Came in Monday about 11, service was fast, polite and efficient! Brewery is great! Beer was delish! Not a huge selection outside of IPA's but what they had I enjoyed! Pizza... probably not something I would go back for, so much sauce, kind of ruined it for me. Had a Cuban sandwich as well, that was good but not amazing, someone else got chicken tacos.. they were messy... I think I would come for the beer and grab my meal someplace else. read more

This was easily my best experience at a brewery. I'm biased because it's arguably my favorite brewery, but the staff was so attentive and wiling to help when I asked about the new beers they had on draft. The added bonus was that they happened to still have a few cases of King Sue, which I had been hoping to try some day if the stars aligned. My partner and I sat at the bar and struck up a great conversation with a fellow beer lover next to us. I so wish I lived closer! Will be back many, many times ... read more

Toppling Goliath Brewing - Beer Heaven. Pseudo Sue - Breweries Near Me - Decorah, Iowa

See all

Come for the beer but have a nice pizza while you're here. Friendly folks to meet and greet you.

Since this brewery has more hype going that Flavor Flav, I had to try it out on my way to Minneapolis. Friends of mine in SE Iowa own a great little craft beer bar. According to them, TG is illusive and hard to procure if you aren't a major player in the distribution world. People on my local STL beer enthusiast sites are constantly trading or seeking TG for trades, so I knew the beer would be good. The tap room, however, could use a little love. The bar is set up as a former sandwich shop or dive bar. It's oddly angled and has very little seating available, although there is a patio and several tables inside. There are approximately 6 taps at the front bar and the rest are located in the back behind the bar which looks to have once been a small kitchen. This confused me. For having such wonderfully raved about beers, you would think they would want to showcase their taps. Another nitpicky thing I found was that ALL of their glassware was chilled. Not just shaker pints, but snifters, as well. This is a huge no-no in the craft beer world. Drinking beer from a chilled glass inhibits the true flavors and aromas. I assume they are appealing to their clientele, but this totally caught me off guard. Tap room aside, the beers were great. We tried the Pompeii, Mornin Latte, Naughty 90, Psuedo Sue, Hopsmack, and Golden Nugget. The bartenders were friendly and quick. We took some package bottles home, but wish there was a larger selection. Although this brewery may be going through some growing pains, if you are ever in the area you should stop in and taste. read more

Great beer and great pizza!! Wonderful service! I will go back! The servers were very attentive. Delicious thin crust Greek pizza!

The only consistent thing about this brewery is that the beers and quality are inconsistent. You shouldn't have to look at batch dates to determine if a beer is worth buying. read more

Great beers. Food served at venu as well, burgers, apps, pizzas and salads. Couple kids items as well. Nice outdoor patio but is in a sunny area so can get hot. Take the brewery tour if it's your first time. read more

AMAZING beers, food, and service!!! Don't miss stopping here you will regret it!!! I am not a beer drinker but I tried two of the sours and I couldn't believe how awesome they were! Great ambiance inside and outside. Totally worth the stop if you're any where near the Decorah. read more

Beer selection was amazing. We started off at the upstairs bar. Slim selection of beer up there. Had one and went downstairs. Waited half an hour for a seat at the bar. Waited 15 minutes for service and to have glasses from before us to be cleared. Server was nice but walked by several times and didn't acknowledge we had empty glasses. Ordered the loaded chips, or order was lost. 46 minutes later we got it. Cold. Needed salt, and wasn't anything to write home about. My boyfriend makes better at home. Would recommend this brewery for the beer, service and food left much to be desired. Disappointed as we made a 5 hour trip to visit. read more

Excellent choices on tap. Plenty of seating. Always friendly staff. Large, clean restrooms. Naughty 90 is my favorite but always up for trying something new when they change kegs. read more

Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Not a huge selection of beer under 50 IBUs, but their IPAs were very nicely done. The pizzas and sandwiches are very good, would go again! read more

I have no idea what was up two weekends ago but I hope its not always like that. I'd been here once last spring and they had good beer selection, lots of variety- stouts, sours, etc. So last week I drove 90 mins to take two of my friends there for the first time. They had 10 beers on the menu and EIGHT were IPAs, then one pilsner and one stout. My friends and I hate IPAs so we drove all the way there to try two beers. I even asked what else they might have and they were out of anything else. I know they're famous for IPAs but a tasting room needs much more variety. IPAs only have two flavors, really hoppy and insanely hoppy. Otherwise its a cool place and the servers are nice but please add some variety. read more

