I've been to Tong Phoon many times over the years and ordered several dishes, which were all fantastic. I decided to try the Shrimp Pad Thai today and WOW!! This dish tasted exactly how I remembered it in some of my favorite Bangkok restaurants that I've been to over the years. I've been to SE Asia many times over the years and will keep going back because of the WOW factor. So, details... the noodles are cooked perfectly. It's soft, but still has a slight crunch to it. The tamarind flavor is bold, but not overpowering. The peanuts, sprouts, chives and all the other ingredients were in the perfect proportion. The shrimp is fresh, crispy externally and tender when you bite down on it. This is by far the best Shrimp Pad Thai that I've had in Rhode Island. If anyone has another suggestion, then please let me hear it! The Thai Iced coffee was also BOMB! A nice caffeine jolt, creamy and not overwhelmingly sweet. I think the restaurant has been purchased and switched ownership, as the restaurant is no longer Tong Phoon. The food quality has taken a hit. I love the spring rolls and for the last few times I've ordered them, they've been small, overcooked until hard, and with minimal veggies in the middle. The prices are higher, the portions are smaller which makes me a little sad. The food has changed quite a bit and not for the better. read more

I really wanted to love this place! It's local and convenient. Stopped by to get a few appetizers to hold me over for dinner and if possible, maybe something for lunch next day. I ordered Beef teriyaki and white rice. Grand total was $16. When I got home and opened my order, I was shocked to see 4-5 thin strips of beef soaking in soy sauce. Best Thai food I've had in Rhode Island so far! The spicy chicken wings were absolutely delicious, smothered in sauce, just the perfect amount of spice, and somehow the coating on the chicken was crispy under the sauce. I really enjoy a zingy pad Thai and I was prepared to be disappointed when it came without a fresh lime wedge to squeeze on top. While I do think I would have enjoyed a fresh lime wedge, the pad Thai didn't actually really need it and had really good balance of flavors. My BF got the drunken noodles (** spice) and it had a good amount of heat. He cleared his plate and said it was probably the best Thai he's had in a while. They have their own small parking lot, which I was surprised about, and there's a decent amount of street parking in front of the restaurant and on the adjacent side streets. read more

Came here for NYE, place wasnt very busy for eat in however a number of folks came for take out. Everything we tried was fantastic- to start we got octopus balls (yum!) and fun taro and thai iced tea. This is arguably the best teas I have ever had! For meals we split the drunken noodles and spicy fried rice (both mild). Both dishes we fantastic! The drunken noodles were exactly what we hoped for, and the spicy rice with calamari was a fun alternative wed never tried but were pleasantly surprised by. Overall great experience, plus we learned they are BYOB. Cant wait to come back! read more

When we lived in California, we got spoiled by having the very best (in our opinion) Thai restaurant in the US. Moving back to MA, it is something that we miss so much. We've had many disappointments so far- until now with Tong Phoon. I can't say that it is as incredibly flavorful as our special place in CA. However for the south coast MA/east Bay RI area I doubt you will find better. The tastes were solid and authentic. Pros: The flavors are worth it! Website allows easy online ordering. Food and restaurant gave off "clean" vibes- the food seemed fresh and well prepared. Some reviews complain about confusion about spiciness levels. I think they've done a good job of clarifying since then. I respect that they say that some dishes are not able to be made not at all spicy- it means they care about the results and aren't just going to pander to their customers completely. We have toddlers so appreciate that there are "no spicy" options. In particular the pad see ew (I think it is called) is pretty mild/sweet and they liked the tofu and broccoli with it. I got the pad kee mow (drunken noodles) with 1 star on their spiciness rating. For what it's worth, I'm the type who likes a little spice but would prefer not to be in pain. I like sriracha and I like Tabasco. But I don't need more than that. 1 star spiciness was very comfortable for me. I could have added sriracha on top but didn't. I probably could also do 2 stars, but also wasn't missing it. My husband got chicken pad thai, no spicy. We enjoyed it. We wish it had more veggies (there were hardly any, it was mostly noodles) and wished it had more other accompaniments like crushed peanuts, fresh lime wedges, scallions sprouts etc. However- more importantly than all those was that the actual flavor was there-something so many Americanized Thai restaurants around here miss. Two vegans say "meh". Considering the numerous items offering veggies and tofu, it wouldn't take much to use vegetable broth in their soups (only meat broth) or vegan-I've their salads (they contain meat). I had the drunken noodle which was good but spicy. The fresh spring rolls were bland and the fried tofu appetizer was flavorless and lukewarm with an ok dipping sauce. I don't need ambiance when the food is good, but since it wasn't good, the uninspired space with crappy furnishings and some boxes stored out in the open next to their soda cooler, lit by daylight bulbs was kind of a downer. The service was ok but the waiter didn't even try to see if more veggie options would be possible with the kitchen staff. The place was dead too so it wasn't like they didn't have time to improvise. It's odd to find this place in such prime real estate across the street from the waterfront. Maybe carnivores would like this place but VEGANS: if you're in the area, go to Basil & Bunny or Beehive, also in Bristol. read more

