This was my first time here. I have denim shorts that had a hole in it by the pocket that I needed fixed. I paid for the repair $13 and a wash $7. The shorts looked rushed - and the sewing was kind of mess. The shorts came back to me unwashed. I understand if they didn't have time to wash it or something but they should have refunded me. They are super nice here which is why I give them 2 stars, and they are quite cheap- but after coming here a couple years since they're a block away from me, and getting some mixed results I am looking for a new cleaner. Half of the time it's ok, but I've had shirts come back with random speckled stains like it got splashed w brown chemical, and half the time items just aren't cleaned. I had taken a bridesmaid dress here to get hemmed. I came in and they took my measurements and told me it would be ready in a couple days. I asked how much it would cost and they quoted me $50. I felt like this price was a little steep seeing as how they were only taking a couple of inches off the bottom and I usually pay $25 - $30 for this elsewhere but figured maybe they were going to take their time and do a good job so I agreed. I came back on the day they told me and they asked if I could wait 30 minutes because they still needed to steam my dress and it wasn't ready yet. I left and came back, paid the $50 then took my dress home. This is the "hem" job they did on my dress. They literally took a pair of scissors and haphazardly cut off the end of my dress then steamed it and gave it back to me. I COULD HAVE DONE THAT MYSELF!! This place should be ashamed of themselves. I had a massive emergency for a beige linen suit that needed alterations in a 24-hour time. I was charged a reasonable fee for the rush service I needed. I had previously taken my suit to Orchard Express, and the alterations were so mediocre that I rushed to get them done here. The lone experience that I had was honestly incredible because they saved my evening. read more

I moved to the area a few months ago and was recommended this place. I've gone there a few times for the wash and fold, this past time my clothes came back snagged. Almost all my pieces came back with pulls and one with holes. I get these clothes are used but I also have had these pieces for years and never had a quality issue while washing them until now. I also know which stains and snags are mine since I wear these all the time and which are not, and these are not. I have a pair of pink Lulu leggings I've had and been washing x1 a month for 5 YEARS with no issues. The store took no responsibility and placed the blame on me for bringing them in already in this condition. The three associates also circled around me screaming at how it's not their fault when I just came to show them what happened to my clothes. No sympathy or responsibility and will not be coming back, and don't recommend others to come either. I'm all for supporting small businesses but the lack of respect and ownership is not professional. read more

Such a bummer to have to write this. Been going to this dry cleaner for 15 years. Asked them to put a zipper in my jacket. Quoted me $50 which was high but decided to pay it. It was sewn poorly so I asked them to try again or give me a discount. Came back. Still crookedly sewn. Rather than discuss with me it was tough to make it straight and give me a discount, he raised his voice and told me I didn't know what I was talking about and that it was perfectly straight. Upsetting and sad. See photos. I'm sure their business will be fine after this since they're the only dry cleaner around. And they are usually pretty good. There are worse problems in the world, but I wanted them to know that loyal customers should be treated with more respect. Any customers should be respect treated with more respect. In a word, don't go here for tailoring. Period. I went for years: the dry cleaning was totally adequate as long as you didn't have any delicate clothing or jobs. The tailoring, under the old tailor, was totally fine especially given the very fair price point. The new tailor is a disaster. He overcharges, communicates unclearly (it's not a Spanish language issue as I speak Spanish; it's a poor communications skills in any language issue), and, when the requested work is not done, refuses to fix it without charging you more. I brought in three pieces last week--two dresses, one skirt--and he charged me 130 dollars. Which is a lot for a local tailor (a lot more than his predecessor, I might add), but I was willing to pay for work done well. Which it was not. None of the dresses were shortened or taken in according to my specifications. When I pointed the errors out--it was a nightmare that I had to bring all three pieces back in, especially as I'd hoped to wear them to a weekend event--I was told they'd charge me 15 dollars per piece to "fix them" since they claimed they'd done what I'd asked. Which was simply not true. So not only have I wasted 130 dollars but I've wasted my time. A totally nuts way to run a business: no accountability, no quality of service. I might add that, while I was there, two other people came in with issues with their dry cleaning. I repeat: Don't go here. read more

if i could give this place negative stars i would. they put my clothes in a plastic bag soaking wet and when i got them back they were still wet and there was black and red mold all over my clothing. they refused to take responsibility for it, argued with me and were talking shit about me in another language and on top of all that- THEY CHARGED ME TO CLEAN THE ITEMS AGAIN. the items didn't come clean and now my clothes are ruined. don't come here. the pictures are after their attempt to clean their mess. read more

I dropped off a red, vintage DVF wrap dress to be dry cleaned. When I returned to pick it up the dress had somehow been turned to pink. While that in itself is disappointing and frustrating, what happened next was even more so. While I explained to the woman at the counter about the discoloration and showed her a photo of me in the dress a week prior (granted it wasn't the best photo, but it did the job), a man stomps from the back of the store to the front and proceeds to tell me that I am wrong. That this dress was always pink and that he dry cleans 100s of dresses every day. At first, I calmly explain to him that this dress was not pink a week ago. I show him the stitching on the dress, which somehow is still red. And I show him the photo. He then gets nasty. He raises his voice at me. He stops to ask the woman at the counter (in Spanish) if this is my first time here. Nice touch Sir, but I can speak Spanish too. And then he yells at me some more. I then, not so calmly anymore, tell him I have been coming here for over a year and a half. I've been nothing but pleasant the entire time. That I am not paying for this. This is not how you treat your customers. I will never come back here again. And that he should look for this review on yelp. Had he been the least bit apologetic, or offered to pay for the dress (which is what a good business would have done) this review would have turned out completely differently. I have emailed DVF customer services to see if there's anything they can do to restore the dress to its original color. I've also asked them for an invoice for the dress in the event that they can't fix it. If that's the case, I will be returning to the dry cleaners for reimbursement. Stay tuned. read more

