Arthur altered a very complicated Ports 1961 sweater for me, and I'm so happy with it. It had batwing-like dolman sleeves, and the shoulders were too wide, making me look like a football player. I put it on for him, and he marked everything with chalk and had it done within 2 weeks. When I came back to try it on, the shoulders were still slightly too wide, so he altered it for me right then and there. I have to admit that I was a little worried as I would've been with any tailor since the sleeves were so complicated, but it turned out beautifully and looks very chic. Arthur is a wizard, and turned my baggy ill-fitting suit into a perfectly tailored masterpiece. If he doesn't call you when your clothes are ready, simply text or call and ask, as it probably is done and ready, but we are all slightly forgetful people when it comes to reminding (I left my suit there for 3 months before picking it up finally). Prices are also quite reasonable considering the skillful work done. You have to call him in order to get in, he's in a loft space in an industrial area. I went in this joint with a fully ripped inseam. I went to a more conventional dry cleaning-tailor deal and they said 'you have to wash it' and they couldn't do it in less than a day. Dude here just gets to work immeadiatley no bs. You can tell the type of work I put on him is not his favorite type of thing, he even said he couldn't do a blown crotch. But shortly after he got right to work and knocked it out in ten minutes. What a lad. read more

I don't have much experience having clothing tailored but my experience with Chasing Tailor did NOT live up to all the positive reviews here. I found Arthur and, to a lesser degree, Natalie, to be pretty unprofessional and actually quite rude. I brought in a jumpsuit, a pair of shorts, and a pair of pants in to see what was possible in terms of alterations, was quoted prices that felt high, but I thought since this place had been so highly rated, and their apartment is indeed charming, I'd go for it. I came back a week later to find that every item wasn't quite right in one way or another. The jumpsuit in particular had a strap on the back that, once the shoulder straps had been tightened, now lay in an extremely uncomfortable position stretching in a too-tight way across my neck and shoulders. The legs had also been unevenly hemmed. As we were troubleshooting the problems, Arthur suggested maybe adding a new, longer strap, but then realized the extra fabric from the jumpsuit had been thrown away, so this was now impossible. They suggested I wear it, even though it did not feel comfortable, get it dry cleaned (I had planned to bring it to a wedding), and see how it feels, inviting me to bring it back if I wanted it adjusted again. The pants I had the legs brought in on now were much too tight in the crotch, but luckily this was an easy fix. On the same trip--during their narrow window of time they see clients (5-7pm)--I also asked that they bring in the waistband on the pair of shorts I had previously had hemmed. These are a cool vintage pair with a partially elastic waistband. We pinned the waistband, it seemed like a good fit, and he mentioned that he'd replace the elastic as well. When I returned to pick up the shorts, they were overtightened once again--the combination of new, tighter elastic and the alteration now meant that the waist was too tight. It had been some weeks by this point--their time frame, as it turned out, just did not line up with my work schedule--and when I pointed out that the waistband was now too tight to Arthur, he sarcastically suggested that it wasn't the waist on the shorts, but rather that my waist could have changed sizes in the weeks since I'd been there! Not only is this an incredibly rude thing to say to a customer, but also was kind of manipulative? It seems pretty clear to me that replacing worn out elastic AND bringing in the waist of something pretty significantly might result in a piece not fitting in the way I expected. Having now paid these people $145 and been to their apartment three different times on their schedule (by the way, they take PayPal or cash only, which is also pretty inconvenient), and STILL not having the pieces fit the way I want them to, I felt frustrated but optimistic that I would come back and have this issue resolved. I was finally able to return today (my FOURTH visit; but luckily they did agree to let me come in outside their usual "fitting hours") and pick up the shorts. I tried to describe my frustration with this service so far, and especially Arthur's offensive manner the last time I was there. I didn't have cash and was not able to log into Paypal from their computer and left. I know I owe them another $20 but at this point, now more than a month later and with two out of the three pieces fitting worse than when I brought them in, I feel totally ripped off. Very, very disappointed in this business, in the entire experience, and really bummed that my new summer looks didn't work out as I envisioned. I only used Chasing for one small job but I was very happy with the work. Right when the weather turned into fall I got a tear next to the pocket on my only suitable jacket (also one I am addicted to and don't want to replace ever). Arthur took a look at it and said he could get it done but that it might cost as much as...well I won't say prices but it was very inexpensive. It was a very expensive jacket and I was dreading having to replace it, fixing it correctly saved me hundreds of dollars. In the end I came back, it was fixed up perfectly, end of story. read more

