We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation, but were told our table was already ready, so we were seated. (The restaurant tables are very close together, so be aware that if anyone in your party is wheelchair bound, it may be difficult for them to maneuver around.) The restaurant is kept very warm inside, and I'm usually someone who feels cold easily, but even I was rather hot. A woman brought water glasses and a water carafe to our table and said, "If you want something besides water, just let me know," and then walked off. So, in my mind, that woman was a food assistant or a food runner. Turned out, she was our waitress! She later stopped by, didn't introduce herself and didn't ask if we'd ever been there before, but did ask if we wanted an appetizer. We ordered Potato Pancakes. She also asked if we wanted bread service, so we said yes. We did notice from other conversations at the very close tables near ours, that many of the customers are regulars and have their favorite waitstaff. The manager had stopped by a table to regrettably inform a couple that their favorite waiter was out for 2 weeks. So, that did give us hope that if they have regulars, it must be good. The Potato Pancakes were delicious! (I didn't even stop to snap a picture because we were very hungry!) My husband ordered the "Bier" + Cheese Burger ($16.95), and I ordered the Pork Shank "Schwweinehaxe" ($34). The waitress said she had to check the availability of the Pork Shank, so I told her that if it wasn't available, to put in Chicken Wienerschnitzel. Then she didn't come back to let us know what the kitchen said. My husband flagged her down to find out if the pork shank was available, and she said she'd forgotten to come back, but that it was. He also told her that it was my birthday, so she brought out a cute birthday tea light for the table. The food was absolutely delicious, and for the price point, you can easily see why people are regulars there! The pork shank was enormous! (We ate off of it 2 more times after we took it home. The restaurant gave us extra gravy at no charge, too.) The rosemary mashed potatoes were very good! The presentation was lovely! My husband really enjoyed his burger. Then for dessert, our waitress brought out a slice of tiramisu with a wedge of chocolate cake over it, berries, whipped cream, and a little birthday candle in it. Turned out really wonderful! Will definitely go back to this unique spot!

Being greeted with a glass of prosecco or flavored water is such a thoughtful and classy touch. It immediately set the tone for what turned out to be a stylish and memorable dining experience. The servers are incredibly sweet and attentive, and the service overall was nothing short of phenomenal. The ambiance? Elegant, modern, and cozy--perfect for a date night or a special dinner with friends. Now to the food: portions lean on the smaller side, so keep that in mind if you're coming hungry-- The scallop dish (yes, singular!) was beautifully plated and divided into four delicate bites. ( I was a little taken aback that it was just one scallop) The lamb shank was hearty and tender--a solid main course with generous portioning. Brussels sprouts made for a tasty shared appetizer with a nice crisp and bold flavor. The steak frites had a good portion size and could work as either a hearty starter or a lighter entrée. Special mention to the bread service--a simple but elevated addition that rounds out the meal nicely. Overall, Folga blends upscale dining with warm hospitality in a way that feels both luxurious and approachable. Perfect for a night out when you're looking to treat yourself. Oh and it's Halal!

My curiosity got piqued when I was walking by and saw gulasch on the menu board. I mean, gulasch in a food court? I'm so there. But what really won me over was the picture of the bread dumplings next to the gulasch. When I was in Prague last year, I ate bread dumplings 3-4 times a day. The entire week! Bread, in an form, is my absolute weakness. So I ordered a couple of things -- the gulasch and the frikadellen. I should have known it wasn't gonna be authentic after I found out that the Korean grandmother hostess was none other than the cook. She is the nicest, sweetest grandmother, though, and fed me like a starving granddaughther who hasn't eaten in days. The gulasch, as expected, tasted more Korean than Czechoslovakian. It was really Korean stew, if anything else. It did taste bold and flavorful, and the meat pieces were very tender. Unfortunately, the bread dumplings are only for photography purposes as I learned they'll never have it available. The frikadellen (German meat patties) were as delicious as the German version -- meaty with spinach, carrots, and a bit of cilantro in the filling. All meals come with a side of salad (and soup if requested; she gave me both). This is a good place to eat homecooked European meals with a touch of Korean. Meals start at $5.95 and portions are huge. Other menu items include pasta bolognese, schnitzel, Asian noodles, fried rice, fish, chicken tenders. Where else can you order gulasch with fried rice?

Received my food in a decent amount of time but was never checked on again afterwards. The steak was okay but did not seem like 8oz. I received a potato large enough for a family of four, it's too bad I only got enough butter for one. Would have liked to have more but no one ever even glanced my way to see if I needed anything. I felt like because I was eating alone, they couldn't be bothered. I think dessert was included with my meal, but again, no one came by for me to ask. This was a very less than stellar experience for me and more than likely I will not be back. The only thing I can say is that I was hungry and now I'm not. Would have eaten more of my potato if I'd had more butter. Very unimpressed.

The owner even came by to chat with us and was extremely welcoming. He came by again towards the end of our meal to basically let us know, "the restaurant closes at 10 but that's just for new diners. Eleven months ago, Charles Hellier described in explicit detail the "high-end fine dining"…read moreexperience his wife, Leigh, and he were planning at 239 Broad St. He described an aggressive menu with classic steak cuts, lobster tails, stuffed salmon, Sicilian chicken and other specialties. The table clothes? White. The wait staff: Classically dressed and trained. The Helliers missed the original opening deadline by a few months but what they've presenting is well worth the wait. We tried The Chophouse on Broad Street for a rare Sunday showcase -- Mother's Day. We wished we'd gone sooner. What we found: Biggest surprise: Mothers were treated to complimentary champagne which we assumed meant one pour. The wait staff monitored both bubbly and water, and quickly offered to refill both. Time and time again. No extra charge. Lovin' the oven: Just as plentiful were the fresh-baked rolls. Served four at a time, refills were offered as the staff spotted just one survivor from each round. Other fine dining spots here have even offered bread. The service: A step above even the best of Rome (Aventine). Although new, each of the five people who stopped by our table seemed to have only us in mind despite a full, midday crowd. The young lady pouring the champagne was nervous -- it was her first pour -- but aced it with a second attempt as the bubbles settled. The ambiance: Classic Broad Street brick walls, gleaming floor, carefully arranged tables with enough privacy, plenty of branding on glasses and such. Even the salt was maldon in appropriate dispensers. No wrappers in sight. Menu: On this day, a bit compact vs. what we've seen online but more than enough. The prime rib (two of our three orders) could have broken the plates; each was cooked to order (both medium). Easily the best we've had in years. The Sicilian chicken breasts (two) were just as tender and large enough to save one for dinner this week. The sides: Brussels with maple and bacon; mashed potatoes -- outstanding and served family style. Both easily fed three adults with some take-home, too. The damage: Just under $150 with tax before tip. That seemed to be the going rate of the Mother's Day buffets around town but this was table service vs. "pass the fried chicken, please." (And downtown was packed for each). Exceeding expectations: We knew the Helliers had high hopes and they risked even more by opening in a downtown spot that have served us the world's best lasagna (T' Martooni's, gone since late 2006) and every fabulous dish from Chef Joan Brady at Crawdaddy's. The Helliers surpassed those goals, even on one of the busiest restaurant days of the year. Also: Leigh and Charles went table-to-table on Sunday to welcome guests. Overall, a very rare well done from this newsletter. The Chophouse is a destination restaurant for downtown Rome and one we hope to visit on more than just "special occasions."
