Arthur is, in my humble opinion, something of a badass. He's worked some miracles on stuff I've brought it: taking in/letting out pants, hemming/cuffing, fitting suit jackets, and more. Prices are always affordable, the work is top notch. Customer service is great, he's very friendly and knows his stuff. Turnaround has always been timely, and he's even dropped stuff of at my house when he knew he'd be in my neighborhood and something was ready. I've gotten lots of good advice from him about what to look for in clothing (fabric, fit, cut). He's also very accommodating when it comes to schedule. Great tailor, give him a try! read more

As a person who wears primarily vintage clothing I am always in need of repairs or alterations. So when I was asking some of my friends for advice on where to take my 60's sharkskin suit for some hemming and a bit of tailoring for the jacket, my pal Janet recommended Arthur. Well, I went to his loft and we immediately hit it off. This guy knows his stuff and his love for vintage clothes is absolutely obvious! Arthur is the best/ most accommodating and entertaining tailor ive ever used. He is friendly (offered my girl and I a beer/water/juice while we waited), cordial and the quality of his work is excellent. Ive had everything worked on; from denim repairs and alterations, a brand new suit to my girlfriends cocktail dress and I have to say all his work has been spectacular. I never leave reviews, but I felt so mislead by Chasing Tailor's great reviews that I had to step in. WORST tailoring experience I have ever had. I needed to have a dress tailored for an event two weeks out, which I clearly communicated at the outset. The work was done sloppily, with loose stitches. Arthur never measured me and then when I needed his "alterations" fixed, he made a huge stink about having to have the work done by the next day. Also he was very hard to get a hold of. I came back and found that the dress had still not been properly tailored. I was going out of town the next day so there was no more time to fix it. When I pointed out the sloppy work, his assistant literally threw the ticket at me, turned and strolled off. Very unprofessional. Only come here if you don't care what your clothes will look like. One star only for his two adorable dogs. read more

Womp womp.... I'm pretty disappointed with my visit to Chaising Tailor. After my beloved Martas was sold I was looking for a good tailor to alter things here and there; given the rave reviews thought I would check this place out, but sadly will NOT be returning. I called Chaising Tailor and realized you have to have an appointment, so booked one and showed up 3 days later, got fitted, and felt confident my jumpsuit would look awesome... Arthur seemed to know his stuff. I was quoted $80 when I left- pretty high IMO but again knew the alterations I needed weren't the simplest (hem pants and sheer overlay along with shortening of straps) so sucked it up and said "OK". I was told to come back in a week to pick up my outfit which I did to find out I was there for a fitting.... but did not know (because I was suppose to be picking up my completed item) and therefore did not have the right heels so would have to make another trip. The next week (week 3) I'm back to pick up my jumpsuit... Get it all tried on and first thing Arthur says was "Hummmm think it should be shorter" all this after 2 fittings and 3 trips to his apartment . I point out a few areas that look super crappy and he says "it was a hard hem". Once I get home I do some further inspection and honestly am annoyed and feel ripped off, I paid $85 for a hem that looks like a 2 year old could have cut straighter. I decided to reach back out to him with pictures of my concerns (even though I was leaving the next day on trip to wear jumpsuit) because I was feeling really frustrated- he agreed I could come back and he would see what he could do.... So I walked back now a 4th time to have my jumpsuit corrected. Luckily as Arthur originally pointed out it could have been a little shorter so he was able to correct the hem and I was able to pick up before my flight the next day. While I appreciate him correcting the issue I'm more concerned that he thought it was acceptable to charge me $85 ($5 MORE than quoted) for something that looked like complete crap (see pictures). I will NOT BE BACK to Chaising Tailor because the service received did not at all live up to the price nor these raving Yelp reviews. read more

I've never reviewed anything on Yelp before, but after this experience, had to let other Yelpers know, especially since all reviews are so glorious. I saw these shining reviews for Arthur and his tailoring, but unfortunately this lead to a huge disappointment and waste of time. The first problem is that there is no storefront, so you cannot get in, say, if you needed to pick up whatever you were having tailored and no one happened to answer you pressing the buzzer. (You wouldn't know which buzzer to press anyway). Second problem was that Arthur neglected the appointment we had setup, so I wasted time outside of the "shop" buzzing the buzzer, calling, etc. to no avail... I hope that this was just a one time thing, since all the other reviews are so stellar, though I have yet to receive an explanation phone call from Mr. Arthur. read more

The experience overall was rude, obnoxious, and uncomfortable. The mans demeanor was cold and nasty as well. I needed a dress altered and went in a week and a half prior. They needed a deposit and then called me the next day to give me the $120 price of what it would cost. More than half the cost of the dress itself. And said it would be ready in time. Never did he say a time of when I should or could come back to pick it up. Only a day. I called a week later and was told, we don't like people here after 7pm. So now I had to go the next day. I came the next day and put the dress on and he created a whole new style of dress. Nothing looked like what we said needed to be done and there were pleats and/or rouging added to the bust of which was not there at all. Nor did I say I wanted that in the bust. In addition the material of the dress is not meant to be pleated. I was so upset and now with 2 days away What was I to do?! He was SO RUDE IT WAS DISGUSTING!!!! Saying I asked for the dress to be like that! I came in to pull the whole bust in, and he left it loose and added pleats! Then was rude and nasty to me because I was just in such shock at what he did. NEVER EVER WOULD I GO BACK OR RECOMMEND THIS tailor to ANYONE. And to charge $120 for your irresponsible work of which nothing was communicated to me. I went to a little old lady a few hours later to fix it. Her immediate response was the pleats should not be there and he cut from the wrong place. She fixed the whole dress the best she could and charged me $20! Trust me this guys is a douche bag and a rip off if you ask me! read more