I only come here when I'm in the area since I live in Providence County, but I love that it's right across the street from the water. Great location and service, casual, low-key setting. After my husband and I dropped off our daughter at a residential summer camp in Bristol just a short distance from Tong Phoon, we ordered for pickup via phone, parked our car in their parking lot to the side, and went for a walk on the pier while we waited for our food. I ordered the Drunken Noodles w/ chicken, no eggs, medium spicy and Thai iced tea, both well-made. Hubby wasn't hungry so he didn't order anything, but he also loved what I got after tasting it. I came here a few months ago with my DD and her friend. Service and quality of food has been pretty consistent. read more

What a cute Thai restaurant! Please support this local business! The atmosphere here is very warm and relaxing. The family that runs this business is SO incredibly sweet and friendly - they have even ran to the door to open it for me walking in. The food is extremely delicious and fresh - My favorite dishes are their fried rice, pad thai and tom yum soup. Some nice-to-knows: The restaurant is BYOB. Ordered: Chive dumplings: 2/order was a little small for a potion size but was delicious, the crunchy gooey texture is just like my mom makes it, skin is thin throughout, chives are fresh and plentiful Crispy pad Thai with shrimp: fried egg noodles tasted fresh, shrimp was plump fresh and deveined, sauced was slightly too sweet (similar to the fish sauce dip for egg rolls) instead of savory flavor, crunchy bean sprouts Shrimp Pineapple fried rice: same great shrimp, love the nutty touch from the roasted cashews, decent flavor. Loved my dinner from here! I ordered take out online, making it easier as I paid online and then when I arrived at the restaurant all I had to do was pick up. It was very seamless. Appetizers - I got the cheese pocket which is basically a crab rangoon but with added sweet corn and onion which was really great. I also got the softy rolls which is lettuce, carrot, tofu, and noodles served in a rice skin with a side of homemade peanut sauce. The softy rolls had very fresh ingredients and the peanut sauce was delicious. Main course - I got the Pad Thai. I just left it as the original dish and did not add veggies or any protein factors as I was curious to try it in just the plain, original way and it was awesome. Great find! The crispy rolls were cooked to perfection - golden, crispy with crisp-tender vegetables and not greasy! The wings were delicious -juicy meat, crisp breading and just the right combination of heat and vinegary sauce. The drunken noodles were flavorful with an enjoyable bite and the red curry with chicken was both beautifully presented and yummy. Heat can be customized and staff are sensitive to food allergies. Rice must be ordered separately. The ambiance is nothing special, but the food is fabulous and the service is friendly. We look forward to returning the next time we are in the area. read more

Holy. After a day of skating through the Bristol Bike path, I found myself in the mood for Pad Thai and decided to grab some takeout from this place. I literally had no idea the food was going to be anywhere this amazing. The Pad Thai was perfectly balanced. Sweet, sour and the punch of fish sauce with the crunchy peanuts, definitely one of the more flavorful and well prepared Pad Thais I've had. Also got the Beef Teriyaki appetizer which was smoky and sweet, a different take on the normal Chinese American appetizer, but this brings me too a dish that totally blew my mind. The Drunken Noodles. My God, THESE are worth the 30 min drive from my house. These long, wide rice noodles are super springy and chewy, coated in a flavorful chili oil sauce with notes of anise and schechuan pepper. This totally blew me away, and absolute umami bomb. I love their Thai tea and I always add bubbles because it is delicious. My favorite dish is the Yellow Curry- Pineapple, squash, bell pepper, onion, carrot, curry powder (not pictured here.) I always get the spring rolls because they are delicious. The beef teriyaki is also amazing and is one of the best I have ever had. The Pad Thai is my second favorite dish and it is delicious. They give you a lot of food for a great price. The employees are very nice and welcoming. The location is perfect, it is right downtown across the street from Independence Park! They admit their website is confusing: Is it spicey at 1 or 5? I ordered 2 and got a super-spicey meal, even though when I called they said 2 is less spicey than 5. Apparently I had to order "mild" though I didn't notice that on the menu. Beware: the vegan Pad Thai comes with nothing more than noodles and spice: not even any crushed peanuts on top!I if you want veggies, don't select "no meat". Although they listened and explained the faults of their website, there was no offer of the slightest compensation for a bad meal. Overall very disappointing. read more

