Food, service, and ambiance are all 5 stars. Walk in the store and you are immediately transported back to the 50's with a collection of antique goodies and stark white walls. Seating is available on the first floor, upstairs, and on the second floor balcony providing an overview of downtown Decorah. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I can honestly say I've never seen rainbow cones, so this was a lovely surprise for me and my kids! They enjoyed picking out both a color of cone and a flavor of ice cream. I have to recommend the heaps of love flavor because it brought me joy having all my favorite flavors in one ice cream scoop. I have a feeling we would like all the flavors though. Love this place it is so good! There are vegan and gluten free options and they have a sign when you order to let them know if you have food allergies and they will take every step they can so you do not have any contamination. They have seperate containers and a back counter they work on and seperate utensils. They do not have gluten free cones but they do offer a dish option which works great! I also love the atmosphere there. They have two floors with plenty of seating if you want to take a load off and eat there. They also have a lot of history. The store dates back quite a ways and the upstairs has a bunch of historical information from the ice cream shop. read more

The local couple that owns this shop seems to be in business for more than money. They seem to like their customers! Service is good and employees have happy attitudes. That's not always the case at ice cream shops, is it? The product is very rich and there are many different flavors: a few chocolate based, several fruit themed, some wacky flavors (coffee ice cream with Oreo chunks!) How anyone can visit and NOT get a flight is beyond me. The flavors are just too good to choose! We did a flight of 6 and found it more than reasonable for the price. Highlights were an apple pie caramel flavor, cake batter fudge (good but not my favorite), munchie madness (my toddler went bananas for this one), and london fog (a highlight for sure)! WOW WOW WOW! You don't even have to walk in to know this is THE place for ice cream. It was poppin!! We were here on a Saturday night, the two people working were on it even with the long line! They have QR codes of their flavors available that day to see ingredients which was great to have as someone in our group was gluten free. They still had so many options. We lived large and did a 12 scoop ice cream flight, between the 4 of us it was more than enough. If you've ever said "I wish this was an ice cream flavor..." you'll find it here! There was not a single flavor I didn't find myself saying YUM. My favorite was "this just got serious" If you like classic vanilla I'm sure they do it right here, but take the time to say YOLO and try something new because you'll be missing out! We stopped by for a sweet treat after lunch. We saw you could order ahead online, unfortunately, the online menu didn't have any description of tue ice cream flavors. Speaking of which, there were several to choose from. If I hadn't just had lunch, I would have tried 2 scoops. I had the apple one which was great. I got the waffle cone, which was fine, crispy,not stale, but nothing to get excited about. I hope to go back to try another flavor (or 2) if our area visit allows time for it. read more

What goes good with a small town - ice cream! We went to the Sugar Bowl this time when we were in Decorah, Iowa for our nieces graduation from Luther College. The first time we went to the Whippy Dip, so this time, we walked to the Sugar Bowl. Cute! Cute! Cute! You need to go inside and see the decor - old town, old memorabilia. Ice Cream - the hard ice cream, with lots of flavors. The only negative that I can say about the flavors, is that only 2 or 3 were without chocolate. I know, Chocolate rules the world, but what if you are allergic to it, like me! I was bummed. I didn't want vanilla, as vanilla is my favorite flavor, I wanted something else. I didn't want orange sherbert. So, I had the blueberry cake flavor. What would I say - it was very good! I only wish that some of the flavors didn't have chocolate! I really wanted some of the other flavors, but extra chocolate chips were thrown in. Hey, Sugar Bowl - can you make some flavors without chocolate, just a suggestion.
