This place is not what it used to be... The head Maitre D is oblivious to the seated diners as he rushes down the aisles ignoring everyone. Waitress was very intimidating standing over you when presenting the check with tip recommendations of 25%, 20%, 18%. (what happened to 15%, 18%, 20%). The salmon dinner was barely cooked, on top of some greasy pilaf rice. It did not include any vegetables. read more

Excellent low cost parking available on site, this location is on the Merrimack River front. Order was taken quickly, accurately we had the Nebbiolo Italian red wine very light Pinot noir type, the clam chowder was light on salt so that you can add at table if you so desire, half Caesar salad & large portion of Baked Haddock w spinach & garnised top very good tasting. The Black Cow is a good restaurant, but there are better in Newburyport. We used to dine here more frequently when they were situated on the water, but tried them once after the move and was not impressed. We were back at a friends request and glad we tried it. We had pleasant service, delicious cocktails and the food arrived from the kitchen promptly and hot. The food itself was quite unremarkable however. Nothing bad, just OK. The meatball appetizer had tasty meatballs, but was served with a pesto sauce that I did not think paired well. It also came with focaccia, which was nice add, but it was cold, hard and well not great. I'm not a huge steak fan, but do love a good burger. Once again the burger was just OK. It had some interesting add ons, like cajun onions, but the bacon was a fail. Little chopped pieces of woefully underdone and barely cooked bacon pieces. It's like eating fat. No savory bacon flavor and rubbery texture. I just don't like bacon that is barely cooked. We tried the peanut butter/chocolate cake for dessert which was nice. Anything with peanut butter an chocolate is a win for me. Not sure it was made in house, but decent enough. Accommodated 11 people easily with a reservation. Service was excellent and friendly. Did was delicious. I recommend the sushi!

The people who work here know what they're doing. It was very crowded but we put our number down, chilled outside across the street and got a call about 15-20 minutes later. We were taken to the outdoor patio on the second floor and it was a bit sunny to not have the patio umbrellas open but it's alright if you have sunglasses. The servers and hosts were great and the food was absolutely spectacular. I got the short rib bolognese. Besides a few fatty pieces that were inedible, the short rib was perfectly tender and went so well with the fresh pappardelle and Bolognese. I usually don't like meat with pasta or short rib on top of dishes like short rib mac and cheese or grilled cheese, but this was an exceptional preparation and went so well with the dish. The Black Cow is one of me and my wife's favorite restaurants in Newburyport or anywhere. Although the name strikes you as a steak-forward restaurant, the biggest standout here is their sushi menu. I get sushi everywhere, and nothing beats the quality and finesse that goes into every roll that comes out of that cool sushi boat in the middle of the restaurant. In particular we love the shrimp tempura roll, which has just the softest, most ripe avocado rolled around the rice and crispy tempura shrimp. Everything we've tried from the menu has been excellent, but we keep going back for the cola-marinated steak tips, which are perfectly tender and delicious. The menu recently changed which improved my perception of their cocktail offering. For example, I just had a Negroni Bianca that was very memorable. The service is always good. The ambiance is higher end. If only it were easier to park. My only other critique would be that Black Cow needs a better dessert menu. It's like 4-5 different cakes. But if you're not someone who likes cake or in the mood for cake, there's nothing for you to have. read more

Excellent beer selection but quite expensive. They typically have about 40 on tap. I paid $12 for an 11 oz pour of Hill Farmstead Edward. It was damn good though. The sushi is good, not great. But is was ridiculously overpriced, average is about $25. The 2 rolls in my attached pic were $50. The Veal Milanese was like rubber. It was so tough that I needed a steak knife to saw through it. It was loaded with chopped garlic that wasn't sufficiently cooked so it was bitter and unpleasant. A $30 waste. The tall blonde hostess was the most unpleasant person I've met in quite a while. We almost u-turned out of there after dealiywith her attitude. The rest of the staff was pleasant. 2 rolls, one pasta entree, and one 11oz beer was over $100. read more