Cute place on Thames, decent food but a bit overpriced for the portions. Was looking for a place between EP and Newport for an early dinner - Bristol seemed like the right spot. Small parking lot that they share with the restaurant next door or on street parking. It was a snowy day, so there weren't too many people in the restaurant. The decor is cute and welcoming. Service was very friendly and prompt - reason for the extra star! We started off with some soups - a Tom Yum with chicken, Tom Yum with shrimp and a Gyo Num soup. The first slurp of my tom yum was very sweet, but the more I kept at it the better it got. Just enough heat and sourness to balance the flavors. I really wanted the papaya salad but it's seasonal for them. =( For entrees, we order the pineapple fried rice with chicken, the crispy pad thai with tofu and the three paradise (chicken, beef and pork with veggies in a plum sauce). I liked the fried rice (needed a little more curry powder IMO) and the pad thai (again was very sweet at first bite) but didn't care much for the three paradise. The flavors of the plum sauce just didn't taste right to me and the veggies seemed overcooked. For the prices you pay ($16.50 for the three paradise and it didn't come with a side of white rice), I think it's a bit steep for the portions. I ordered a takeout order of the drunken noodles with beef for my bf and he said it was one of the best he's had, so might be worth trying again. read more

Tong-Phoon has become my go-to for Thai takeout. We've also eaten at the restaurant a few times. Prices are slightly higher than some other Thai places, but the portion size and quality are there. I enjoy the Gyo Num soup on a cold day and my husband likes the Tom Yum soup. Some other favorites are the Chicken satay, Softy rolls, Green curry chicken, salmon delight, three flavors tilapia, Chicken and Shrimp Prik King and the Chicken cashew nut. We haven't done the BYOB yet, but it's a reasonable $2 per person. The restaurant is always clean and the staff friendly. It's a good option for Thai takeout in the area. read more

Very sorry to say this, but to us the food is mediocre at best. We're huge fans of Thai food. We've lived on the west coast and been spoiled by some of the best Thai food anywhere. That might be an unfair comparison, but after all the amazing Thai food we've had over the years, we think this is meh. Overall, we found the dishes very bland and surprisingly flavorless. Even the 'spicy' dishes have been very light on flavor. The fried rice dishes seemed old, as if the rice was pre-fried hours before, and the meats dry and tough. The wings are OK, the 'mummy chicken' overly fried. In general we find the sauces to be simple, thick, bland, and lacking spices or any complex flavors, and one-dimensionally too sweet. We've been to many authentic Thai restaurants, and find the food here to be nowhere in the same league as those. We wish we could love this place, would love to have a local Thai food option, and always like to support local businesses. If you're not especially a fan of Thai food and are just looking for some basic fried rice for lunch, this will do. But we've been spoiled by having had incredible Thai food elsewhere, and for us this just doesn't satisfy. read more

