Try the boat khachapuri (center stage, we had to order some bread to get all the cheese out. It's like cheesy dip) and migruli khachapuri ( the one to the left that looks like a pizza). The stuffed mushrooms topped with cheese are in the clay pot and khinkali (large lamb or pork dumplings) are in the middle between the 2 different khachapuri). This and a couple of salads are enough for an appetiser for 5-8. We ended up taking home our 2 main courses, stuffed full of cheese and bread, NOT COMPLAINING! Main course, we stuck with kebabi and shish kebab. Some pork, chicken and seasoned ground beef/ pork in flat bread. Better than Turkish, 100% Georgians mastered the art of bbqing, spices are not all we know, it's keeping that bbq moist, that's the key. Who wants to chew on rubber? Hard to believe that Georgian food is only now having "a moment." How did this not happen sooner? If TONÉ-CAFÉ is an example of how delicious and diverse Georgian cuisine is, sign me up. Had lunch there today with the wife and a friend; we stuffed ourselves silly and couldn't believe how wonderful every dish was. As a veggie, I'm thrilled when I find a variety of veggie options, and TONÉ-CAFÉ doesn't disappoint. The Ajaruli Khachapuri (there are many on the menu; this one has farmers' cheese and an egg in the middle) was to die for, and the Chabot Nili (cold eggplant) was smoky, rich and bursting with flavor. Also got and thoroughly enjoyed the Ajaruki (three-dip appetizer). The wife and friend also got the Chakhokhbili (grilled chicken) and an order of the pork Khinkali, and enjoyed both. Oh, and we got an unreal quince water; had to buy a bottle of it in the adjacent deli/bakery to bring home. And last but not least, the waitress was super friendly and attentive. Yet another overdue review. I remember it was really hard to find parking before we arrived which is surprising to me. This place seems to be divided in two parts as one part is take out and another for dinning in. We dined in for dinner and order two overpriced Georgian wine which I would say I am a fan of. It's only for the occasion and hey trying their food anyway. I was led here by the amazing looking food which is obviously super hyped in my point of view. It's something that looks great and excited to try but a totally letdown. I am not saying the food isn't great. It's just not my taste. From being small portion for location wise to a bit over priced, I wouldn't recommend driving or traveling this far. You would enjoy a good meal at home with all the trouble. Well I wouldnt consider this a cuisine as more of putting a bunch of preserved veggie on a plate. The soup is like can soup put in a bowl and the dumpling I was looking forward to isn't that exciting at all. Taste isnt something I would add to the description as it's more about the look and that Instagram picture. I did enjoy their cheese and mushrooms dish but who can hate burned cheese and mushrooms. We come here every time we are in NYC. We drive probably 40 minutes out of the way just to stop here for Kachipuri. I personally prefer the ones without egg or meat- just cheese for me. This trip we took a bit of a gamble and tried the pickles and lobio to go alongside our usual kachupuri and cheese plate. The lobio was life-changing. I already have a recipe to make at home. Walnuts may sound like they don't go with beans but the flavor is stupendous. The walnuts give a little 'meatiness' to the dish, while the herbs highlight each other perfectly. In order to enjoy the cheese platter, you REALLY need to like sheep's milk cheeses and extremely salty feta type cheeses. The platter is worth it because it appears to be crafted out of cheese along different stages of its ripening process. One is easy to eat- a fresh cheese. The next is a salty brined cheese. The third is a smoked version of that salty cheese. Finally there's an extremely salty brined cheese that is often too hard to finish. I ordered the Ajaruli Hachapuri($12) and, as per the yelp deal we also got a free small khachaPuri cheese bread. The little cheese bread was pretty awesome. Soft and flaky. They have one of those authentic oven contraptions chilling out in the opposite room that you can see through the glass if you sit in the dining room. The Ajaruli Hachapuri was a bit to heavy and cheesy for me. When you get it you mix the egg with the cheese and its really cheesy, as a cheese lover this took it to a different level, a bit too much for my liking. I tried my friends kabob with veal and beef it was just okay I wasn't impressed. She waited about 30 minutes for her meal. They said it would take longer to cook but that is a bit much considering there was only