Service was accommodating and prompt. The studio space is pleasant and Arthur was comfortable to work with. My only gripe would be that I had my waist taken in on an expensive, investment pair of jeans. During the fitting I said it feels a bit tight, and he assured me that's where my waist is, anything larger and the jeans wouldn't sit right. I got them back and they looked good in terms of workmanship, nothing shoddy there. I put them on an throughout the day felt the waist was very tight. When I walked, sat, moved at all they are right there against my ribs. He offered to have me bring them back. I didn't have time to return right away and kept wearing them. Then came the wash. First time washing the jeans, and they shrank. Them hem is now shorter and the waist is now tighter. Not is fault per se but I feel as a professional in the biz he could have given me fair warning about the nature of raw denim, as it was a topic brought up about the style of hem needed for such jeans. Terrible experience. Not sure what happened given all the good reviews...but save yourself some trouble and DO NOT bring your clothes here unless you want shoddy, overpriced tailoring from an incredibly rude and unprofessional man running a sketchy operation. I came to Chasing Tailor with 3 pairs of pants for simple hemming - some rush jobs, some regular. The experience in a nutshell -- 1. The tailor, Arthur, is super condescending, rude, and inattentive. Asking him a question (literally any question) will provoke him to borderline snap at you OR just ignore you; it seems his aim is to rush customers in and out with as quickly as possible. His assistant is the exact same way. When I picked up my clothes, he did not bother asking me to try them on to check if I was happy with the job or if any further adjustments were needed (which is standard practice for high end tailors around the world) - he simply dumped my altered clothes on a table and turned around to get back to other jobs. For a tailor who charges $30 just to hem a pair of trousers (which are now about an inch too short), this did NOT cut it for me, no pun intended. 2. There is no privacy at all in the second room they're calling the "changing room" in their shop (which is actually an apartment above Bagelsmith on Lorimer - not even sure this is legal??). Arthur, who sits in the main sewing room, will simply point you to an open den type space in the back of the apartment with no curtain, partition, or door, just a hallway connecting it to the main room. 3. Pricing & Payments - there is no price list for services anywhere, in person or online, not even for simple alterations. It seems that he prices on the spot and will not give you a receipt. The worst part - he charged me ~$20 of "tax" on my $120 of alterations, which I'm now realizing isn't even LEGAL to charge customers on alterations in New York...wild. The shop keeps bizarre business hours -- pick-ups only during 3-6 PM on Tuesdays-Thursdays, they're not open on weekends at all, and most work is by appointment only. I grew up going to small tailor shops in India who are usually forced to operate in tiny, cramped basements on razor thin margins, yet somehow still manage to consistently deliver impeccable service and care about doing a beautiful, precise job for their clients. Glad you're reading. I want to make it clear what I'm saying about this business. I've been getting clothes cut and sewn by Arthur for almost a decade. This is a different deal. Dry cleaners are everywhere. If you're looking for this place, you're already tired of that deal. A tailor is what makes a piece of clothing YOURS. When I first met this gang, I was on the WTF highway because this is so different. Arthur's a different kinda dude. You have to start there and you have to be honest when you walk in. The Williamsburg, over-the-top vibe could intimidate you into trying to show how cool you are, walking out with something you didn't want, and then cranking on the place. That would be bad. Customizing clothing takes time and it takes a few tries sometimes. I came here to have a tuxedo fit for my wedding. I didn't want the rental tuxedo, same old thing, but I wanted a plain black tuxedo with a white shirt. Oxymoron. I spent some time with Arthur and he got the vision. We worked and worked on fine details. The exact (and I mean exact) hem length, getting me to look like a soldier in spite of my lil' love handles, lapels, and crotch adjustment. He took the time to get it right and where he didn't, he fixed it. I will tell you, the plain black tux got more compliments than the white dress. That's what you're getting here. I want to make it clear that Arthur and I are VERY different human beings. Our styles are polar opposites, but we appreciate looking good (and that means very different things to each of us). He accepts what I want to look like but he doesn't just let me go out like a loser. I go to a tailor for his ability to see what I want, and maybe throw in some enhancing opinions. Accomplished! I purchased a vintage coat that was gorgeous, but had definitely seen better days - in my search for someone to repair the ripped hem I found Chasing Tailor. I came in and met Arthur and Bonnie (his super cute dog) He was super laid back and friendly. I was recently given a hand me down suit from my father. It's beautiful, worsted wool, the type of craftsmanship that is hard to come by these days. The problem? Myself and my father and NOT the same height or shape. I called up Chasing Tailor and spoke to Arthur. I told him my story, and he walked me through my options, making sure to explain that there was a good chance that the suit may never fit me. I made an appointment and came by. Arthur had me try the suit on, and he took out a mountain of pins and chalk, and got to work, talking me through each section of the suit, asking me what look I wanted, and explained what the options were with what we had. A week later, I came back to get the results. He took in the jacket, let out the pants hem and narrowed the pants legs, and got rid of the baggy seat of the pants. I try it on, and it may be the best fitting suit I own. And it cost me less than my local dry cleaners quoted me for the same work. read more