Arthur is an old-fashioned professional of the highest order, an artist (he's actually a visual artist, but I meant as a tailor)...he's a real old school New York guy who takes tons of pride in his craft and delivers reliably and fairly priced. How do I even begin with this? Aside from Arthur's mastery tailoring skills, it is just a treat to visit him every time. He is the gem of gems. He's so kind, so generous and so handsome. I'll bring him 15 pieces and walk away that day with 5 that he just fixes up right then and there. We'll chat about fashion, the neighborhood, kitties and parties. We'll listen to some pre-revolutionary Iranian pop on the record player. We'll drink delicious coffee. He'll be sewing, I'll be prancing around the studio. And then, when I go back to pick up what I've dropped off (always with more to be altered) I'll walk away with a whole new old wardrobe. He should charge a thousand dollars for every piece of clothing that he fixes - it would be worth it. There is nothing he cannot do..the simplest fixer uppers to reorganizing an entire seersucker dress. One time, the mean streets of New York attacked my down winter coat. Arthur stitched it up in a matter of seconds and I rode away into the night as warm as can be. He will save you - you just have to want to be saved. read more

Arthur altered a tux that I bought online for cheap with extreme precision and exactly to my liking. In the end, it looked nothing like a cheap tux! The turnaround time was amazing, and the prices are affordable - certainly worth it, given the quality of work. Brought in a pair of selvedge denim jeans with a wash I loved, but a flared leg profile I wasn't too crazy about. Arthur tapered them for me, expertly and promptly, and I haven't really taken them off since. The first night I wore them I got my ass caressed three different times at a dinner party. My experience with the lovely people at Chasing Tailor was nothing short of fantastic. This duo knows how to mend, sew, improvise, and create anything. They were able to fully repair a vintage fur (despite not being furriers) and a delicate, vintage homemade dress, even authoritatively confirming that it was made with vintage Missoni fabric. I plan on going back regularly, as no alteration or project is too great or too small. In terms of design-meets-tailoring, you cannot find better quality or price points in any of the five boroughs. Even their Williamsburg/Bushwick atelier is charming. Call them before they become famous. read more

Arthur is simply THE BEST. The man has an eye for fabric, style and fit that is uncommon amongst tailors. He understands style and fit beyond the regular. I had a "made to measure" suit that was made by an English tailor about 4 years ago. In my English tailor's words "I will make this very Saville Row style." Arthur takes ONE knowing glance at the suit and says "this cut is very Saville Row style with the full skirt and all." Wow. He knows things like that. I needed the suit to look more modern and stage ready as I needed the suit for a performance with my band. Arthur says "What instrument do you play?" I say "Piano." He says, "Okay. So you will be sitting down with it unbuttoned most of the time?" He was planning the alterations around the use of the suit. He suggested bringing the length of the coat up and taking in the waist and skirt. The best part. He was leaving on a trip and I needed the suit for the gig and schedules were not lining up. I don't know how he did it, but I got it the next day. I would say this was an extreme case and I would never expect that kind of turnaround again, but it is a testament to his customer service. I do not care how much he charges, although it is reasonable. I have complete and utter confidence on his work. He made a suit I never really liked into one of my favorite wardrobe pieces. Everyone at the performance gave me compliments on the suit. I wish he could make everything I own. In short, I have found my tailor. Everything from here on out goes to Arthur that needs alteration. For that matter, the next time I can afford something made, I will also call Arthur. read more

I purchased a vintage dress from Ebay and it ended up being a bit small across my back. Arthur was able to use excess fabric from the wide hem to alter the back so that it now fits perfectly! Didn't realize going to the Tailor could be so cool. After making an appointment over the phone I arrived to a loft with black and white paintings of glam stars like Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Taylor and such, and a mix of Euro-pop, Brazilian and American tunes from the sixties, I felt totally at ease where as usually I cant wait to get my clothes dropped off and be gone. Arthur, the main guy there is knowledgeable, and eloquent, he explained the options I had after hearing what I wanted done. A broken zipper replaced in a dress, jeans taken in, in the waist and legs, a few hems and sleeves taken up on a jacket all were done and delivered back to my apartment in three days. The fact that there was no communication problems was pretty awesome, and Arthur obviously loves clothes and making people look good in them! First of all, I found Arthur here on Yelp. I read all of the posted comments here and I have to say what made me choose him were the NEGATIVE ONES. I read Arthur's responses to them and thought to myself, That is a guy I would like to work with. It's so funny how those negative posts actually helped get him some work. Regardless, Arthur is fantastic. I asked him to alter three shirts for me and he did them perfectly. They look great. And he did them in a week. Fast, good and inexpensive. You almost never get all three of those things. But more than that, Arthur's customer service is unmatched. I first met with him when I stopped by his shop - which I didn't know I shouldn't do. You're supposed to make an appointment. My bad. Anyway, he was there (lucky for me) and was very kind and completely welcoming. He told me the alterations would take a week and exactly one week later, he sends me a text to say the shirts are ready. We scheduled an appointment (I learned my lesson) and agreed upon a time for me to come to his shop to pick them up. Later that day, Arthur told me he was running behind schedule and asked if we could push the meeting. I couldn't for reasons I won't explain here, so I said we would need to reschedule. Instead, Arthur offered to drive the garments to my apartment later that evening, which was not an easy task. I'm in Cobble Hill; he's in Bushwick. I accepted his offer. He dropped them off, apologized for having to reschedule, and I couldn't have been more pleased. I love New York and believe it is a friendly, welcoming city of smart entrepreneurs, but I Arthur is the case study for how to treat customers.
