The best bolognese I've had in years. The halibut special was amazing - a wonderful medley of fall flavors and I would highly recommend. For appetizers, the calamari was great. Two individuals at our table split dishes (tagliatelle and halibut) and our server had them plated on two separate dishes for each person, which made it much easier to share - loved that attention to detail and great service. Ah, Tonno which translates to Tuna in Italian. I bet you did not know that lol! Another restaurant we dined while on vacation. I wish I had better news for this one but I will say my Nebbiolo wine was superb and I did enjoy the salad. Oh and the ambiance was also quite nice! Overall, this Italian restaurant is no North End, but I heard their head Chef left to open up a nearby restaurant so some locals mentioned the quality went down. I guess we'll see! We wanted to like it here, but after ordering their Chicken Parmigiana and having to send it back because it was overcooked...Mama Mia! My grandmother would be very upset! And don't get me started on the sauce. I mean c'mon how hard can it be. Ugh! The only could thing to come out of this was the service, which was quite impeccable and it was quite busy for a Monday night. Everything was a treat! Ken our waiter so very polite , knowledgeable and pleasant. Not to mention delightful and sweetly cute. The food outstanding but we were full after the antipasto which was enormous. The bread fresh and my veal delicious as was husband's salmon. We had to choke down our cannolis because we were so full but couldn't leave without trying one or two but worth every bite! The wife was away tonight so off to Tonnos. Sat at the bar for $1.00 oysters (24) and the grilled octopus which was spectacular. My vodka martini was made perfectly as always. Food is always amazing. The staff is fantastic fantastic. I'm blanking on the names but there are two servers/ bartenders who are incredible. Ambience is dim and the crowd is lively but orderly. We sat at the bar and had a great time, the drinks are delicious and they serve one of the crispest Maine lunch beers I've had in a while. The food is of course impeccable. We wanted to eat on the earlier side and arrived around 5pm so we were seated right away and it was very quiet Our waitress was lovely but I unfortunately don't remember her name. She gave us a lot of time to look through the menu and make decisions. They have a decent sized menu and options for daily specials as well The complimentary focaccia and oil they bring you is delicious. My partner had an espresso martini I forgot to get a photo of but she loved it and I had the Italian 75 spritz which was nice also For food she got the chicken parm. She said it was one of the best she's had. The piece of chicken was gigantic, the sauce was flavorful and the pasta was cooked perfectly though we agreed for both our dishes they could've included more pasta I chose one of the specials, the lobster and butternut squash with rigatoni. It was absolutely delicious! The lobster was fresh and they give you a decent amount and the butternut squash was so flavorful. I would 100% get this dish again and I'll probably be thinking about it for awhile We didn't get dessert because we had cupcakes waiting for us back home. It was my first time here. My Niece made reservations for our family reunion that was forty years overdue. When I arrived I found there was a mixup in our reservations and management took every step to accommodate the ten of us. The establishment was spotless. The service was fantastic. The seafood platter appetizer was a hit for my team as it offered various arrangements of seafood that we could try without having to order too many dishes. The seafood was fresh and tasty. Had another excellent dinner at Tonno. Tuna Crudo and Filet were highlights, as was flourless chocolate cake dessert - all were expertly prepared and presented! Only negative - they recently completed the second floor space, which is where we were seated. Very much geared as an event/banquette space (and I think would excellent for that) but doesn't have anywhere near the warmth and vibe of the original downstairs space. Very high ceilings, harsh cool-temperature lighting. The LED lights behind the bar need some kind of light deflector so the individual bulbs aren't visible, was really unpleasant from my view. Additionally waitstaff carries plates up and down the stairs, I ran into this twice and it was a little awkward. So would recommend requesting downstairs if these factors matter to you. The wife and I had eaten at Tonno in Wakefield many times and go back time and time again because we just love the food, drinks and atmosphere with friends. The restaurant is very nice, clean and has a really good vibe. The drinks are really good and the food is wonderful. We always get the arancini and the meatballs to start and have tried most of the Primi on the menu. Entrees (Secondi) are excellent and we recommend any of them. One of my favorites is the grilled bone in ribeye and the wife loves the roasted salmon and swordfish. Great place to go with friends and enjoy the company your with. Never felt pressure to leave and usually close the place down. Staff is phenomenal and lots of parking in the area. We will certainly go back to the Gloucester location again and can't wait! read more