I didn't just want to drop off my clothes at a laundromat to be altered and I was very impressed by this place. It's a small collective with an informal feel and personal service. Highest quality workmanship too. It was exactly what I was looking for: a tailor who I could trust and who would give extra care. The main guy, Arthur is laid back but very professional. Call ahead of time to make an appointment but if he's free he'll tell you to come on over. He did a great job taking in two shirts that I bought him. (Though I suspect he's very capable with more complex jobs.) He had me try them on and we talked about how I liked them to fit. He gave suggestions as to what would look best and talked about staying true to the original stitching and quality of construction. We schedule a fitting to make adjustments and then I picked up the shirts within a week and they were perfect. All the while discussing tea, wine, the neighborhood, the Brooklyn music scene and all sorts of fun stuff. I already recommended him to my friends. read more

I'm going to keep this short, despite everything I want to say. Arthur kept my clothes for 2 months, despite a 2 week promise (which honestly, is already really long). He stood me up not once but twice when I tried to pick up my clothes. I literally showed up to his place per his instructions that my clothes were ready, and 1) my clothes weren't ready, 2) he wasn't even there. After I called him for 20 mins saying I was outside his door, he texted me saying "oops, i guess i texted the wrong number." What? Two separate times too? He didn't even really apologize. The 3rd time when I actually got my clothes, he was 20 minutes late too. The work came out fine, and the only consolation is that he gave me a final discount on my tab (because I asked, he didn't offer). He comes off as pretty irresponsible and flippant. When I even showed up for my original appt, he accidentally triple booked the slot so there were 3 of us vying for his attention and changing in front of each other in his apt. I hope my experience is isolated, I'm just not sure how he could care so little and give such poor service in my case. read more

The absolute BEST!!! It takes years in a city, especially NYC, to find a tailor that you can not only trust to do great work, but also have a real relationship with. Some never find it...but these guys are it. They're like your favorite neighborhood coffee shop or barber. And their caring is reflected in the results. I needed to get a pair of men's pants and vest tailored for a wedding that was a mere two weeks away. Arthur was very accommodating given my time crunch, and I was able to bring my suit in the day that I called. His work space is really cool (it's in an awesome loft), and I felt right at home as I talked with him and played with the two tiny rat dogs that live there. He was able to tailor the pants in a way that did not make me look like a pudgy boy (it is no small feat to tailor men's pants to properly fit a woman's body) and made me feel super comfortable. The people that work there are also great, they are very hospitable (offered me water and ginger green tea), and exceptionally queer friendly. I would HIGHLY recommend them, especially for masculine presenting women that don't want to deal with homophobic assholes. read more

I love Arthur, and he's truly a godsend. Listen, if you're expecting a "normal" studio in a storefront with "professional" features, this might not be the place for you. Arthur's phone operation is a little weird (I think it's his cell phone?) and takes getting used to. His studio is a big open loft/pad, with a kitchen, two funny little dogs, always lots of cool soul/funk/psych music blasting, interesting paintings everywhere, and oddball characters all around. Initially, I was skeptical about Arthur, perhaps because he shattered my expectations of a tailor. He's not the atypical image you may have: perhaps an old British man in a vest with a tie and slim pleated slacks and freshly polished wingtips, saying "How do you do sir? May I offer you a sprinkling water or perhaps a moist towelette to freshen up?" No, Arthur is the opposite. He's much more funky, much more rock'n'roll. When I arrived, I think all he said was "Sup. The changing room is over there," while his dogs barked at me on my way over to it. He himself dresses in super loose clothing, typically from the 70s, is most often barefoot, and I think another reviewer put it very accurately: he looks a lot like the muppet Floyd Pepper, and even kinda talks like him too. I won't say his clothes don't fit him, but he definitely wears them loose and so, I will be honest here, my initial thought was, "will this guy really tailor my clothes to fit me well?!" Then I returned for the results. And the results were phenomenal. Shirts and pants that looked like they were made just for me. Solid and consistent execution. And now constant compliments from everyone I know. So I knew I had misjudged Arthur, and I began to bring him most of my warddrobe over time. He's laid-back, funny, smart, friendly (always sure to offer me a drink), fast, and genuinely wants you to look your best. He brings his own opinions to play, but ultimately he says, "you're the driver," and wants you to be happy. So often times, I will say things that I like or don't like, bounce ideas off of him to get his feedback, and that helps me make a more informed decision. It should be said that his feedback is based more on a love of clothing and styles throughout history, rather than sticking to one exact style and knowing only that, as some tailors do. That is, you go to some tailors and they will make you look like everyone else, but I think Arthur is genuinely interested in making clothes unique to each person and what they like. So with that, he's incredibly knowledgeable at helping me nail the perfect fit that is just right for me. Also, I feel very comfortable chatting with him throughout the process, and I'm always learning new and intersting things from him about fashion, history, art, music, life in new york city, you name it. Quick response to the negative feedback about his timeliness and work: I will say Arthur seems a little bit scatterbrained at times, but he's never been late, and he's never stood me up, and he's never messed up a garment for me, and I've brought him easily 30 shirts, some jackets, and pants over the past year. What I have noticed is his business has picked up and he seems to be constantly overbooked, so I'm sure those were strange isolated events that were the result of being overwhelmed. But it looks like he's hired more assistants from what I've seen, so that should likely help. So maybe he's not for everyone. Maybe you're looking for that old british man with loads of politeness to suit you up for a wedding, and that's fine. But if you can vibe with the oddity of his character and his studio and the way he runs things a little differently, you will be happy you've worked with him. I've definitely found my permanent tailor for as long as I live in NYC. read more