It seems like a lot of people love this place, so I'm hopeful my negative experience was just a fluke. They kept moving my appointment to come in and try on a dress they were taking in for me because it was Fashion Week. Then, when finally came in, I asked them to please only pin it and not actually cut into the fabric because I wasn't sure yet if I wanted actually to get the dress taken in. When I came back in, they had, in fact, removed the zipper completely. Also, both times I came in, they asked me what we were doing with the dress as though they'd never met me before and hadn't spoken to me at length about it. When I asked them to please just put the zipper back in and give me the dress back, it was all wrinkled, and it took them a while to find the belt that had been attached to it. Bummer. I love small, local businesses, and it pains me to be so disappointed by one. read more

Came here to get a bunch of pants hemmed last year - the job that was done was okay for most of my pants, but they definitely got the measurements wrong. I'm a short gal and needs to get EVERYTHING hemmed - I was hoping I could rely on this place as my main tailor. Most of the pants I got back were either an inch longer than I had wanted or and inch shorter (what's the point in paying for a service if they don't get it right..?) All the slacks I brought here were Theory - an expensive brand, or AG Jeans. Another pair I got back, the legs were NOT even, one was over an inch longer than the other ... how can an experienced tailor do that..? Not sure. Let me start off by saying that Arthur is a very nice and genuine guy who helped a relative tailor newcomer feel comfortable. I have gotten suits tailored about once a year for the past 4 years. I am very familiar with how tailored suits are supposed to lay and fit on my body, and I expected to pay a solid price to get that fit. I brought in 2 pairs of pants and 2 sport coats. The fitting went great, I listed out the alterations I'd like and overall look I was going for and Arthur made some helpful suggestions. Arthur even saw that I was sweating and offered me homemade tea which hit the spot. I was confident I would be happy with the work that was to be done. However, Arthur was late on the estimated delivery by over two weeks but it was around the Memorial Day holiday and I wasn't in a huge rush. When I was able to go back in to try on my items most of the changes I requested were way off. The hem on one pair of pants was off by 2 inches, I brought in the waist on a pair of pants and it was off by an inch making it too tight at my normal height, and the worst was that my off the rack Brooks Brothers sport coat appears to have had the shoulders significantly worsened. On that particular jacket there was a bit of rolling in between my shoulder blades which I was told could be easily fixed (for a very significant fee). Yet when I tried on the jacket the rolling was much worse, AND the shoulders were now horizontally twisting. This is when I learned that Arthur had not at all worked on my items and instead his assistant/apprentice had. I chose Chasing Tailor mostly for the reviews of Arthur; had I known his assistant would be working on my items I would not have chosen Chasing Tailor. Arthur spent an extra 30 minutes fixing the mistakes I listed above and having the assistant fix the rolling issue on the jacket but the jacket still looks worse than when I had it off the rack because of the shoulder issue. To conclude, I paid quite a considerable amount of money for alterations and my items look "alright" at best. I would be very hesitant to choose Chasing Tailor again except for basic alterations, or without the direct statement that Arthur would be working on my items. The irony is that today I received my bespoke suit from China where I emailed in my measurements and it's flawless and fits like a glove. Go figure. read more

