I just love this place more and more each time I go. Yesterday I tried an item off of their brunch menu--eggs, goat cheese and spinach burrito. So darn GOOD! Last time I tried the Syd Fishus naked burrito and that was mind blowing. The Bloody Mary is super flavorful and spicy and yummy too. Never understood the fascination with this place. I've tried it numerous times and have never been impressed. As others have stated, if you enjoy food with flavor, Tomatillo is not for you. Everything is under-seasoned and overcooked. Soggy, tasteless and unappetizing. Vegetarian friends rave about it so I tried the "Green Machine". Just gross. Soggy greens wrapped in a soggy tortilla with NO TRACE OF SALT, let alone any other spicing. I wholeheartedly agree with people who prefer to drive to the city for Mex than stay around here. Make sure there is more than one cook in the kitchen, otherwise you will wait a long time for your food. At times the service is fine, other times it's just super slow - from getting the food out to the guy who brings the water and the chips and salsa. It's the only Mexican restaurant in town so it has a monopoly based on mediocrity. read more

I am particular about my Mexican food. However, this place really amazed me. Although the wait was a bit long, the food was great. The guacamole was good, had their fresh tea, and ate a spinach beets salad. As a vegan, I spend lots of time finding healthy ways to go out to eat. Misses the mark on "Mexican." There are a lot of menu options for vegans, which was a plus for the purpose of accommodating my friends, and the service was friendly and quick. Those in the party who drank seemed to enjoy their margaritas and other cocktails, too. Unfortunately, that's where the pros end... I ordered the enchiladas with oaxaca and mole sauce. They quite literally had no flavor. I've only sent a couple dishes back in my whole life, but for $12 I'm not accepting enchiladas with zero flavor in the sauce (mole is nothing without the depth and complexity that come with cooking it down for hours and hours) and a side of rice and beans that didn't even seem seasoned in the slightest. The servers were kind and the kitchen was speedy in bringing me a couple tacos - the fish taco is pretty good, although overpriced for its size, but the cauliflower one had a repugnant sauce that tasted almost exactly like Frank's Red Hot. This isn't an upstate diner. It's supposed to be at least semi-Mexican fare and the only Mexican thing about that taco is the tortilla. [I asked if they had Horchata and the server even admitted, "noooo, not authentic enough for that." Permissible, but a bit of a red flag.] My friends ordered a burrito, a bowl, and some other tacos. They all had similar notes to mine - the jackfruit carnitas sauce tasted more like barbecue sauce with an afterthought of cumin than anything Mexican; the chicken tinga in the burrito smacked of excessive sugar and nothing like sufficient acid or heat to match; the bowl lacked seasoning, much like my enchiladas... the only satisfied person was the one who had ordered a chicken quesadilla and even on that one they initially forgot the chicken. TL;DR - The waitstaff is doing its best--2 stars for them--but the kitchen needs to learn how to make Mexican food before this place rightfully shuts down again. I almost wanted to ask for the chef's number so I could get him in contact with my friend in Baja Sur who taught me how to make real tacos. I like the range of vegan options, and they do have pretty darn good chips and drinks--2 stars for those--but this is not a Mexican restaurant. This is good marketing and decor with nothing even approaching the flavors to back it up. read more

Me and my husband come here quite a bit. Anything short rib is great here. The fish tacos are great. My husband is a burrito Connoisseur. He loves them here. I am only giving Tomatillo one star based on my recent experience, which was actually a "zero" star one. So generally, this place is okay local food. I go about twice a month. Tonight I wasted an hour and 1:15 minutes of my life on this place, time I will never have back. I walked in at 6:20 and ordered a burrito. I had planned on eating there, however it gets kind of noisy so I opted for takeout when the mumbling bartender offered. I waited patiently for said burrito, for 25 minutes, during which time the personality-devoid margarita machine jockey didn't even offer me a glass of water. This is fine, but I had already tipped him so it would have been nice. Anyhow, burrito shows up. Nice teenage kid hands me the ticket &the bag. I open it. I see a burrito & my 2 sauces on the side. I get home, and to my vegetarian horror this is a steak burrito. Now, I'm upset. I had driven 10 minutes home and parking on Cedar street is pretty much awful at this time of night. And my order was only ONE burrito off their menu (not custom). This really should have been easy. I drive back. The manager halfheartedly apologises for the mistake and offers to make me another one. Gee, if my takeout took a half hour when the restaurant was only HALF FULL an hour ago, how long would it take during the most packed, shoulder-to-shoulder time of day? Had I been offered a drink while I waited, I would have stayed and left mildly annoyed but happier knowing that they tried to make it right based on the level of hassle this $10 burrito took. I've worked in food service before so I am pretty understanding about mistakes EXCEPT for when they are completely mishandled. I asked for a refund. The incompetent/unapologetic manager proceeded to display her lack of knowledge regarding the credit card system by fumbling and calling other workers over, just to end up taking cash out of the register instead of voiding the credit card transaction. When I pointed out to her that she gave me the wrong change (60 cents too much) she didn't seem to understand. I showed her the receipts and the money she gave me and still did not get through. If one doesn't understand how to complete the most basic of register transactions, perhaps the restaurant biz isn't a good career choice.By this point, I was REALLY done. I was absolutely disgusted by how this manager handled what could have been a simple fix (pacify customer with a drink or chips and an apology vs. a shoulder shrug). Shame on you Tomatillo for not having anyone with any customer service training around to represent your establishment. read more

