We've lived in the area for 6 months. So far this is the best place we have tried. Pleasant view. Good service. Great food. We had fried pickles, catfish, and shrimp and grits. All were excellent. Absolutely horrible experience. Steak was not prepared properly or with seasoning. Owner who cooked food was insulted and had a verbal confrontation with our party in the dining room in front of everyone. After not eating the steak he agreed to only give half off of the entrée. Breathtaking views of the river. We hiked all afternoon and stopped here for supper. We ate on the porch over looking the water. Beautiful way to end our fantastic day! We started our meal with seared scallops that just melted in our mouths. The pecan crusted trout was so fresh and light after an afternoon of hiking. First of all, there are a lot of negative reviews about getting here but if you love the area and what it's all about you will actually enjoy the drive. Aska Rd. is an absolutely beautiful, peaceful stretch of road with beautiful homes and sporadic glimpses of the Toccoa River. Once you get to the restaurant, it's like a big cabin with high ceilings and you can sit inside or outside. It was a rainy, overcast day so we sat outside on the porch. The food was full of flavor. I bought a souvenir mug from the gift shop. I cannot wait to come back. read more

Last night was the 2nd time in a week we have dined on the deck overlooking the River. Saturday night and last night were excellent experiences. Location, service, and trout were excellent. Wine could be improved. Saturday nite we both had crab stuffed trout and it was excellent. Our attentive server had worked in the restaurant 4 years. Last night my Wife ordered pecan encrusted trout, and I told our server to surprise me with my choice; she brought a great Cajun trout. The Cajun trout was lighter in spices that I spice, but well within acceptable limits for late evening dining. Server last evening had worked there for a month - we will ask for her as our server next week when go back. Very attentive. Negative; too little parking, no local wines served. read more

Horrible value to quality to portion ratio I have ever encountered in a non-chain restaurant. Went for dinner on a Thursday evening with another family while vacationing in the area. We went because it's the only table service restaurant in the area that we have found and there are lots of cars parked out front. On arrival for our group of 10, the hostess seemed annoyed we "didn't call in first". The table was ready within 5 minutes but she couldn't be bothered to walk us to the table. Instead she just pointed to the corner of the dining room. The dining room over looks the river and has a beautiful view. The waitress was very polite and her service was quick and efficient but her knowledge of the menu was lacking. Between the 4 adults, 2 teens and 4 littles we covered the menu fairly well. No one said they had a really good meal but all where "ok". That really sums up the experience, just "ok". The food was mostly bland and the portions were bordering on the small side. For the price I definitely do not recommend. The decor and view are top notch for a river restaurant in the countryside but the food quality needs lots of help. If you can find better at a 30 minute longer drive then take it. read more

A popular river side eatery that is super popular with the locals. We had dinner there and it was pretty fair. Decent enough that we'll be back if we have time. The crab stuffed trout was good. Country fried steak was a little rare, which I'm not used to though. We started with the baked Brie and berries which was good except for the Ritz crackers served with it. The service was good overall. Though when your iced tea glasses are so small, you could stand to swing by a tad quicker with a refill. One thing, though. The wife's meal came with bread, but mine did not? Odd. read more

I've dined here for 12+ years, both at the former restaurant and the re-established one. Tonight's dinner with 6 good friends was a mix of very good service by Jimmy, our server, and a mediocre-to-OK preparation of entrees. Four of us ordered the evening special, shrimp and lobster in sherry sauce over linguini, another ordered grilled salmon, another ordered broiled trout, and another friend ordered pecan crusted chicken breast. We had an extraordinarily long wait from finishing our salads to delivery of the main courses. Two of us who ordered the shrimp-lobster linguini special received sub-par entrees: one had 2 shrimp and nothing else; the other had only 1 shrimp! I had a 'normal' serving of 5 shrimp and a small mound of lobster meat in my pasta. That was fine. Oh, it lacked salt of any kind which was surprising considering the seafood used in the entrée. The salmon and trout entrees where fine. My friends enjoyed those. The chicken breast arrived cold and that friend sent it back. About 25 minutes later, he received a full entrée (chicken + 2 sides). He'd only asked for a warm chicken breast, and ate the 2 sides in the meantime. Good that he received another full meal since his spouse received over-cooked crab-stuffed shrimp--only, in lieu of sending back his one-piece shrimp entrée. He took the 2 extra sides to eat with his stuffed shrimp. Glad that worked out. My other friend with the mediocre pasta dish didn't want anything else as it was getting late, and the wait at that point was extraordinarily long. Unfortunately, this was his first--and last--visit to the restaurant. The manager on duty wasn't particularly helpful as she only comped one of the 2 mediocre pasta dishes but not the other, and after stating she was comping only one, walked away. Our server Jimmy, when bringing bills back to us at the end of the evening, said the manager (to her credit), took 25% off of all 3 bills (we split the tab). That was sufficient for us in lieu of not comping one of the two other mediocre pasta dishes. Jimmy profusely apologized for the way our evening went and said he tried to make it better, and he did his best. It wasn't his fault. I felt bad for him though I don't think I'll be back again for a long time to come. I will state that I've been here several times over the past 12 years and have had good meals in that time, including August 2015 when I dined here last. I'd had a terrific ribeye steak meal. I have to wonder looking back at my dining history...it seems meals with 2-4 guests in my party were OK, vs larger groups (like tonight's party of 7) that have had less success in being good dining evenings. Y'all missed the mark tonight. Blue Ridge has other restaurants I'd rather patronize. Do better and be better. read more

