Family dinner with visiting siblings during restaurant week in Nantucket. The sunset view is great and was particularly spectacular the night we went. We arrived about 1/2 hr before sunset and sat on lounge chairs on large lawn on the inner Nantucket harbor. The 3 course prix fixe ($45) menu was a great bargain (probably less than 50% of usual individual price for the items). The food was outstanding - fresh, well prepared, generous portions and delicious. Service was outstanding and pace or serving excellent. Never waiting but not rushed to finish your food quickly. Comfortable (heated), beautiful outside patio with view and classic old time inn restaurant and bar inside. Look for restaurant week (June and September) in Nantucket and go to Topper's for the sunset and food. It was great for the soul! read more

I usually only post good reviews on Yelp but felt the need to warn others about Toppers. We each had the lobster and it was soooo overcooked I had a hard time cutting and chewing the three tiny morsels they serve. Our rude waitress (she has long black hair in a ponytail) did her best to ignore us once we decided not to order a bottle of wine with dinner. We each had a cocktail and then a glass of wine with dinner but I guess this wasn't sufficient. Considering the poor service and disappointing food this was indeed VERY pricey...adding insult to injury. read more

Topper's is known as the nicest place in town. Like most of the Yelpers here, I was excited to dine here with my family. We went during the second week of October, aka the "Shoulder Season." Meaning, just about the end of the busy season. We made reservations for 6:15, then had to move it to 6:45. They accommodated this without a hitch. We arrived at about 6:30 and realized there was only 1 other family eating there. We asked if we could go watch the sunset out on the lawn. We heard it is a legendary spot to view a sunset. They said yes, and also showed us were the lounge (read: bar) is. We got a round of drinks and headed up to the large flat lawn to watch with 6 or 7 other people. Clouds got in the way, but it was still a great experience. The moment the sun dipped below the horizon the unthinkable happened...the sprinklers turned on. Keep in mind, this is pretty much the only place on the island that has a dress code, so everyone out on this lawn is dressed up. Now they are getting sprayed and soaked. My family was in a prime location to make an emergency exit, but 3 or 4 people definitely got blasted. Once back to the restaurant, about a 50 foot walk, the hostess greeted us again, and showed us to our seats. I was surprised there was no apology. Oh well, maybe she didn't see or hear the commotion out there? Topper's has a VERY extensive wine list. From the common bottles you would find at a local wine store, to the $5000 bottles flown in from across the globe. Take your pick. The family decided on a bottle, and ended getting about 4 of them. Appetizers: We got an order of the Pork Cheek, the Tuna, and the Duck Egg. The pork cheek was prepared well. It had a special mustard that really complimented it. The tuna was my favorite. It was served sashimi style, with some fruits and veggies on the side. Well played. The duck egg was poached on a bed of pasta. I honestly wasn't much of a fan, but then again, I'm not the biggest egg fan. Main Course: My table got an assortment of the Sturgeon, the Beef Short Rib, and the Venison. I loved the venison, and also thought it was funny we almost hit a deer on the way to the restaurant. I hadn't had venison in a while, so this was a nice change. Chef's recommendation is medium rare, I went with that. It was delicious. Served with Brussels sprouts and a few other veggies. I would definitely get it again. The short rib was served sliced like a steak, a way I had never seen before. I looked like a fatty filet. It was pretty good, but I prefer more lean of a cut. The sturgeon didn't even get shared. My mother annihilated it. Must have been good, since she is super picky when it comes to fish. Dessert: I got some kind of pumpkin dessert. It was ice cream, pumpkin gel, some fruits, and a pastry of some kind. I cleared the plate. It was all delicious, but never overpowering. All in all, dinner with the other 1%-ers was interesting. We left full and satisfied. But, with the enormous price tag, this was a 1 time deal I think. Maybe later down the road, my wife and I could do it again. OK, I'll admit, i am lucky enough to have had my wedding here. And it wasn't the beautiful location that finally swayed me, it was Toppers. This is some of the best food and service you can get in the world. Trust me. Though my buddy Chef moved on to Oran Mor, I've been since and the new Chef is fantastic as well. He even added a Kobe beef burger that is worth more than its $23 price tag. The bar has one of the most interesting selections of beer and alcohol, and the wine cellar is award-winning. The staff is the finest service you can get, and my favorite waiter Doyd remembers what i like even over a year later. Toppers is one of the finest restaurants in the state, hell, in New England. A beautiful place and the gm was great. Priced as we thought it would be with an excellent short rib flat bread, but a lobster sandwich that rewarded us each with shells on our first bite. The server, who was lovely otherwise, took the sandwich minus the two bites away then still charged us for it?!? The manager eventually took care of it but having to call him over after explaining it ti the waitress was a bit embarrassing. read more

