Our waitress was attentive and lovely so that was a plus. Just left from there. VERY UNDERWHELMING! We started off with some "Ultimate" margaritas. I had the blood orange with a sugar rim and my partner had the passion fruit with a salt rim. Both were sour, not enough agave. Mine also tasted salty for some odd reason. We ordered chicken fajitas. We expected a sizzling cast iron dish but it came on a regular plate. I thoroughly enjoy the food and the outdoor patio is great. The rotating specials are always fun to try and my husband says they have a good bar menu. We both agree the music is too loud for a restaurant for our taste so we eat outside; it's just not fun to have to raise your voice over music over a nice dinner. That's just my opinion! It's a little on the pricey side for Mexican food but it's very well done and we do save it for a special night out. Oh I want to like Diego's but I just can't get over our visit yesterday. We arrived for lunch (two adults and a 15 year old) and seated nicely. We were presented with menus, special menus and drink menus. My husband ordered a bottled beer off the list but the waitress said they were out. Oh well no big deal. He ordered something else. Ok now food! We were all ready and we ordered. My husband went to order the smash burger tacos...nope out again. Ok how about a ground beef quesadilla? Nope, no ground beef in the restaurant. Why would you not notify on the menu or just verbally the items you are out of? It's a whole protein group! . Ok fine he ordered the birria tacos. My daughter ordered a crispy chicken wrap and I butternut squash soup. Food came and we were hungry!! The waitress put our plates down and in front of my daughter looked like a pile of nachos with a fried egg on it? I said that is not what she ordered. The waitress laughed and said " oh you're right. I was talking about this entree with someone and I must have had it on my mind" what? Ok. They said her chicken wrap would be out soon. Nope. Both my husband and I were done when the wrap finally came (which wasn't good. A starving teen only ate about 1/3) How awkward . A manager came over and offered some churros....Ok I guess. We asked for the check as we were in our way to an amusement park. We then had to ask for these free churros which is awkward again. The check came and no adjustment for the chicken wrap. That is just hospitality 101. The whole experience was sub par. Mistakes happen but come on, at least try to make up for it. Go that extra mile. Stopped by Diego's last night for a quick bite and drink as we were in the area already after a long day. They were out of the nachos by the time we arrived so we decided to try the shrimp tacos instead as well as the silver fox cocktail. The tacos were flavorful, sweet and sour, but still slightly underwhelming for their $18 price point. The silver fox, one of their takes on a margarita with blood orange and elderflower, was very sweet and easy to drink but lacked depth. The ambiance of the restaurant and the bar was warm and intimate with a little extra flair of skulls leftover from Halloween and Dia de los muertos -- we envision it would be a great date spot based on vibes alone. My husband and I went to Diego's for the first time this past weekend. I was immediately taken with the fun ambiance and the way they've utilized that space. The hostess was quick to greet us and give us a table. The restaurant was not busy when we arrived. During our meal the hostess and server became less attentive. As time went on. We started our meal with chips and guac, which was offered before we had time to review the menu, almost as if one would offer complimentary bread or pretzels for a table when they sit. Since this was our first visit, we were unaware that this was not complimentary protocol and quickly realized we would be charged for the chips and guacamole. We decided to order another appetizer and a taco meal to split, meaning we ordered three dishes in total. When our tacos or brought to the table we asked for extra napkins. After waiting several minutes and watching the hostess and server ignore the front door, my husband had to get up and get extra napkins from the bar. The food was good, but a little overpriced for chips and tacos. I understand it's the east side, so I wasn't surprised by the costs. The ambiance of the restaurant is very cool, however the staff left something to be desired. The only reason I gave it four stars, and not 3, is because the food and ambiance were top notch. I haven't eaten inside a restaurant in the past year because of COVID and was really looking forward to meeting up with some fully vaccinated friends to celebrate our collective birthdays. Someone in the group picked Diego's based on their experience in Newport, so we were excited to check it out. They offer different seating options; curbside, porch (that has overhead heaters) or inside the restaurant and you can make reservations online, which is a plus. The staff, decor, and location are wonderful and it's definitely a place worth checking out. We tried a few small plates; crispy eggplant, empanadas, and chicken nachos and I ordered the street tacos too. Sadly, the food was average and everything we ordered looked better than it tasted. I would likely go back and give it a second try - mostly because of how friendly the staff was. read more

We have been dying to go the Newport location for months and it's always booked by the time we decide to go. On a whim we saw the East Side location had some availability. The space and location is great! We were able to be seated right away, but were surprised that it didn't get busy and there were a lot of empty tables on a weekend evening. Our waitress was very nice and gave us free chips and salsa for our first time. Our drinks were pricey and disappointing. Prices are high, which would be ok if the food wowed us. We both were disappointed with our dishes. Service and location are 5 stars, food and drinks disappointing.
