Love this place and we have been here many times over the years. Decor is nicer than the typical Jersey diner. Great food and great service. Honestly, we've never had a bad experience whether we are here with friends or family. Tonight I got the chopped steak with mashed potatoes and my wife got a cheeseburger and fries. My daughter got chicken parmesan. We all loved our meals. There were tortillas stuck in my mashed potatoes (on purpose) which we thought was funny. I ate them, of course. I got the crab eggs Benedict. It was definitely imitation crab and it did not taste good whatsoever. I was extremely disappointed. The hollandaise sauce itself wasn't bad but expecting crab then instead biting into a weird tasteless imitation fish was not ideal. By the time we got there, they were almost finished setting up a large table to accommodate us all. Went to Tom Sawyer Diner for a late Sunday brunch with a friend. We were seated quickly, and our drink orders were taken. I was surprised at the menu because it did not include breakfast. I asked the server and he came back with the breakfast menu which is separate. (odd for a NJ diner to not have breakfast menu by default.) I ordered my usual standard, corned beef hash and eggs. Surprisingly, the corned beef hash wasn't just ground up mush, it actually had visible fibers. The eggs were cooked as ordered, and the home fries were good. Ordered a salmon platter which came with 6 thin strips of smoked salmon, a Tuscan omelette, side of sausages and bacon, two coffees, one milk shake. That's for three people. Even though costs of food has gone up paying $75 total for breakfast is pretty steep. Not worth going out for breakfast. The smoked salmon was a bit funky but did not get sick from it. Had a lunch meeting here today. It's Lent so no meat. Oh nice crab cake special w lobster bisque. Score, sounds wonderful. Too bad both dishes were actually ALL surimi aka imitation crab. Not even a drop of real lobster or crab in either. ZERO lobster, ZERO crab. So what I really had was surimi cake special and surimi bisque. Terrible business practice by the establishment. This was my first time at Tom Sawyer Diner. It was 2pm after running the Paramus 10K Run. I ordered the Acapulco Melt sandwich on the specials menu which consisted primarily of roast beef and came with chips, pickle and cole slaw. I enjoyed my meal while watching a bird cause explosive damage to a coyote on the Cartoon Network on the television. Living so close by my family always likes to come here for breakfast. The diner is off a busy road with a traffic light that barely turns red for patrons to leave the place. So you're left making a right out of the parking lot instead of a possible left to the other side. A friend of mine comes from New York just for their corned beef and eggs. My wife usually gets the corned beef with eggs as well, but after finally trying a bite of her corned beef I can't say I'm a fan. The beef was extremely salty even with the egg yolk mixed in. The table also ordered the Santa Fe and the Top of the world burger. The Santa Fe wrap had dry slices of chicken and barely any spread. The Top of the world burger was actually quite good though. The patty was cooked to order and it also had caramelized onions which made the burger something to go back for. Service was alright, they were attentive in the the beginning when we sat down, but after a while the waiters stopped coming to our table. Stopped checking on us or asked us if we wanted anything else. All in all, it's just an ok place to get a bite without waiting on a line. read more

They have a separate breakfast menu here. They offer all the usuals and some terrific omelet options. It all looked great. The prices were high though. So high I looked for the least expensive thing on the menu. Which I didn't order. But I did have a breakfast sandwich that was ok. Not worth the $8+ cost. My service was with a terrific smile and that did make the experience better. But I had sticker shock. The food was good. They had a bunch of regulars, which is always nice to see. I must have passed this Diner a million gazillion times and never stopped, what is wrong with me? So a few weeks ago, I was here for a luncheon with friends about 15 of us, we sat in the back area of the diner because we were such a large group. Our server was super friendly and kept our beverages filled. We ordered Matzo Ball soup, which was really really good, loaded stuffed potato skins, and can I just say the salads here are HUGE!! seriously, you have to share and I love salads, but there is no way I could eat a whole one myself. I ordered a tuna melt which was perfectly made, I have not had one that I enjoyed as much in a very long time. A few burgers were ordered, cooked perfectly and lots of french fries, onion rings, a few grilled cheese on delicious grilled buttered bread and a couple of wraps, two ordered breakfast and these orders again, huge!!! Stopped by not expecting much, honestly a lot of lousy diners out there.. I was pleasantly surprised! The service was friendly, the food came quick and the Sausage links were not from the supermarket freezer... French toast was on point and the coffee... well it was OK but at least served Hot and topped off. You can park across the street in residential area if the lot is full, don't let that fool you, they have lots of seating and have not waited more than 5 minutes on a Saturday morning. read more

I wouldn't come here again. These are one of those restaurants you would only come once and realize it was a waste of time. Let's start off with my waiter. Sadly, I didn't get her name but she was a Russian, fair colored woman with short blonde hair. She was a polite woman but when you asked her something she was annoyed and came off fairly strong. So, my food was ordered and it came back fairly quickly. I wasn't very happy with the food. I ordered a quesadilla and it was tasty but the flavors were off. It was a breakfast quesadilla but they gave me guacamole and Pico de Gallo so nothing on the plate flowed together well. The waffles I ordered for my mom were a bit burnt and the bacon was extremely crispy. The price didn't reflect the food's authenticity at all. I used to love coming here. The food is fantastic and the service is super friendly. The dining room is clean and well maintained. During the pandemic I ordered breakfast to go for the whole family about 3-5 times a month. We were always happy. Today the owner made a show of adding $5 to my bill for a to-go cup for my coffee after spending $65 on breakfast. Most places just hand you a cup and a lid without a second thought. No business is making a 97% profit margin on handing people paper cups, that's just not realistic. I can understand that price if I walked in and ordered coffee from your coffee bar, but I asked you for a cup for a coffee you had already poured and got charged $5 for it. Also if u have anything to-go, you have to package it yourself. They were nice to give a bag though. Also, u have to pay at the exit, which I don't like because that's how they get u to double tip. I wanted to tip my waiter because he was really good, so I left him $10 cash on the table. But then when I got up and payed at the cash register- it asks you to tip again and it starts at 18% lol. So idk... a bit shady there and I bet they know what they're doing. When you walk in, the interior actually looks better than the exterior, which was surprising (nothing super special though). They have one menu devoted to breakfast and another with other foods. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla ($11.99), which was pretty filling and hearty. It also came with potatoes, which were fine. The guacamole didn't seem super fresh. I often think you should be getting more of a bargain at diners but mostly every dish was over $10/11. Overall, it's just okay. It seems like the parking lot can fill up, even if the interior isn't full, perhaps because it's near the entrance/exit to the Garden State Parkway. read more