Had a very bad experience at dinner tonight at this restaurant. Ordered the Cajun spices trout. Specifically asked waitress if it was broiled or fried, she said broiled. All of my friends got their meal but mine did not come out. The waitress came over and apologized and said they missed my meal on the ticket. After 10 min my food finally came and it was burnt (not blackened which I didn't order). I sent it back and the owner, Tim Richter, came out and said that is how it is served. I told him that was not what I ordered. He said I can either have it back or he would pack it up for me because I would have to pay for it. He was extremely rude and charged me for it including tip. The other people at my table had good food and the service was good, however, I would definitely not go back. read more

My party of 4 arrived around 7:00 on the Sunday before Memorial Day. We were told a 30 minute wait but we were seated in less than 20. We ordered an appetizer of Fried green tomatoes 3 teas and a water the drinks arrived quickly, but I wish I could say the same for the food. The server took our order of one appetizer with a side salad, one dinner salad, one trout sandwich, and 1 pecan crusted trout. About 10 minutes after placing our order, a party of 6 or 8 people were seated just across from us.. About 5 minutes later a party of 8 to 10 were seated a few tables away but in view of our party. After waiting about 20. minutes for our appetizer I finally had to catch the server to ask if she had put in for the appetizer and was told yes and that it would be right out. After about another 10 minutes it finally showed up. After finishing the appetizer we sat for at least another 30 minutes and we were starting to wonder when our food was going to arrive. We then watched as the two large parties that were seated well after we arrived were served their entrees, similar to what we had ordered. I began looking for our server and saw her standing at the table of the party of 6 to 8 serving them, and couldn't get her to even look my way. Finally the manager asked me if something was wrong and I asked her about our food. She appologized and said we are very busy and said they were doing the best they could. I asked why then were two tables that arrived well after us, were being served and we we were still waiting. She said she didn't know and that she was sorry. The manager left and after another 5 minutes she walked by and I asked her about the food and she said it would be right out. I told her the wait was unacceptable and she said she was sorry, and that it was Memorial Day Weekend and again said she was sorry. I asked if that was the reason why did other, larger parties, receive their food well ahead of us even though we were there earlier, again I was told she didn't know and she just walked away. The food arrived about 10 minutes later, Luke warm at best, missing part of the order. The trout was okay but under seasoned, the other entrees were mediocre. Never once did our server offer up a single reason, excuse or apology about our experience. The manager acted like I was being unreasonable for questioning the long wait,and she acted put out by the fact that I had the nerve to ask. I would have expected much more after spending $72 on food that was just fair at best. I'll never go back to this place. I rarely ever complain at a restaurant, and i have never written a restaurant review but the experience at this place was so bad I had to warn people to stay away from this place. It is definitely over priced, and the only thing that keeps it going is the location next to the Taccoa River. The staff is nice if you don't complain but if you do then they start ignoring you and act as if they couldn't care less. read more

Having spent lots of time trout fishing in the Aska Rd area, we were familiar with this restaurant, but had never eaten there. So, we decided to venture out on the last night of our long weekend and give it a try. Awesome location, and the ambiance is really nice....BUT, they still don't serve alcohol on Sundays, which was a bit of a bummer. The menu is nothing spectacular....lots of variations on fresh trout, which is nice, but we'd been eating trout that WE caught all weekend, so we were in the mood for something else. If you don't want a trout dish, the rest of the menu is pretty pedestrian. They had a "special" described as Southwestern Ribeye, so 2 of us tried that. Both steaks were WAY overcooked, smothered in sauteed onions and mushrooms with little to no seasoning....very bland. Our waiter, who was very nice, steered us away from ordering the mashed potatoes, warning us that they were bland. He was right....plain, bland, no seasoning....just a pile of white mush, really. When I pointed out that the steaks were med well to well done, their solution was to offer us a free dessert...a tiny scoop of blackberry cobbler which was also bland, mushy and inedible. The other "special" was grilled mahi mahi, and it too was WAY overcooked...grey, rubbery and flavorless. This would be a nice place to go for cocktails overlooking the river, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has any real food knowledge. I'm a semi-pro Chef, so I admit I'm a "foodie", but as such, I know what's good and what isn't and I just couldn't say this was a place I'd recommend or eat at again. read more