Everything was excellent, but they had "milk-fed piglet" on the menu. I am a conscious meat eater and with so many choices, was disappointed they would serve an animal who had yet to enjoy life or even wean. For that reason, I will not be returning. read more

If you are looking for a breathtaking setting for a sunset dinner on Nantucket, look no further. The deck has a wonderful view of the ocean and you can walk out to it in between courses. The wine list is extensive. In fact, you can browse the list on an iPad that they bring to your table! Wines are served in the appropriate varietal glass. Random mention, but I was kinda impressed that they served on Bernardaud china and used Riedel glasses for water (slightly unnecessary). The "Painkiller" cocktail was complex and made with ground nutmeg. Salads and apps were the highlight for me. I had the beet salad, the beets had the perfect sweetness and the just the right amount of vinaigrette. The lobster bisque was also quite nice. Mains were done well. We got a variety of mains, including steak frites and lobster roll, and everything was cooked to perfection. Some dishes needed additional seasoning. The fries with truffle aioli were awesome with a strong truffle flavor, some of us took the aioli and spread it on our mains. It got cold outside and some of the outdoor heaters in our section were not working, so they were able to move us into the main dining room. For dessert, we had shared 3, 2 fruity and 1 chocolate. Great presentation. The service is gracious and friendly but slightly inconsistent, warranting just over 3 stars but not quite 4. We felt that the staff could have anticipated our needs sooner during the meal, as we had to flag someone down several times (to check why the outdoor heater was not functioning, to order an additional bottle of wine, etc). What made up for it was the fact that the server chased our car to return the credit card we unwittingly left on the table! All in all, good experience and would come back. read more

Toppers hits everything just about right. We took the boat from the docks near the White Elephant. Great trip and great experience all around. The food was spectacular and the service was excellent. The only criticism is that there was no notice by the staff about our timing to head back, nor was there any hurry to get the check settled. It may have been a lack of awareness by the staff. What an amazing experience! Came for lunch almost a week ago with a group of 10, and was so impressed with my entire experience. I started with a blue fish dip that had awesome texture and was presented in a simple, yet elegant manner. For my entree, I had the burger which was perfectly cooked. I will say the one flaw must be that they didnt have any Yellow mustard for the childish pallet tendencies of mine, however the burgers overall taste made up for it. Our server, Jocelyn, was such a delight. She handled our large party with such positivity and was more than on top of everyones orders and requests. overall, it was an awesome experience. read more

Visited Topper's at Wauwinet Inn this July, 2010 for the first time. While the cuisine (what little of it there was) was tasty, it was over the top in its descriptions. If we heard, "It's a work of art" one more time, we would have believed we were in a gallery. Frankly, it is not necessary to gastronomically recreate items if they are good to begin with; it simply conveys an effort at trying too hard. Portions are tiny, and if you believe that a third of an asparagus and a third of a green bean constitutes vegetables, then this might be to your liking. It was not mine. On a "price adjusted basis," Topper's was "fine" - not bad, but certainly not great. The highlight of the meal was the caviar service, though that doesn't demand culinary mastery to prepare. Otherwise, the 3 course prix fixe meal was just ok, particularly considering the cost. In the end, it seemed as if the dishes were trying too hard to be something special and ,in doing so, execution suffered. Service was good/solid/attentive. Been coming here for 30 years and while pricy the food and service are generally excellent. However, last Sunday, the service was off. I had forgot an ID and was denied wine service. While this in itself is understandable, the manner of rejection was discomforting. Initially the server informed me that she would check with the manager as to ordering wine but that it should be ok. The Manager came over and pretended to be a bus boy in filling an already full water glass, while glaring at me. After awkwardly starring at me and storming off, without a word, the waiter said no go on the wine and took a food order. We ordered steak frites, however, only the frites came. The manager and service seemed frazzled all around which you do not expect at a high end establishment. I hope this is only some early season hiccups. If going, don't forget an ID and make sure to have the order read back. read more

I went there for a lovely brunch on a Sunday afternoon. It started out perfect with a boat ride from the Nantucket pier to the dock of the Wauwinet. The very charming and informative Captain Rob gave us some info on the way and then the Manager met us at the pier. This is the kind of service that I love! We sat down to eat in a lovely seat overlooking the herb garden. I was excited to see one of the chef's picking herbs from the garden to use in the kitchen...talk about fresh! Our service was lovely, the setting was beautiful...the food..OK. I wish it was better. I had a Kobe burger and My friend had a trio of mini burgers of Crab, Lobster and Kobe..just OK. We split a side of Parmesan truffle fries..and they got cold immediately! The best part was the fresh berry Daiquiri's..the best I have ever had! I am going back to stay in September...so we will see if I eat dinner there...still undecided. read more