I have to say, Arther is a perfectionist. He almost creates a new beautiful piece out of an old piece of clothing. I had a dress to wear at my friend's black tie wedding and he altered it so beautifully. It fit more perfect than I imagined!!! He also cares about your satisfaction more than you do. He even called me to do another round of fitting to make sure I was comfortable in the dress and able to breathe in it. He seemed so effortless but your piece will be perfect. I really respect his professionalism. He was also very flexible with the business hours. I could not go before 6 because of my work but he was willing to wait for me. I actually really liked Arthur, so I feel bad saying negative things. However, I'll try and keep it constructive in case he reads this. A) Separate your work and personal phones- it's very disorienting to get a gruff "hello" when calling for the first time. B) Or heck, just get rid of the phone altogether and move business correspondence to email. Our interactions brightened considerably once we moved to text. C) I go to somebody with a good reputation because I don't always know what is proper or what will look good. If I wanted to tell somebody exactly what to do, I would have chosen somewhere more convenient. D) Most good tailors are late- but loose threads and erratic stitches make this seem less ok. E) Keep my stuff in one place and remember where that place is. I spend a lot of time finding and altering my clothing. The idea of losing something worries me. Overall, I get the feeling that Arthur is an excellent Tailor who might be considerably overbooked. My experience was pretty bad, but I wouldn't necessarily let that stop someone from calling- especially in the off-season. read more

Let me preface this by saying, I've never gotten anything tailored here, I'm basing this solely on a single appointment I had this evening. My fiancé has had a suit tailored here, and they did a great job, according to him. That being said, I would NOT recommend this tailor. 1. You have to make an appointment if you want to go here. Fine, I called 3 weeks ahead and was told to call back at a later date as they don't take appointments that far out. Okay. So, I called back 2 weeks later and was then told that they are booked up. Umm what? I was able to talk my way into getting an appointment by explaining that I called weeks before. Not ideal, but seemed to be okay. 2. My appointment was this evening to have my wedding dress tailored for my wedding. The seamstress, Natalie, has a very nonchalant bedside manner. She was not very engaged, and was very little help in figuring out where the dress needed to be taken in. She did not instill any confidence in me that she knew what she was doing. I'm not saying that I need to be fawned over, but a little (even feigned) enthusiasm wouldn't hurt. Especially if I'm trusting you with my one-of-a-kind vintage wedding dress, and giving you hundreds of dollars. Oh, also, there are two little yappy dogs that live here, and run around the sewing room/studio. I would never leave my treasured garments in the same room as pets. It's nothing against the dogs (I love dogs!), it's just common sense. If I were getting pants hemmed, sure maybe I'd go here, but if you want any kind of attention to detail or customer service, skip it. read more

Arthur is a very nice guy, he is polite, has reasonable prices, and he even delivers; unffortunately the work he did on my navy suit pants was completely unsatisfactory. Finding a good tailor in NYC is hard, and I think ultimately you really do get what you pair for...your first impression Arthur is of an experienced tailor but he deffinately lacks skill in basic fundmentals. The pants which were baggy around the legs and seat area needed to be taken in, I suggested a possible tapering of the legs, however he advised only the rise needed adjusting. After getting back the pants he worked on(delivery) I noticed his work on the rise did not line up properly, seams where not evenly connected and had threads poking out; the pants were bunching at the croch and were still baggy at the legs! and for some odd reason the crease on the pants was completely gone??!?! My faith in Arthur was coimpletely diminished and I decided to use another tailor to make repairs on his work, "The Williamsburg Seamster" who as of right now has NOT been able to fix Arthurs initial dissaster on the rise/crotch area....thats how bad it is.... Tailors like Arthur, who "eye" how the pants hang on you, dont use saftey pins or chalk marks while you are wearing the clothing are not to be trusted. He may be good with shirt and jacket alterations but I would avoid using him for pants! read more

