My bf and I were visiting from Boston as we were seeing a comedy show nearby. I previously looked up speakeasies and cocktail bars in the area, and The Walnut Room kept coming up. We got there about an hour before closing on a Friday night. The lights were low and the ambiance was very chill. There were cozy seating options around the perimeter, but we chose to sit at the bar. There were also a few tables outside. We ordered a couple of rounds from the friendly bartendress and each drink was perfectly balanced - no notes! I'm a sucker for a good cocktail, and Walnut Room did not disappoint! They have bar snacks, so we got a couple of bags of chips to take away the hunger. I will definitely be back to this bar when I'm in the area. A great cocktail can be hard to find, but not here! read more

The Walnut Room is a great stop for cocktails! You really can't go wrong with your pick. They can make any classic and their menu also offers some creative options too! The biggest downside is that it's SO dark inside. I've been when it was light outside and I enjoy it a lot more. But during the winter when it's dark by the time they open, it's a touch too dark for me. Service is always great though - they usually come check on you and are always very welcoming! read more

When I first walked in, I was really excited about the small bar vibe. Decor is super unique and the view looks out to the water which is really cool. When I go to a small bar, one of the thinks I appreciate is staff that speaks with customers and is super welcoming. Unfortunately that wasn't the case at the bar. The two bartenders were talking really loudly about personal matters and didn't really say much to customers. The drink itself was unique. Sweet but fresh. Not sure how I feel about this spot. We just finished dinner down at Otra and wanted to enjoy another cocktail since it was date night with friends & it's not easy for our friends to get a babysitter, So!...we stroll in maybe 9pm-ish on a Saturday night. We had no problem standing around and waiting for an area to open up. We were all having a good time enjoying our cocktails, laughing, talking and wanted to capture our memories being out and about, dressed up nice nice. I took a group pic of the guys first and then asked them to take a pic of the girls when we heard the bartender scream across the room, "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!!!" It was so loud and rude. Someone could have simply walked over and told us nicely. Welp, that didn't sit well with some of us, so we decided to just grab the bill and call it a night. read more

Great spot for a date! We went in after dinner on a Friday night. It was fairly busy while we were there. We ordered two drinks and both were good. I ordered the traveling man and would give it a 5/5. The staff were friendly and attentive and the ambiance was great. A bit of a strange setup. I got here a little bit early before my dinner partner arrived and he wanted to meet up here. I didn't get anything to drink but I got their goldfish. He did get a few beers and she said we're fine. I think one of the strange things was how empty it was on a Friday night. We ended up coming back after dinner again and it was a bit more busy. It's a very sparse setup and there isn't much going on It is literally just a room with some couches. I'm not sure who would venture out again to this place. Great spot for drinks in PVD! Cozy, 80s ambiance and vibe. Got 3 cocktails. The straight to hell cocktail was the best and somewhat similar to a Paloma. The traveling man was good as well and had distinct floral and citrus notes in these. The gin cooler drink was in a bigger glass and is light and refreshing. They have small snacks such as chocolate covered almonds, potato chips and charcuterie board. Overall great spot for a date, post date night drinks or just drinks with friends. This is one of my favorite bars in Providence! I'm honestly shocked by the negative reviews. The cocktails are truly great and STRONG. Anything you get is sure to be fantastic. I recently had a gin and apricot punch that was so light and delicious. The Traveling Man is also really good if you like bourbon cocktails. One thing to be aware of is that the cocktails have a ton of different liquors in them so it might be best to stick to one or two different options to avoid a killer hangover. Cocktails around about $10-12 which is eminently reasonable considering the quality. The atmosphere is really cozy and romantic--it would be a great spot for a date. Only downside is it's not a great place for a loud conversation. They apparently have live jazz sometimes although I haven't encountered that. The bartenders / staff are super friendly and I've never had an issue coming here a half dozen times. It is a relatively smaller spot but also somewhat of a hidden gem so it's usually not too packed even on weekends. I'll definitely come back any time I want a well-crafted cocktail! read more

Swung through for a pre-dinner drink, right after the re-opening of the city post-Covid restrictions. My wife and I were quite happy with our drinks (dirty martini and manhattan). Places can have all of the frills on their cocktail menu, but if they can make the classics perfect - that's a true sign of a good bar, and that is what you'll find at The Walnut Room. We also loved the old-school décor; it sort of felt like a roaring 20's type vibe. Also, after just now reading previous reviews, we did not come across any ill-spirited staff. Love this place! My friends and I dressed up for it because it is definitely a fancy bar - the kind with jazz where people sip whisky instead of taking shots. I love the creativity that went into the menu, every one of them sounded intriguing. I ended up getting the Newton Goes to Washington and my friends got the A Pear Shaped Monk and the wintery one. Wanted to check the place out because of the ambiance, despite the warnings I'd received of the horrendous customer service for which the place now seems to have acquired a reputation. Sadly, the rumors are true. It isn't often that a bar goes out of its way to make their patrons feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, but The Walnut Room seems all but happy to deliver on that promise. What's worse is that I believe the rot emanates directly from the top. Management not only appeared disinterested in remedying the dissatisfactory service, but seemed to have a vested interest in perpetuating the deplorable, condescending nature of their wait staff. I think unless the owner of this bar doesn't act quickly in addressing these micro-aggressions on the part of his/ her own subordinates, then the place will be doomed for failure. In this economy, small businesses ought to be attracting patrons as if their livelihoods depended on it - not actively alienate them, never to return. My advice to all would-be customers.... Tread with caution, lest you be admonished by the condescending attitudes of a wait staff content in their unprofessional ways due to ineffective leadership of management. 1/5 stars, will not be returning any time soon. read more

Always professional, polite, warm and inviting. Went for a monumental birthday and was able to sit outside with my wife and brother. This place is a gem. They know how to mix a proper cocktail and the staff are really warm and friendly. This is my favorite bar in New England. Probably top 5 i've ever been to, in the world. The bartenders have a certain panache and it reflects in the cocktails, which are all balanced and exquisite...but the attention to detail and artistry goes beyond the drinks and illuminates the entire establishment. Tried to come in for a nice cocktail. The girl at the bar wouldn't seat me because she didn't have tables available when there were 2 very visibly empty. When I asked what about those seats she said no because of Covid restrictions and them being too close to the table next to them. Meanwhile, there were other tables literally next to each other over by the window, but I guess that was okay. I came in at 11:45pm, maybe she wanted to close and leave early and didn't want to seat another guest? That's a shame. It's not like she's a bartender at at late night cocktail bar. read more

Great spot! Every aspect is on point. There were three of us, we each had 2 rounds from the cocktail menu and they were creative and enjoyable. Our server was exceptional. 10/10 across the board! Don't let these privileged a-hole reviews keep you away. It is literally infuriating that someone left a 3 star review because "they don't like jazz." Another "covid isn't real" fool is mad about distancing....? Don't take out your personal whack views on a local business trying to make things work during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy The Walnut Room-we never made it past the ill-mannered hostess/bartender. We visited on a Saturday night following dinner at Camilles (5 stars, always). There was only one other couple present yet the hostess couldn't manage a greeting. She demanded we "sit where there is a menu" and then barked across the room that the table we had chosen did not have a menu. We decided to take our business elsewhere. A small, relatively new establishment that is seemingly struggling to survive should put a little more focus on customer service-it goes a long way. read more
