So a year later and we're back! The chicken was as delicious as we remembered it, as were the onion rings and hot fudge malts! They must've had a new waitress because she didn't know what came with the chicken dinner and my husband asked about fries. Then a little later the big steak fries, which he doesn't really care for, came in the meal. They forgot the potato salad, but we were able to catch one of the workers and have them bring some. A cool old fashioned drive in. Original. Great rootbeer. The Broasted chicken is great. And I really love the pizza burgers. Both were my favorite when I was a kid eating at our AW in Independence . During the summer when fresh peaches are available, they serve an excellent peach shake! The drive in has no indoor seating. You drive up and they come out to take your order and deliver it to your car or to some outdoor seating. read more

Not bad if you want fast food. The cheeseburger and fries were ok. The cheese curds and breaded mushrooms were great! It's a different experience you don't have much of anymore so if you are in the area and want fast food pick this over the regular chains. They are closed in the colder months. Great milk shakes and great cheese balls. My husband used to go here growing up and when we were back for a wedding we stopped at the Barrel to get a shake and some cheese balls and they were delicious. I'm always up for some great fried cheese balls and they have awesome ones. If you are in the mood for a shake and some balls and you live in Northeast Iowa, this is the place to go. read more

A Barrel Burger, consisting of two lukewarm unseasoned gray beef patties, served with no ketchup, mustard, mayo, or pickles, and one of the worst orders of soggy onion rings I have ever had placed before me. My large root beer was incredibly sweet and incredibly flat, but at least it was cold and refreshing. I'm sure this is a wonderful place for ice cream, but for burgers and service it's one I'll be sure to miss the next time I'm in town. read more

Delicious meal! I had the Hi-boy (burger), onion rings, and a chocolate shake. The sauce on the burger was excellent as were the hand-cut onion rings. The shake was not spectacular but still good. We sat outside at one of the picnic tables. You can also order from your car like an old fashioned Sonic. I enjoyed the roadside ambience. Overall very satisfied! read more

Old time drive in; pre-Sonic and A&W as they don't have the speaker menus: a real person takes your order once you turn your headlights on to signal them. we loved it! Had Hi-Boy burgers, onion rings and cheddar crisps. Excellent taste. The o rings especially are a greasy delight. read more

Last year before they closed for winter I ate there a couple of times. I tried the broasted chicken on one visit and their shrimp basket on another. I honestly cannot recommend this place, at least not for those items. The chicken was way over cooked, dry, and very small in size and portion. The shrimp basket was made with small, heavily breaded shrimp that was so soggy with cooking oil that it left an awful aftertaste. Additionally I think for the type of place this is, that the prices were out of line. Won't be going back. read more

Fun to go to an honest-to-god drive-in with car side service. Note that what another reviewer refers to as cheese balls are on the menu as something else--cheddar crisps if I recall correctly. They were fairly salty, and the milkshake was fine but nothing spectacular. Not a lot if options for vegetarians, but if you're a carnivore and like burgers, this might be a good option for you. read more

horrible service !!! not only did the so-called waiter forget to put in our other burger order, which there was only 2, but when we finally received our order, approximately 30-35 minutes later, our burgers and fries were cold by the time we reached our hotel which is about a block away. to make things worse i called the manager to let her know what kind of unexceptable service we received and all she did was tell me she will keep that in-mind and they wil work on for the future. no offerings of replacing cold food with warm food or even a credit for for this horrible service and to tell you the truth if that is how this establichment is managed that would explain the horrible service of her staff!!!! i will not be going back their again. bpvillarreal@msn.com read more
