D and I were here tonight for a dinner after a long day's work. She at her job and I spent the day deep cleaning the cage of our yellow sided green cheek conure. We arrived a little after 9pm. The service of the young server was perfect. He was prompt, polite and attentive to our needs. The food was as good as you can get at a highway diner. We got what we expected and enjoyed it. Desert, however, is another story. D is allergic to anything that contains caffeine. That means no coffee, tea, certain pain medications and NO CHOCOLATE. She asked me to go to the display counter and see what kind of cheesecake there was. There were many different kinds: mango, orange, caramel, banana and more. Unfortunately, this diner's idea of garnishing a desert is with a creme topping loaded with CHOCOLATE STICKS, CHIPS, AND COOKIES! (see attached photo) EVEN THE DESERT LABLED VANILLA CAKE WAS FESTOONED WITH CHOCOLATE HOO-HAH! When I mentioned this to the management, I was told, "Well, we have rice pudding and baklava." No matter how I worded it, he just couldn't seem to comprehend that a good 90+% of his deserts had chocolate which was discriminatory against people who are allergic to chocolate. I even tried to put it in another reality for him. I asked if their baker made anything with peanut or peanut butter. He replied in the affirmative. I asked if they had a special preparation area so that there were safe deserts for a child with a peanut allergy. He didn't seem to understand the premise. So, if you, or your child have ANY food allergies, I strongly suggest that you avoid the Suburban Diner at all costs. We will be doing so in the future. read more

My husband and I caught sight of this retro looking diner from Route 17 and followed our curiosity inside. As diners go, Suburban Diner is far from a grimy, greasy spoon. For a diner that's been around since the fifties, the inside is surprisingly clean and modernized. The space is also pretty cavernous, with tables and booths stretching to both to the left and right of the entrance. The menu reads like a classic diners' - lots of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, pastas, and brunch options. We ordered one of their burgers, which was just fine. I appreciated that it was served on a brioche bun and that the patty had achieved a decent char. What surprised me was that there was a separate menu for specials...and lots of customers were ordering them. To wit, I caught sight of a small roast chicken arriving at a nearby table, complete with vegetables and mashed potatoes. It was a surprising thing to see coming from a diner kitchen, and it made us spontaneously choose a beet salad from the specials. With roasted red peppers, avocado, beets, and hearty slices of feta (which we swapped for the goat cheese it normally comes with), this was a truly robust salad and stole our burger's spotlight. This is a busy diner, so service is without frills. There were small things, like the dirty silverware and our server's curt, monosyllabic interactions, but I also think expectations should be curbed at a casual eatery like this one. read more

Classic diner in Jersey with that vibe but with a full open bar in the center of the restaurant with a pretty decent crowd actually sitting there like it's a bar watching the game. Interesting.. Let's get this out the way, our waitress Isabella? (Damn right I made sure I got her name) Yeah ZERO MANNERS. I said thank you after every time she came by to take our order, gave us our dishes etc Not a single eye contact, smile or you're welcome. I'm no pro or anything but come on some acknowledgement to your customer would be nice. But hey that's just me.. With that being said? The food was pretty good. We like to try things you rarely see on the menu. So I had the Beef goulash, added some hot sauce and it came alive!! Noodles were cooked al dente and beef was nicely done and shredded apart. My kid had the London broil and the steak was cooked just how he wanted, nice creamy sauce over the rice and fries. The food was really good. Big portions and very reasonable prices. Although the service was good - we felt very rushed. I had matzah ball soup and before I finished my soup they served my main meal. My grandson was sleeping and I needed to feed him when he woke up. Finally the waiter asked if we could pay our bill because he needed to leave. It's one thing if the restaurant was crowded and they needed the table, but it was lunch on a Thursday afternoon and it was empty. I hadn't even taken more than four bites of my salad and they were ready to throw us out. I want to also make a note that I asked for a box to take home my salad and they gave me a large box but because I barely ate, it wouldn't fit in the box so asked for another box and the waiter actually questioned me and said well I gave you a big box. Why can't you fit it all in? I literally had to prove it to him that the box was full. I opened it up to show him. But did he not believe me? I really wasn't trying to get away with leaving with an extra box that I wasn't needed. This really bothered me. I wanted to also make note that as big as the menu was - there were no soups listed! We came by for dinner on a recent Saturday evening at 6pm and, if I didn't know any better, I would have thought it was brunch time because it was absolutely packed in here for dinner! I can totally see why it's so busy though, even for dinner. Suburban is definitely one of the better diners in northern NJ - as in - cleanliness, service, food and decor. It doesn't look one bit outdated and it's in the heart of Paramus as well, so it's sort of a meeting ground for many. This time I ordered the Corn Beef Hash Benedict. Solid, solid, solid benedict. Besides the corn beef hash being good, the home fries were actually what shocked me. Typically, I don't love home fries, but the home fries were flavorful and crispy and not your typical bland home fries. Our waitress was very friendly throughout and, even better, the customers eating around us loved interacting with our kids. Overall, our last visit was a great experience here and pretty much solidified my thoughts that Suburban has always been one of the better diners in the area. read more