Went out with friends who had a reservation for us, we ended up waiting about 10 minutes anyways but hey it's a Saturday night. The server was helpful and had good conversations with us. I got a glass of wine and the rest of table got drinks as well and they were all well crafted. Our server helped us with the menu and made great suggestions. We absolutely love Tonno -- it's one of our favorite restaurants in Gloucester, and we're so excited when Anthony Caturano, Owner/Chef announced his upcoming expansion upstairs for private dining and special events! We've been regulars for years and have also used their catering for office functions, which have always been top notch. Most recently, we hosted a small home gathering to watch the Greasy Pole and wanted to focus on enjoying time with friends. Tonno's catering was the perfect solution. Joe and Ashley were amazing -- they helped us select the right amount and mix of food, and their guidance was spot-on. Everything was seamless from start to finish. When I arrived for pickup, I was warmly greeted by two runners who loaded everything right into my car. The food was beautifully and securely packaged, still hot, and thoughtfully wrapped to keep it that way -- a small detail that made a big difference. As for the food? Absolutely delicious! From their signature bolognese with homemade shortcut rigatoni, to the grilled octopus, breaded chicken cutlets, meatballs, fresh salad, and garlic bread -- there wasn't a bite left. Sister restaurant to an Italian spot in the north end, we came in for a late Saturday night dinner in March. The place was still full with great vibes and our waitress helped us plan out the perfect meal (as did our table neighbors haha). Comes with bread and we ordered the calamari as an app--of note it does not come with sauce (a little strange) so our waitress recommended the marinara sauce which MADE the dish for an extra $3. Served with delish roasted red peppers. We also got the chicken parm and asked for bolognese sauce for the pasta side it comes with (no additional charge) which !hot take! we generally felt was a little over hyped. I came here to sample their Sunday Sauce spaghetti with meatball and sausage. I'd read some good reviews and having been raised in an Italian household with my mother's Sunday sauce of meatballs, sausage or bracciole, I decided to put it to the test. I was extremely pleasantly surprised at how authentic it is. Highly recommend! Very good service as well. Might drive down from Portsmouth just to try some other items on the menu. read more

We went to Gloucester on 4th of July to tour the Hammond castle. We ended up at Tonno's afterwards since it was pretty much the only restaurant opened that evening. The place was packed but they still managed to accommodate our party of five. The food was very good! Everything tasted nice and fresh, and delicious! My mom got the Boneless Half Chicken, Garlic Pan Sauce & Roasted Potato which was espectacular- the sauce really makes the dish and the chicken was tenter and flavorful. My aunt got the Chicken Milanese, Arugula Salad, Tomato, Cucumber dish was also very good. The chicken was cooked to perfection. My sister got a Caesar salad with salmon. The salmon was perfect and a nice size. I got the pasta special with lobster which did not disappoint! It was creamy, flavorful and good a good amount of fresh lobster chunks! We also tried the cocktails which were very nice. The service was 5 stars. Even with a full house, our server was very attentive and the food came out timely. Everyone was very friendly and you could tell stay on top of everything. I would definitely recommend! I'm from Virginia but if ever in the area again, I would go back. read more

We are locals, and tire easily of the typical New England fried seafood fare that is seemingly everywhere on Cape Ann. Special occasions almost always require a ressie at Tonno's in Gloucester. Varied menu, with very unique offerings. Had a birthday celebration last night. Always have to order the $1 oysters before 5 pm, along with a few other half price offerings. Oysters are just amazing, husband got the crispy shrimp which he said was just 'good'. He got the tuna seared, and rated A. We had the anchovy antipasti on little toasts, - B. My tuna tartare with pesto on toasts was A+. Dessert was a bread pudding with raspberries. - B. Needed more custard sauce, raspberries and less bread. Overall experience was B+...but our server, Lindsay, was A++++ ! So helpful and knowledgeable of the menu items. We will be back, of course. Fantastic choice for dining on Cape Ann. read more

We have ordered pickup a number of times from Tonno when staying in Gloucester and decided to try it for dinner on a Monday night. Our reservation was early and the restaurant had a good crowd though not as busy as when we left. We opted for indoor seating though they have a nice spacious outdoor coveted area. Indoors is bright, understated but nicely decorated: modern with two rooms with exposed brick. Our waitress was excellent: friendly and attentive but not overly so. Small basket of ciabatta and focaccia served with olive oil was very good. Our cocktails were superb. We had ordered their flatbread in a recent pickup order and it was excellent so decided to start with this. In the past, we have had the meatball app, garlic bread and arancini and all were excellent. Salad options are few and the Caesar was just average with romaine served entirely too large. I would not reorder. Our entrees were surprisingly disappointing. It was not that busy so it was surprising that both were overcooked. I'm not sure how chicken parm gets overcooked in a popular Italian restaurant but it was. Great potential and the perfect size but the chicken was dry and not tender. The same with my husband's pork chop entree. Both were disappointing after a great start and our prior experiences here. Any restaurant can have an off night so I'll chalk it up to that. It was just surprising after our prior experiences ordering takeout. We enjoyed dining inside and our waitress was great but I think in the future, we will stick with apps and some awesome drinks at the bar. read more

amazing place! came here for dinner and we just made it about 10 minutes before their "happy hour" dinner appetizers closed. Me and my mother split the roasted figs which was delicious and only $6 during that hour, and my aunt who was super hungry and didn't eat lunch- had the mussels, tuna tartare tacos, and 3 more mussels and she said it was amazing! Then for an entree I split the roasted salmon with my mother (we were splitting because we were both getting dessert) and that was delicious as well! My aunt and my mother got the flourless chocolate cake and I got the cheesecake. They both said it really hit their cravings and mine was mouthwatering. Wow! A friend recommended Tonno and we finally got there last night. Both food and service were impeccable, and the decor was attractive. We shared an antipasto which was excellent and very large; then hubs got cioppino and I got veal saltimbocca. Portions very generous, so we took a lot home. Oh, and the cocktails and complimentary focaccia were top-notch, too. Parking seemed a bit limited; we lucked into a space adjacent to the restaurant, but I don't know how much else there was.
