I have been driving past this diner for over a decade, finally got a chance to come here for a brunch with my family on a Saturday morning. There's parking all around the building. Surprisingly it wasn't super busy, so we got a booth right away. The interior was nice but appeared somewhat dated, one side with all the booths and tables on the other side. They had a bar section with some high chairs as well, but no one was there. I was pleasantly surprised to the menu was only 3 pages, not a whole booklet like some other diners. I ordered the New Yorker Omelette Feast that came with pastrami and corned beef wrapped around the egg, side of home fries and toasts. I liked the taste of this unique dish. Homefries were okay. The toast was good. My daughter got the mickey pancake which was pretty good as well. Our server did a decent job. Staff members were friendly all around. The check needs to be paid at the reception register and there's a 3% surcharge for using credit card. Not the most glamorous diner but the flavor is definitely there. Nice and attentive staff. We were seated right away. Good came out quickly. I had egg benedict with crab cake. The eggs were perfectly cooked. The yolk was running once I cut it in. I wish the crab cake was thicker tho. Many booths and tables. It's a little old inside. They might need some renovation. I have been to many diners and this was really just a random stop because everyone was hungry. It was pretty packed but it was Sunday. We were seated right away and were given menus. This was the first time that I have been to a diner that I had to ask for a breakfast menu. We ordered their body builder omelet, burger, big breakfast with the works and a BLT. You won't find anything fancy or out of the ordinary, but what you will find are your everyday diner favorites, including all day breakfast. We dropped in on a random (but beautiful) Thursday late morning at around 11:20am. There were a few customers inside, as expected, whom were mostly elderly and were probably regulars. I was in the mood for a late breakfast, so I ordered the Italian Omelette with Home Fries and Toast, while my better half got the Aloha Burger and upgraded her fries to the Disco Fries. Food was OK and pretty average, which isn't a bad thing at all. Can't say it was any different than any other diner I've been to (UNLESS it's Tops Diner). The omelette was good, consisted of 3 eggs, pieces of sausage, cheese and marinara on top. I tried it because it stated that it was "NEW" on the menu, but it could have been there for months or even years. My wife's Aloha Burger WAS verrrry, verrrry juicy though. Every time she took a bite, it was dripping beef "juices" - even though it seemed to be cooked medium well instead of the medium she requested. The Disco Fries could have used more gravy, but was still solid. Service was quick and good as the waitress came by to check on us a few times. Like I said, this diner is not going to stand out much from other diners, but it's not a bad thing if you're just looking for some good ol' diner food. read more

Tom Sawyer diner has been hit or miss over the past few years and I went in today to give it a last shot. I waited for 5 minutes to be seated while the older bald man at the register checked out a young man and his mother, finished up and walked away and back, with no one else there and completely ignored me. I am 6'2". While this happened the wait staff was at the bar are to the left of the register/pastry display. There were at least 4 standing there appearing to be doing nothing, except for one of them mocking another with a baby voice. Pretty funny. But here I am in my car writing this after waiting and being ignored. Funny enough, this place used to be packed all the time, I wouldn't mind waiting for a table, but the food and service has both gone downhill and it is really sad. read more

My husband and I tried Tom Sawyer Diner for the first time last week. We stopped in after work for dinner. There were a good number of diners seated at the booths for the work week. The host and our waiter were very friendly. I ordered a blue cheese burger that comes with fries, pickles, and coleslaw. I was a fan. It's the type of burger that you have to cut because it's so tall; there's a steak knife holding it together. My husband got a veggie panini; he said it was ok. He was more of a fan of the spinach and artichoke dip that we ordered as an app to share. We both agreed that we liked the vibe inside of Tom Sawyer. It feels like a real diner - it's warm and cozy. When you walk in, you'll see Valentine's decorations already up. Also, the framed pictures leaning into the whole Tom Saywer theme were cute. I saw some of the recent reviews and was a little apprehensive about coming here, but my experience seem to be different than the rest. Here are some of the positives: The waiter was very helpful and available for all of our needs. The food came out very quick and was delicious. I ordered a honey Dijon wrap and made some changes. All of my requests were honored. The menu is pretty typical of what you would see in a diner. There are plenty of good selections, and although the prices are a tad bit high, that seems to be the going rate for diners these days. And some of the negatives: Parking is very limited. We came on a Friday afternoon and there were no spots