Walking to Mike's place the first thing that hits you is the smell of the roasting meats in their ovens. The sweet smell of roasting ham and the smell of garlic and spices on the roast beef kicked up my appetite. I ordered a sandwich called the Ferdi. I think it's the best sandwich I ever ate! Served on a soft hoagie roll and stacked with ham, roast beef, shredded cabbage, pickles, a creole mustard and debris. Debris ...You know those little juicy pieces of roast beef at the bottom of the roasting pan... That's "debris" the secrete ingredient in the Ferdi sandwhich that's sets it apart and raises the sandwhich flavor to "over the moon"! Mike Place is a small "hole in the wall" kinda place, one of those hidden jewels. Located at 122 Old Mill Rd. next to the BP gas station in a mostly industrial area. It's worth the time to search this place out. My feeling is that it will be my "go to" place for handcrafted sandwiches.

Mike and Wife Melody, also have special events like a recent crawfish boil on a Friday evening. They offer catering services, and have been know to provide catering in Cartersville for the past 20 years or so. There were some seats I was able to find a place to sit down at the bar and it took maybe 20 minutes before I could get anybody to come to that bar and stand behind it and ask me if I wanted a beer or a drink and I ordered a beer so I said I would like to see the Colts against the Baltimore Ravens. Could you bring that up on this TV here in front of me and she had no clue she got the remote control and she was fiddling around with it and she goes. I don't think we have it and I asked her well. Could you get somebody that really knows how to use this equipment and see if they can do better and find the game so she disappears for a while. Another 10 minutes comes by and the game started now and I have my $4.50 draft beer in front of me and some guy fiddles around with it and he goes. No we don't have it. It's not on our system here and I said well. Do you have the ticket he goes? No, we don't have the ticket so they have like DirecTV something like that. But a place that big considers itself a sports bar doesn't have the Indianapolis Colts which is being televised live by CBS Sports in Indianapolis where I was born and raised. So I left and went over to a place that I saw some games last year that for some reason I couldn't get locally and it was modern sports bar on South Tennessee. Guess what? 2 minutes. I was offered a beer 3 minutes. They had the game right in front of me where I was sitting. I was invited to sit down with a Cleveland browns fan who was watching the TV right next to mine and I got to make a new friend which I thought was nice. Now at sixers nobody gave a crap whether I sat with anybody or what you know they had other things to deal with I guess, so I'm not going to give them a real high Mark. I wouldn't fault them at all. We didn't leave until almost 11:30, and even then, the staff was still smiling, saying thank you, come again, and just radiating hospitality. You could tell they truly care about their work and the restaurant. And let me mention how clean the place was--like, oddly clean. I saw a staff member cleaning each individual blind and then moving on to the windows. I've never seen that kind of detailed cleaning at closing time in any restaurant. The restaurant was actually within 300 yards of the museum. If you are heading south on Museum Drive towards downtown, Church Street will be the first cross street you come to after the museum. Downtown Cartersville has a large road overpass that spans the train tracks. Under this bridge is a series of shops forming one block of several that make up the whole of the business district. The Appalachian Grill is located on the row of shops under the bridge. An added bonus for us was that there is street parking out front and it was well shaded due to the bridge! There appeared to be one or more public lots within half a block also. The restaurant opened within a minute of when we exited the car. There was a small crowd already waiting, and at noon they opened the doors. I think there was a small fenced patio space along the sidewalk but no one was initially interested in that due to the heat. The interior has a sort of lodge-meets-Frank Lloyd Wright feel in terms of the decor. It is also a bit dim / cozy. I worried that the servers would be overwhelmed by the opening crowd, but they handled it quite well. Our server returned relatively frequently to get our drink orders and later our food requests. There was a slight wait after that, but given the influx of customers, it wasn't as long as I might have guessed. The menu was quite varied, and ranged from salads and burgers up to steaks. This is probably fine dining adjacent in the evenings for dinner. I got a BLT and my wife got a Portobello mushroom sandwich. Both of us opted for the 'steak fries'. The amount of food was surprisingly large! We managed to finish our sandwiches and a few of the fries, but had a take-out box of fries for later too. We both liked our sandwiches. While I tend to like steak fries, these were like the big brother of your average type. They were more like potato wedges than large-body fries. Maybe they are new, as the server asked me at the end what I thought of them. My honest opinion, which I shared, was that they were good, but would be better if the potatoes were peeled and if the size of each fry was halved. We did end up finishing them a few days later. Prices were not cheap but were not out of line for the type of establishment and the quality (and quantity) of food. We loved being able to sit on the comfortable leather couches, enjoy talented live musicians, and have great cocktails in a true lounge atmosphere. The servers have always been fantastic and continue to do an excellent job. Unfortunately, during our recent visits, Elevate seems to have lost much of the upscale lounge feel that originally made it special. What once felt like a refined escape from the typical bar scene now feels much more like a casual bar environment. Guests were dressed in flip-flops and swimwear, and during our last visit a group brought in takeout food with a very strong odor and set up a card game near the front while the musician was performing. The venue is spacious enough that these activities could have taken place elsewhere without disrupting those there to enjoy the music. We eventually moved tables just to regain a view of the performer. Additionally, due to the crowd volume, the servers -- despite their best efforts -- were unable to keep up with drink service, and we ultimately decided to skip our final round and leave. We truly miss the sophisticated lounge atmosphere Elevate once offered and hope it can return to being a place where guests can enjoy quality music, cocktails, and conversation in a more refined setting.
