My iron stomach couldn't handle tonite's dinner at Sushi-Q. We havent been to this place for about 6 months & I don't think we will be back. Ownership changed June 16 & although the waitress was very nice, the food was not very good. I had the Hong Kong Roll & although it looked good, it tasted slimy & bland. The piece of tempura in the middle did not taste fresh and the eel on top was tasteless. Husband had the chicken teriyaki & it looked so sloppy - nothing like he has had previously. Underneath the chicken was a mixed veggie medly that was very watery & bland. The chicken itself was measly & mediocre tasting (NYTimes has an awesome recipe!). And they dont even serve hot tea... Never heard of a sushi restaurant that didnt have hot tea - its not hard to boil water & drop a tea bag. We noticed that no one else was eating there - and it is usually bustling on a Fri evening. And there is a old, musty smell very noticeable when we walked in. We should have just walked out when we noticed these two things... This was technically my first official time trying sushi (I tried Sushi about 15 years ago and it wasn't a good experience, but my taste buds have changed). The restaurant is authentic and clean which is appreciated. The customer service was also a pleasant experience. It was also my daughters first time eating sushi as well and she's now a fan. The kitchen is open concept, so you can see the sushi chefs preparing the rolls to order. I ordered the spicy salmon, spicy kani, shrimp avocado, eel cucumber, chicken tempura, krunchtime fitness rolls and a miso soup for takeout. Miso soups are often an overlooked side, but the soup, albeit mildly salty, is incredibly rich, savory, and full of umami and deserves that recognition. My favorite rolls were the salmon avocado and the krunchtime fitness, both of which were light and delicious owing to each ingredient standing out with fresh and robust flavors. The spicy salmon, spicy kani, and chicken tempura were also rather good. These three were really jammed pack with their respective fillings. However, I didn't really like the amount of sauce that was both in the salmon and kani rolls themselves and then added again to the top. I felt like I could decant off all the sauce and dip other rolls into that spicy mayo, and it would still be enough. I did not like the eel cucumber much because of too strong of a saltwater taste, easily being the only thing I didn't enjoy. Overall, Sushi Q was a good experience with satisfying food at a superb deal! The $39.95 sushi roll platter with the five rolls and a special roll is sufficient for 2-3 servings at less than $7 a roll. Located on the deeper less busy end of Crosby ave; I've ordered take out a few times and while there is indoor seating there is only one table so I wouldn't exactly recommend planning to dine in. There is no outdoor option as well. That being said, while it's not the best of the best I've ever had, for the price and amount they are a pretty solid option for sushi in the Pelham Bay Area. I personally don't like Tuna so last time I asked to swap out tuna for another fish and they were very willing to swap and accommodate which was nice! I would really recommend to take advantage of their lunch menu because you can get a really solid meal for under 15 dollars and they even do Saturday lunch specials too! I am a first timer, but we do know others who have ordered from Sushi-Q's and they love it. The place is small and can only seat about 8 folks at most. They do however seem to do very well in their pickup/delivery service. As for me I can safely say that this is now one of our "Go to" places. The service and food is absolutely fantastic! The salads were okay, they were very wet and saturated with Mayo which didn't make it so enjoyable. Not only did they not help me get the rest of my order as the majority of food was missing which they charged me for! They hung up on me and didn't help me in any way!!!! Awful place. I went here with my cousins who were taking their daughters to Dance/Gymnastics school right around the area. While we were waiting we decided to look for a dining establishment and bumped into this place. Upon entering, we noticed only 2 minutes had passed since the Lunch Specials were available and asked if we could order from that menu. They denied us, but we continued to look at the menu. For the appetizer, I settled on a Vegetable Sushi (where the Chef decided on what combinations of vegetables to give me. I was thinking, that as in other Sushi places I've visited it would be some sort of avocado/cucumber/sweet potato combo. However, when I got my order, they gave me cucumber with iceberg lettuce. Yes, you read right. ICEBERG LETTUCE. yuck!!!! Who serves that crap? Apparently this place does. I've never been to a Sushi place where one of the vegetables added on to a Sushi roll consists of Iceberg Lettuce. It is entirely void of nutrients. This experience has allowed me to immerse my self in conversations around sushi fanatics and the culinary experience. I've come to one idea, which is if you are a sushi place, no matter where you are located, the establishment should serve authentic meals with optimal produce. You shouldn't try to fool a population. I understand this establishment is located in the Bronx (Pelham Bay area), which might limit the amount of true Sushi eaters that will go eat at this place. However, the quality of the food is precisely what city goers will go after. The popularity of an establishment is precisely placed on the food. For the entree, I ordered Vegetable Teriyaki, an amazing sweet-sourish type sauce that when cooked properly is thick and coats the tofu/veggies very well with its brownish color. When they brought over the dish, it was all watery and the vegetables looked like they were from a frozen package. They taste horrible, like the only thing on the veggies was stock. I had to literally coat the veggies and rice with soy sauce to make it edible. The starting salad again was Iceberg lettuce and the ginger-carrot dressing lacked real ginger flavor. The miso soup hardly had any pieces of tofu in it. This whole experience was a culinary disaster. I didn't make a big fuss about the meal and remained calm and courteous to the restaurant staff.
