Such a top notch brewery. Quite a small place, with another private room that you can rent (there was an adult choir rehearsing last time I was there), and a patio. The beer is great here, they really execute each style well. Friendly service too. There are generally a lot of can options to go, make sure to get as many as you can. The tap list is pretty small, highly recommend trying as many as you can or sharing a flight and a pour. Really great lagers, ales, fruited sours, and stouts!

We're glad we made it here! It's a true blue, funky, chill brewery meant to bring friends together. I love that in winter there are some cozy outdoor igloos to hang out with a date or friends in while warming up with a nice beer. It's easy to make a decision when Bob Marley is crooning in the background, makes me almost want to softly groove up to the bar. I had the S'Mortal Combat, an imperial stout aged in rye and bourbon barrels. It is DIVINE. My only wish is if it would be more than 2 oz. That just means I need to order another! The guy helping us was friendly and encouraged us to ask any questions. There's nice seating, small and large tables, high tops and low, seats around the bar. The bathrooms are ok, a little cozy in there but clean. The whole place gives off an industrial, yet farm-house rustic vibe.

Went here for my second time and it did not disappoint. Separate lines for can purchases and drafts made it easy to sit at the bar and drink sample flights. Apparently there was $10 off a case so there were quite a few people there for that, but the staff was friendly and attentive and all had a good time. Love the location- it is an old garage type place, really enjoyed the beers Church Salad really did taste like a church salad. Delicious! Spend some time at this place it's well worth it.

We came too early the first time so we had to come back after noon. We are glad we did, as the place is quaint and fun. The place is tucked into an older building and has great indoor and outdoor seating options. We skipped the bar this time and opted for the patio. They have a nice selection of interesting beers and sours. We enjoyed them all! Our 2 favorites were the salty dawg and Tingles (amazing). We ended up taking home a couple of 4 packs. Sadly they are gone already! The guys working this day were very friendly and helpful with selections and quick to serve! If you have not tried Pulpit Rock beers give them a try, it is very high quality and delicious!!! read more

Great spot.. Great beers.. Great service.. Lots of seating inside and outside on their patio. The bartender was crushing it today, taking care of the people at the bar and the long walk up line.. kudos to him! We ordered some beers at the bar and some cans to go. The IPAs and the sour we had in draft were great, looking forward to drinking the cans. A must stop when in Decorah. read more

It's just one of the best, small breweries in the Midwest and maybe anywhere. Can't beat any of the pour over porter variants if you're lucky enough to get one. Imperial stouts are amazeballs but rare. Church Salad? Wow. Saftig, Rhyme Animal... it goes on and on. read more

We were visiting Decorah from Saint Paul and had never heard of this brewery. I'm not sure why, everything we tried on the tap list was delicious. We tried the Porter, Czech Amber Lager, Pilsner, and Saftig IPA (their flagship). I wish we hadn't waited to try this place until our last day in Decorah. If I'm in town again, Pulpit Rock will be a must. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the seating options were unique. I loved the couches made from old barrels. We didn't try the food from the Landing Market next door, but the brewery had QR codes up so you could easily order snacks or a meal if you were hungry. Tip: The brewery might look closed as you walk up from College Drive, but just go left around the building and enter from the patio! read more

Ambiance: inside or outside is chill, comfortable, and friendly. We ALWAYS stop in here when we are in town, 2-3 times per year, many times more than once on a trip. Self-serve. Bring your food or order it anywhere. We really like Armory BBQ across the street. read more

We traveled up to Decorah from Joliet just for Pulpit Rock. This was our second time out there and it did not disappoint! We had several styles and a cooler full to take home. One review (John N) said something about food being ok. Not sure what he was talking about - no food here but they encourage you to bring in local food. Maybe John N got his breweries mixed up. Freda, the bartender was super friendly. I absolutely LOVE this place and wish we lived closer. read more

Easy Lover Skål Til Steinen Pour Over Porter I really like this place. We had three beers and all three beers were excellent. I would recommend to stop here if you are coming to Decorah Iowa. It's nice to sit outside as well they have plenty of seating inside. The employees were also very nice! read more

First time here. Wow what a selection of fresh beers and Sours.Yummy yummy yummy. My friend and I had a ball sampling so many beers. Bartenders are knowledgeable. They have a lot of indoor and outdoor space. I like that they have three different sizes you can order.The plants outdoors are gorgeous. Quaint little brewery close to downtown area. Bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable- always a good thing! It was disappointing that we drove 2 hrs and there were only a couple of there own brews on tap. A weekend trip to Decorah needed to include Toppling Goliath brewery and this lesser known but IMHO, equally quality brewery. I'm a big fan of sour beers and this place had 4 on tap! Typically 1 or 2 at best almost anywhere else you go. Not only did they have the quantity, they had the quality! All were unique, my favorite being one with peaches and muffins--truly those flavors came through in a subtle and satisfying beer. Great outdoor seating and casual environment. Always packed now. But we still receive superior service. Thanks! We had clairion, heavy lifter, saftig and cidre. It was all so delicious. We also ordered a pizza from mabes. They deliver right to the tap room. Can you improve on that? read more

