    Bread Service

What a great date night option while we were in Newburyport! I'm a sucker for homemade pasta so we made sure to make reservations ahead of time as they fill up quickly! Just note that the reservations are time limited - for 2 people they give you an hour, we did our homework and made sure to know exactly what we wanted prior to going. The place is small and they try to maximize every spot so you might feel a tad bit cramped. We were seated at a high top table, not ideal but it had to suffice. Our server was excellent - all smiles and super friendly as well as the front of house. We put in our drink and entree orders promptly - we were asked if we wanted bread (I didn't realize it was not complimentary, $5 for the bread and oil). But it was absolutely delicious and worth the $5. The meals came out FAST and they were piping hot! I went with the Chicken Vodka. It was cooked nicely and the pasta was perfect. Although the vodka sauce was good - it isn't the best I've had. I actually preferred the mister's red sauce better. Just note the place does not offer dessert (prob to make the reservations more efficient) but there are a few ice cream shops open late for those sweet cravings - which is what we did after our meal. We really did enjoy our meal and I think our server was impressed that we were as quick as we were with our time there. We didn't want to be the reason there's a holdup with the next reservation so although we didn't feel rushed - we also went in with a plan already. If in the area - we would def come back.

Spaghetti and meatballs. Veal parm with fusilli. - A person is using tongs to hold a slice of pizza on a white plate at a restaurant bar with a polished granite countertop. The plate has remnants of pizza sauce and cheese. There are drinking glasses, a white square plate, and bar tools in the background. The setting appears to be a casual dining environment with a busy bar area.

Had a perfect meal today at Carmine's. My wife had the classic spaghetti and meatballs. Meatballs were soft, moist and delicious. I had veal parm and fusilli. The sauce was great a little tangy with crushed red pepper. The veal cutlet was cooked perfectly. Love this place. Wait staff were attentive and funny.

No surprise, the owner is related to Carmelina's in the north end because the food was equally divine here! They know flavors!! The food was phenomenal. I really enjoyed my veal and vodka sauce this mussels and beet salad. Everything was first class. Carmine is small, but I had a very early reservation and did not feel rushed and enjoyed my meal. My husband ordered the short rib and that was delicious! Will come back here again!

WOW what an amazing meal we had here. My new favorite Italian restaurant. Started with mussels in the wine sauce and Caprese salad. Mussels were cooking perfect and the sauce OMG get extra bread to dip in that. The pasta dishes were delicious as were the cocktails. Service also 5/5. Can't wait to go back. They don't have dessert but do yourself a favor and get an espresso martini - best I've ever had.

The good, the bad & the ugly The good - second time at Carmine with a couple who go semi-regular. Lively spot with a rough 90-minute reservation expectation. Drinks were got, appetizers of mussels & meatballs were great. Server recommended a good bottle of Cabernet. Braised Rib, Chix Parm & the Veal special were solid. The bad - 10 minutes into the appetizers, we were rapidly presented with two out of our four entrees (veal & chix parm). The food runner stood as we juggled plates & consolidated items to allow him to drop off. It took an additional 5 minutes or so for the other two entrees (ribs & clams) to appear, so clearly the timing was off somewhere. We joked that we may have gotten another tables dinner. My wife got the $36 clam special but after a taste or two, she said it was very salty. The other couple tried it & agreed. For probably only the third time in 28 years of knowing her, my wife told the server that she couldn't eat her meal & he offered to have it remade. My wife said the taste had put her off the dish & wanted the Veal special as an alternative. By the time the alternate came, us three had basically finished up, so a box & the bill was asked for. The $36 overly salted clams remained on the bill. We asked the server why so, and if he could remove it. He said he couldn't as my wife had refused to allow them to remake the overly salted clams & had ordered the alternate veal dinner but retreated to ask the chef. The ugly - Our server didn't come back, but the 'manager' came over asking what the issue was. We restated ours & he basically told us that if the restaurant wasn't allowed to remake the overly salted clams, we must pay for the inedible salted clams. Having now spent over $400 on a couple's dinner, we asked for a revised bill but were refused. At no time was the typical comp in a similar situation or an apology offered, nor an attempt made to placate the situation. Customer service was clearly not on top of the mind as the conversation became heated & loud. If it is indeed restaurant policy to remake a dish the customer feels they cannot eat due to its taste, the server should have been crystal clear on this $36 dish. Knowing that, my wife most likely would have not eaten at that point. Food runners should know to peak at a table before dropping entrees, clear off apps etc. The manager needs some hospitality classes & learn to have some humility while dealing with customers. Instead of the 'like it or leave' attitude, Google the blameless apology. Our last time eating there.

A street scene during sunset in a small town, with a church steeple visible in the background. The street has parked cars, pedestrians walking, and storefronts with illuminated signs. Outdoor seating with umbrellas is present, and potted plants decorate the sidewalk. The sky is partly cloudy with a warm glow from the setting sun.