We did a road trip to escape and see the world or more accurately Bluff Country of southeast MN and northeast Iowa. With things finally slowly opening downtown Decorah was kind of a drag and our desk clerk at the hotel told us to come in. It was great advice. We each built our own beer flights and staff was really great even though this new normal stretched them thin. Well done! read more

Some awesome beer is turned out of this small town in Iowa. Easy drive from MN, which I would recommend for a special beer release. Taproom itself is quaint with a pretty nondescript exterior. No food, but some local delivery options available. Nice place for Decorah but the establishment doesn't hold a candle to a big city taproom in terms of experience. read more

My wife and I made the 4-1/2 hour beer run from NW suburbs of Chicago on Tuesday 7/25/17! Two stops in mind duh! Toppling Goliath and Pulpit Rock! Fist stop Toppling Goliath Brewing! Got there about 2:00 pm they open at noon on Tuesday, 3 hours earlier than second stop! Had decent beers on tap! But the best selection this week were the 22-oz Bombers! King Sue, Fire Skulls & Money, Sosus, and Hopsmack all available in bombers! Tried them all last night definitely worth the trip! Loved all of these IPA, guess if I had to pick would be King Sue, followed closely by Fire Skulls & Money! Thanks TGB! read more

Haven't been here in almost six months, but with the holidays coming up, my wife and I had the opportunity to drive from Chicago to spend a couple of hours drinking at the Midwest's best craft brewery. Nicole and Joey were extremely pleasant, kudos to TG for hiring staff that know their beers. We'll keep coming here as long as the beers stay this awesome (10~ IPA's on draft tonight!!!) and the staff rocks! read more

We are from Cleveland, Ohio and drove all the way out here and I just want to say that it did not disappoint! The food was amazing. Try the Thai peanut pizza! And the beers... oh my gosh the beers.. we tried everything that they have on tap and we loved everything which is so rare. The staff is also so so incredibly nice! (Idk if this is an Iowa thing or a TG thing). I highly recommend this brewery! It is a must if you are in the area! read more

Everything was perfect. Service excellent, food excellent and beer was excellent!! We will be back tomorrow to fill our growlers.

Great beers, but could use more variety. During my visit, they had 4 IPAs. Listen, IPAs are great and all but brew something else for chrissakes. Growler prices are a little steep too, but people appear to happily pay for them (I paid too just wasn't super happy about it). Toppling Goliath, please branch out a bit! read more

Great place to visit. Good food and great beer. Perfect place for a real beer aficionado. Good service and good atmosphere for any occasion

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! The beer selection was awesome, the environment was friendly and warm. My friends and I sat outside drinking until sundown and then went inside and played a game of Scrabble. By the way... any taphouse that has board games available for patrons.... SOLD. Well done TG. We left with two growlers and two bottles of Pseudo Sue. I am so excited to tap into them. read more

Best place in town to drink beer. Recommend Golden Nugget, a lovely 7% ABV, IBU 56 IPA, very floral, not bitter at all due to increased maltiness. read more

Awesome little find in Decorah. Who knew this little town would have some of the best micro beers around. My summer favorite is Dorothys. BTW - no food but you can have it delivered and the outdoor seating area is nice. read more

The beer was good. The building was clean. The staff was not so welcoming. I've been around the country and visited several microbreweries and taprooms and there was a bit of a strained confusion as newcomers entered the tap room. No welcome or hello by the staff and we were unaware if we were to order at the bar (and if so where) and where to get a beer menus. Our flights were great tasting but again it was awkward as the bartender had to ask another patron for their flight board so our order could be completed. Overall lack of communication from staff left the atmosphere feeling cold even though the beer was above average. In a world of growing microbreweries and new people experiencing tap rooms for the first time I just hope people don't get the "beer snob" vibe because this establishment does have something to offer in regards to their brews. read more