Usually my reviews are reserved solely for restaurants but my experience here was so phenomenal that it would be an offense not to write one for these kind folks. Note that my alterations were simply hems on two pairs of jeans, so nothing complex. After Arthur pinned my pants, I expected the usual 5-7 day turn over for the jeans but then and there he asked if I wanted to wait for them to be done. I ended up waiting a humble 20 minutes for both pants. On top of that, the hems were $10 a pair which I thought was phenomenal for NY rates. As a seamstress's son, I double checked the quality of the work and it was quite excellent. 5 stars for Arthur's speed and quality of work. I'll be sure to return here again. read more

Excellent tailor. Took a $300 Macy's suit and made it look like a custom suit. I knew my suit looked dumpy and I wanted it to fit better but didn't know exactly what to ask for. Arthur was able to interpret what I wanted and execute it to perfection. He set up a private time to find out what I wanted and then a private time to pick up the finished suit and then hemmed my pants on the spot. I'm really happy with the results AND the price. The setting, though unconventional, is endearing to me, too. Loft with windows looking out on to the J line and two yappy dogs. A Master Artist. That is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Arthur. I am from the SF Bay Area and had a very important business meeting in NYC. I had recently toned down quite a bit and needless to say when I arrived, I was very disappointed by how baggy my jacket and pants fit. I found Arthur here on Yelp and called him at 8:30am from JFK. Even though I had no prior appointment and he had just finished working a very long Fashion Week, he graciously offered to take me in and even further provide a 1 hr turnaround, so I would not be late to my meeting. You might think he would do a mediocre job because he knows I'm not from the city and he was doing me the favor of a rush order, but that was not the case. Arthur took Great consideration to carefully examine the proper fit for my new slender physique and I could further tell he took Tremendous pride in his work. The result was a suit that fit like a glove and dramatically boosted my confidence for my big meeting. To say Arthur did a Great job is an understatement. I am sorry to write such a poor review of a local business, but I have to to protect other people. I had the absolutely worst experience here. The guy who runs it is beyond unprofessional and rude. They ruined a brand new pair of $400 pants with their shoddy job (one pleat now doesn't lay straight, and he made the pants too short - not fixable). When I brought up that something looked wrong, the assistant immediately got defensive and the owner literally raised his voice at me and said if I'd come when I was supposed to yesterday he could have tried to fix it (not only is it not possible to fix their low quality work, but since when do customers have to pick up tailored clothing at a specific hour as if it were a work meeting or doctor's appt?!). I have never been treated so badly as a customer. He also keeps super rigid hours and apparently will yell at you if you (the customer) inconvenience him. I'm now out $80 for ruined pants and being yelled at. I don't understand all the positive reviews. STAY AWAY!! read more

Arthur is a really nice guy and I wish I could write a good review. He finished the lining of a jacket of mine and did a nice job and I got it back in decent time. HOWEVER: When I dropped the jacket off, I also needed work done on three dresses. HE NEVER DID ANYTHING ON THEM. He had them there for months, which is my fault since I just never called, but when I finally did, months later, He had done nothing on any three. I had asked to copy the back of one dress in order to let out another and to do this he was going to put in really thick elastic. When I picked up the coat I asked about the dresses and he said he was having trouble finding elastic that thick. Ummm... does he never leave Brooklyn and go to fashion district for supplies? Or maybe he doesn't have internet. Anyway the whole interaction of having to pick up my dresses months later with no work done was beyond strange. Maybe he was offended by the dresses looking vintage, but really being Anthropologie. I will never know. read more

Not only is the man a warlock with needle and thread, he knows a lot about the fashion and music scene in Brooklyn and is great to talk to. After having been quoted some laughably absurd amounts of time (six months?!?) and of money (five hundred dollars?!?!?) for the hemming of my wedding dress, I finally and gratefully found Chasing Tailor. Two weeks later, my dress is perfect and I'm not broke.