Having recently moved to Bristol from Newport, hubby and I have been looking for our new Thai place to replace our old standby, Bangkok City. We were pleased to see driving around one afternoon in November that Tong Phoon was soon opening. Tonight, we finally had the chance to try it. We were skeptical given the earlier negative reviews, but decided to take the chance anyway. I am so glad we decided to ignore those bad reviews! We had a wonderful first visit to Tong Phoon. We ordered the spring rolls to start, I had the Pad See-ew with chicken for my entree, and hubby ordered the Drunken Noodle with chicken. We both ordered Thai iced tea for drinks. The spring rolls, which arrived six per order, were filled with veggies and glass noodles. They were good, but we both prefer the spring rolls at Bangkok City more, which contain pork. The Thai iced tea was fantastic! It was strong, flavorful and sweet! My Pad See-ew was great as well! It tasted as authentic and good as the pad see-ew I used to get in Berkeley, CA where Thai restaurants are as common as pizzerias in NYC. Hubbie loved his Drunken noodle and noted that the spiciness was perfect. We had to order dessert. Tong Phoon has a case of the most adorable looking desserts and they were literally calling my name. I ordered the Taro cake and hubbie had the Thai Iced Tea cupcake. Now, not everyone may appreciate the desserts as much as I did. For one, taro is not everyone's cup of tea and the sweetness level was on the low side, which is typical for Asian desserts. But, having grown up eating Asian desserts for which taro is a common ingredient, I really enjoyed my cake. I also like my desserts less sweet because it means you can eat more and not feel as guilty! I had a bite of hubbie's cupcake. I would order one for myself next time. I also couldn't help ordering the hedgehog shaped pineapple pastries to take home. They come in a box 8 for $5. I'm looking forward to trying them tomorrow when I have room in my tummy! Overall, our entire meal, with my box of hedgehog pastries, tax and tip cost $60. Lastly, I wanted to comment on how clean the entire restaurant was, including the men and women's bathrooms which were spotless. Give this place a try! I was impressed with both the food and the people who run Tong Phoon. I came here with my brother and sister-in-law while visiting RI. It is a small, clean and nicely decorated Thai restaurant that is actually run by Thai people! I had the Crispy Pad Thai with chicken and it was delicious. The noodles were crispy but still flavorful and the chicken was moist and tender. Prices here are very reasonable. In fact so much so that I did not realize we had paid for a dish we had not ordered. Luckily the staff also noticed and ran to the parking lot to ask us to come back inside so they could issue us a credit. Now that is how to win my loyalty! read more

I'd like to start this review with announcing this: I am EXTREMELY picky when it comes to one of my very favorite dishes, pad thai. So, this 5-star review does not come easily. My best friend came to visit me last weekend, and I wanted to do something nice with her being that I don't see her too often. We both share a love for pad thai that, unfortunately, my husband and I don't share. So I thought, "why not try the new thai restaurant down the street?" So, we trekked our way in the snow the half-mile or so walk to Tong Phoon. Our fingers and toes froze in the freezing weather, but oh my goodness was it worth it! Tong Phoon was surprisingly empty despite it being dinner time on a Friday. We were seated immediately. We didn't even look at the menu; pad thai is the only dish we ever order from thai restaurants; it's our absolute favorite, so we ordered right away. I ordered the veggie pad thai, and she ordered the chicken. Our food came out about ten minutes later. Immediately after looking at my plate, I knew I was going to enjoy my meal. I took my first bite and just wanted to cry. It was that good! It was the sort of pad thai with peanuts and eggs cooked directly in the meal (which is the only way it should be done, in my opinion). The veggies in my dish were wicked fresh. So freaking delicious. Like, I didn't even regret it afterwards. I almost always regret eating asian food later in the night. My tummy usually gets very frustrated with me, but not this time. In comparison to Sawa, this place is seriously doing some awesome things. Although I wouldn't say the decor or service is as welcoming as Sawa's, the food is just so much better. (That being said, my service was still very good at Tong Phoon). The reviews on Yelp leave Sawa sounding like the best place to get pad thai in Bristol, but their meal tastes more Chinese to me than Thai. The prices are very decent at Sawa; I believe their dinner price is $1.50 less than Tong Phoon, but if you want the best meal option available, trust me and order from Tong Phoon. Sawa is a 1 minute walk from my front door, and I'd still rather journey through the cold just to have Tong Phoon. My one little piece of constructive criticism would be that my friend had absolutely no veggies in her dish. Usually the meat pad thai will also have carrots, broccoli, and other veggies. She still seemed very satisfied by her meal. Bottom line: try Tong Phoon. Both your heart and tummy will thank you for it. read more

Thank goodness I found you! Quick on the phone and the gentleman who answered was so kind - I cant hear a thing and he repeated himself a time or two taking my order. I ordered the pad thai, drunken noodle, thai dumplings, and pineapple fried rice. Medium heat on the noodle and thai - so good! And thankfully, actually some heat! Some places spicy is just not spicy at all. It had not a huge kick, but perfect for medium spice. The only thought was the pineapple fried rice. Good taste, but not super fresh pineapple.
