It's always a pleasant surprise to see a brewery that is excellent tucked away in a small town in Middle America. Pivo is just one of these such places. I already had the brewery to try but relatives that live somewhat locally to the town added more justified hype and momentum to give this brewery a try. Without a doubt we will be returning! Might first beer so far with Pivo is their excellent their American Light Lager known as Rice ville Light Lager. As the name suggests this is a rice lager which I do really enjoy getting. This beer is crisp, slightly sweet, malty and a clean finish. That is a highly excellent beer and I can't wait to try more of their beer options. Pivo Brewery is a wonderful venue tucked in the rolling hills of NE Iowa. We visited on a Sunday afternoon on our way through town and were pleasantly surprised that they had live music that afternoon. They had plenty of servers working and the service was prompt and attentive. We ordered the cheese curd appetizer which was just enough, had a few beers (Jamaica IPA was a personal favorite) and listened to some music on a very pleasant afternoon! read more

We were camping at Volga River Rec Area and travel up to Calmar to check out PIVO. We really enjoyed our visit here! The number of beer and cider on tap was very impressive for the size of the town. The five of us all had differ beers for our flights to sample as many as we could responsibly. We also tried their pretzel with beer cheese dip, very good and huge! They have a very nice outside patio area and large inside area to sit. Our server was friendly and helpful. We'll definitely plan to visit again when we're camping in the area next time! read more

Coming in here feels like going to the local neighborhood joint where the staff makes you feel like family and the patrons all know each other from around town. This is our second time here and it's so wonderful to go to a brewery where there's also some food to complement the delicious taps. I got a flight of four: 1. Old Balltown: my favorite. Barrel-aged but is smooth and not too strong as far as that husky feel on the tongue. Lovely aftertaste. 2. Castalia Chocolate Raspberry Stout: raspberry is definitely a good balance with stout. Very delicious. 3. Wadena Whiskey Wee Heavy: ale with strong hint of molasses. Just so so good! 4. Muscatine Brett: yummy ale. Too hard not to love them all! They have a lot of beer and not much else when it comes to alcohol. Tried many different samples with my group. It was definetly interesting. Our waitor kept forgetting about us. He would say he would grab something than wouldn't. We even had a waitress come check on us a couple of times because he kept disappearing. I have food allergies so I had to special order something and the kitchen did not listen. I ended up having to send it back and my group finished there food before I ever got mine. Was not my favorite place because it seemed like the waitor did not care at all nor did I get an apology for their screw up on my food. read more

I'm originally from West, Texas - a Czech town where "pivo" just means "beer". And I think that's a great name for this brewery, where the selection of pivo is HUGE. The most beer-savvy in my group raved about how each beer they tried was "on point", i.e. a textbook example of that kind of beer. My Cuban sandwich was very tasty, though a bit small. I love the fact the the beers are named after towns in the area! "Cresco Cream Ale." The staff was super knowledgeable about the beer and with recommendations based on what we like. The meat and cheese tray came from a local locker...and that is awesome...it did come with head cheese (it's not for everyone, but I like it). Such a great place to spend the afternoon. Blown away by the amount of homegrown brew on tap. Brewmaster really knocked it out of the park. Food menu looked fabulous as well. We enjoyed the names of the beers and the fact they were locally honored. Veteran owned with a lot of love put into the place. We checked this out during the beautiful fall color season. We were happy that they were taking the necessary precautions during the pandemic. We were both in awe of their extensive beer offerings. They make almost all types of beers, so hopefully something for everyone. Including non alcoholic beverages. To top it off, they had a nice little menu of food offerings. We both sampled a few of them and they went well with tje beer we selected. I had a great time doing a flight or 2 of a variety of beers. We had a diverse flight plus a beer with a raspberry shot. Fun to try! Beer cheese with pretzels sealed the deal. I'm giving 5 stars due to the diverse taste testing, but almost gave a 4 because of the noise . I then realized there was a birthday party happening with very happy loud people. We stopped here on a Saturday afternoon to check out the place and sample some beers. There is a significant construction project happening, and we're excited to see what that looks like when completed. There is a very nice gift shop area when you walk in, and a nice sized tasting room in the back. We loved the decor and all of the special touches and thoughts that went into everything - be sure to read the story on the menu! The staff was fantastic- friendly and happy and helpful. We ordered 2 flights of beer and it was hard to decide on 8 tasters from the long list that is available. As a native of NE Iowa, I loved the familiar town names that are on the menu as well. We ordered a soft pretzel and also cheese curds to snack on as we tasted. If we didn't have dinner plans, we would have definitely ordered a sandwich as well. There was a tv in the corner of the room, so we could keep tabs on a football game, but I appreciated that it wasn't a prominent display in the room. I much more enjoyed the laughter and conversations from all of the full tables of people who were there for the time. As we left, I saw the water fountain and cup stand in the hallway - super cool that anyone can go and grab a water at any time. We also saw a tile art display in the hallway where kids can grab a tile, decorate it, and it can be added to the art display. We can't wait to return and try more food and beer! read more

Every bit as good as Toppling Goliath, with more personality and heart. We enjoyed a tasting flight of beers, a couple excellent sandwiches from the grill (Cuban and the Sara), and some cheese curds and pretzels. We appreciated the local spin of the various beers being named after nearby towns, placenames and townships. Certainly worth the drive from Decorah if you are exploring other area breweries, and also worth the trip if you just want some good beer, food and company. And, to top it all off, they even have Grain Belt and Old Style on tap if you want a more commercial beer. read more

We stopped at PIVO on our way home from a weekend in Decorah. It is a newer venue...even smelled new when we walked in. We like patios...and it had two. The beers we tried were excellent. I love cucumber anything and the Conover Cucumber Ale did not disappoint me. I also tried the Cresco Cream Ale and really liked it. The Marzen was good too. We ordered their meat and cheese tray (from a local meat store) as we didn't want much to eat. It was so nice...four of everything and the presentation was well done. Exceptional brewery!! A huge selection to chose from that will please any beer lover. My personal favorites are the Cresco Cream Ale and the Calmar Milk Stout, while my wife loves the Waukon Wit. The entire staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. They even have a little area for young children to play in. I've been to many breweries and Pivo is definitely one of my all-time favorites. We always stop at Pivo every time we are in the Decorah area to visit family. read more
