There are some good pizza places in Iowa and Mabe's is one of them. We started our meal with cheese garlic bread which was cheesy and toasty. Perfect for us who were a bit strung out from all the driving we had done. We selected the toppings and wow, it was very good. I wish we could have taken the pieces back to our cabin. The staff was amazing and very professional even when other guests were being unreasonable about where they wanted to sit. (A soccer team was seated in the large dining room.) As someone who has only ever left one other review, I mean it when I say I never do this, however our experience tonight has left me with no other option. My family (including my father in law who has been coming to Mabe's for 60 years) dined at Mabe's tonight for Halloween. The staff greeted us dressed in costumes and it was so fun! We ordered as soon as we sat down as we have our usual order. Our waitress, Eden, was lovely and brought out our salads and drinks. While eating our salads, my husband had to reach into his mouth to remove something hard...it was a fake nail immediately our stomachs dropped and I lost my appetite thinking about the germs. My father in law notified a different employee who was bussing a nearby table. That employee then told Eden once she returned to our table. She apologized for it, and took the nail with her. During this interaction we noticed our waitress get uncomfortable and tuck her nails under her hands..the nail matched her fingers. A manager then returned to our table to apologize and tell us that she checked the list of morning staff and afternoon staff and said no one had nails of that color or type, and that it is against policy to have press on nails. She even went as far to say that it must've been in the bag of lettuce that they used. We were grossed out by the nail, but disgusted with the lying to our faces. We totally understand things happen and a simple, oh my gosh I'm so sorry about that, would have gone along way. Interestingly enough, when Eden returned to our table she no longer had any nails/nail polish on. Again, very evident to the 5 adults at our table that they were trying to cover. We go on to have our dinner and then when it is time for the bill, a different manager came over to the table with Eden to explain that we did not get charged for the salads, a soda, and that they were taking $15 off the check. This manager also looked us in the eye and said she looked through the trash to see what they were talking about and couldn't find anything...as if we made up the nail that we gave to them? I wish we had taken a photo of it. And then continued to talk to us like we are stupid and didn't look at our waitress's hand who is handing us our drinks and salads and couldn't put two and two together that it was her nail. It is so disappointing that even at our beloved Mabe's they're willing to lie to you than own up to their mistakes. Again, we understand life happens, but lying is a choice. read more

This was a decent pizza place, they have other foods but we didn't try anything else but garlic bread. We tried the chicken pizza and a meat lovers pizza. Both had plenty of ingredients, they didn't skimp on that part! Service was hit and miss, we had a really friendly and energetic high school student who often checked on us to see if we needed anything. The only issue was our garlic bread appetizer came out after we got our pizzas. We needed to ask about them and could see them on the kitchen counter getting cold. The server apologized saying he never heard his name called to pick them up. It happens. There is plenty of room inside for two people or a larger group. The place was well lit for the evening crowd and I felt it was very clean. We would go back if we were in town. read more

We went for lunch on a Sunday, so it wasn't too busy, but the service was attentive and courteous. We both had pizza and the thin crust style comes cut into squares. How does Mabe's not have 5 stars? We were traveling through Iowa in a road trip from NC to SD. Dacorah was a pit stop for the night. We were told to go to Mabe's. The restaurant was just what I expected for a small midwestern town. The employees were kind. The food- outstanding! We ordered a taco pizza and a taco salad, as I had read online, that while in Iowa, taco pizza was a thing to get. Both were absolutely delicious! We highly recommend Mabe's! read more

Food was excellent but had a little issue with my food. I was told my pizza would be about 2 minutes after the rest of the tables food arrived. Then, about 3 minutes later I was told the kitchen messed up and dropped my pizza so they had to remake it. Visiting Decorah for the first time, Mabe's was on the list of places to check out. A local legend of a place that has been around for many years. The DesMoines Register has their pizza listed as one of the 100 foods in Iowa to experience before you die. So of course we ordered the pizza! Thin crispy crust was yummy with generous toppings. It was a family dining environment with a dining room filled with what appeared to be locals. Staff was helpful and attentive. Prices very reasonable. Pizza, chicken fingers, fries, and onion rings was the order from Mabe's during May 2020. I ordered the kids chicken fingers and they were perfect. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the French fries!! I don't know how they made them but they were so good! And, local bbq sauce made in Iowa-even better!! The onion rings were also super tasty! Mmm! I would order those again! The pizza looked pretty good but seemed soft on the bottom. I only ate one piece from a corner without cheese so I don't have a good enough take on the pizza to give an accurate review. Everyone else seems to really like it so there is that! I would definitely stop by here the next time I'm in Decorah.