Toppers was a bit of a mixed bag for us. First the good stuff - the dining room is just lovely, for once it was much better in real life than in the pictures. The wine list is the best we have ever seen (and that's saying something) - extensive, incredible variety at VERY reasonable prices. That doesn't mean the wines are cheap - most of the list is well over $100pb and some are over $1000 - but many are offered at prices comparable to what you'd have to pay retail, if you could even find the bottle. If you are a "wino", this place is a must. (Oh and we were given a typical book - no Ipad here - wonder if they got rid of that?). Service was good if a little slow. Our four course dinner took over two hours. One of our main course orders got mixed up (everyone makes mistakes - no biggie), and it seemed to knock the wheels off the wagon a bit. Big delay in getting the right mains, and when they arrived most were cold. I cannot fault them for using the original food that was correctly prepared, I would never suggest that they waste those items. But if you're going to send it back to us, you need to figure out a way to keep it hot. Best thing we ate was the Uni/shrimp risotto - fantastic. All else ranged from good to ok. But I can't really complain since it wasn't super expensive (3 large courses for $49pp - we added a fourth, which was unnecessary). Beware of the dependability of the shuttle to/from White Elephant. We struggled both directions - told it would wait and it didn't, told it would there at certain time, it wasn't etc. In the end we made it without having to call/wait for a taxi, but in both cases there were delays and confusion. read more

Toppers is a good night out. it is slightly misleading in its promotion of its scenic dining. it does have a fantastic view of the sunset almost unbeatable on the island. that said it really is only accessible to the hotel guest and is not really that visible to the dinning outdoor guests and is not at all visible be the indoor guest. the food is good not great but decent. I would not say don't go here cause it is a decent night out especially on a nice weather evening,but i also would go back. my meal was good but not worth the price and the lure of the sunset is not worth the hype. read more

Three stars is about right for this place. Ordered the wagyu beef tenderloin entree which was the special of the night which cost more than the entire Chef's Tasting Menu that was being offered that night. I have had Kobe beef before which was buttery and well marbled - this wagyu was disappointing not rich - it was more just like a really tender filet mignon. Also it came with shaved black summer truffles - I knew it was a bad sign when all the waitress could tell me was that they were "from Italy". Where in Italy?? As expected the truffles were not potent at all and had very little flavor of their own and were not able to hold up against the other favors of the dish. To bad you can't review with less than one star, they deserved it! To keep it short, do not go for dinner. Pricey, salty, tasteless, pompous. There were two courses so poor that the entire table started laughing. The first course on the tasting menu - scallops, was off - fishy and just gross! The gnocchi was extremely heavy, not like a pillow. The steak was tough and had tendons running through it. The "cheese plate" presentation was laughable. The dessert with the "balsamic sorbet over a fig souffle" - tasted like microwaved bread pudding placed under frozen salad dressing. You might read this review and think, well there are some good reviews, let's give it a shot anyways. You'll regret it! read more

We took the boat over from the White Elephant to Topper's for lunch. On the way, we met some awesome sexagenarians who regaled us with their experiences sailing the high seas before electricity was invented. Lunch on the patio was great; the quick nap before the boat left to return to the hotel was even better. Overall, the food was okay, and the experience was a lot of fun. Disappointing lunch - beautiful setting and view but service was subpar and food was just OK. After visiting Nantucket for over 10 years I was really looking forward to finally making it to the Wauwinet and dining at Toppers. I was with a group of 5 as a small baby shower celebration. I was really surprised at the quality of the overall experience. The wait staff was pleasant but not very attentive despite it not being very busy. Once our bottle of wine was finished no one ever came back to see if we wanted another. Most of us ordered salads. The dressing was barely noticeable and flavorless. Also I had asked to substitute goat cheese for the ricotta on one of the salads. They were happy to accommodate however they proceeded to forget the cheese on my plate and two others. When I brought it to their attention they brought everyone goat cheese instead of what they ordered. I was just shocked at how they could drop the ball on such simple things. I still would like to experience dinner their some time and enjoy the boat cruise but felt the need to share. read more

Topper's is the restaurant at The Wauwinet, a 25 minute drive from Town center. The food was excellent -- I had the halibut - and service perfect. I suggest you try the cheese course at the end of the meal. We opened a 1999 Mayacamus and it was delicious. The setting is beautiful. read more