We went there for my son's birthday tonight 1/7/26, this dinner was so disappointing. We had apps that were ok, frankly I could barely choke down the crab cakes, I picked at one & just couldn't face the second, they were so overloaded with old bay, it was difficult to know what I was eating, the texture was pure mush, The calamari was nicely done, surprisingly good GF batter, BUT the nice crispy texture was nearly destroyed with sauce squirts all over it, instead of on the side for dipping ( IF YOU WANT TO DIP )!!! My son had to use a napkin to wipe it off on the pieces that had less on them. The cup of clam chowder was ok. The $69 steak was ok, the sides were terrible, the asparagus tasted like char & nothing else, even though there was not a char on them, the (smashed) haha BUT BAKED potato was way undercooked, HOW CAN A RESTAURANT NOT BAKE A POTATO PROPERLY IS BEYOND WORDS! When we asked our server Stephanie to bring back the undercooked potato, she sent her manager, he came over already charged up in defense mode trying to argue the difference between a baked and a smashed potato haha , so ridiculous it was raw either way, & my husband whom is a retired chef from the best 2 restaurants on the north shore, was dumbfounded by the manager trying to excuse a raw potato on a $69 plate! Believe me it's not the price, it's what they're trying to send over for it! Then there's the Greek salad, I was trying to keep it safe by ordering that, it was SOAKED in salad dressing and had artichoke in it, ok not trad but I like artichokes, just not the type from a can that tastes like nothing but the can, use jarred at least , when I told our server I couldn't eat it because of it being SOAKED in dressing, I got attitude and she said the manager would be back , then she tried to argue with me that I never said anything about it when she asked how it was, the FACT is she never asked me how MY food was, I was waiting for her to, but she never did, instead I had to call her over and tell her, it was inedible due to being SOAKED, luckily the California roll my son ordered was pretty good, the fact that our LEGITIMATE complaints drew such defensive attitude and arguing back with us, was a terrible way to celebrate a cancer survivor's birthday ( we hope for many more ) and having to sit and wait for my husband to eat his dinner, it took a long time to "fix" a RAW potato smashed baked or whatever, while my son and I waited and watched him eat solo, when I saw the salad I WAS UNABLE TO EAT, was still on the bill, same attitude and having to wait for the manager again with his angry face on, did take it off, it was the right thing to do, would've been much better with a pleasant demeanor ( even if it was faked ) rather than the steam coming from his ears! We came to Newburyport for a day trip and needed a meal before we headed for the commuter. The wait was an hour but luckily they have enough seats for 4 at a bar area upstairs. The space itself is really big with an upper outdoor area with a bar that spans from the inside and out as well as the downstairs dining area which looked mainly inside. Our server who also seemed like one of the heads of the bar area was really nice! I could tell they were really busy and he was running all over the place but every interaction I had with him was very sincere and enjoyable. I ordered the rock and roll sushi which was so yummy! I kind of wish I have ordered more rolls but I was kind of in a rush because my train was leaving soon. I also ordered three of the daily oysters and unfortunately it took so long for some reason for them to bring out but the gentleman kept apologizing about it. The location here is the big draw. We were seated pretty quickly on a Sunday lunchtime, right as soon as it opened. We did have a reservation, and I'm glad because the place filled up very fast after we arrived. Unfortunately, the service let things down for us. Our server kept disappearing for ages and we ended up waiting too long for sauces and drink refills. The short rib bolognese was not as great as I'd hoped it would be for the price; it had a strange cheesy acidic taste that was offputting. Our table looked out ever the downtown area. Our waitress was prompt and efficient. My daughter ordered a burger. My husband and I each had sushi and I had a small Pear Salad. My husband had a beer as well. The Pear Salad was one of the best salads I ever had. There was a hint of smokiness in the stressing paired with goat cheese was simple delish. Went to their new location right next to their old one . I had my parents 50th wedding anniversary there at the old one many years ago . Was a big success ! The new one which I was not aware had been changed over from the old location was absolutely fantastic. We went at 2 pm for an Easter reservation ! The food was absolutely wonderful ! The service was as good as the food ! We are on the second level ! The place is spotless ! Clean and new ! Our waitress was amazing ! She was right there from beginning to end making sure we had enough water and drinks were full etc ! The kitchen helpers who assisted with the food delivery were fantastic ! They helped the waitress out perfectly! It was very busy as it was Easter ! The food was ordered, muscles. Sushi, which is excellent ! And steak tips and apple filled raviolis and a had a Caesar with chicken tips ! Calamari my son had was excellent ! There was not one thing to complain about. All the other guests around us were getting great service and their food was served very quickly I noticed! The Host and Hostess at the front door greeted us promptly and on our leaving were greeted and thanked for coming. Al I will say is , we will be back ! The new roof top deck looks awesome! I went here with my partner on Memorial Day around 8pm, so parking was free in the adjacent municipal lot and and we were seated and served quickly. The vibe is an elevated sports bar with a wide selection of alcohols available. I didn't take any photos, but judging from older reviews it seems like the chefs have updated they way they compose and present their dishes, as they now look more elegant and are likely more efficient to prep (e.g. using whole fingerling potatoes instead of slicing larger ones into more even sizes saves time). I can't stop thinking about the lamb lollipops. The plate was beautifully streamlined, with a handful of components that worked very well together. The lamb was grilled to the ideal juicy doneness, each piece resting on a dollop of herbed creamy goat cheese mousse. At the base is a pool of cranberry-mint demi glace, which added sweetness and a little acidity to balance the fat in the cheese and lamb. Atop each lollipop was a sensible handful of microgreens that added a grassy, slightly bitter flavor and some crunch. The dish hits so many complimentary flavors and textures at once, and I happily ate my share with my whole face. Similarly, the pistachio crust on the salmon adds an addictive texture and a nutty, slightly sweet, buttery flavor. The sear on the edges of the fish added crispness that contrasted well with the soft interior, which makes up for the absence of crispy salmon skin. The veggies were perfectly done, not too soft or too firm, and everything was appropriately-seasoned. I would have enjoyed having more of the gastrique. The chocolate ganache slice wasn't too sweet, and is an appropriate size for the end of the meal because it's so rich and dense. Of everything I ate, the lamb was my favorite. I could probably finish 3 orders of these by myself. Had I been in the comfort of my own home, I would have licked the plate. My partner is allergic to gluten, and appreciated that everything was clearly labelled on the menu. It's hard to find places with options that are safe for him to eat and delicious, so we'll definitely be back. read more