The story of my birthday pants... The outside decor of Top Hat Tailors & Cleaners had a sun-bleached, weather-worn exterior that spoke of its years of existence and dare, i hoped, wealth of experience hemming pants. I entered. As the Korean Soap Opera blasted from an unseen television, the clerk took my order and safety-pinned my pants to the length I asked for, i immediately felt confidence in her abilities. "This middle-aged woman has seen and cut a lot of pants" i thought to myself. She quoted a price to me "8 dollars." I said, "deal!" she said "come back Friday" (two days) i said "thanks." Our dance complete, i made my way out of the store and trodded back to the one bedroom apartment i call home. Friday comes. I arrived in the afternoon, hoodie over my head as i brave the 312 foot walk from my apartment, and enter. the now familiar, yet ignored, Korean Soap Opera speaking to no one, yet i know keeping my pants company there the last two nights, welcomes me inside. "i've come for my pants" i say. she says "ticket." I hand her my ticket and within mere minutes, she produces my newly hemmed birthday pants. I couldn't wait to try on my pants, as i bounded home over potholes and puddles, all the while, clutching my newly altered jeans, i wondered how they would fit me, if Top Hat Tailors & Cleaners would, could live up to my expectations, and i would like to let the world know... they did. i, Mark B, do declare this formerly unyelped, perhaps unpatronized establishment, safe for all yelpers, anyone on the internet for that matter, in the greater Brooklyn area, to rest assured that they can bring their items here for alterations and receive them back in the condition they desire in a reasonable amount of time, and for a reasonable price. I don't really understand all the bad reviews for this place. It must have come under new management or something in recent years. I've only come here for tailoring. They're pretty much the only one near Lorimer that does that, but luckily, they do it well. 3-day turnaround for three stitch-ups and two fill zipper replacements. Costs are standard (replacing the entire zipper for a dress will run $15-20 anywhere). Everything came back pressed and flawlessly altered. Extra star for customer service. The lady who works here is one of the friendliest I've met in NYC. I kept getting delayed at work, and ended up coming back about a week after I wanted to. No comment or complaint. I took a coat in with a clear salt stain, pointed it out to the woman at the counter and she marked it with a sticker. This clear exchange of information about the stain should have been enough to remove it. However, when I went to pick up the coat it still had a huge salt stain, right on the but, from where I fell. Even though the price is cheap its not worth paying if nothing gets done. I am still looking for a decent dry cleaner in Williamsburg. read more

Interesting to see a comment below about another beautiful designer dress being ruined by discoloration. Same thing happened to me today. I brought in an Isabel Marant dress to be cleaned and when it was returned to me the white parts of the dress were completely yellow. Everyone at the shop denied that it was their fault. They said the dress was yellow when I dropped it off. This is my favorite dress, it was so beautiful and now it is completely ruined. No one offered to accommodate me in any way. I asked for the $10 back that I paid to have it cleaned (ruined) and that was it. I can't believe in such a business it's so easy for them to shirk responsibility and place blame on me. It is so sad to lose my favorite dress and also to be yelled at for brining someone's mistake to their attention. Lesson learned: don't bring nice things to a shitty cleaner. read more

I dropped off a pair of pants to have the waist let out a bit on Thursday. I said I needed it back "early next week". She said "You can have it Wednesday". Since I was leaving for a wedding early Thursday morning, that was cutting it a little close, but OK, no problem. I returned Wednesday morning, paid my $8, picked up my pants, and returned home. I tried on the pants. They had not been altered at all. They were exactly the same. I called and she said "Bring them back". I did, and she didn't apologize or comment at all, just said, "Come back tonight." I came back in at 6pm and she handed them back to me, again without comment. This time, they had been altered (very professionally). I have NO IDEA what happened in the 5 days they just sat there not being altered, or why they were returned to me unaltered. I'm glad they fixed the problem, but I would have appreciated an explanation and apology, at the very least. Thank you for fixing the problem. Please improve your customer service. read more

Pretty great place for alterations. Well-priced and the end product has always been exactly what I asked for. They've probably done ~15 pieces for me over the past 2-3 years. 1/2 of those have been major alterations (ie. "This dress is 2 sizes too big..."). Went to this dry cleaner maybe a handful of times. Out of the 5 times I've been there: --They ripped my blouse, I had to bring it back to have them fix it --I asked them to sew up a rip in my coat's lining (and I paid for it). They only dry cleaned it, the rip is still huge. Now I need to bring it back tomorrow. My advice is to CHECK YOUR CLOTHES CAREFULLY BEFORE you take them home. I'm going to have to wait another week now before I can wear my coat. read more

I showed up too early to pick up my order (my fault) and she apologized profusely and fast tracked it so I wouldnt have to wait long. I had a really nice dress tailored because it was too long and I was nervous because it was so expensive and I didnt have time to get a new one if something went wrong. they have been 5 star with me so far, 3 years running, free pick up and delivery, huge orders done quickly, great tailoring. I still use them even though I have moved to Ridgewood, and they pick up and deliver out here. $20 for zipper replacement is a good deal, btw. As far as designer clothes being ruined -- hmmmm, they clean my helmut lang archive that is 20 years old, as well every new designer piece. Those clothes are still box fresh. I suggest you read the cleaning instructions on your clothes before you take them to any conventional dry cleaner--many delicate items can't actually handle dry cleaning. If you have something that may fade, that's hand wash or CO2 cleaning. read more