Beautiful place, amazing food, but the staff was some of the rudest people I have ever met in my life just nasty to the core, then after meeting a few locals find out this owner and his staff are known for being rude and when customers get upset they call the law on them. This was the worst experience of our Blue Ridge trip. The ONLY reason they get the one star is because I have to leave something to make a post and we did get a seated pretty quickly... and then we were forgotten. If you have a dog, DONT go on a cold day. There are no space heaters on the pet porch or anything to shield the wind (apparently they didn't realize it would be so cold... in November). We were told there was no propane for the third space heater they had... apparently running to the store to get some is too much? Only service dogs are allowed on the enclosed, heated porch. After waiting 15 mins, I asked the hostess why no one had come out... she apologized and a waitress showed up. Took our drink orders and appetizers... NEVER CAME BACK. After another 15 minutes we decided to just leave. She realized she forgot us when she walked by the window and saw us standing... still didn't come out, I walked in to talk to her about the situation. She apologized and took responsibility for forgetting us. There is no manager, and the owner isn't there... so basically no one in charge. I can't comment on the food, because we never got it. Very disappointed in the outcome. If you are going to portray yourself as a pet friendly establishment, then please do your best to accommodate those guest... and it gets cold in November. read more

I've been eating here for years, and they rarely disappoint. Today, though, they have royally upset me. I took my husband for his birthday because they offer a free meal for customers on their birthdays. This is the third time in the past two weeks we have been there for someone's birthday, and every other time they've been wonderful. This time, my own food was fine, even though the remoulade had been left off my trout sandwich. My husband ordered the Asiago chicken from the birthday menu, with the spinach and mushrooms as one side, and hush puppies as the other. The hush puppies lacked onions, the spinach and mushrooms (which he had ordered just a week before) were overwhelmed with garlic, and the chicken, which also had the spinach and mushrooms on top of it, over cooked, tough and dry, and the spinach on it was black. When our wonderful waitress came to ask how everything was, he eventually admitted that the chicken was over cooked, and she offered to take it back and have it recooked. That seemed reasonable, so we sent her off with it. A few minutes later, a manager came back. She said that the "chef" insisted that the chicken was moist and juicy on the inside, and that she could only charge us for a different meal. My husband was incredulous, and pointed out that the chicken was tough, and the spinach was actually black. She insisted that there was nothing wrong with it according to the chef, and it would not be replaced. He requested to have it returned, so she did. When it was brought back, I looked at it myself, and it was obviously quite dry, and the spinach was, in fact, quite black. As we were leaving, one of the kitchen staff was walking from the kitchen door (where we had parked) to the dumpster, and overheard my husband (who actually is a chef) complaining that the current cook was an idiot. As I sat down in the car, I saw the kitchen worker sort of smile, and heard him say, "yep". Clearly, this particular cook needs to be working someplace with a lower standard of food. read more

The manager or owner was yelling across the lobby at an employee as I was leaving. It was extremely unprofessional of him to do so and cancelled out every good thing about the place. Worst dining experience ever. Sent back four meals twice because they were cold. Owner insulted my intelligence by stating he would test the food to see if it was cold. Decided we had had enough and went to leave. I offered to pay the bill if they would compensate the four meals that were never eaten. The meals didn't even make it back to the table. Owner's compensation offer was despicable. I ended up having to pay for meals that were not eaten. Will never go back and advise anyone visiting Blue Ridge to stay away from this place. Food was not very good. The wait staff and management work hard to please. But the food coming out of the kitchen is a bit of a disappointment. My wife had the shrimp, it had a bleachy chlorine taste to it. I had the pork loin, that was cut really paper thin, and came out as dry as card board. A lot of people are excited about the location. Wow, and not in a good way, we ordered prime rib, cheese burger with sweet potato fries and apple wood smoked trout with angle hair pasta in a cream sauce. The cook should have been shot because he BOILED the prime rib! The cheese burger came without the cheese and DRY! The smoked trout was in little bitty pieces and mixed really well with the pasta which was not seasoned! All I can say good is the view was beautiful! We paid and left! No offer to fix it! read more