The fish my sister and I got, was a very small portion, overcooked and crunchy. The 6 skinny pieces of asparagus sitting under it, were overcooked and stringy. The fries were fine, you can't really mess up on fries. I felt ripped off with the price this meal cost compared to what I received. We got a piece of cake to share and the piece was so skinny and small it was barely enough for one person! Embarrassment!! We've dined here dozens of times when they were on the waterfront and at their new location and have never been disappointed! Had lunch there on June 1st and asked to be seated upstairs on their deck. It was the perfect spot for lunch, great staff, beautiful views and most importantly delicious food! My boyfriend and I went on a little date night here and were absolutely blown away by not only the food, gluten-free options, but the service as well. We were able to sit immediately outside and it was a beautiful night. Our server Emily was perfect! She took care of us very well and recommended a lot of things on the menu that were absolutely delicious. She was a great conversationalist and she truly made the night. It was our wedding anniversary and we asked the locals for a special restaurant. The locals told us the Black Cow would be a good choice and had a wonderful menu for lunch and dinner. We decided on an early dinner and were seated upstairs where we could eat inside or outside. It was a little warm outside, so we decided on eating inside in the AC. Our waitress, Michele, was great and the food was hot when served. Our granddaughter had pasta with butter, perfectly cooked and appeased her picky taste buds! My daughter had a Moroccan 1/2 roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and summer veggies (i.e., zucchini, yellow squash and carrots). The sauce tasted of cinnamon and Garam Masala and it was on the sweet side and very tasty. My wife had Twin Lamb chops over mixed vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes with an apple mint gastrique sauce. Very delicious and excellent presentation! Our grandson had ravioli filled with lobster and topped with a split lobster tail and cream sauce. He ate it all and said it was great! My son in law had the Tuna Sashimi with mixed vegetables that melted in your mouth. I had the Haddock stuffed with crab meat with mixed vegetables . It was so good I ate before taking a picture. The mixed ratings throughout my dinner renders this an overall 3 stars, otherwise it would be lower and higher on specifics. For example, I would give the Blue Lemondrop 5 stars as it's quite a tasty treat, and very deserving as being one of their most popular cocktails. However I would give the Grey Whale Coast a 1 star, despite typically enjoying gin-based cocktails. The Crispy Calamari might be one of the best I've ever ordered from any restaurant. Breaded lightly, tasting great with the peppers and tomato. The menu didn't list how many ounces are served on the steak, but the server was very friendly and more than willing to help. However, (I'm not sure if it's a chef policy though I doubt it) I wasn't asked how I wanted my steak. It came out medium. Unfortunately I prefer my steak medium-rare, so I was not able to fully enjoy it. It was seasoned and seared well, and the garlic mashed was good. Perhaps I'll try the sushi next time instead of the meats. It's a very spacious place with two floors and a deck view near the water, so the environment is quite nice. read more
