The menu wasn't so overwhelming you couldn't decide. I ordered the French toast platter with bacon and hash browns. It was a pretty standard French toast breakfast. I enjoyed it and had more than enough. The code was hot and good. I eyeballed the pies on the way out , next time! My son said his breakfast was really yummy. His pancake was the size of the plate. Excellent breakfast place! My omelet was delicious. My husband had biscuits and gravy. It was a family friendly place which made me happy. The servers were excellent and I wish I could have tried a piece of pie. They looked so good. I'm glad that we are planning to return to Decorah. While staying in town, this is my boyfriend and I's favorite breakfast spot. He always gets the "All-American" with a pancake and I order whatever I'm in the mood for that morning. The new owners (as of 2024) have not made huge changes. At least, not that I've noticed. But that's a good thing! They still serve good breakfast all day. The burgers and sandwiches are still tasting great. And the side dishes are still "traditional" with a few surprises thrown in. The food quality has always appeared above average to me. The service is pretty straightforward and usually hovers around "fair to good"; nobody is rude or cold but they're more focused on efficiency than on warmth which is fine for a small diner. I've been to The Family Table several times with the hope that I'll feel welcome and be able to enjoy a good meal. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the time that doesn't happen. I don't typically leave reviews but I hope at least one person sees this so they can better understand what they should expect. The food itself can be pretty good, the breakfast menu covers most of what people would want and it for the most part tastes good. Asking for special requests can be tricky especially in the morning(such as just egg whites or specific omelets). Where it starts to fall apart is the afternoon and evening. I've had several burgers that were requested to be medium that came out medium rare at best and the french fries are rarely cooked consistently. What I mean by that is they will be cooked differently depending on the day one eats here. The staff are very very hit or miss as well. Several of the servers don't seem like they want to be there and act inconvenienced when asked for help. There's loud swearing coming from the back especially in the evening which is hard to understand why that's allowed since The Family Table advertises itself as a family restaurant. When the servers eat in the back they will also come to ask how customers are doing while swallowing food from the back. I don't have any problem with them eating in the back, but it's gross and weird to come out with your mouth full. Unfortunately I've also seen one of the servers lick their fingers after what looked like filling a dressing of some kind. It was an older woman with a ponytail who filled what I think was ranch and then licked her fingers... That itself is extremely gross and disappointing. Overall this place is fine. It's not great but it's fine. Living in Decorah the restaurant options are limited and it's very disappointing that I have to either sacrifice what I believe to be very basic hygiene standards or not eat here. I'm not looking for a refund, I don't want anyone fired, and I'm not looking for free food. I just want people to know what they're getting into when they eat here. It's not a family centric restaurant, more of a location where it's a toss up what's going to happen, if you'll hear people swearing, and if that older woman with the ponytail is working don't get any ranch! But hey, if that's what they're going for, they nailed it. read more

The Food is Delicious! Would continue to go just for their Breakfast. However, the atmosphere is ugly (for the lack of words). If you are not a caucasian person, be prepared to get stared at the whole time you are eating by other patrons. Some of these Patrons have the audacity to approach you while eating and ask you where you come from, and after they don't believe you, they then continue with where your parents are from. Most Patrons are older caucasian men and they will stare you down the whole time you are there, male or female. For a Small College town with multiple international and cross-country students, you would think the people would be less ignorant. Considering this is a college town (Luther College), feeding lots of people, whether it's students, or parents/family visiting for Luther's Parents' Weekend, or Homecoming, whatever, the table space is a must! Oh, did I mention that it's clean too! Menu - Breakfast, sandwiches, dinner. We were there for breakfast. My nephew had the Texas Bill's Pancake Meal - two large buttermilk pancakes, hash browns, and choice of bacon,sausage, or ham. It was quite a bit of food, and for a 16 year old - it fit the bill. Price $5.79 My husband had the Two x Four (two by four) - two eggs, two pancakes, two strips of bacon, and two sausage, also very delicious. Price $5.79 I had the All American - two eggs, toast, hash browns, and bacon, no complaints here. Price $5.49. My niece (the one who is attending Luther College - in her second year), as well as my sister, both built their own omelets. Their basic cheese omelet is $5.49, and each additional item is 55 cents each. My brother-in-law had the pancakes. No complaints from anyone. Service - very good, not in your face. The staff works very hard, on their feet all the time, and they have to be, as the place is always crowded. That alone, should tell you something. Good food, good prices, great service, clean, quaint, small town where "everyone knows your name." You CAN'T beat that!