two more tables in the restaurant actively eating. The Georgian pear sparkling drink was just horrible. So bad. Maybe its an acquired taste but it tastes like artificial preservatives with a sparkle. Definitely don't ever want to try that again. My suggestion is if you go to Tone try the bread! I will drive here from Queens just for their Georgian Khatchpuri and Khinkali. A true winner in my book for sure. There are few spots in Queens that serve khinkali but at some exuberant price which is a no for me. First time knowing about Georgian cuisine was from a late night NY1 channel review on hot foods to try and it turned out great to bring for Superbowl parties! Cheesy bread for everyone is a win win! The first time I went was by train and it was a little scary because I didn't know the neighborhood well haha but now I'm fine! It was just a simple bakery but nowadays it's an actual cafe/restaurant which I'm happy for them for serving for authentic delicacies! All I need for them is to make like toasted khinkalis and you can always take my money hah! I tried toasted kninkali when I visited Russia and it was just super. I couldn't have enough of it! Can't believe it took me so long to try this when it's mere blocks away from my house. This gem is tucked away on ugly stretch of Neptune avenue but inside it feels rustic and homey. I know everyone raves about the bread here and it is fantastic in all it's cheesy iterations but do not sleep on the meat stews here. We always pick up ajaruli( the bread cheese with the egg) except we call ahead and tell them no egg please. Its a tradition for me and my husband to often get their delicious cheese bread. I wouldn't be surprised if someone just plucked this little bakery out of Eastern Europe and dropped it here on Neptune Ave, without changing a thing.* Because this is exactly what bakeries are like in Georgia (the country).** The entire shop consists of a counter, a few shelves of jarred sauces, and the oven. There's some homemade feta in the display case, and not much else. Basically, there aren't many options, and as such I've only tried two things from the shop: 1. The regular loaves of bread. They cost $2 apiece, and are surprisingly soft and airy. It's somewhere between a baguette and a ciabatta, and it looks like a WWF championship belt: skinny on the outsides, with a large, round buckle in the center. It is excellent bread, but not necessarily going out of your way for. What is worth any trip you have to take is... 2. The khachapuri. Reminiscent of a pizza crust sans toppings of any kind, this unassuming carby delight is a round, flat wonder of the world. It looks just like one of those crappy premade pizza crusts you can get at the supermarket, but it's actually two shockingly thin layers of bread, and in between is all sorts of cheesey, buttery, creamy deliciousness. For $6, you can have one of these fine things. Of course, it is better fresh and hot, but I took a couple extra home to stuff in the freezer, because I never want to be without khachapuri, ever again. __________ *Well, I suppose I would. One of the prized possessions of Brooklyn for those who gave this place even one try. A place so small that even the owner would walk by it and miss it. For an unsuspected passerby the smell would be too much to miss it though. This place makes its bread in a tandoor which is a clay oven. It's not that big and limits the bread maker to only a certain amount of bread at a time. They make only one kind of bread here so you shouldn't be confused when ordering. It is shaped like a canoe and costs only $1.50, making it a great bargain. I would suggest to keep it in a paper/brown bag and let it breath, especially when it's just out of the oven, otherwise it will use its steam against itself and become rubbery and not crispy. Another thing they make here is Khachapuri which is a cheese filled bread dish very popular among anyone slightly in touch with the culture. They make two types. There's a cheese-filled flat bread that's not really flat, hailing from the Imereti region that costs $5 and another one made with a layered/fluffy dough going for $3. With a drink the first one usually satisfies two people as it's heavily filled with cheese yet it doesn't feel greasy. The second one is a bit more messy as the dough breaks into bits and is best eaten when slightly cooled down. They also sell Georgian cheese - Sulguni which could be compared to mozzarella cheese. They've also got great sauces for meat called Tkemali as well as tasty peach, tarragon and lemon flavored sodas. The only reason why I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because the bread isn't always available. People put in their orders in advance and sometimes I'll end up waiting for new batch of delights. It's always good to call in advance but the wait time can be anywhere from 30 min to 2 hours. The owner should really consider upping the supply because the demand is clearly there. read more