available. I was able to create my own by parking against the building. And if the lot is full, there's no street parking. The bathroom was clean, but did not have any paper towels only an air blower that isn't very powerful. When I walked out, I needed napkins to dry my hands. Overall, the experience was mostly good. It used to be good but now that we have a much larger audience with the new hospital going in we seemed to have taken the cheap way out and hired chefs that don't love what they do. I ordered ranchero breakfast wrap ...my favorite! Unfortunately I got crunchy eggshells, onion skins, and onion core mixed in with my omelette which turned my stomach , since you can't really chew that up. I ate the shells picked out the onion skins and core and ate what I could. My bf had a long black hair on top of his fruit cup dish and that was the icing on the cake . We paid $63 before tip for a burger, grilled cheese sandwich and two kids meals! The food quality was ok but nothing worth coming here for and definitely NOT worth the price. One kids meal was 10.99 and consisted of a single slider and fries. We can get more for less at Gotham City or Matthews Diners and their service is better. Our server went on break while we were eating and although another server introduced themselves we never saw them again and had to go ask for our check. It's a diner, what can I say?! Give it 3 1/2*. But it's been here for several decades. They used to have a sign outside, "We welcome your kids." Our family joke is that they took it down after we'd brought our kids there; they used to toss their bits of food off of the high chair trays, each as a toddler. . But, as my yelp friend Edward often says, I digress. So it's a Sunday afternoon and we're coming in with another couple from a nearby cemetery after the funeral service of someone we knew. The place is packed! I learned later on that it's because Valley Hospital's brand new building is right around the corner (we no longer live in the area). So, good for the diner! One friend had a turkey sandwich that she liked a lot. Her husband had a cheese omelet and he was happy too. My husband and I were each attracted to the special omelet of the day, wild mushrooms, with cheddar cheese, asparagus and tomatoes. Sounds delish! It did contain all the ingredients mentioned. But for some reason, it seemed kind of flavorless? I can't put my finger on why. Mild cheddar but plenty of it. Diced tomatoes. Bits of asparagus. Mine had some mushrooms, not too many, I knew they were mushrooms by the brown color and the texture but not any discernible earthy mushroom flavor. My home fries were quite burnt on top, which I like actually, but underdone beneath. I finished my eggs, left most of the potatoes. Rye toast was good, though pre-buttered because we forgot to ask for dry, so it was a little soggy. Coffee - it's a diner with a lot of turnover, so the coffee was fresh and good. Service is very good. No complaints. The meal was diner fine, which is to say not gourmet but definitely acceptable or better, prices not bad (about $75. pre-tip) for the 4 of us. If you need a decent meal and you're in the area, you could do better but you could definitely do worse, so I'd say don't hesitate to come here. Our one important note: it seemed that there's only 1 handicapped-accessible parking spot, which is kinda crazy for this big a place. Came her for a quick bite last Saturday night. Our server was very cordial however a few issues makes this a 3 star review. I ordered a vanilla egg cream but only after being assured he knew how to make one. Unfortunately it wasn't even close even after I sent it back for more vanilla syrup and seltzer. Haven't been there for awhile. Always a very pricey diner but the food was usually ok. I started Off with sharing with my guest the TSD special appetizer. the everything on it was overcooked and very dry. The waiter brought our entrees right after he served us the appetizer. he took it back. Still came back while we were trying to salvage part of the appetizer. By the time I got to my rare meat entree it was well done. My guest order of fried shrimp was also overcooked . Service was mediocre at best. I came in at roughly 2pm on a Monday, and was told by the staff to sit anywhere. I assume that this was because it was not terribly busy. Once I sat, a server came over, he took my order. For some reason, only the specialty burgers are listed on the menu. I had to specifically request a regular cheeseburger. A few moments later, a busser dropped off my water. Shortly after that, my server reached across from the bar and dropped off my coke. I found this extremely unprofessional. If I was at home with a friend, this would be expected. About 5 minutes later my burger got dropped off. For some reason, I had a gut feeling to not finish my soda too quickly, as I feared I would not be getting a refill of check back. It's been now roughly 10 minutes after I've finished my meal, and still no check back. Pretty horrible service. I see this occurring more often when I dine alone and at local diners. When I'm with my in laws, or my spouse, I don't have this treatment. This also doesn't seem to happen with national chains as much. If my spouse or family want to dine here moving forward, they're more than welcome. I'll be either eating at home, or going elsewhere. read more