Ambiance: Good lighting, not too loud. Service: It was ok. My mom and aunt had to keep asking for drinks to be refilled. Waiter didn't talk much but was nice. Food: There are so many things to choose from! I got a buffalo chicken wrap that had lettuce and tomato. There was an insane amount of tomatoes so I took a bunch out and re-wrapped it but it was good! Their fries were hot and delicious and not greasy like some other places we have been. My husband also got a wrap and he enjoyed it. The rest of the table ordered breakfast and my aunt cleaned her plate! I have never seen her eat that much or that quick. They said they loved the breakfast potatoes they got a lot and raved about their omelettes. They also have a dessert counter which was amazing! The first thing I noticed about this diner is the size of the parking lot, it's huge! You'll always find a spot! Upon walking in, it's very big inside and we were seated immediately. If you have a hard time making a decision, then you will definitely have a hard time here because they have so many menu options and everything sounds delicious!!! This may quite possibly be the biggest menu I've ever seen! For an appetizer, we ordered mozzarella sticks. They were very good and the marinara sauce was delicious as well. You were able to bite into them and the cheese was not dangling out of them. They were very easy to eat. We also ordered the grilled chicken panini with red peppers and provolone cheese with a side of sweet potato fries. We also requested coleslaw and pickles. All of this was delicious and the panini is a very generous portion. The sweet potato fries were very thick! The coleslaw was delicious as well! We also ordered a bleu-cheese burger, with a side of regular french fries. The flavor of the burger was decent, but the bread was way too thick for the size of the burger and it overtook the burger. For dessert, the waiter informed us that there was no dessert menu, and we would have to get up and go look at the fridge of desserts. I did take a walk over and noticed that they had Tres Leche in the window, so I decided to order that. The presentation was great, however they either don't know what a Tres Leche cake is, or this is their own version of it. It had absolutely NO LECHE in it! It tasted like regular sponge cake with buttercream inside. The layers of sponge cake were also very thin, and so the whipped cream or buttercream was basically all you tasted. We also ordered a cappuccino, which was not the best. Service was decent. Interior is pretty and very clean looking. I would return though and probably try something else. I came here with a group of 14 for a late lunch on a Sunday and we were able to be seated immediately (probably since it was a bit later than normal lunch hours). I'm not sure how busy it would be during peak hours. Our server Rachel was so sweet and attentive. On top of the stellar service, the food here is really good! We've always driven past but never remember to come back. But this time, we wanted to stay in the area after a movie so we finally went. We've been missing out :) Very cool interior. There are a couple of semi round booths that were cool looking. I would have loved to sit there, but they were occupied, maybe next time, hehehe Service was great by Mary. Nicole was our server and she provided excellent service start to finish! That always makes for a great dining experience. Food was excellent and most people know I am particular about food. I had eggs, home fries with request for onions and peppers and corned beef hash. It was yum but was sad to hear they do not serve chicken fried steak and eggs which is my go to. Um, wait --- this diner was kinda....amazing?! I typically AVOID Diners in the afternoon --- I either go in the morning, or late at night. I had gone to Suburban Diner with some friends at about 1. You could imagine it: a mob scene. But this crew at Suburban Diner had it under control. Without any reservations, we were seated in less than 2 minutes of arriving in chaos, and were attended BEAUTIFULLY by the waitress. I ordered the Greek Breakfast Bowl ($16), and it is a sight for sore eyes. It was equally as beautiful as it was filling and tasty. Others at my table got the Original Breakfast Bowl ($14) and a Chicken Sandwich ($16). We all concured: ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. The Breakfast Bowls were devoured --- we needed some rest afterwards, while the Chicken Sandwich was so filling my pal could only eat half. Doubtful about Diners? This diner is one of my favorites in all of NJ, which says a lot since NJ is famous for it's diners. Plenty of tables but still expect a wait on weekends. Great service. Plenty of parking. Prices are fair for the quality and large portions. Good chance you are bringing leftovers home from lunch or dinner. The panini sandwiches are 3 HUGE halves. Awesome french fries including some well though thought options like Greek fries with olives, capers, cheese ( see picture) Cocktails are pretty good for a diner as well. But one of the biggest features is their HUGE pastry showcases. OMG..... when you first walk in those with a sweet tooth will drool over all the options. Baklava cheesecake?! Just too many to list. And I hear almost all made on site too. Great place. Never reviewed it before because I don't want more people going! LOL read more