Nice place informal always crowded at lunch time. Lot organic produce used recommend there soup specials. I have a lot of food allergies there always super careful, often consult the cheff, if there not 100 % sure about a produce they'll suggest a good substitute. Tomatillo is a fun place to grab a bite to eat! The food is great - and all local! On the menu it lists where all their meat and vegetables come from which is pretty cool. The prices are very reasonable for such great fresh food! Their menu has everything, including build your own burritos! Their sauces are great and I suggest asking for some on the side to try as you get to explore the flavors, otherwise they pour it all over your burrito! It's a small restaurant, the wait staff leaves you alone and lets you eat (which I do like), but they are right there when ya need them! read more

Hit or miss. We've had some of the best and worst food from here. It appears if it's based on who's working that night. We ordered our usual tonight for carry out. Ready on time and piping hot. Get it home, my Syd Fishus burrito had beans & very over cooked mahi mahi. My husband's burrito was extremely greasy with specks of goat cheese (paid extra). Previously we've had amazing experiences with light flaky fish, beanless burritos & luscious short rib. The issue is attention to detail & execution. This isn't the first time we've had this experience (hoping it's the last) but we keep going back hoping for that amazing meal we've had countless times before. We had a Picadillo Street pulled pork burrito (yummmm), Bella Baby burrito, nice portabella, and a SYD mahi mahi burrito, all were so dynamic and different, we love everything there. Myself and my 914Live.com Food Crew checked out Tomatillo this past weekend. Here is what we thought. It's awesome when a restaurant actually lives up to the hype. And what is the hype you ask? They're calling it a "Mexchester Original that Incorporates Hudson Valley Ingredients." When I heard this I racked my brain, trying to think of what grows in Westchester that could be incorporated into Mexican food (the combinations in my mind were not pretty). However, after experiencing Tomatillo, I walked away with that feeling I always hope for when trying new places to eat. Not just my hunger was satiated, but that NEED for something new and exciting, something that makes you open your eyes a little wider. SERVICE: Excellent! The restaurant was busy. Happy, lively people in an inspired environment, nothing but smiles. We had reservations for four at 6:45. We ponied up to the bar and the bartender had a frosty craft beer in each of our hands in seconds. Our table was ready before I had a sip, but not before we had enough time to check out the eclectic sculptures that adorned the walls and the internationally- themed photographs that were intriguing, especially for a restaurant. COCKTAILS: During dinner we were planning on having a few beers and a few margaritas. That was until the waitress told us they had $20 pitchers of margaritas. This factoid immediately shrunk our tab 3 pitchers later . . . Teamwork! As far as cocktails go, you have to try their Tanteo Cocoa Tequila. It's an ingredient in the Aztec Margarita, which I had as an after-dinner cordial. Two of my dinner mates ordered a glass straight-up to sip on. We shared each other's cocktails and all agreed that the cocoa beans were doing the salsa on our tongues. It was really smooth for tequila and had a powerful cocoa finish. Not chocolate-like but a true cocoa taste, similar to hot cocoa mix. We enjoyed these drinks at the end of our meal. I'm calling it the perfect Mexchester aperitif. THE FOOD: We started our meal with one of the evening specials and something I've never ordered at a Mexican joint, salad. Yup, salad. But not like any ordinary salad. Let me explain: I will probably never get to eat at Stone Barns at Blue Hill. But at Tomatillo, I get to enjoy fresh organic Stone Barns food. Tomatillo is one of an elite and select few restaurants that get their produce directly from Stone Barns. And this salad was made with fresh Stone Barns organic spinach, beets, onions with a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds and a dollop of fresh guacamole. There nothing like fresh ingredients! I fought everybody off my plate. Every entrée looked delicious consisting of organic, interesting ingredients such as broccoli rabe, seasonal squash, tofu and goat cheese incorporated by someone with an obviously amazing sense of the flavors. I wanted to try everything but I was drawn to the burrito section of the menu. I never thought I would say this but, these are some high-end burritos. Hearty enough to fill up the likes of Michael Phelps with your choice of flavor packed ingredients like grilled skirt steak, cornmeal crusted trout, and zesty cilantro pesto. I had the Oaxacan (which I failed to pronounce correctly), which I highly recommend. Get an extra side of mole sauce, it's amazing. My vegetarian friend ordered the Harvest Burrito (wheat tortilla, roasted seasonal squash, black beans, rice, goat cheese & zesty cilantro pesto). I think I'll play vegetarian for the night next time, cause I had a bite and that goat cheese was delicious. Let me stop writing, so you can make your reservations. You gotta try this place if you like things new and exciting. P.S. We took the Iron Horse (Metro North) down, which I always recommend if you can. Ten minute walk from the station, through a beautiful river town. Also, for four people, with cocktails our bill was under $115. Not bad at all!! read more

I come from a state with some of the best Mexican food, and I'm impressed with this place. The original burrito creations are wonderful, like the vegetarian "Green Machine" I got which had a spinach tortilla and was loaded with vegetables and avocado. They also have a good beer selection. Came here craving for burritos after my bf insisted this was a great spot he's gone to before. Sufficed to say that this place left me hungry and disappointed. The positives of this place is the location, nice decor, great service and the free chips and salsa while you wait for your food. I got the Say Hey Kid which was bland and had a strange texture as if they had little seeds throughout the burrito. My bf made his own style of burrito which he said tasted different then the last time he got it, also noting it was bland that something was missing compared to before. So it seems this place is inconsistent with the food they make sometimes great sometimes terrible. For the dessert we got a Mole bunuelos made of spicy chocolate ice cream. It's less like the typical deep fried Valley of dough and more like the a deep fried puffed up crepe topped with ice cream, not what I was expecting. The spicy chocolate ice cream was good though but the fried dough needed powder sugar or something because it was again bland/ lacking something. Also there was a fly that flew onto my plate.