This little place is not all they say it is..it is more a hang out for college kids and and there is not much seating..the beers are a little high priced for the quality and some of the employees a little arrogant ..We talked to someone named Simon and acted like he did not have the time to give us..rude.. read more

What a fun brewery - unfortunately due to Covid19 the taproom is not open, but you can sit on the patio and enjoy their beverages from a can. Their current beer list has quite a few sours (which I love), however my husband on the other hand likes his lagers - in which they only had one. Loved how clean and well run the service was. Also liked how you could bring in your own food. Definitely. Heck this place out if you are in the decorah area. read more

Decorah has two stellar breweries in such a small town. I remember when this used to be a car dealership next to a laundromat. Now they brew beer. Wonder if the oil and soap have something to do with the amazing brews that come out of this place. I had some mango shake beer and let me tell you it was amazing. I could suck down that alone for brunch anyway. read more

I can't even begin to explain how much I adore Pulpit Rock Brewery. I'm an out of town-er and would recommend ALL Decorah visitors come here once. To me, it is the ideal place that friends come to in the afternoon and sip and sip and sip and sip until night falls and then all you want to keep doing is keep sitting in this cozy garage drinking more beer. It's quite hip for such a small town. The space feels very urban, a hipster Brooklyn vibe that I really love and seemed very modern and progressive for a small Iowa town. Not what I expected visiting the remote Midwest! Think flannel, brown ales, board games....all the feels. Service was so friendly and the beers were very reasonably priced. Tastings offered. What I most loved about this place is that not every beer is like 14% ABV. I feel like this new brewery trend is forcing brewmasters to make these crazy double IPAs that will literally knock you on your socks after 1.5 beers! All the beers are reasonable ABVs which makes you feel like you can drink them for hours. I loved the Dark English Mild beer. So easy to wash down on a Sunday afternoon. Growlers available for $10. Had my stay been longer, I would have needed to take some home for my nightcap. I can't wait to come back and I will intentionally start to seek out distributors and bars that sell their beer. A destination taproom and brewery in Decorah, IA that is focused on high quality small batch craft beers.

History

Established in 2015.

The idea of starting a craft brewery surfaced during a family vacation in the summer of 2013. We've all been involved in the business world for many years. We know our spreadsheets and our PE ratios. But the idea of starting a family business around something we love has been kicking around for awhile. When we combined that entrepreneurial streak with our love of craft beer, well, a brewery and tap room just seemed like a natural. So after many months of research, planning, and collaboration, Pulpit Rock Brewing Co. went from dream to reality. The easiest decision? Our location. Decorah is a small college town with a big heart and wonderful people. All four of our Founders graduated from Luther College, so in a way coming back to Decorah feels like coming home. What better place to start our dream business? And the name? It's a nod to Decorah's Nordic heritage. Plus, it makes a really cool logo.

First things first, it's out of the way for almost everyone, no doubt. That said, once you arrive there's a large open parking lot & tons of seating, as this place is huge. We opted for bar seating, tho tables were also readily available. Speaking of huge, the tap list is also rather large. I love the way they do the flights, with no real set number, just as few or as many tasters as you'd like. Each taster has FANTASTIC signage, keeping you informed as to what you are drinking. We did a flight & 1 full high abv BA. The oktoberfest had lovely spice. This was also our lunch stop & we ordered a pretzel with 2 sauces - cheese & mustard, the mustard sauce is a sweet mustard, be warned & the cheese sauce was so-so. The pretzel was a bready-type, as in pretzel shaped breadstick. While it wasn't bad, it also wasn't that authentic Bavarian-style one might be expecting, as I know we were expecting it. I wouldn't order it again here. We also order the Blackened Mahi Tacos. These went nicely with the brews & we both enjoyed them. Initially, service was very attentive, and we were adding as we went. Once we stopped adding to the order, service tapped out & we ended up standing at our stop waiting for the bill. Nothing too drastic. We had both used the restrooms in turns while waiting & the bill came up just as the 2nd of us walked back up. All in all, pricing wasn't crazy high, service was good, the selection was varied & appeared to have something for everyone. The vibe was a bit underwhelming, perhaps because they had just opened for the day(?) We were both glad that we'd made the stop & there was only 1 beer from our selection that neither of us cared for. Each of us disliked 1 other, but that worked, as the other 1 did like it. The only real disappointment was the pretzel, as pretzel snobs... if there is such a thing as a pretzel snob...
