On my Southern MN trip I went to Lanesboro to visit Sylvan Brewing. A great patio space that the brew dog I brought with me (Bruno), really enjoyed with space both outside in the sun and under a 4 seasons porch style patio. The brewery was founded in 2020 and they are knocking out some great beers. It is the first brewery in over 100 years. The dog and I grabbed a flight and relaxed under the roof of the four seasons patio Sweetbender: A Midwest-stype IPA that feels like a good ol' Session IPA - something you drink whether its 90 degrees out on a lake or freezing out on the lake ice fishing. Medium bitterness, medium pine, low lemon zest, and a low dough malt.  Daisy: A Hazy IPA with a medium-high melon, low orange zest, and medium-low bitterness. The fruity / citrus forward hops provided a good balance to the bitterness of the IBUs in this beer. Gnarly: An Old Ale that sneaks up on you. Medium-high caramel, molasses, and prunes malt profile. Not overly sweet, with a very low spicy bitterness.  Amaretto Sour: A Berliner Weisse inspired by the popular Amaretto Sour cocktail. Light-bodied, notes of lemon and almond. Almost a fruitiness that I couldn't place what the exact flavor was. Extremely refreshing.  ___________________

The ambience is adorable, cozy and rustic! A cool place to come and chill with friends! There's indoor seating, non heated glassed-in separate seating room and an outdoor patio to bring the doggos. The bartender was very welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly. It was semi-busy on a Sunday afternoon and she took really good care of all of us. The beers are separated into 3 categories: Comfy, Crafty and Crazy. These were our faves: Willow (wheat), Daisy (hazy ipa), Brook Stout (it was good but not quite knock socks off) and Venterpils (my fave!). This brewery is located in the cutest downtown of Lanesboro! I feel like we stepped back into time to a more laid back, salt of the earth realness only felt in small town America.

This 5* Brewing Company is on the MN Sips list: Buy one, get one free (see MN Sips Passport app for details). How much better can it be? Yes, please! They offered an interesting Sylvan Seltzer (light citrus seltzer=yum!). I think everyone in our group got a different brew-each one of us claiming theirs was the best! Lots of car & bicycle parking. Great staff (even if we were disruptive tourists trying to figure out what we wanted to try). No food or food truck when we visited, but we went up the block to find some great food. Relaxed vibe out on the porch/outer patio area. Yep, it's worth the stop!

A lot of folks coming in that were biking around the local trails. The community is homey and the space from inside the taproom to outside on the patio embodies that vibe. I got a flight on their trout flight board and sat outside. Red Sky Honey Cranberry: A Honey Ale brewed with Cranberry and Honey Malt. Medium-low sweetness with a low tartness that comes from the bitter cranberry. The honey provides a pleasant balance to it that ensures the cranberry doesn't take over the ale.  Local Yokel Session IPA: A Session IPA inspired by the West Coast IPA style. Using local Civil Sass grown in Southeast Minnesota right up the roat in Chatfield hops provides a pleasant bitterness with a low grapefruit zest flavor.  Egromaniac Rye IPA: A Rye IPA that doesn't shy away from the bold spicy notes of the rye malt. The IPA is packed with flavor with a full body, high hop bitterness, and high rye spiciness. Blueberry Seasonal: A very enjoyable blueberry seasonal that isn't online, but when the beertender told me about it I jumped right on it. It was almost like a blueberry breakfast bread - malty, blueberry fruity, and downright drinkable. My favorite of the four. ___________________

First, I'd like to state that I have visited TG several times in the past. I was so excited to take my girlfriends as I had many amazing meals in the past with their vegan/vegetarian selections, and was confident we would all find something delicious. WOW. What a shock to see the "new" menu which had zero vegan options and the other items were basically an Applebees knock off. The sides we did piece together for a meal were ok and our one brave friend who ordered a chicken bacon wrap said it tasted like they made it hours ago and had no flavor or outstanding qualities. Our experience made me so sad and embarrassed for TG as we travel from out of state to visit decorah. We always look forward to our favorite pseudo sue and the menu, but sadly will probably never return. The restaurant was freezing, the service was not friendly, people had their toddlers screaming and running around at 9pm, just not what you want when you are looking to relax with a beer and food at the end of the day. If this is the demand here in decorah this is not it for your visitors.
