You'd think with places like Sundance Kitchen, Cantina, and Roof Taco down the block, this restaurant would want to go out of its way to keep customers, but it turns out the opposite is true. They couldn't care less. I recently moved to the neighborhood and was genuinely hoping to make Catrina my go-to Mexican spot, but after how I was treated, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. It was around 3:30 PM on a Sunday and the place was practically empty -- only two tables occupied outside and one inside. I ordered a burrito bowl, which came out to $20 after tax, and sat down at one of the outdoor metal tables to eat. A woman from behind the bar came outside and, in a very rude and dismissive tone, told me I was not allowed to eat there and essentially kicked me out. There was no politeness, no explanation, no attempt at hospitality whatsoever. What made it even worse was that I ended up having to eat my food sitting on the street next door after just buying it from them. It was honestly embarrassing and completely unnecessary, especially considering how empty the restaurant was. The unfortunate part is that the burrito bowl itself was actually very good. But when the service is rude and you make a paying customer feel unwelcome and embarrassed, it ruins the food. A good meal stops feeling enjoyable when it comes attached to that kind of treatment. Customer service matters just as much as the food, and after the way I was treated, this became an instant 1-star experience for me. I had all intentions of eating a crab boil at Holy Crab in White Plains, NY but they hauled off and closed on me when their hours listed them as open. I had my mouth all fixed for that spicy Cajun snow crab boil, but I guess it wasn't meant to be so I moseyed on down the street and to Catrina Taqueria to prove the point that one money don't stop no show. I ain't going to lie to you though, I was very disappointed and almost didn't want to stop. After getting over my disappointment, I ordered a Malibu Bay Breeze and chicken fajitas. My husband ordered an Old Fashion and enchiladas. (See photos) Can I tell you every darn thing we ordered was delicious including the guacamole!!! I quickly got over my disappointment with Holy Crab once I ate the first bite of my fajita. It was well seasoned and oh so good. I love Mexican food and have my own go to restaurants but this place was not on my list. From now on it will be #1 on my go to places for Mexican food. Period. Added value to the eating experience is the ambiance and fresh breeze flowing through the open doors which gives off an island feel. If you haven't tried them please do. Came here today for lunch with my bestie and we can't believe it has taken us this long to come here! It should be obvious by the lack of pictures we have, but we couldn't wait to dive into our food. We shared the lobster tacos and I could believe the amount of flavor these things had. After one bite we looked at each other in the eyes like "whoa." We also shared the steak nachos which were delicious. I wish there was a little more steak, but besides that I have no bad words about flavor. Our server, who was also covering the bar, had a full restaurant if tables yet managed to balance super friendly service and making amazing drinks. My bestie had the Coco Loco and a coconut margarita. She said the Coco Loco was her favorite because it "tasted like vacation". Whoa! so my friends & i always walk by this spot, but always say "we should go there!". Friday, we FINALLY went so my bestie & i were amazed that Oscar (our sweet waiter) brought us our margaritas with FIREEEEEE on it!! We were like WOWWWWWW, impressed. It's the fun little things, plus they tasted good. Very good price too. I got the steak nachos, so yummy plus they use the red/green chips which is a nice touch for a mexican spot. love it! Bestie got a chicken burrito, she loved it. Oscar came BACK with a sangria for us to share, it was so nice. We were like obsessed, music was really good too. We enjoyed it, it's so cute in there with their fun decor. To finish off the dinner, Oscar again! He came back with 2 shots of tequila, for my bestie's birthday! I've been eyeing Catrina for a while, ever since I saw signs for its pending opening go up. I was a little surprised that another Mexican spot was opening downtown, since there are at least four other ones within a few block radius. Nevertheless, I wanted to try this place out to see how it stacked up. I was off work today and decided it would be the perfect opportunity to try them out, so off I went. Catrina is in a prime location, right in the middle of the Mamaroneck Ave strip. I decided to order to go - I placed my order online and then headed over to pick it up. This space was a small diner prior to Catrina opening, and they did a great job opening up the dining room and providing better flow. I loved the decor, it was colorful and over the top which is exactly what I like to see in Mexican restaurants. The menu had a good selection of offerings, but since the restaurant stressed in their name that they were a taqueria, I decided on tacos. They're sold individually and are separated by type of protein offered - more basic offerings like chicken and pork are one price and more expensive proteins such as lobster are a higher price point. I decided to get two al pastor tacos, and an order of chicken empanadas. The tacos were just okay, the pork was kind of dry but the (flavorful) sauce that came with the dish helped; I didn't find them to be out of the ordinary. I also felt that the price they charged didn't match the quality or offerings. I personally didn't think the tacos were worth $4 each, and would like to have seen a deal where you can get a certain number at a deal or pair them with a side. The empanadas were just fine, though I have had better ones elsewhere. I realize that getting takeout may have impacted the quality, but I have also ordered takeout from other Mexican spots in the area and the food was better. Service was friendly, but overall I was less than impressed with Catrina. Perhaps their other menu items are better, but I didn't think their tacos were special enough to stand out among its peers in the area nor worth a $4 price tag. I would be willing to try them again, this time to dine in and see if there is a difference - but in general you can get better Mexican food elsewhere in White Plains. read more