How good is this place? So good we came back 2 nights in a row. I've been reviewing Italian restaurants for years, this might be the best I've ever reviewed. Photos from back to back nights. Started with the garlic shrimp and bread served in the pan. Simply out of this world. Pasta was epic. We had catchio pepe and rigatoni Gorgonzola . Reservations are recommended but the second we eat at the bar. Bartender was knowledgeable and friendly our waiter from the night before recognized us from the night before and stoped by to say hi. So genuine "so glad you came back to visit us". All the staff acted like owners making sure everything was special for their guests. We enjoyed sitting at the bar the second night to watch the action in the kitchen. Tight quarters with bursts of flames. Amazing

Arugula salad with grilled shrimp - A close-up of a green arugula salad in a white bowl, garnished with shaved cheese and drizzled with balsamic glaze. The salad is served at Carmine, an Italian restaurant featuring exposed brick and vintage decor, offering traditional Italian, Sicilian, and Mediterranean dishes.

Beautiful indoor atmosphere and patio dining. We got in with no reservation at 5 but they get busy real fast so reservations after 6 are needed. Our server was great and kept up with drinks and checking in. The food was delicious, very fresh and clean. They do lunch on Saturdays but need reservations to go. Highly recommend

crazy chicken alfredo - A white plate contains a serving of fettuccine pasta coated in Alfredo sauce, topped with pieces of chicken, tomatoes, and vegetables. The dish appears creamy and rich, with a fork resting on the side of the plate. The setting includes a wooden table, a glass of wine, and a glass of soda in the background, indicating a dining experience at a restaurant.

I recently went to Carmelita's for the first time and LOVED it. When I heard Carmine opened in Newburyport, I knew I had to check it out. My family and I went for my mom's birthday and we had a great time! Everyone loved their food, especially the chicken parm and penne alla vodka. The crazy chicken alfredo was really good, but not quite on Carmelina's level IMO. This is definitely my new go to spot in Newburyport!

We arrived just after our friends who advised they had already ordered their drinks. Our waitress arrived promptly and took our drink order and then vanished. No drinks for quite some time. A manager came over to ask if anybody had visited us, apologized for the delay, and returned with our drinks. I'm estimating it was a bit over 30 minutes or so before drinks arrived. Our waitress did return, apologized and took our food order. I wasn't so sure about ordering sushi, but glad we did. The maki we tried were very good, fresh and beautifully presented. A great start. We switched gears for our entree and went with a parpadelle bolognese. A nice generous portion that was as good as some of the Italian spots in the area. Our friends also enjoyed their dishes. Portions were generous and prices were reasonable. I would easily have given 4 stars, but the service needs improvement. You would need to plan to spend at least a couple of hours for a lunch. In our case it was not a big deal as we were enjoying time with friends, but I can understand the other negative reviews now. We do plan to return to work our way deeper into the menu, and hope they will have more staff to help with the front of the house.

This wasn't our first visit to this place; we had visited once before and sat on the patio (during…read morewinter, so it was sealed up like a cozy igloo). Knowing the drill, we were prepared to valet the car, which is definitely a downside since it slows down the whole getting-in-and-out process. We made our way to the host stand and were greeted warmly. We asked for seating for three (husband, wife, and child) and were led to a table along the outside of the bar. It was a great window seat but definitely on the louder side. Not an issue for us, but if you're bringing someone who's hard of hearing or just doesn't like noise, consider this a heads-up. Our waitress came over to take our drink order immediately, and we placed our food order shortly after. We started with the Brussels sprouts appetizer. I ordered the Poke Bowl, my husband went for the Mac & Cheese, and our son ordered the same from the kids' menu. Drinks took a while to arrive. When the appetizer came, I noticed my utensils were sticky and asked for a new set. This took wayyyyy longer than it should have. She literally went and gathered some drinks from the bar and delivered them before getting me the utensils. The appetizer was tasty but lacked the sriracha kick we expected from the description (though I honestly preferred them this way). Our meals arrived, and I noticed mine was very small but delicious. My husband's dish was missing the chicken and prosciutto and was really dry. Our son's dish had chicken on the side (a good idea) because he didn't like the pasta, calling it "dry and weird" (his words). My husband asked for a side of cheese and the missing chicken and prosciutto. He only got the chicken and cheese (at this point, we let the prosciutto go). We ordered a second round of drinks but should have ordered them as soon as the first round arrived because the meal was pretty much done by the time we got the second round. In the end, we skipped dessert and paid the check. The lackluster personality of our waitress didn't help things. We handed in the valet tag with payment (as instructed) and still waited over 10 minutes for our car by the time we got to the parking lot. Overall, this place has promise but still needs some work before it can capitalize on the summer traffic. If they can't figure it out, I fear it won't last like many of their predecessors. Fingers crossed for them because I do think they can be wonderful!

We had great service from our waitress, and even met the very pleasant owner/hostess who told us a bit more about the restaurant, menu and live music options. We did not get a chance to see the upstairs dining room, but the main floor was very nice, warm and cozy. The menu leans Thai, but I would say the is really Pan Asian. Food was served promptly, hot and delicious. I really enjoyed the Thai lettuce wraps, fresh, clean and delicious. The plate was served with just the right amount of chicken to lettuce ratio. It seems some restaurants struggle getting the ratio right, forcing you to ask for more lettuce, crackers, etc... Not here. We also enjoyed the Golden Bags small plate, which were crispy and delicious. Red Curry main entree was quite good. Heavy on vegetables with a thick red coconut curry. We saved room for dessert, and chose the Chocolate Roti. Perhaps a little bit of a misnomer, as it was two tasty roti filled with Nutella, and served with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Sort of like an ice cream sundae. While the menu is quite clear about it, I envisioned something more chocolatey. All good! Cocktails were also creative and delicious. We will definitely return and work our way deeper into the menu.
