Tokyo House isn't very attractive from the exterior, but it is a nice surprise once inside. The atmosphere is simple but nice. Seating is ample, decor is authentic, music is relaxing, and unlike many Japanese restaurants the sushi bar is actually inviting to sit at. Service isn't perfect, but it's what you expect from a sushi bar. Now what you really care about, the food. This shouldn't be anyone's favorite sushi bar that they're taking out-of-owners to when they come to visit. But it's a solid backup or go-to if you live or work nearby. And it's worth stopping at if you're passing through. The fish is surprisingly fresh for a less extravagant sushi restaurant. I could tell it was fresh just by looking at the sushi bar display case, so I tried the "sushi lunch", which is 5 assorted nigiri and a California roll for $10. I wasn't disappointed. Miso soup, salad, green tea, ginger and wasabi were all ok. There was nothing to complain about OR to write home about. Avocado was fresh/ripe. My glass stayed full. My wallet stayed intact. And I imagine I will have a decent rest of the workday thanks to a satisfying and relaxing lunch experience. read more

A few reviewers below have expressed concern over letting this cat out of the bag. It's true. It's surprisingly GOOD sushi. A very humble and unassuming store front - you'd never expect much. But the rolls - mmmmm, the rolls. The Dragon Roll floats my boat. The Rainbow Roll is great. The soba soup makes me happily smack my lips. Order a maki combo and you get soup and a salad with that awesome ginger dressing. So worth it. And all meals come with complimentary edamame. And all tables have BOTH low-sodium and regular soy sauce. Its these little details that make me happy. It's good for takeout as well, although my personal feeling is that sushi tastes different once its been boxed up, regardless of where you order it from - kinda like Pizza. Ever notice that? They have a cute little set up there too, its comfortable and clean. Eat it there for the full effect. The wait staff here are great and friendly, maybe a little too eager to please sometimes - I ALWAYS have to pee very soon after leaving here, as they fill up your water after you've taken 2 sips. Been here about a dozen times in 05-07 for lunch. Maybe once or twice for dinner... I feel that they actually give a crap about their food and customers. This place is never packed so I think they are eager to earn repeat customers. Basically I always order the salmon bento box for lunch. It comes with green tea, FRESH salad with a delicious dressing, miso soup with extra tofu if desired, a couple of shumai (steamed or fried), California roll, steamed veggies, and teriyaki salmon with onions and steamed white rice. All that was like $6.95. Maybe it's a lil bit more now but that was like, the deal of life in Riverdale. The service was really shy, but kind-hearted and humble. The place is super clean and has a nice little Japanese motif going for it. I've only been here for a cozy 1 on 1 dinner with a close friend or two, but i would totally feel comfortable coming here alone. It looks like a little strip mall sushi joint and you are like I am going to eat decent fish here... and not die? and yes...Oh boy will you have more than decent fish here! The rolls are all sooooo tasty-- and very fresh. We love the red boy and the pink lady rolls and the kani salad (spicy crab with a bit of tempura crunch- YUMZ). Honestly, all the rolls we tried are divine. Holy moly. If you do not feel like sushi, the Teriyaki shrimp and chicken are also very delish...cooked perfectly with a nice light teriyaki seasoning. The service is also great. They are always happy to see you and you get served quickly and efficiently (with a complimentary hot tea if you are nice). This place TOPS all the other day to day sushi joints in Manhattan. As a matter of fact we tried out three different daily sushi joints in UWS (including Haru and Raku) and were very disappointed. This is the best sushi restaurant in the Bronx. I have tried pretty much every location in the Bronx and wouldn't go anywhere but here. Sushi is fresh and delicious every time. I've been coming here since 2002 and wouldn't go anywhere else north of the city. I don't have a real favorite roll here because everything is so good but are family favorites are the happy roll, volcano roll, and the crunchy spicy salmon roll. Went in after a crazy ride, for a late dinner with friends, about an hour before closing time on a Friday night. As a sushi regular, I expected FRESH fish, and firm structure with the rice. This place does them right! (You wouldn't believe how many of these sushi restaurants don't get the concept.) The staff was welcoming and.. good-looking too :) Their warm and attentive service definitely made dining experience a pleasant one. Even though this may not be suitable for large groups, it is a great place for 3-4 close friends gathering. A convenient parking lot is also a plus. Suspected food poisoning after eating the shrimp tempura there once. Both me and my gf ate the takeout and both woke up feeling woozy and sick. So we stopped going there for a few months only to go back since we live really close by. Bad decision. The outside may look clean but i've seen the 'chefs' come out and the way they eat and slurp you just have a feeling they aren't very clean. Sushi guy also. Outside is pretty clean I guess. Food is generally bland and rather tasteless. Rice is hard and dry usually. Very stingy with the amount they give considering the bento box is like $20. They actually give you a half a pint of 'soup' with the lunch special? I mean is the salt water really that expensive to give half a pint of it? Sushi is generally very sloppily done. They actually put the HOT SUSHI with cold sushi in the same box to conserve a cheap plastic box. Can we say contamination? What's laughable is if you spend over 40 dollars like we did a few times, they give you a cup of canned pineapple and call it 'free fruit!' Kinda embarassing to even put that. Last draw was when the waitress was rather rude today. Not going into details. Not going back again. read more