I opted to try the Khachapuri (cheese bread) and a random tart that looked tasty. In general, I would undoubtably describe myself as a "bread person". I love pizza, garlic bread, sandwiches, pita bread, rolls, and pretty much anything of the sort. The Khachapuri here was light, fluffy, and tasted kind of like a deconstructed pizza without the sauce, which I found to be quite enjoyable. If I had to think of an issue I had with it--it'd be the fact that it was slightly oily for me. The tart that I tried actually ended up tasting more like a cake. It was covered with a bit of strawberry jam and then topped with some sort of marshmallow whipped cream, which I didn't care for. Lastly, the restaurant is newly remodeled, and the prices are great! I found Georgian Bread on Yelp a while ago, and was very intrigued. I am a pizza girl. I'm a cheese girl. I'm a fresh bread girl. This place seemed right up my alley. Unfortunately, it was at the bottom of a very long list of bookmarks, so I only just made it out there this past Sunday. Take my advice while the weather's still favorable: make the trip to Brighton Beach, take a stroll on the boardwalk, and don't put it off any longer. This Georgian cheese bread is incredible. I arrived around noon on Sunday, and there is a bakery counter on one side, and a small-ish restaurant on the other side. We decided to have a leisurely lunch at the restaurant. I started with a Georgian sparkling water, while my husband chose a neon green Georgian tarragon soda. I had a sip... it was sweet, bitter, and herbal. Not my favorite, but husband liked it (he also happily drinks dill and beet infused vodka though). We decided to order 2 khatchapuri - one round with farmer's cheese/mozzarella, and the famous elongated boat variety with 2 poached eggs and cheese. The round khatchapuri came out quickly, along with our side of green beans. The green beans were a nice side, served cool and peppered with garlic and shallots. It reminded me of Turkish food. The round khatchapuri was very filling, and honestly we should have stopped there. But we had already ordered, and were dying to try the poached egg. The latter was not already prepared, so we had to wait 40 minutes for it to be freshly baked - NOT A PROBLEM! I will wait hours for freshly baked cheese bread. The waiter was very attentive and friendly during our wait.. "just 10 minutes more guys, it's in the oven as we speak." The poached egg and cheese katchapuri was worth the hour subway ride, worth the 40 minute baking wait, and worth every exquisite calorie. This was one of the most decadent, rich, delicious things I've ever had, and it's a must-order. We were instructed to use our forks to mix the gooey egg and cheese together, then dig in. Sadly, we only made it through about a third of this guy before we threw in the towel and wrapped it up. Feeling "sick-full", we decided to counteract our gluttony, walk the 10 miles to Prospect Park South, then finish it off on a park bench there. What a cute little shop! The boyfriend and I came around 7pm and was worried that they ran out of Khachapuri (Georgian bread with cheese). I asked the owner how big they were (because I was totally clueless, and yes it was my first time - cherry popped!), he pointed at the train on top of the clay oven and luckily enough, we gotten 3 orders. He was extremely nice and friendly although he didn't speak English too fluently but he understood us, the language of food! The 3 Khachapuri was heavy, felt like over 5 pounds of heavenly deliciousness. The aroma was captivating but I needed to hold off until we got home to try it. It was still warm by the time I was home and the initial bite was pure heaven. Soft and pillow-y with the right amount of salted cheese in the center. The best I can describe it would be it tasted just like pizza, without the crazy tomato sauce. This would go so well with dips like artichoke, spinach, hummus, etc. For just $6, you can get the Khachapuri which is about a foot in diameter. The food here is great. We started with a traditional salad which was fresh and delicious. It had a perfect balance of oil and vinegar. For the second course, we had Khachapuri. The bread was crispy on the outside yet soft and airy on the inside. The middle was bowl shaped and filled with cheese and egg. It was some of the best cheese bread I've had. For our main course, we