Bartender was in gym shorts and pseudo sue t shirt. Asked for light beer recommendation after trying all TGB brews. Was so shocked it was a sour beer, no warning, was expecting some kind of wheat beer or El Hefe. Wasn't anything worth paying for there besides the Dorthys. Name is bigger than it should be. Pulpit Rock has them beat in 2 months. read more

Not really sure how there aren't more positive reviews for TG. Hands down one of the best breweries in the country. Taproom leaves something to be desired, but when you get your first taste of the orange-juice all-citra PseudoSue or the grapefruit-bomb Pompeii, you're sucked into a magical portal of delicious beer that erases time and place. Absolutely worth a day trip from Minneapolis. read more

As a student in Decorah this was the epitome of awesome. I was not a beer person for most of school but TG helped guide my tastes to the dark side. A very relaxed atmosphere with occasional live music and other activities. It was a great place to bring homework in or come with a group to work on something. You can have food ordered in or bring things to share. read more

This brewery deserves the national attention they've received for their beers, especially the IPAs. Don't miss the Zeelander. And the local venue is worthy of the beers: friendly, clean, bright, casual. Enjoy. read more

The beers here were pretty good. I had the Pompeii and the Naughty 90. They were both really good beers. The only things to be aware of is that: (a) they don't have food there so you have to have it delivered; and (b) parking can be a little tight around there. Otherwise if you are in Decorah you should totally visit this place. read more

Disappointing. After driving 3 hrs to visit the "best" brewery in Iowa I expected more. Beer is good but not amazing so not sure why people trade their bottles for hundreds of dollars. Wasn't greeted, nobody even made eye contact with us, even as they were just standing around. Tried to order from three different locations/bartenders (upstairs and downstairs) and continued to be ignored. If your bartenders are ignoring the people sitting right in front of them and serving the people that have just walked up to the right and to the left you have a serious training problem. We even asked someone if we could order a couple of beers, but they were a "server." The least they could have done is directed someone that could serve us our direction. We finally decided to just leave but as walking out felt bad that we had come all that way so ended up finally flagging a guy down in the "to go" area. The place didn't even seem that busy with the staff on hand, and I don't mind waiting, but it is terrible customer service when you aren't even acknowledging your customers. Finished half the beer and left. This place definitely doesn't live up to the hype. read more

Took a road trip out to Decorah from Iowa City and Toppling Goliath was a must. I wasn't sure what to expect because the brewery was on the outskirts of town, but the atmosphere was spacious and inviting. The beer selection was much bigger than I expected, with a bunch of IPAs and pale ales, a few sours, and some stouts. Pretty good variety. Unfortunately the beer menu wasn't completely up to date--the first two beers I tried to order were unavailable. I ended up with a double IPA (Dolphin Sparkles) and was very impressed with both my drink and the price. The food was just as good. I ordered the Cubano, featuring homemade pickles and house made potato chips on the side, and it was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the house burger and mentioned (multiple times) that it was the best burger he'd ever had. I was able to snag a few bites and I didn't disagree. It was so juicy and flavorful--on my next visit I'll be sure to order one for myself. Our service was a little slow; we had to wait several minutes with empty glasses on our next round of beers, but our server seemed to be the only one on the floor, so I'm sure they were just understaffed. Overall, the food and drinks were more than satisfactory and the prices were better than expected. Being the tourists that we were, on our way out we wanted some TG swag. While there was a large selection of t-shirts, the sizes were not well stocked, so we were unable to find our sizes in a majority of the shirts. Not a major complaint, but it would've been nice to leave with a souvenir. read more

Was very excited to visit this brewery because I have been drinking their beers for awhile. The bartenders were trying to be friendly felt very forced. Didn't really like all the children that were there. I will continue to drink the beer they produce but would go to pulpit rock for the atmosphere. read more

Very cheap growlers. Excellent beer. I love the atmosphere - it doesn't feel like a sad bar, more like a place to enjoy a good beer. They have games. Wish they'd stay open later. read more

Stopped by again, this time got a carry-out of the Oatmeal Stout 'truck something' and the Mosaic IPA. Both were fantastic. Check out their calendar to see if there is an event, I coincidentally stopped by on the day of one of their new releases, the place was packed, the beer in bottles to-go was almost sold out. Still have not tried any food, perhaps next time on a less crowded day. read more