I recently purchased a wool fabric coat from Buffalo Exchange and was astounded by its look. However, the Coat was far too big for me. So being someone new to getting clothing altered, I jumped onto Yelp to find a good reputable tailor. I found Chasing Tailor where the guy running it named Arthur located in a quite unpractical location in a Brooklyn Loft. He took care of the Coat in a short amount of time and before I knew it, the coat was fantastic and fitted perfectly. He didn't charge too much and was quite friendly about everything. Arthur and Natalie run a pretty tight ship. When I first started going there, I'll admit I was a bit turned off by their demeanor, but then I realized they were so damn busy. I took that as a good sign. After I visited a few times and they started to recognize me, they both warmed up. The Novices Guide to Getting Out of Chasing Tailor Unscathed: 1. If you are bringing in a wedding suit, don't tell the tailor it's your wedding suit or he will suddenly notice a lot of problems that aren't actually problems. 2. If he advises you to make a bunch of changes and you agree make those changes, there is a chance you will end up with an ill-fitting suit. Just get your pants hemmed and get out of there. 3. Beware that if Chasing Tailor ruins your otherwise a nice fitting, wedding suit (e.g. blazer is so tight the front button is about to burst, and massive wrinkles around the armpits), he won't refund your money, instead he will charge you the same fee a second time to undo the mess. 4. If your suit ends up disaster, take a picture. Yelp reviews with photos are much more effective than reviews without photos. It would probably help to take photos before and after. 5. *Beware that there is a not-so-friendly side lurking beneath proprietor's cool demeanor. Sadly I had no access to a handy guide like this before I visited Chasing Tailor. I had to learn these tricks the hard way. To get my trousers hemmed, one sleeve lengthened, and suspender buttons added, I ended up with a $347 bill. read more

Arthur is a wizard. Not only does he look the part with his specs, but he works magic with scissors and stitches. I've taken shirts and jackets and coats (no pants yet) his way, and he's known exactly what to do. I really appreciate that he does what a tailor is there to do: get your clothes to fit you the way YOU think they should fit. If you go in and tell him that you'd like something a certain way, by all means, if it can be done, he will do it. If you're unsure of what you want, he can advise you (better than most, i might add). If it can't be done or will be (cost) prohibitively difficult, he will let you know in advance. Seriously, the man knows his craft. The studio quite the sight as well: all sorts of artwork on the walls and an interesting selection of tunes in the background. Lest I forget to mention, he's also a genuinely nice guy to chat with. Honestly, I feel so fortunate to have such a craftsman within a 20 minute walk. read more

Arthur very kindly helped me out with a special project. I had some fabric that I wanted to turn into pillow covers -- I was a little bit nervous as I had found this fabric in Morocco years ago, and I knew making pillow covers was a bit outside Arthur's typical work, but he did a really professional job -- they fit the pillows perfectly, and they look beautiful on my couch.