had chicken and lamb shishkebab. They were cooked to a perfect medium rare with a delicious seasoning and char. It was some of the best I've had. I'd rate the food 4.5 stars. The service was abysmal. There was no one to greet us; we had to walk around to the kitchen to let them know we arrived. Almost all of the tables were still dirty with plates even though we were the only ones in the restaurant. We checked in on yelp and tried redeeming the free khachapuri offered through yelp. They claimed to be out of this check in special, but they did have the most expensive khachapuri on the menu. Moreover, I had to stand up and grab my own drink from the fridge even when we requested drinks. At no point were we offered more drinks when we finished ours. At the end of the meal, it turned out the computer was down and that we couldn't pay by card though we were entitled to use a nearby ATM. read more

This was my first time trying Georgian food and it will definitely not be my last. Decor: Beautiful wooden tables and big wooden chairs, seems like they polish them often. The walls are made with big stones stacked together. The windows are huge so a lot of natural light gets in, which is always a plus for me. There's a room on the other side where they cook the bread in a huge ceramic bowl looking thing, I wish I could've taken a photo of it... Oh, and there are 2 flat screen tvs so I'm going to assume they show games when they're on! Woohoo! Lastly, the ambience made it feel like I was eating in the country-side in Georgia (where ever that is) and no, not Atlanta, Georgia. Food: First, don't forget to "Check-In" on Yelp! I received 1 FREE Kachapuri cheese bread which is... exactly what it sounds like! The Bread (might be puff pastry) is light and fluffy, and the cheese is thick but melty, so when you break the bread, the cheese holds onto each other for dear life aghhh! We started with the Pear flavored sparkling water, or Georgian Lemonade. (Don't ask) It was very good! Not too sweet, not too fizzy. Khachapuri Adjaruli ($12) The best way I can describe this is like a Bread-Bowl. It was baked with farmer's cheese and topped with poached eggs. The bread, again, is super fluffy and goes really well with the cheese/egg combo. I can almost taste it in my mouth as I type this out. Absolutely delicious! Khinkali ($9) The best way I can describe THIS dish, is the Georgian Soup Dumplings! You can choose either Pork or Lamb and we went with the LAMB! The dough is super thick, which I don't normally like, but it has to hold together with all that delicious meat/soup inside. The lamb is tender and really well seasoned, and the "soup" aghh delicious! When you think there isn't anymore soup, you drop the dumpling back on the plate and there you go, more soup! These dumplings had my girlfriend and I sipping soup off the plate, sheesh. I've been wanting to try another Soup Dumpling spot other than the 2 I already go to in Flushing, Queens. But let me tell you, a Georgian bread cafe was the LAST place I had in mind, let alone, a none-asian joint. Finally, for dessert we orderd the Paklava ($3) Or Baklava.. It didn't look like the Baklava I normally see, so I thought they were completely different. I think it's the same with Flan, and how it varies with different cultures. Anyway, this Paklava had more of a Pie consistency; the top wasn't flaky like a baklava, but more like a crust of a "pie." It had a nice gingery taste to it and I LOVE ginger. And although my girlfriend isn't a fan of ginger, she thoroughly enjoyed it; probably ate more of it than I did. Service: The waitress was awesome! There was a little language barrier but she was successful in explaining each dish we found interest in. We even showed her the photos on Yelp! and not only pointed it out on the menu, but talked a little about each dish, and showed us how the Georgian's ate it. We came in as a party of 8 and sat down but after noone coming up to us for a while and not feeling comfortable in such a small setting, we decided to leave. The place is very small with perhaps 6 or so tables and 1 waitress. We also like to eat salads with our entrees and were surprised that there was just 1 salad on the menu. So it was cold - 11 degrees- so I found the nearest cafe to the subway that had free WiFi and good revviews to warm up. I've never had Georgian food before, so ordered the khashi soup - described on the menu as a beef soup enriched with milk- and checked in for a free cheese bread. The cheesy bread is soooo good and khashi is a beef soup made with tripe and head bones. Which I really tried, as I didn't want to offend, but just couldn't. Of course that was the soup I picked! It