Called for preferred time seating for eight. Waited over an hour after the "preferred time"assed then found they had given our table to someone else. Waited another half-hour against my better judgement. Finally we're seated in a crowded area where the Waite staff had to slide by us. Awful, but just the beginning of a worse meal. After another long wait they started to serve what turned out to be cold, blah food most plates missing the sides like fries or vegetables, served cold half way through this disastrous meal. Drink orders simply forgotten, something as simple as tarter sauce delivered way too late and it got worse. It took 3 & 1/2 hours and we all left hungry. Nice setting but they have a long long way to go to provide the service you expect from a nice restaurant. The food was marginal at best unless you actually prefer cold and dry. This is a tough review to write because EVERYONE was very nice. The restaurant has only been re-opened for three weeks after being rebuilt after total destruction during fire. Normally I would have not written a bad review, except after talking with the manager I was told this was her 9th restaurant start-up and the owner (who was not there) has been in the restaurant business for 20 years. So, here goes. Service: Nice but amateurish and given the prices of the food, Chick-fil-A blows them away. Food: Expensive, small portions and mediocre. Details below. I ordered the mixed grill. $19.95. You get three item choices so I picked BBQ ribs, grilled shrimp and grilled scallops. Side dish was their "famous" homemade mashed potatoes. Salad was included and I requested dressing on the side. Salad: Good, except the dressing was NOT on the side. However it wasn't soaked in the blue cheese dressing so I let it slide. The salad was fresh, the dressing high quality. It included a strange little round cheesy looking piece of bread, which you could have used interchangeably for a hockey puck or shooting at sporting clays. Ribs: Horrible.They were small, tough, overcooked or reheated badly. The "tangy" BBQ sauce was indeed tangy. Tangy and horrid. Shrimp: Decent but unremarkable. Small portion of four medium shrimp. Scallops: Good, nice size and only two. World famous mashed potatoes: CRAP I have had better mashed potatoes out of an MRE pack on the DZ at Ft. Bragg. For you civilians, that means you go to mediocre and then drop two levels down. Management: Charming, hands-on, sweet BUT.... Molly came over and asked how everything was. I quietly told her in detail everything I wrote above, adding comments about my wife's meal, which was not quite as bad as mine but WAY overpriced for the delivered meal. Molly was sweet, apologetic but made zero offer to either comp a dessert or make any other concession. I didn't asked her to do so. I wanted to see what her response would be. She even went back and tasted the potatoes and came back and said they were indeed poor. This meal with tip was $60.00 I regret I didn't send both meals back and leave to eat at Harvest on Main in Blue Ridge. read more

The Riverside has been my "go to" place when in the area, but no more after Saturday night's experience. My wife and I arrived at 6:00 pm on a Saturday night and were told the wait for tables was 1 1/2 hours. This was expected, so we rolled into the bar. We found the bar full but got lucky when a large party was called to their table. We soon realized the lone bartender couldn't keep up with serving drinks to the restaurant, & food/drinks to ~20 in the bar. We made it easy and ordered a bottle of wine and dinner at the bar. We had no issues with dinner, the trout was good, but not great. The problems came after dinner. We saw a party of 4 - 5 get ejected from the bar & restaurant for complaining to a waitress and apparently for calling her stupid. A few minutes later a couple of ladies seated next to me at the bar complained to the bartender about an overcharge. The bartender said she couldn't help but referred the issue to another employee who tried unsuccessfully to appease the unhappy ladies. I overheard the employee tell the ladies that they could leave if they didn't like it. The argument escalated until the restaurant employee threw a wine glass onto the bar showering a hundred shards of glass onto several patrons and their food. One patron received a cut to their hand and was bleeding. We expected the manager to come to the bar, dismiss the employee for assaulting the customers, and then offer to comp the bills. Nope, nothing of the sort. The customers had to go find him to complain about the service. He handled the situation very poorly by defending the employees and never coming to the bar and checking with the patrons. I have never witnessed such terrible behavior and service in a restaurant before. In my opinion, the restaurant is getting off lightly if this doesn't turn legal. read more

Our family had dinner there Saturday evening June 28, 2014. We were 6 adults and 3 children. First let me say that we've been coming here for 10+ years when we visit Blue Ridge. For you restaurant critics, this is not a 5 Star culinary experience. What it is is a fun restaurant in a beautiful setting with very good food. We've never had a hint of a rude attitude from the hostess or waiter staff. They have done a wonderful job with the new landscaping in the back. We all enjoyed hanging out by the river and taking pictures both before and after our meal. The food was good. My wife and I always order their specialty - fresh farm raised trout. The Cajun and the pecan crusted trout are excellent. Each of the 2 trout filet sides is large enough to be a meal. One of our favorite sides is the fried corn nuggets. They are awesome. In short this is my go-to restaurant when visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains. read more
