We had reservations and I knew we were in trouble when he asked the Manager "How are you?" And he barely had the will or strength to say " Ok! " Having lived in Italy I know authentic Italian food and well this restaurant is 60% there. We ordered Zucchini Flowers as our appetizer and well they served them in a red sauce loaded with cheese. This in itself is sinful as they are to be battered and lightly fried as their amazing flavor and aroma is such a rare delicacy, simply prepared to really experience their unique flavor. Our main courses were good but served cold, but who wanted to ask for them to be reheated? Not I as the restaurant became louder and louder And all I wanted to do was parachute back ti our Emerson Inn. Overall great experience. Waitress was very nice, we weren't rushed at all through appetizers, dinner, drinks and dessert. The menu is set up in a unique way, but the waitress was very helpful. Love that they have specials. I ordered from the regular menu. The arancini was great, the oysters were very fresh, and the calamari was crispy and the perfect amount of heat. Many locals love(d?) this place, but it seems to be struggling post-pandemic. We had a disastrous meal here, I think due to staffing problems and catching them on an off day. The owners need to manage it much more closely. So many people have told us that it is one of their favorite places, and we hope that they get back on their heels soon. We've been going to Tonno since its opening here in Gloucester, MA. Well it seems to. get better and better. On Monday, April 4 we had an outstanding feast. Starting with the Antipasto Board, Cherry Stone Clams and the Shrimp was a great way to start off the evening. The complimentary bread was amongst the best bread we've ever had dining out. The Caesar salad was also good. The Spaghetti, the Tagliatelle, the grilled swordfish and the veal Milanese main courses were incredibly well done and quite delicious! Finishing with a tiramisu made the evening a roaring success. Let me point out that the service was outstanding from beginning to end. Courteous, caring and very professional. Don't bother making a reservation. We made one got there on time, and while they continued to seat 4 other couples, they kept making completely different reasons why could't seat us. First it was a table was not free, while they were seating other couples. And then it was the table was being cleaned. Finally it suddenly became 15 min that they were looking for a quiet table for us. Lies come naturally. Clearly they were over booked and lied to cover up. Totally unacceptable. We finally left after having waited 20 min, and will never go back after 10 years of being regular customers. Over rated food, and exceptionally poor customer service !! the vibe is good, the servers are nice, but the food is not worth the price at all. They tout and charge high prices for "homemade pasta" but it's obviously the boxed stuff so their profit margins must be insane. We got the "orecchiette" but was not really orecchiette. It looked like shells you get in a velveeta mac and cheese box and to add insult to injury most of our pasta was broken and the sauce was very watery. First time at this restaurant and definitely would return. Our waitress Nicole was not only friendly but efficient and very pleasant to deal with.I had a pistachio martini which was excellent and my husband had a dark and Dark at stormy which was prepared correctly. I had a delicious dinner of the veal chop which was tender juicy and cooked to perfection while while my husbands cioppino was perfect. Ending the meal with a strawberry cake and cappuccino put the finishing touches on our experience there. Atmosphere is very nice. You could wear jeans or get dressed up. Food is the best in Gloucester. Simple, fresh seafood. Italian dishes done right- very little ingredients. Everything was very well seasoned and prepared. We had the Wellfleet oysters- always great. The tuna tartare was out of this world- so fresh and flavorful. Tuna belly app was AMAZING. Tuna entree, again such fresh tuna. I wouldn't go anywhere else for tuna. Friend had the Fra diavlo, shrimp was cooked perfectly, sauce - amazing. Again, all simple, fresh ingredients PERFECTLY prepared. Striped bass special with grilled corn was delicate and flavorful. This is by far, my new favorite restaurant in Gloucester. Oh, and their wine list is amazing!! So many Italian wines, divided up my region. And finally, the Tiramisu was some of the best I've had. It's my favorite, and I'm picky with it. My partner and I had a great experience at Tonno for dinner last night. We showed up early for our 9pm reservation, though the hostess was super sweet and accommodating and was able to seat us at our preferred table within minutes. Andrew was a great server, he was totally on top of everything, including water refills, despite the restaurant being completely packed. Oysters were delish and the arancini were incredible! We also enjoyed the stuffed zucchini flower special (though this portion was very small, I've never seen only two flowers before, typically 4+ in an order), along with the crab cake. If I had one complaint, the risotto was pretty bland, but it was edible when paired with the crab cake in the same bite. Will definitely be back after a beach day in the future! read more

I had my (surprise to my fiancé) engagement party at Tonno. I worked extremely close with Joe, the general manager who not only helped me coordinate a special menu, but catered to last minute changes, and arrivals. I had 25 family and friends come from all over, and every single one of them said it was some of the best food, and service they've ever had. I highly recommend Tonno to anyone looking to celebrate, or even have a nice meal and drink on a weeknight. We will be going back any time we're in the area! read more

We were promptly seated and given water, bread, and drinks. Our waiter was friendly and the manager was nice too. Food: Really delicious. I wanted to try much more than I did so I'll be back. The menu was really great. Arancini: really great, crisp, not soggy or mushy but perfect! Hamachi crudo: this had pea shoots and flakey salt... It was like a pure bite of freshness and springtime. Highly recommended. Tuna (tonno) with white beans: when it arrived u thought it might be over cooked, but cutting into it it was delicious and rare! A giant portion. My mom had the scallop dish and she loved it. I had a martini and it was really great. Ambience: A tad loud. I noticed they put some some panels into the ceiling but they might need to do more. At a table for two I had a hard time hearing my mom talk. The bar was cute, the place settings were nice, the ladies room was a touch odd--you almost seemed to leave the restaurant and go down a hall to get there. read more

So, we made reservations for last night and although we were promptly seated and our waitress was excellent, the food was underwhelming.