maybe would have been nice to have the menu explain that a bit more for someone not familiar with Georgian food, but the staff were nice and let me sit there for 3 hours and work on my website and just drink tea, so I feel like it was still fine. The heat eminating from the large brick silo within this Georgian bread store is Africa hot. You can not fully appreciate the heat unless you are inside, but the pay off in the form of stellar baked items is worth the sauna like conditions. The brick oven is massive, as if it is supporting the store's structure. The plain flat bread has a uniquely durable dough, as my attempt to tear off the top corner was met with stiff resistance. Not what I would consider sandwich bread, but a perfect bread for toast, spreads and with your favorite cheeses. The white cheese filled puff pastery was just delicious and will make for a wonderful meal at any time of day. These were the first items to disappear when serving my guests. There are many Georgian products within the hard working, reach in cooler from water to spread's and marinade's. The plumb and vinegar bottle lured me into a purchase with its sweet and spicey look and cork brown color. The flavor was so intense and worked well with the cheese and bread, next test will be as a marinade for my weekend grilling. read more

I almost wished I didn't eat at another spot first so I could have had the space for more options to try out here. The restaurant wasn't very busy even for a weekend interestingly enough. The restaurant is a little bit off the beaten path so that could explain it. Note that while adjoined there are differences between the interior restaurant side and the takeout side (the cafe). The prices are also a few $ more on the sit down side. Getting a pear soda and the bread amounted to about $22 before tip. On any other given day I would balk at the thought of spending $22 for bread and a soda, but this was unique so I let it slide If anything the service left a little to be desired...but I did manage to get my waiter to finally crack a smile when I paid and tipped. I've had people pick up from there for me and each time they tell me that they were kept waiting an extra 30-40 min for 'some malfunction.' I went there with friends after one of the marathons. They had a set of 5 or less menus for the restaurants so waiters kept coming to us to ask for the menus every time someone new came in. They came over 3 times in the span of 7 minutes. We were a medium group so clearly we needed time to order from the very, non-descriptive menu. Also, the waiters did a ridiculously bad job of explaining the food to unfamiliar people. Maybe cut back on the attitude? The food came out after about 1 hour. I kid you not. Was it amazing? Absolutely. Was it worth the wait? Some of my friends would say no. I would say if you like to waste time and have waiters to continually lie to you about timing, then yes. It's easier to order take-out and walk around the neighborhood as you wait. Though, that area is notorious for some casual xenophobia. I'm used to that sort of attitude but if you aren't thick-skinned and don't enjoy being stared at, then maybe just order online and see if they actually deliver on time to you. No matter what, I will keep getting my Khachapuri from here cause it's just so good. And omg, that veal tarragon stew is so comforting. Sometimes, great food is more important. Man, this place needs to invest in some air conditioning. I hate to think what it'll feel like in there come the middle of the summer. Maybe that's why the waiter is so grumpy, he's sweating to death. These things aside, the food is actually really good, especially all of their bread items- bread with cheese, more bread with more cheese, and even more bread with cheese and eggs. We had the Adjaruli [$10], which is a kind of khachapuri with two poached eggs in the middle! This massive piece of bread, shaped like a boat, comes to your table and you're instructed to scramble the eggs really fast. After awhile it begins to look like just that- scrambled eggs with gooey cheese. Just rip the bread off from the sides and dip. Amazing. If you let the egg/cheese mixture cool down, it'll become a little congealed. Not so amazing. The Phkali Trio [$10] wasn't my favorite. As it's name indicates, it's a trio of spinach, eggplant, and green beans, meant to be spread on bread [or eaten with your fork since you aren't given bread?] The eggplant was definitely mixed in with some kind of cream, sour cream maybe. The spinach and green beans had nice, almost middle eastern, kind of spices on them- this must be the Georgian herbs and spices. The Hinkali [$9] reminded me of a pork dumpling that you'd find at a dim sum restaurant. The ground beef was excellent. A serving has 9 pieces, they're big, heavy, and greasy. After two you're ready to call it a day. I don't know what it was about the coffee, but it was incredible. I actually drank it black with 3 brown sugars. It's light tasting and not bitter. You definitely don't need to spend a fortune here to be stuffed. In fact, you can get half of what we ordered and walk away happy. Sit by the window for people watching, otherwise, it's kind of small with limited seating. read more