Disappointing was the takeaway. Yes, the boat ride over is an enjoyable experience, and love they have nearly a full bar ready for you on the hour ride. This was probably the highlight. Topper's, known as one of the finest dining experiences on Nantucket should have a more high caliber staff. There were simple language barriers (more bread please?) things that should not occur in fine dining. The service itself was ok - not nearly the experience that we thought. Now, let's discuss the food. The Morel Mushroom Agnolotti was in a word a "joke". We felt it was boarder line fraud to state there was Australian Black Truffles in the dish. If, and I will stress "IF" there were, they were two finger-nailed sized pieces that not only lacked flavor, were nearly inedible. Granted, we are not in high-truffle season, but this was so far off it was embarrassing. The other dishes were nearly unmemorable. Far too many other options on the island, both of high caliber and lower priced that I would recommend. This was an experience - once, and not again. read more

We had the worst meal of our Nantucket stay here. It is extremely expensive but we were prepared to splurge on dinner. Each of us ordered a prix fixe menu. One dish was worse the next. The predominant flavors were salt, bitter, and stale refrigerator. The food was undercooked and cold. Our souffles dissolved into a puddle of uncooked egg whites. The wait staff never cleaned the table next to us and we had to stare at dirty napkins and crumbs for 2 hours. We had to flag down the staff for water and wine orders. Even though we sat inside, there were ants crawling over the table. We noticed that other dinners were ordering off the bar menu- they clearly knew more than we did. We left most of the dishes unfinished but the waiter seemed oblivious. We dropped over $350 for the meal and were duped. read more

Our dinner with the 1 percent: You look around the dining room, at the women in elegant dresses, men in shirts and jackets, or with pullover sweaters slung across their backs, and you know you're not in Kansas anymore. These are the 1 per centers and this is their on-island habitat. My wife and I are visitors here, on-island and sitting in on the Life of Gatsby for a week. Rule #1 for dinner at Toppers: You are about to embark on a dining experience you will remember forever; you will experience a sweet evening of intimacy and elegance. Do not think of money. Think instead of those few opportunities you have for a truly romantic and memorable evening and the value of your most special times with your most special person. Toppers is very special to my wife and me. It's the restaurant I chose to take her to 15 years ago on our first "serious" date, when I was beginning to realize she was the one for me. So basking in the rose hued memory of our budding love, and her incomparable beauty in a black evening gown, we found we could again experience Toppers, but this time from the perspective of our deeper and more permanent bond rather than the tentative and early love of 1998. Tonight we were met by their special 25th Anniversary Tasting Menu, which was 7 courses, including a poached lobster preparation, beef, cheese, vegetables, and a final gasp of warm Dominican chocolate ganache. We added a bottle and half of wonderful Champagne and an ounce of Israeli caviar to the prix fixe dinner - just so nobody could say we skimped. The exhaustive (and exhausting) dinner stretched from about 7:15 past the posted closing time of 9:30. Service was attentive and not obtrusive, and never - not for a second - did we feel rushed. The evening, in fact, had a gentle harmony to it with the food, drink and beautiful company all merging into a sweet and hazy memory that will transcend the few photos we took and remind us both we fell in love for keeps here and that each return visit marks our renewal as a couple and the deeper love we now hold, which like good wine, has improved with age. read more

Food great but service was a disaster last night for our party of 7. Our 8:15 reservation was seated at 8:45. No food hit the table until 9:35. No apology no attention which translates to no management presence in the dining room. Too bad because when dinner finally arrived around 10 the food was very good. Just not worth the wait. They charged me $7 for hot water. I asked for tea. They brought hot water and a tea packet. I was also under the assumption that it was part of free continental breakfast when I was ordering it and of course it was not. Watch your bill like a hawk is my advice! read more

My husband and I ate at Topper's last week and couldn't have been more pleased with the service, food and setting. We sat in the porch area looking out on the water and the spectacular sunset. We were very comfortable as there were heaters placed above every table. The food was delicious--I had the halibut and my husband had the steak. Our waitress Alex was very attentive and welcoming. We dined here twice, first being lunch while we waited for our room to be ready, the second being breakfast the following morning. Lunch: It didn't start off so great, we had to wait 15 minutes until a server arrived and it was obvious the fellow that was supposed to be our server was more interested in the party of 8 that was coming rather than just a two top. I am thankful, though, because our new server was a delight and the one we should have originally had sounded very condescending to the other guests. The drinks, a Nantucket Mule and Elder Rose were delicious (we had several) and our meal was also very good. As others have stated, prices are possibly higher than what matched the food/service but we came expecting this. Also, we sat at a lovely corner table out on the balcony with a gorgeous view of the bay and herb garden. I loved watching the chefs come out to pick the herbs needed. Breakfast: It was nice to be remembered the following morning and while the choices were limited, they were still very good. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, quick to fill my coffee cup which is always a good thing. *One side note, they offer a shuttle since it is roughly 9 miles away from the downtown area, which is wonderful. read more