This is, hands down, my favorite Mexican place in White Plains! I love coming here. The ambiance, food, drinks and service is better than any other place I've been to in the area. I've been here for brunch, lunch and dinner. It's my favorite weekly spot! I would highly recommend the jalapeño margaritas, chicken nachos, and the tacos. I stopped in for lunch. It's absolutely adorable in there, very colorful and festive. Servers are extremely nice and friendly. We ordered taco salad and chicken enchiladas with green sauce for our entrées. The taco salad was very fresh and my enchiladas were equally good. The tomatillo sauce is spicier than expected! I enjoy the rice and beans on the side. Overall, the waitress was very gracious, service was good and we enjoyed our lunch! My husband and I were walking down the street looking for somewhere to have dinner and ended up at this spot. I love Mexican food and it's new to the block so we decided to give it a try. Here are the deets: Pros: --Complimentary tortilla chips and salsa --Friendly and attentive waitstaff --extensive menu --full bar --picture wall for social media pics --reasonable prices --the street tacos were pretty good --I ordered the chilaquiles and it was actually pretty good, and there was a good meat to chips ratio. (I would recommend it.) Cons: --paid street or lot parking --the decor is kinda cheesy --they garnished our plates with wilted iceberg lettuce (may as well not even waste time with that) --the salsa is served cold and is average at best. It's also too sweet, which makes me think it's not homemade. --no drink specials --No daily food specials --my husband ordered the fajitas, and They were like 3-4 mins overcooked, and could have used more seasoning to kick up the flavor. --proteins aren't served proportionately. (My husband ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas and only got two shrimp. Come on now, ppl!) Overall: I enjoyed my meal, and my waitress was pretty good (especially considering they have only been open for like 3 weeks), but I don't think the food or drinks are good enough for this to be a regular go-to spot. Decor was frightening for my 5 y.o. All of the skeletons had him distracted and uneasy. He was very nervous throughout the meal and we had to keep assuring him all was okay. To start I ordered their chicken nachos which I'd give an 8.8/10 just because a personal preference is to have jalapeños on my nachos but it was still delicious! I also ordered a carnitas torta which is a Mexican sandwich with lettuce, onions, beans, avocados, cheese, and jalapeños served with French fries! All of the ingredients combined lead to an explosion of flavors which makes it a 10/10! To help bring down the food I ordered their margarita on the rocks that come out in flames! On Tuesdays they have $3.50 tacos and $6.00 margaritas from 4pm-10pm! Their margaritas are fire! (Literally!) I ordered take out and when I arrived to pick it up the order was ready but when I arrived home I noticed several items were missing. I called the restaurant and they said they never charged us for the missing items. Yet the amount charged was for the entire order. They refused to make it right. In addition, the food we did receive was dry and flavorless. I have no idea how they could make Latin food flavorless. Needless to say, I will never order from this place again. Some bartenders are more accommodating than others, one gal is oh too eager to shut down Happy Hour early. Now that's not very customer friendly is it? 3 stars seems quite fair for this place. The good: the fried rice dish which was like a poor man's paella was super flavorful and a massive, generous portion. The margaritas were excellent with actual pureed fruit used for the flavorings. This allowed for a nice fruit flavor to come through without it being syrupy and so sweet it'll give you a headache. The complimentary salsa was seriously good. The decor is fun, something catches your eye wherever you look. The bad, and reason it has a 3 star rating: Service was crap. Never checked on during our meal. We had to ask for rhe accompaniments to our food (ie. tortillas to go with fajitas). Never came to refill waters or ask if we wanted another round. The guacamole was like a 3/10? Very lime heavy, needed more salt but there was no opportunity to ask the waitress for salt. We ordered it medium and there was no spice whatsoever. Chorizo taco was super dry. Big portion of chorizo in it, but even after squeezing lime onto it, it stayed dry. Birria taco wasn't served with consome or grilled/fried. Just cold corn tortillas and meat. The chips served needed salt and weren't warm as advertised. You could tell they're not made in house. The fajitas, the ultimate disappointment. For the price that I paid for a 1/2 chicken 1/2 steak order, there was minimal meat given and way too many peppers and onions. There were no rice and beans provided, which again, for the price should be. The thing that really annoyed me was that they put the most pathetic portion of cheese on top of your entree instead of on the side, so that you can add it as you please. Will I go back? This place would get a 5 star review from me if the service wasn't some of the worse I have ever experienced ever. Our waiter exuded the energy that he did not want to be there, and he would rather be anywhere else. He didn't greet us, he would let out audible sighs we would ask a question. We had to ask for water. When we ordered he did not acknowledge he heard us. He acted like he was simply bored with our presence. When it came time to pay the check, he put his hands on his head, rolled his eyes, looked to the celing, and let's out a loud audible sigh. It was so forceful I felt his breath on my face and I was 5 feet away. None of the individuals at my table can even believe someone in the service industry would even do this. My food was very good and the athmosphere was great. I want to love this resturant, but this individual did not allow me to. If the service was better I would go back, but the owners of this resturant needs to hire better quality individuals who are motivated to work, or retrain current staff.