Lulled by other yelpers' songs of praise, we stopped by after work to try out the goods. Our hungry bellies decided it would be better to sit for an early dinner than shelp a meal home. I'm happy to say that we really enjoyed it! The trio app was tasty, as was their beef barley soup. We also had a main of roasted potatoes with more meat. It was basic but enjoyable... and broiled roasted mushrooms covered with feta which is great for mushroom lovers. They made me happy. :) We also tried their bread with two poached eggs. It was a fantastic experience and our server was kind enough to show us how to eat it. Too bad I can't remember any of the dish names... Sorry! Our server was also patient and helpful. At first he seemed confused by all our questions but then he realized we were just really curious about unfamiliar food. By the middle of the main course he was happy to explain everything. Everything came quickly or on time and he accepted all of our Yelp deal + free cheesy bread with no problems. So overall I didn't get wow'd but we had a very satisfying Georgian meal and are curious enough to come back to try other items on the menu next time. read more

Absolutely amazing food. Had the cheese bread, veal stew, and soup dumplings. Everything was ten out of ten. Awesome outdoor seating setup too. Worth the walk from the beach. read more

I tried khachapuri for the first time in Central Asia a few weeks ago, and knew I had to have it when I got home to NYC. I had bookmarked Georgian Bread a long time ago, but this time I was determined to make the trek out to Brighton Beach to satisfy my carb craving. We arrived in the middle of a weekday afternoon. It wasn't busy, but there was a steady flow of customers coming to purchase the fresh, oven baked bread (love that the giant round clay oven is visible from the window). We sat down in the adjacent dining room and ordered the egg and cheese khachapuri. The server warned us that it may take up to 40 minutes, but we were in no rush, so that was fine. About 30 minutes later, the fresh khachapuri came out. Oh. My. Lord. It was like a heaven sent pillow of bread-goodness. Boat shaped with a curved middle that held the jiggly, gooey, runny poached eggs, butter, and cheese -- exactly how I had it just a few weeks prior. Taking a fork, we broke open the eggs and mixed it up with the fresh mozzarella, and greedily stuffed our faces with the bread and cheesy egg mixture. The bread itself was baked perfectly as well; chewy, springy, warm, great texture. As the heat cooked the eggs and cheese, it was nice to get chunks that had discerning scrambled egg flavor, as when it was still a gooey mixture, the flavors had blended together. Be warned, it is huge, filling, carb-coma-inducing, and one note after a while. It was more than enough for two people to split. We were too full to eat anything else, which was a shame, since the food that other people ordered looked quite delicious (kebabs), and we were also craving a different flavor and texture by the end. We washed it down with the Georgian (or Russian, forgot) pear soda, which was way too artificially sweet. Stick with water. I can't remember the price, but for the khachapuri, giant soda, and tip, we paid less than $15. I recall the prices on the menu being very reasonable. Order the khachapuri. You won't be let down. Just be prepared to walk home after. read more

I call this place "Pop! Goes my diet!" Do not expect to eat anything "healthy" or "lean meats." This is Georgian cuisine. It's about carbs, carbs, a little bit of greens, and more carbs. Do come with a large group and have the following: Khachapuri - well, any of them. Tell your super-American friends and/or kids: "this is a really good cheese pizza":) Khinkali - think, "huge soup dumplings." Like HUMONGOUS. Split that portion with a few of your fellow guests. Lavash - bread for you. Think, "very thick pita bread." Don't even get me started on their meat and chicken dishes, just one word "KEBOBS." So good, Overall, this place made sure I am only eating salads for the next month. But it was sooooo worth it! read more
